When I tried calling to get directions she didn't answer the phone. Once I arrived she said she has a bad cell signal inside. Maritza was nice enough but proceeded to tell me how she loses money on her Groupon deals. It felt as though she was guilting me to give her a big tip. I had a haircut in mind (modified pixie). I even had pictures to demonstrate the cut. She ended up giving me a basic bob. When I asked her to go shorter in back she proceeded to tell me she could go much higher. Wrong! I've had it done before. She didn't seem to skilled in modern cuts. As she was finishing up with me another client walked in. She asked that she wait in the hall and pretty much rushed me out. I will NOT be going back.

I was there for my platinum color which he has done twice since I have lived in the state of Florida. Needless to say it was the worst experience of my entire life. Whenever I get colored at Island trend my scalp is always greased before the chemicals are applied. There was no preparation however the assistant did tell me that I had balding spots at the top of my head and took a picture so that I could see it. At that time she should have recommended that I not color my hair but she did not. The chemicals started to burn immediately and I did mention to her that it started to burn I sat there for 45 minutes burning. Getting the color platinum is a very long process if done properly it can take up to 3 to 4 hours I know because I've had it several times. However this time was different to make a long story short I left there with scabs on my scalp and had to cut off all my hair because it was burnt. I did notify the owner to let him know that I had scabs in my head and his reply was to give him a call. I will not be going back to Island trend. When you have someone in your chair Mr. Romeo give them your undivided attention stop talking to people while working on the clients. To this day September 9 I still have not heard from Mr. Romeo. The wait is always long the color is good but what's the purpose of having an appointment if you still have to wait. Be prepared to wait and watch a movie!

He was recommended by a good friend of mine. She said that he cuts hair well, in addition to coloring hair. I asked her if Melvin worked on natural hair and she advised me yes. My hair is fairly long but I had decided I wanted a change and wanted a short hair cut. When Melvin got to me I showed him a picture of the style I wanted. And then I showed him a picture of a shorter style and told him I wanted the color that was in that picture. I advised Melvin that I had never colored my hair before and was concerned. He made some comment about needing to know how to moisturize your hair. Melvin cut off some hair and it looked like I still had quite a bit of hair left. Melvin had a lady apply the color. As she started applying the color I said to her this dye is strong and how it is over powering. I asked her if it was safe and she said I had nothing to worry about. I told her that I could feel something strange and that it seemed worse at one specific spot. She asked me if I have allergies and I told her no but that I had never had my hair dyed before, that I have a very sensitive scalp and that I went natural because anytime I got a permed I would get burns on my scalp. She said don't worry this won't happen with this. I was still concerned but she assured me that it's fine. After sitting with the color in my hair for 40 minutes they washed it out and then Melvin added another color to the tips. I am giving you short version of what happened and only telling the important details. Then I was sat under the dryer for a little. Then back to Melvin's chair. Melvin didn't comb out my hair. I have never gone to a natural hairdresser where they don't use a wide-tooth comb to comb out my hair or if it is short pick it out and untangle my hair. The only time that was done was when my hair was washed initially. I was confused but figured he knew what he was doing. He used a comb that had small teeth and that were close together. I said to him maybe if you use a wide tooth comb it would be better and he said this comb is good and he started cutting my hair. No combing through my hair, or using a pick or anything. Then I saw him pull out some hair and cut and he did this a couple of times. He added some of his own product which was a gel. He said it has moisturizer in it. The front of my hair was flopping down and it didn't look anything like the picture. He said oh once it dries it will look how you wanted it. When I got in my car and got a better look I couldn't believe how he had butchered my hair. I'm not one that is bothered by cutting off my hair. I always figure it will grow back. However as long as the style is nice. I looked like a drowned cat. My hair looked nothing like the picture I had showed him. As soon as I got home I washed my hair and styled it myself. It looked much better however I have pieces of hair that is long and pieces of hair that is short. It's just a mess. That night my scalp was itching me like crazy. And I'm thinking it can't be dirty as it was just washed and conditioned that day. Sunday the itching was even worse. When I looked in the mirror there was redness all along my hairline and bumps, the back of my neck on the side close to my ears there were a bunch of bumps and redness. I couldn't believe I was having an allergic reaction to the dye. When I got to work on Monday it had gotten worse. A coworker gave me an Allegra and the itching eased up a little however the bumps still persisted badly. I called my doctor and was given a prescription for my scalp and the bumps around my hairline etc. This is the worse experience I've ever had with a hairdresser. I called Melvin and let him know that he should have done a dye test on me before applying the dye. He agreed. I also let Melvin know that he should stick to doing relaxed hair as he sure isn't a natural hairdresser. That he butchered my hair. Melvin wanted to argue with me and I let him know that I wasn't calling to argue but calling as a courtesy to let him know that as a professional he should be aware that people may have an allergic reaction to dye and he should do a test and that he should not work on natural hair as he doesn't have a clue.

It's a Jamaican salon and surprisingly I'm not even biased (I'm Jamaican) their service is that outstanding on their own. The first time I went I was serviced by Simone and the subsequent times I always ask for Brunelle who is one of my friend's old stylists. They have mastered the art of convo with clients, they can sense if you're chatty and will teeter away with you and will also not pressure you to talk if you're like me who genuinely likes her salon/spa time to be a moment for her to nap/collect her thoughts/read a book/play on her iphone lol. What I love about here is that they take their TIME! I imagine they could rush you if you asked but despite it always being busy and a steady stream of clients they would NEVER dream of hurrying you along for their next appointment - I think they actually book people far enough apart to ensure that. While I'm left deep conditioning Brunelle never jumps to someone else, she sits and waits, makes me feel VERY special and like I'm getting my money's worth. Seriously, they spend I think about 40 min just washing, deep and protein conditioning me. When they blow you out, they put in oil, wrap your hair, and place you under the dryer. A cut is included with something like a relaxer. Their service is really THAT good. And it's such a beautiful space. When referring me my friend warned me that they're pricey but I don't think so at all, $75 for a relaxer (with trim), and once a girl told me they $25 for a wash and set and $25 for a cut, which I think is a steal. You can't tip on card so bring cash!
