The best giant mugs of coffee on this planet
    Martyn M.

S'mug has been on my list of places to try in Glasgow for coffee for a while, and yesterday when I was out for a day in the city with my mum, I popped in to give it a go! It was freezing cold in town yesterday for some reason, and after our lunch at The Two Figs, we were feeling a nice warm cup of coffee (tea for mum!), and sitting in the corner in here with their giant mugs of coffee was the perfect feeling! The staff who were working were lovely and brought over our tea, gingerbread latte and the daily soup, which yesterday was chicken noodle (yum), within a few minutes of ordering. And what wonderful coffee it was! My mum enjoyed her tea, I enjoyed my soup and everyone was happy. I tried a wee smoothie as I was leaving, and they're a bit too syrupy for my liking but it was still lovely. Great place!

S'mug is a great place for a quiet coffee, compared to some of the chain coffee houses surrounding the Byres Road area. Different in the way that it's extremely cosy, and the coffee is decent - especially if you're a student, (did someone say discount!?). Their cafe lattes are nice and creamy, and they don't use that nasty coffee like some other cafes in the area do. It actually tastes like coffee coffee. They've also got a wide selection of food stuffs which I haven't partaken in as yet, but I have had a slice of caramel shortcake, which, by the by, was delicious. My only problem with the place? The size - as great as it is that they have an outdoor area that seats 20 (or so) people, inside is slightly cramped - even though I was at a table for two with my friend, I felt like the people next to us were part of the conversation. Slightly annoying, but obviously can't be helped.

I love S'mug. It's close to the University, so perfect for students (and they have a student discount). The last time I went they were all out of their vegetarian option (bagel with hummus and roasted veggies), but since they still had some ingredients in the back, they whipped one up for me. It was very much appreciated, but also made very clear that this is not something they do regularly. They don't really have many veggie options, hence the 4 stars. Bagel sandwiches come with tortilla chips and coleslaw. Kind of an odd mixture, and the coleslaw has a bit too much mayo for me, but overall the meal is a great deal at less than £5. The chai tea lattes are amazing! Much better than what you'll get just around the corner at Starbucks. I've also had a London Fog there that was perfect. The atmosphere is relaxed, although almost every time I've been there it's been incredibly hot inside. One time this actually led to us leaving earlier than we had planned to, unfortunately. The staff are not overly friendly, but nice enough. Overall, S'mug is a great place for lunch with a friend if you're in the West End!

Flat white, mug of tea and rice krispy cake. Yum!! #yelpgallery

Only ever had coffee and a cake here but ohhhh the coffee is good! I favour a flat white most days, and there is nothing quite like a good strong, rich coffee alongside some home baking, and S'mug delivers both alongside friendly service in a cosy interior. I wonder how many people use the Starbucks just around the corner and miss out on S'mug? Well it's their loss as the few times I've been in here in the past (pre-Yelp days) I've always been impressed. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, happy to chat and take those few extra moments to make you feel valued as a customer. The WiFi is free, and have I mentioned that the coffee is pretty damn good? Only downsides are the size, but I guess that's where part of the name comes from as it can be a little snug at times, but don't let that put you off.

Turkey bacon and Brie bagel with a large chai latte

A cute place with not much fuss. It feels like one of those cafes that would be an an office complex. The chai was great, and came in a huge mug, the turkey bacon and Brie bagel I got for lunch was...serviceable. Tasty enough because the ingredients are but a bit...meh! I walked in from the freezing rain and was blasted with their heating. Good in theory I guess, but I couldn't strip off fast enough and sat there melting while trying to talk to my friend. It's quite small, with not much table space and was quite bustling at 3pm on a Monday! If I'm passing and have a chai craving I'll go back, but overall not wowed.

The solution in Glasgow is to forget boring run-of-the-mill 'full' anythings for breakfast or brunch and go to Papercup instead. I don't even drink coffee, which they are known for. I need to try a hot chocolate here one of these days. My friend ordered an oat milk one on this visit and said it tasted like a dessert in itself. Vegan, veggie, or gluten-free? No problem. Papercup has you covered. I've come here on multiple occasions and requested gluten-free bread without anyone batting an eye. Most American restaurants seem to want to make you feel like a criminal to even ask. My egg omelette on this visit had so many yummy toppings and was so big, bread wasn't even needed. It's a wonder these wizards can make such creations in such a small space! We happened to nab the corner table directly across from the cake case and I watched as our food was made with so much love. A drizzle of sauce, a squeeze of lime...this is the kind of place you want to get behind because they treat you like part of the family. Caveat: this place is small and you'll want to go at downtimes if you can (avoid breakfast/brunch on the weekends, for example) or else you'll be stuck outside waiting for a table to free up. You'll see locals popping in for their usual coffee orders and a muffin, then pop back out. For such a small shop, they have an oddly large unisex bathroom in the back. I remember the first time I had to use their facilities and being pleasantly surprised that it wasn't the size of a closet like you'd find in London. But let's face it, a place like this wouldn't exist in London in the first place, would it?

It was a rainy day: drizzling : that consistency of rain that makes you feel a bit run down. I was met with the most delicious, warming coffee: a very smooth latte, that had such a lovely taste that there was no need for a drop of sugar. They were out of most of their pastries by the time I sat in--due to their popularity, I have no doubt. I chose one of their remaining items: a small cake that had a touch of lemon and a raspberry on top of a creamy frosting. It was delicious--a welcomed treat when I felt in need of a pick me up. I did not have a chance to test their food so am unable to comment. Do note however: This is a VERY small place. Cozy to be sure, but small and by no means for larger groups. It is ideal for the soloist and duos to come in and have a fairly quick coffee, cake, and food (I assume). This is NOT a place to study. There are no comfortable lounge chairs, chairs or tables. The seating is composed of stools that reside at two bars. It's kind of reminding me of Italian style cafes where you drink your espresso at the bar, across from the barista who just served it to you (though in Rome, they don't offer you stools even!). Given the level of their coffee and cake, I'll be back again soon.

Glaswegians, your cafes have definitely spoiled me and I can't find anything that compares to this in the U.S. When you walk in, you automatically get this cozy and warm feeling. Try to get a seat in the upstairs dining area, because this is where you will feel the most warmth. I also like sitting in the bar stools by the window because I like looking outside at the rain. If you find yourself waiting for a table, just take that time to browse the pastries, savory foods laid out, and even their selection of cookbooks. Their selection of cake and tarts change daily, but if they have leftovers one day then they serve the leftovers the next day until they are gone, but a lot of the time their pastries sell out on the first day. Bonus to this is that your pastries are definitely fresh! But the pastries still taste good even if they are a day old. Trust me. My go-to pastries were the Belgian Chocolate Cake or the vanilla custard tarts. This cake has hazelnuts inside of it and is served with raspberries, chocolate bits, dusted with sugar on top. If you love chocolate, this cake is the way to go. The vanilla custard tarts reminded me of home (because I would get Egg Tarts at Chinese bakeries and this vanilla custard tart tasted just like a egg tart) The only difference is that the tart at Kember & Jones had flaky layers of crust, which made the tart even better. My go-to drinks are hot chocolate or the Moroccan Fresh Mint Tea. The hot chocolate is served with foam and little chocolate bits on top. The Mint tea is served in a clear glass, but it comes hot (which was weird because I didn't think you would serve hot drinks in a glass) but I understood why because it has a bunch of mint leaves in it that changes the color of the drink to a light tan. It's cute and if you have a sore throat, it will make you feel better. Other things that I have tried and loved were the Warm Waffle (because it was served with syrup and fresh fruit), the French Lemonade (It was pink lemonade with a little bit of sourness), and the macarons (They make different ones each week. Try all of them because they go fast! I have to say during Christmas time their Christmas pudding one tastes pretty good, too.) Last thing to note is that the staff is very nice. I never really feel pushed to leave. They are polite and attentive.
