Dangerous Experience and Negligent Staff! Snowshoe Mountain Resort Adventure Dinner- Not worth the risk!
Review of Snowshoe Mountain Resort
I traveled with a group of friends to Snowshoe Mountain Resort this past weekend. It was the busiest weekend of the season, and we had made reservations months in advance for the activity marketed to groups as an Adventure Dinner at a back country hut. The entire group was looking forward to this, and it was the last evening of our weekend trip. Had the adventure dinner been marketed properly, I would not have as many concerns. However, the experience was incredibly dangerous and the woman organizing the group, Carol, was outright rude to several members of our group on multiple occasions.
The day of our scheduled dinner it had been dreary with significant amounts of freezing rain. I monitored my email, anticipating that there would be a cancellation for the trip. It involved a 2 mile trip by RZR ATV on a trail to get to the hut, and conditions started worsening as the evening went on. When my group arrived to the Snowshoe Top of the World Rental Center, I inquired about whether or not the trip was still on. I was told that it was, and no refunds were permitted, but to check with the guides when we checked in. As we checked in, I expressed concern about the freezing rain and conditions of the trail and was told by Carol "It's just rain, you'll be fine." The tour was set to leave at 6pm, so it was already very dark outside. Our group of 11 was to occupy 3 ATVs and we were told that anyone could drive as long as they were over 18 and were not planning to drink that evening at the dinner.
After a very short and inadequate briefing, we were told to grab a helmet and head out to the vehicles. Carol indicated that there were varying conditions on the trail, from slush, to ice, to dirt, so to follow her closely. This short briefing left no time for questions and left us feeling that conditions were not bad and anyone should be able to handle the drive. I only wish that I had followed my gut and opted out of the trip entirely at this point.
As we started the journey on the trail, it became apparent very quickly that many sections of the trail were sheets of ice. On top of this, there was very little visibility out of the RZR, no heat, and rain pouring into the vehicle. The windshield kept fogging up and needed to be wiped to get even the slightest bit of visibility. About 5 minutes into our trip, one of the RZRS carrying 4 of our friends spun out, doing 2 back to back 360s on the trail, heading straight for a tree. The trail went up the mountain and was very narrow, with steep drop offs in many parts. This alone would be frightening to a beginner driver in even the best conditions.
As our 2 mile drive continued, all vehicles were sliding and there were many close calls for collisions. The guide in front was not within sight for those of us in the middle of the group, so we could not visualize which part of the trail to stay toward. This made for a terrifying experience that could have resulted in serious injury or worse. I am very thankful that no one was hurt, but the negligence of the staff, Carol in particular, is astounding to me. No amount of money is worth putting people in danger, and there should have been no option to drive in these conditions. A full refund should have been issued. This was not an inexpensive activity, with each guest paying over $100 to attend.
As if things could not get worse, we arrived at the hut and were served our dinner. We had to submit meal choices with the reservation, and my group all opted for either steak or salmon. The salmon was practically inedible as served and was not cooked. One member of the party did not receive the steak she ordered, and when we requested the salmon be re-cooked we were told that "salmon isn't supposed to be cooked much" and offered a new piece. The photo below shows the difference of the original salmon served and the new piece. Carol was also present in the hut, helping to orchestrate the dinner. It was clear that the staff was not prepared for our group, but the two gentlemen working for her were kind and accommodating. Carol was clearly irritated and made several unprofessional and biting remarks to our group. When I asked for a glass of iced tea, she sharply told me "I only have two hands!" and walked away. There was no customer service or care or concern for our safety or experience shown by Carol.
Finally, as our group prepared to leave the hut to return home, I was extremely nervous about the ride back. Conditions had not improved, and now a few hours had passed. We embarked on the ride home and at one point were stopped. My group thought one of the RZRs may have broken down ahead of us, so we sat waiting for instruction. A guide approached our vehicle and told us that the trail was a sheet of ice, and we would need to hit the gas the entire way up the hill in fro read more
