Please do your research and do not do business with SMS. They require full payment upfront (red flag) and then give you an estimated delivery date that is totally bogus. I waited a year for seat covers and the quality was so bad that an upholstery shop would not install them. I found another upholstery shop that would install them and they look HORRIBLE. This shop also said they were the worst seat covers they had ever seen. I'm still waiting on door panels after a year and a half. I'm terrified what they are going to look like. They don't ship even close to when they say they will. My upholsterer told me to order the fabric as he can't get orders shipped in a timely manner (months). So I ordered 1 yard that is in stock. I was told it would ship in two weeks, even though they charged my card that day. No shipment. So I called at the three week mark, I was told it was shipping that week. Now another few weeks have gone by and I am going to have to call again and possibly report to my card company. I am restoring a 1970 Mustang Mach 1 and wanted to use the OE Comfortweave fabric in the seats. I ordered at the end of March 2023 and was told the material should arrive in three (3 ) weeks. I called at the end of every month for SIX MONTHS inquiring as to an updated delivery date. Every month I got another excuse (lie?) until the fabric was delivered after six months to the day. In 1995 they did a wonderful job of supplying fabric for my 1964 Riviera but in recent years they have proved to be complete buffoons and thieves to put it bluntly. I am puzzled by the negative reviews, which contrast with my experience. My restorer told me we needed to order 3 months in advance because the leather would have to be produced. I ordered the metallic leather and matching vinyl and paid for it. I believe it was a few weeks late, but so is everything else I have ordered for the car. Paint, upholstery service, chrome, stainless, mechanical parts, trim, etc all have been more than double estimated wait times. We had plenty of time and the material arrived in great condition, exactly as stock. I felt the folks i dealt with were polite and helpful. Maybe it helps that my restorer has a relationship with the company, but I felt the product was high quality and the service was good, albeit late like everything else. read more

I have read many of these negative reviews. My firsthand experience was very different. I may be an outlier, but I think customers didn't understand all that is required to fulfill orders for vintage auto interiors. I'll provide you as accurate a review of this company's craftsmanship and level of customer service. The delivery arrived this week. I unpacked it and have provided photos for your review. In early-Sept., 2019 I ordered a bench seat upholstery for my shortbed '65 Chevy Custom Cab pickup. I knew about the inconsistency in turn-around time & ultimate delivery, but this company was the only source that had the factory-correct fabric AND design. Car enthusiasts here in Arizona also recommended them, warned me to allow plenty of time, but that I wouldn't be disappointed. All I can say is, "Holy COW!!" While it did take 5 months from ordering to delivery, I must compliment Kim for always, always responding to my 2 or 3 update email requests. I was always civil, and she was always prompt with same-day replies. Today, after unpacking the pre-stitched material, I was so impressed at how spot-on the finished product appeared! Yes, the wait may be longer than you would desire and, yes, they do take 100% payment upfront. But it's a business and they need to acquire the materials. Based on the complaints, they obviously do not employ enough upholsterers, but the work through the orders as best as possible without compromising craftsmanship. That's my take, at least. Ultimately, I simply cannot say enough positive things about their quality (thick, dense, and exact) and their willingness to respond when you act polite, respectful and patient. I highly recommend using this company, and only suggest that you PLAN AHEAD if your full restoration timeline is under 1 year. Unfortunately I ordered from them, $2,100+ of fabric; had to deal with "Kim" who must be a daughter, a wife, a sister, or a lover of one of the Pollacks or she'd have been fired long ago..uncommunicative, she told me she does not bother to read emails every day; she never answers her phone and when she does respond, it is monosyllabic, uninterested in the customer and untruthful in content...what a lousy outfit. To be honest, I was a bit leery of purchasing from SMS. Some of the Yelp reviews were less than flattering, but I proceeded anyway, with the mindset of "you can't please everyone". Also, this is one of the only places that sells reproduction auto fabrics, so... I was quite pleased with the service I received. The fabric I requested was in stock, so the order arrived at my door in a week's time. Yes, it was expensive, $100 per yard, but the quality of the product is top notch. I called allowing myself several months of lead time, in case it had to be specially made/ordered. That was one complaint noticed on others' reviews. But being it was in stock, it was processed quickly. This may not be the case with others' experiences, so it's something to consider when ordering. If I ever have the need for reproduction materials, yes, I will order from SMS again. read more

The latest in the absurdly lengthy list of issues my employer and I have had with SMS over the past few years is an order placed on June 26th of last year. We ordered 5 yard of cotton headlining material for a 1936 Chevy after receiving a sample and paperwork (see attached photo of sample sheet we were sent) very clearly stating that they had the exact material we were looking for, so we got back in touch and placed the order and submitted payment in full. After 6 months of no material and no word from them on order status we reached out to check on the 7th of January 2024 and were told that the order would be tracked down and handled promptly. After another month of no word, reached out again on the 7th of February 2024, and received a response that it just so happened our order would be completed by the next morning and then another email stating that they were wrapping and readying it to ship. But since then there has been no additional communication to give us any indication it was actually shipped or any package tracking info for us. We've been in the restoration upholstery industry for quite a while and fully understand the complexities of dealing in NOS fabrics and Reproduction fabrics but our understanding starts to wear thin when underhanded business practices and out right lies have become the norm from a supplier. If the materials needed to be produced from scratch or if there were unforeseen flaws or issues with the materials we selected and we were notified promptly that the time the order would take would need to be extended or that there was an issue with the stock we would understand completely. But to take money for an order and then not fulfill said order or notify us of any issues is plainly unacceptable. At this point calling SMS a "business" is quite a stretch, words like "scam" or "scheme" are much more appropriate. I know there aren't any people in the industry that I've ever met that have anything good to say about them but for a lot of rare Automotive fabrics they're the only source, but be warned you'll be in for a lengthy ordeal to receive your order and don't be surprised if the materials are stained and flawed when you receive them, we always order extra material if we have to order from SMS because we know a percentage of it is almost always unusable for the quality we strive to provide our customer. read more

Do not use this company. I am in a year long horror show in trying to get 3 yards of black and white plaid material. Two months after paying I ask where it is. Doug calls me up and asks if he can send me the material in leftover pieces, not in full yards. I say that doesn't work for me. He convinces me that I should wait 6 weeks for him to weave new stock. 10 weeks later they say it's in the mail. A total of 9 months go by before I file with the BBB, and Doug says it will be ready by July. I got the material on the last day of July and it is the scraps I rejected 9 months earlier. And what's worse is that it was covered in paint and brown stains (See Photos). None of it could be used. I return it, and ask for the $397.75 back. Ordered a top for a 70 Lincoln mark lll Calvary twill on 6/23/20 for $644.00 they told me 4-6 weeks. After 4 months I tried calling and no answer, left messages and no response. Finally after punching in random extensions I got a human on the phone and she told me another 6 weeks. I got my top 6 months from the day it was ordered. The first thing I noticed is it was not as thick or deep as the original grain and the seams were already coming apart after two weeks, absolute garbage top. Ripped it off and found an nos one for $700.00 what a difference. I own an auto upholstery business in California and tried to get an original material (after paying for it of course) for over a year and a half. After calling them several times I was told the vinyl was in production and I should see it in less than a week. Over 6 months later and I still didn't have the material. If your lucky enough to have someone answer the phone they Lie and they don't return calls or emails. I'm guessing they think that because they're the only producer of OEM vinyls they have you by the balls. Guess again- I'll tell you right now I'll find something comparable and I will NEVER try using SMS again. If I could rate them Zero Stars, I would. Last September, I contacted them about making some door panels for my AMC Gremlin. An acquaintance of mine had some made also and his took about 6 months to receive. I figured, mine were black - not red - shouldn't take too long. I ordered, paid and was told "Early Next Year". (That implied Early 2018) I also sent them my old panels as a pattern. Well, I've emailed several times since then and have been told multiple reasons as to why they're not done. Lies lies lies that is all I have got from SMS. This is the WORST company in the automotive industry. The owner Doug is a fraudster. 6 November 2019 I was told it will take a few months to get my order together. 14 November 2019 Doug says that the seat embossing's can be shipped first. 22 November 2019 I was told 6 to 8 weeks to get the embossing's done probably ready end of the year 2019. Now 44 emails later and many many lies later I have still not received the seat pressings or most of my order, I did receive the door trims and they where good quality but what can I do with just door trim panels? I have got so frustrated with the many lies I have been told by SMS that I sold the car unfinished and have requested a refund. I have now requested a refund 4 times but I have not received a cent back. This company and its shady practices of charging people money and then not deliver as promised needs to be shared with everyone in the industry. If Doug and the employees at SMS could actually learn to tell the truth that your order will take years to complete then those with patience and time on their hands can keep on using SMS services and us inpatient ones that don't like to wait over 2 years for a 6 to 8 week order can go somewhere else. Extremely frustrated and disappointed in the way I was treated by SMS. There is no need to tell lies and say you are going to ship a product when you know very well you are not shipping and then refuse to give a refund to a inpatient customer. I ordered fabric in June 2021 for my 1958 Studebaker Pickup. After dozens of call, a fax and e-mails I was at the end of my rope!! They would respond to about one third of my requests for updates saying something like, " our order is due to be shipped next week." Just horrible customer service!!!!!!!!! I read a blog that the only way a customer got his money back was to threaten them with a complaint to the Department of Consumer and Business Services Division of Financial Regulation in Oregon. I let SMS Fabrics know that I was going to file and miraculously they contacted me and told me that they would refund my order after trying to do so for weeks. I have since then ordered samples from Kovi.com and ordered and received five yards of quality heavy duty upholstery material which was precisely what I was looking for! From my experience as an auto trimmer in Melbourne, Australia, SMS auto fabrics does deliver what you order. I've ordered vinyls and cloth materials several times and have always received what I ordered on behalf of customers. Doug and Kim have been also very prompt in replying to my emails, so I really appreciate their time and effort. Doug sometimes even replied outside of their business hours...The most recent order I made was Sep I think, and although it took a while for the vinyls to be made, it did get shipped in early Nov using UPS expedited to AU. Kim was also very fast in getting the tracking # to me. My experience says that not only do you need to be patient, but you also need to plan your interior well in advance. Absolutely awful company to deal with especially if you are a business utilizing their fabrics as their lies and poor work ethic will reflect poorly on you to your own customers. After being promised a 90 day lead time on custom fabric (I called every three weeks to be sure that everything was on schedule and was told every time that the timeline would be met) I was finally told 10 days before planning to pick up the fabric that they had not even started yet. Fast forward to 10 months of regular phone call attempts (I never once received a promised call back and one time spent over 40 minutes on hold) and the fabric finally arrived. It is great fabric...and had they not been lying about the timeline the entire time this would probably be a 5 star review. The fact, however, that I was blatantly lied to about the timing makes the product almost worthless. If they actually cared about the small US owned mills they are using they would turn the accounts over to a company that (1) is able to return a phone call, (2) doesn't say your order is on time 80 days into a 90 day order when they haven't even started yet and (3) doesn't make you wait an additional 7 months for your order. Again, this review is purely against the awful people that run this and not the fabric that they are reselling. If you need an in-stock fabric maybe your experience will only be slightly unpleasant. If however you are looking for an honorable company to work with, look elsewhere. It has now been 23 months since I placed my order. I ordered a complete interior package. Door panels, seat covers etc for a 64 Buick Wildcat. I put the required 1/2 down. I even took my old door panels and seat covers to them for samples. Door panels took 21 months to get done. Seat covers are not done yet. (the easiest part). Their excuse is they don't know the pattern. Really. When I was there they showed me a picture of the interior. Plus I had samples for them to follow.
