I did not read the Yelp reviews prior to my order, so I wasn't aware of how poorly SMS handles customer service. I placed an order for material and for two months, Kim obfuscated, said she was checking with production and then told me delivery would be at the end of the week. That went on for 2 months. Hard to plan a project when there's no straight answer. If SMS had told me up front they had to make the material, and how long that might take, then I would have understood the delay and could have planned around it. But the constant "it'll be delivered next week" with no follow through is just bad business. Worse: I cancelled the order after 2 months, and they gave me no refund. I contested the charges with AMEX, but now, 3 mos later, SMS is delivering the material. My guess is they're trying to start a claim against me if I miss the UPS delivery and the material is left at the address. If you order from SMS, don't plan your project around receiving your order. read more

Only leaving one star, as ZERO is not an option. We have two customers that we are working on their vehicles. One of them paid SMS in full in December 2019, and still no feedback on time this material will be completed as it's coming from the mill. I originally called and asked if they had said fabric in stock I was told they had 3 yards - cool, all we needed is 1&1/2. Assuming we would be getting what's in stock I wait a few days thinking it's going to be sent out. Nope. I call back two weeks later asking for a status update as the emails aren't getting responded to. I get told it takes 2-3weeks from the mill. Ok. Got it. It should be done by now it's been 3 months wheres my shipment? I call yet again, and am told the 2-3 week turn around time was incorrect and that it actually takes 6-8weeks. All I can think is excuse after excuse. At this point yes, I'm VERY frustrated with this company. We have another order placed, being given the run around on shipment dates. I was told last week its going out Friday or Monday...ok Is it friday or monday? So again. I call this morning and basically get another I don't know answer on shipment. Okay I need the supervisor. Supervisor is out of town until Thursday "at the mill". I needed a tracking number for the material we ordered seeing as how they lie back and forth and are very wish washy on dates and information. I got hung up on before I could ask my question. I call back and they sent me to the manger because I'm pissed I got hung up on, she is also is crappy with customer service. Just completely unprofessional. I called from our shop number which went to voicemail, my cell phone also voicemail, had to use my coworkers number to get an answer. Like are we being purposely being screened and ignored? Seems like it! All I can hope is our stuff gets here sooner than later. At this point we will all be dead before we get anything from them. I might be in the minority opinion here, but I had a very positive experience with SMS. They quickly sent me out a fabric sample to see before ordering. Then after placing my order, they sent the actual material out carefully packaged and it arrived within a week and a half! So many neg. reviews and complaints about taking 9 months, or longer, or not answering the phone..I personally didn't have that experience. Maybe they hired additional help by now compared to before? They'd get 5 stars from me but for the fact that this Bedford Cord material is quite expensive @ $149/ yard. But, the fact that they even had anything remotely close for this rare vehicle (1956 DKW) makes it worth every penny. I WILL be using SMS again in the future for additional vintage automotive upholstery purchases. Note that my purchase was for fabric yardage and not for a finished special order item or seat cover sets. That might be a different story altogether, and I can't speak to that. They are very quick to take your money and very slow to ship your order. After almost 5 weeks of waiting for 3 yards of material I emailed them to ask if they had shipped. They said not yet so I asked them to cancel my order. 10 minutes later they suddenly said the order had already shipped and I could not cancel. They were very slow to ship a previous order too. These guys...I shipped my panels and then waited over 18 months for them to complete it. Then I get the door panels and back panels finally and they cut the wrong holes, power accessories instead of manual windows. How can you screw that up when you had the originals in your hands??? They did, so I sent them back again another month. They fixed the mistakes on the front panels and ignored the back ones? Why because they are stupid. Add insult to injury the seems don't line up on the passenger front and back panels. The front to back are off by about an half inch. The material, color, and pattern is really good. If only their workmanship was the same. Near as I can tell the turnover in the place is really high. I will say this to anyone who is reading this and thinking about getting interior work done. USE A LOCAL SHOP TO GET YOUR WORK DONE. You can get close to factory it's really not worth it if they don't do the job right. SMS is not a place you want to make your panels. I would not have minded if the panels were right. Not 80%, 100% correct. It would have been worth the wait but they made multiple mistakes. It should not take 18 months to do the work and have it be wrong in so many ways. If you got work done by them and you got it done perfectly I am honestly happy for you. By far the worst supplier I have ever dealt with in my 18+ years of working in the automotive upholstery field. Unfortunately, they are the ONLY company that offers NOS and OE antique material. I dread having to deal with them and have to go as far as to warn our customers of their horrible customer service. I now advise our customers to contact them directly since they constantly misquote lead times (by a matter of months) for materials that are supposedly in-stock. The last order we placed with them we were told a 6 week lead time...it ended up taking almost 6 months, and was only received after countless follow up calls (that were never returned) and emails. I finally received the complete order after telling them I would dispute the charges, after that we received the complete order in a couple weeks. I wouldn't mind long lead times, given the specialty nature, but they have to communicate that, especially when lead-time is specifically asked when placing the order. When they tell a business 6 weeks to get a material, and it takes 6 months (or in most cases more), with zero communication about the longer time-frame, it creates a scheduling nightmare for not only that one job, but the countless others that are scheduled around it. It also takes weeks to get answers from customer service on orders already placed and paid for in full. They charge astronomical prices for goods that need to be checked throughly upon arrival because in more than a handful of cases they have sent items that are not usable or not the same as what was sent for a proof. As a business who works very hard to maintain a great reputation, SMS continually puts that reputation at risk and is a business I cannot confidently stand behind and endorse. read more

It has been 14 months and just excuses from Kim. Beat them up on Facebook and someone got back to me saying they had trouble finding good help so all the promises weren't lies. They are sleeping with the BBB, I took out a complaint, told them to finish by the end of the month or I need a refund. They responded that they would complete the work by the end of the month. Very frustrated after being on hold for a while and still no answer to my question, where is my material. This is my second time trying to use them. The first time was a rather quick turn around on the material. My one problem was that the material was stained. Didn't complain, made due with what I could. I was in a time crunch. This time, I'm frustrated. After weeks of waiting I still have no word on where my material is or when I will have this material. I've tried calling to be told I must email. To waiting for someone to answer my emails. To yet another phone call to be put on hold for 10 minutes to just be told to wait for a phone call back. I had the typical experience with this company. Placed an order for 1964 Oldsmobile 88 convertible interior door panels. 50% deposit in March of 2018 was told 6 month backlog. Sent old panels in October of 2018 with the balance of $. "Will ship next week" was the standard response stating in March 2019. Finally received incomplete unfinished panels in August. Had to prove I had sent the full panels to them w chrome and badges. (Had photos at UPS store as they boxed them up). Took another week to get my old panels back so I can complete the panels myself. The material was an exact match to the original. That is the ONLY good thing about dealing with this company. read more

I've read reviews everywhere about SMS and was VERY hesitant to do business with them. I'm in South Florida and restoring a 1951 Mercury coupe as original and stock as possible. About 3 years ago I contacted the few auto interior fabric businesses that are open. SMS was the ONLY one with the EXACT material I needed. When I contacted them in January 2017, they told me they still had the material, but the price had gone up from $89 to $99/yard. Being hesitant and skeptical, I shopped around again. I found something close to original from a 90s Cavalier, but not EXACT as original. It was almost the same price as SMS, so I decided to take a chance with SMS. I only wanted to order the part of the seats with the patterned material - not the solid color portions, since I think I can get the plain material anywhere. The lady who answered was cordial, but pretty much strictly business - not much small talk. I think her name is Kelly. I didn't know how many yards I would need so she suggested 8 yards as typical. I added 2 yards for error (10 yards total) which Kelly mentioned some people do to be safe. I provided my credit card info. During my brief conversation, I asked if the material was NOS (66 years old, but new) or if SMS actually manufactured the material. She said they manufactured it NEW, and it would be perfect with no age spots, stains, tears, bugs, old smell or brittleness. About 3 weeks to a month later the new material arrived. I have never dealt with interior fabrics, but I have to admit it's BEAUTIFUL. It is EXACTLY as original. The fabric is thick and seems durable. My perception is that it's high quality. The surface is even "ribbed" - when you run your fingers on it, you can feel the grooves - just like original. I'm very impressed and pleasantly surprised. It made my confidence go up with SMS. I will be ordering the rest of the interior soon, and will keep this review updated. I wanted to share my positive experience. PS. I inquired about door panels. They said they needed my originals as a blue print, and that they were 12-15 months backed up. The problem is that my door panels are completely deteriorated. If I could, I'd rate zero stars. Ordered 8 yards of custom plaid for $980 back in early March for our 1957 Chevy Wagon. Only received 2 yards to date. Only the front seat is complete. Numerous emails sent to no avail. Call the number and you get a voicemail that says they prefer you email them. You're lucky if you get a response to that. The couple of times I did receive a response, the owner Doug said they were making new fabric and it was "tricky." The last response was in June when they said I would receive it after July 4. Wonder which year they were speaking of?? Today, I sent my final request for the remaining fabric. If we don't receive it, we'll have to pay our interior guy to remove it and start all over....AND we will move forward with legal action. Obviously, we do not recommend this company. read more

It as with much trepidation that I ordered a set of door panels from SMS after reading some of the reviews , but truth being said , they are the ONLY company around that does this. So I sent them my originals to be matched. This was in February , and the agreed delivery date was mid April. I got a call from them in early April , saying that they ere doing their best to meet the date, but they were running a little behind schedule. I agreed , and mid May , as they promised, my panels arrived, and they are BEAUTIFUL !!! I paid half down with a personal check , and the balance on completion with a credit card. Overall , I am very happy with their work. Order your panels early and they ll be done in time. things always seem to take a little longer than you think they re going to take . I wish I had read these reviews before dealing with SMS, I paid in advance in August to have my original upholstery matched, they said it would take 2 months to custom make it, I tried to contact them two and a half months later and only got a phone message saying to email them, I sent several emails and got no replies. I called again and managed to get through to the order desk as that is the only line they take calls on. She transferred me to another cranky lady who said my order would wouldn't be ready until the end of the year. I asked for a refund and all of a sudden my order was ready and being shipped out the next day. I received the roll of vinyl and it is similar but not a match at all, they obviously just pulled some off a roll because it is the same as a sample that they had sent me before.
