This place is a great and cheap way to rent snorkeling equipment. It's well worth it, especially if you decide to go to a few different places to snorkel around the island. Snorkel Bob's is a good place to rent snorkel equipment. They have three levels of equipment and I usually get the most expensive ones. We usually rent for a week and it costs $35 for the week for fins, snorkel and mask. The three different levels are for masks of varying degree silicone. They give you a bottle of anti-fog, a map of the local snorkel spots and a fish guide. Not much else to say other than if you go snorkeling a lot, then you should just buy your equipment. In and out in under 15 minutes with our gear. Furthermore, the prescription masks work great. I've never had one before, and the snorkel experience was way improved. Now I wish I'd snagged an underwater camera. my only thought vs other reviews is that you should NOT get the insurance. First, it's insurance. By definition, they have to make money on it. If the gear retails for over $ 100, then it's a less than 1% chance of theft. Second, yes, thieves abound -- on the beaches and at trails. Will they steal your gear when you're on the beach? No, because your gear is on you!It's cheap insurance, so get it if you're nervous, but I say not worth it. read more

I want to say thanks for the treatment I was given when I rented snorkeling gear from the Oahu store. They were very knowledgeable about what I was looking for, needed prescription goggles, and how to use them. This was my first time snorkeling and I had a blast. I was with my son and daughter in law so at least I had someone with experience with me. I only rented for two days and then we decided to go later in the week and Snorkel Bob's was very accommodating with extending my rental. The prices were great and the equipment was in excellent shape. I could see all the fish clearly. I would recommend anyone to go here, especially if you need glasses as bad as I do. We had a great experience renting from Snorkel Bob's this past week! Our plan was to snorkel at Hanauma Bay (make sure you get tickets online starting at 7:00 the day prior). We didn't have snorkeling gear or much knowledge on the subject so decided to head over to Snorkel Bob's. Dave greeted us and made us feel right at home. He made sure to fit us with all the equipment we needed. He was very kind and friendly which made my kids feel at ease. My wife wasn't able to come to the shop but he was able to correctly gauge her mask size based off a picture I was able to show him and he was absolute right on! The mask fit her face perfectly. Our family had a great experience snorkeling. Honestly, Dave gave us the best service we experienced on our trip to Honolulu...better than anything we encountered in the many restaurants we dined in and tours we took. We will absolute be going back to Snorkel Bobs next time we're in town and I hope Dave's there when we walk through the door. Price: cheap and reasonable Service: AWESOME!!! The person we spoke to, Kiko, was very helpful in answering our questions. She gave us lots of advice about where to go for boogie boarding, what's safe, what the weather would be like, etc. One of the most awesome perk about this place is that they have a drop off box for after hours. This is the only beach rental place that I've been to so far that has this feature. This means that even if the store is closed (they close at 5pm), you can still return your rentals. This is really helpful because a lot of ppl still stay at the beach past 5pm, and for tourists who may have to leave the island early the next day, they don't have to stress out about not being able to return the gear and be charged for the cost of the gear. read more

My snorkeling experience was so much better with the high quality equipment (no leakage, no fog, and I can actually breathe!!! No water going in). My family and I live here in Oahu. We really enjoy snorkeling and all water sports. On Monday, 8/10, we had just left Blue Planet and had purchased a couple SUP boards with carbon paddles, spending a little over 3k. I say this because we we're headed to Snorkel Bob's to purchase snorkel gear for my family of 5. We've overused our Costco gear and figured it was time. When we walked in to SB, we were not greeted but still, didn't think much of it. We walked to the right where the snorkel masks and I asked the lady if these were the ones available for purchase. I then asked her if they custom make them and she condescendingly told me that they are sold by size. I followed with another question as to whether or not they had the full face masks and was once again met with the same tone. I was put off by her attitude, her unwillingness to walk over, greet us and answer any questions that I decided to just leave. As we were walking out, she referred us to another store that has affordable snorkel gear. Who does she think she's talking to? We were ready to purchase 5 sets but due to her poor service, she lost a big sale. Perhaps that's not a big deal considering they are smack center in the middle of Waikiki but I certainly won't give them my time, money, referral or business. read more

I booked a morning snorkeling trip with Ocean Joy Cruises through Snorkel Bob's. Snorkel Bob's website is misleading and out of date. I thought I was booking a snorkel trip on a sailboat with less than 20 people on board. What I actually got was 49 people on a motor ship. The trip itself was a fine trip. Friendly staff. Several years ago I found Snorkel Bob ad while reading through a tourist magazine. I decided to check it out since they advertised themselves as convenient and priced affordable. To date, I have not found a better place to rent quality snorkel gear from than Snorkel Bob's. I understand some folks want to purchase and use their own gear and think that $6/day $9 for the regular ones and $11 for prescription is too much for snorkel gear. However, as an avid snorkeler, I can assure you that their gear is quality. If you spent around the same amount or slightly more at Walmart or the ABC stores in Hawaii, you won't get the same quality gear and your mask will leak. That is probably one of the most annoying things while snorkeling and swimming with the fishes. If you aren't ready to purchase your own gear or do not want to lug your gear (myself included), rent here. The folks at this store are avid snorkelers themselves (or they know a lot about sites). When you rent from them, they will give you a sheet of paper telling you about the different sites. It's hilarious to read and if you talk to the employees there, they can provide greater insight on the day of tide conditions and where you should or should not be swimming. They have knowledge of off beat areas to snorkel and places that are often free to park and free to snorkel (yes--- beyond Hanauma Bay). The gear rental process is simple, quick, and efficient. Purchase the gear insurance for $1.50 and have a peace of mind. Trust me, it's worth it because there are plenty of thieves in and around Waikiki and even at other sites. Easy return process. You can drop it off while they are open from 9am-5pm or you can drop it off anytime in their drop box. They will give you the drop box code when you rent. Simply use the code and drop it off. As part of your rental, you can get anti fog solution, but you must return the bottle or get charged $3. It's great solution for defogging the mask. You can also drop off the gear anywhere they have a store/outlet on any of Hawaii's island. This makes it easy for inter island tripping. In the past, they've also given me Snorkel Bob's snorkeling book. I've yet to read through it, but I probably should because it has photos of fishes and great recommendations and places to snorkel. Great location right off the freeway going H-1 West (that means you are going towards Pearl City, Leeward Coast and the opposite of Hanauma Bay). If you want to go to Hanauma Bay from this direction, make a right going out of the lot and then go all the way down till you hit the main drag with the street lights. Make a right and you will see the freeway entrance. read more

I bought a prescription mask from Snorkel Bob's Maui store over 15 years ago and am still using it. Recently the mask started leaking so I stopped at the Honolulu store with the objective of getting another mask (apparently they can supply most prescription lenses for myopia within a half hour or so). The charming young lady looked at the mask, played around with the clips, handed it back to me and said "See if this works. You probably don't need a new mask". The mask is working fine again and hopefully will last another 15 years. But I will definitely be going back to this store, if I ever need snorkel gear. I went here to rent snorkeling gear for my wife & me instead of renting it at Hanauma Bay. The help I received from the staff here was outstanding. I got the better equipment & figured I'd pay a premium, but that was ok. But, I'm frugal & I waited for the price. I actually couldn't believe how affordable it was, so I rented it for 2 days instead of 1. What a deal. The young lady who helped me was very helpful with suggestions and didn't rush the transaction. The "ultimate truth" package (mask, snorkel, fins) was $32/week, and worked pretty well (I can't compare to their "Budget" $9/week package). They are very friendly, and have inter-island exchange for pick-up and drop-off. We dropped off a boogie-board in Honolulu and picked up another one in Kona two days later, and they didn't charge those two days against our week-long rental. They get minus-one star for advertising the "Dolphin Excursions" trip on Oahu. The $105 itself isn't a rip-off (it seems to be the going rate, and comparable to what we paid for a similar-but-better tour to Molokini in Maui), but the operation felt a little sleazy. We did see dolphins. But it felt like a zoo. Someone points out "hey! there's dolphins!" and everyone stampedes to try to see the dolphins. The second snorkel point is for fish. They throw out food to lure fish to the area, then you jump in and look at fish. The fish are nice, but I don't like that they were lured to the boat for a show. Instead, wake up at 5:30am (same as for Dolphin Excursions), and pay $40 for a taxi to Hanauma Bay. I'll write about Hanauma Bay in its own entry. read more

Go in, hello there!, quick questions, couple options, do you want this?, do you want that?, no pushiness involved, and you're out. Wow. I even had prescription goggles and with the upgrades (why not right? we're on vaca!!!!!!!) it was like 60 bucks or so! Not bad not bad. If your going to Oahu and are planning to go snorkeling, I would recommend to get your rental here. Snorkel Bob's has one of the best prices for snorkel rentals that I've seen anywhere on the island. Anytime we to go Oahu, we rent from here. They offer 3 levels of rentals based on the quality of the goggles. I usually go with the highest level since its cheap anyways. Rentals include goggles, snorkel, fins, anti fog solution, and a caring bag. We also rent bugieboards from this place since some of the people in our party don't swim well. One of the nicest features is the after hours drop off box. With your receipt there is a code for the lock fro the drop off box. You can just drop your gear off when your done eve if the store is closed. Very convenient. read more

We've been to Snorkel Bob's many a time (starting with our honeymoon in '02) and have never been disappointed with the quality of equipment or the sales staff. Only once, when we went to Maui a couple years ago, did we use another vendor for our snorkel gear. Can't even remember the name of the outfit...and they weren't bad...but it was closer and more convenient to where we were staying so we switched and used them instead of SB (Snorkel Bob's). But in truth, I have no reason to change my loyalty and this last trip to Oahu was no different. It's just part of our routine if we are planning on doing any snorkeling: Go to SB. One year, when we had the kids, we drove straight there from the airport....all four of us with luggage....in a convertible Mustang. It started raining on the H1 so we pulled over, quickly put up the top and continued on our way to SB. When we arrived, the sales staff literally pressed their noses to the window as they watched our family unfold from the car....first one leg, then an arm, then a suitcase, then a person.... When we walked in they were howling with laughter and couldn't believe I had fit my entire family in a Mustang with five suitcases (yes 5 with four people...those were the days of 2 checked bags per person, no charge) & carry on bags! We looked like the Clampett's arriving in Beverly Hills. Back to SB--I wear perscription glasses (no contacts for me) so when I first read about SB in the "Blue Book" (Oahu Revealed) and how they provide RX masks, I knew this was the place for us. Price was never an issue because there was really only one choice for me. Although I see now they advertise the $9 a week special....you aren't going to be happy with the low grade stuff. If we are there for a week with the family....you are going to spend a couple hundred bucks on rentals. It's just the way it is. If I plan for $200 and they total it to be $180...BONUS! I love it when it's cheaper than I expected. This last trip with just my wife and I...one week rental for two sets (one RX), plus theft insurance (good idea) and tax---$77.70 They must have discounted my RX set. I see it's supposed to be $44 a week. In terms of value...this is Hawaii. That's a deal of meal for dinner! So is the price justified? Looking at it that way, a week of no hassle, top quality gear rental? YES. As I said before, the gear has always been top grade for us. I have a goatee so I know some leaking is what I have to deal with, but I have my technique for reducing some of it. However, I will say on this last trip the mask seemed to fit better than ever and even with my "technique" it still seemed to leak less than usual. It's never been unbearable, but this trip was exceptionally good. Same with the no fog goop they provide. Maybe it's because I finally read the directions (ha,ha) and realized you should apply while DRY and then quickly rinse.....maybe I wasn't doing it that way before....but either way, this trip we had NO problems with fogging. None, zip, nadda. Three drops in each lens, rub around with your finger and quickly rinse. But don't rub it off...just dip and rinse. Shake the mask off as you bring it out of the water. Don't want any of that goop residue mixed with some water to get in your eys. It worked fantastic. Do heed their advice about NOT getting the goo in your eyes. Rinse your hands thoroughly before wiping your eyes. I know, it seems like a no brainer. Your in the water, your hands are going to get rinsed anyway right? Well, just rinsing them isn't usually enough....rub them in the water....on your suit...whatever. Just make sure you have NO goop on your fingers before touching your eyes or you will "feel the burn". That was a lesson learned the hard way. The staff is always super helpful about pointing out places to go. What the conditions are like. Where to avoid. The only negative is that sometimes.....and even then I have a hard time saying this.....but sometimes I feel the pressure for an up-sell. Such as for one of the trips they promote. It isn't like they are holding one arm behind my back....but it is noticeable....and for me....since we are what I would consider "loyal regulars" and VOCAL about it when we arrive....then I don't really like the sales push. We know what we want. We never question the price. Don't try and talk me into the "Dolphin Exursions" or whatever special they have going on that week. I realize they are in business and the "add on sales" are probably commission based for the staff. But, I also know that you need to READ your customers and know when it's appropriate to push the up-sell or not. I know, I know....some of you are probably thinking, "They are just suggesting other things we might enjoy based on ideas and opinions we've already expressed." Maybe, but it doesn't feel that way. I bring all my visitors to SB's to rent their gear. I recently brought 6 people to rent snorkle gear and the girl that was supposedly helping us was such a biatch! Totally eye rollng and annoyed that they asked questions...um hello they all upgraded to the $35/week rental. I would have rather taken them to Costco and got their own set for $40. Less drama and better service. Afterwards she had the audacity to try to sell us tours..are you f#cking serious??? Another girl was helping ring them up and the biatch was telling her to make sure it was under her number. Hmm, maybe if you were nicer, you'd have more sales and people would actually want to buy tours from you. I think the user name on the receipt was JA or something like that. Really happy with the service and price. I didn't really have my act together when I arrived but the young lady took it in stride. I left with all the equipment I needed for an afternoon of fun and even gave me a map where she circled some good dive sites that didn't require reservations. I rented from them 2x this past week. Once in the Honlulu location and once in the Kona location. Both places had very friendly and helpful staff and great customer service. I was able to get in and out of both places picking up and dropping off in less than 5 min. The Honolulu location is a little bit of a walk from the beach (about 1.2 miles, it took me about 25 min to walk each way) but you can stop at Rainbow Inn for some good Loco Moco if you get hungery. Otherwise, it's really easy to get to by car. I would recommend getting their top of the line Seamo mask and fin set. It's only $9 a day and has a great big lens for better viewing. They give you defogger (which the crappy places along the beach don't give you) which can make or break your snorkeling trip. Without it, your mask constantly fogs up and you can't see anything but a San Francisco summer. You also get a nice fish guide (which my wife suprised me when she saw a Convict Tang and actually called it by it's name because she usually has no clue about fish) and a print out of the best places to snorkel. Just one warning though , the directions on the snorkel guide is sometimes vague or little off but otherwise it's really helpful. read more
