My studmuffin, brother, our friend Matt, and I decided to ring in 2015 at Snowshoe Resort. This resort is touted as the largest ski resort on the East Coast. The scenery is quite nice and is indeed the best I have seen of all the slopes on the east coast. Nonetheless, they also utilize artificial snow machines. For me, it didn't take away from the experience because I have never skied on real, fallen snow. There were ample snow machines so the surface was quite soft for me. That's great for me, as a skier. YAY!
You're probably wondering then, why I am giving this establishment a sickly 2 stars. Well, let's start off with the poor internet and cellular reception up there. This is not Snoeshow's fault because the area is actually located near a no disturbance area; there's a conservatory nearby. However, if members of a group separated, it makes it hard to meet up afterwards if the phones aren't working. Honestly, that's not enough to peeve me because let's face it, we have lived with less technology before. However, we were discriminated against while we were there. Some of the discrimination were not from the employees of the establishment. For instance, we had some people randomly come up to us and asked us if we liked dragons. That's mostly due to ignorance but not malevolence. Other times, it was from the employees of Snowshoe. While at the bar at Sunset Cantina, my Asian boyfriend went to the bar to get me a drink and was not even acknowledged by the bartender even though he was directly in front of the bartender for more than 10 minutes. My Caucasian friend, Matt, seeing this, went up to the bar and was immediately acknowledged by the bartender. The incident was very upsetting to my bf to the point that he wanted to leave. These are just two examples of what we experienced while we were there.
Another issue I have with Snowshoe is the overall poor customer service of their restaurants. Like cruise ships, Snowshoe seem to hire many employees internationally. It was very clear the employees were not adequately trained. For instance, at Sunset Cantina, we arrived at 9:20, with 3-4 parties ahead of us. The restaurant closes at 10. The internationally-hired host and hostess told us they will put our name on the list but there's a chance the restaurant will close before we'd be seated. That basically means we could be waiting a a futile 40 minutes to be seated.
Another incident that outraged my friend was when we went to Cheat Mountain Pizza. The hostess, an international employee, wrote his name on a sheet of paper and informed him that there will be a 25 minutes wait. Our party stepped out for a little bit because the restaurant was crowded. After 20 minutes, we came back in to check on our status. Apparently, Matt's name was written on another sheet of paper and the new hostess does not know our place in the que. She went to talk to the staff about it and they accused him of writing his name down on the sheet of paper. Matt was very offended because he felt they were questioning his integrity. The hostess wanted to put his name back on the list, but at the bottom of the list and Matt was not happy about that either. He asked to speak with the manager after ten minutes or so of disputing with the hostess. The manager sided with the his staff. Finally and thankfully, a party who were waiting there the whole time stepped up and said that indeed he saw the hostess write Matt's name on the paper before we left. That was when the manager stopped arguing and allowed us to be seated. Matt was upset because it took a 3rd party vouching for him for the restaurant to acknowledge their wrong-doing.
It was embarrassing for us to wait there while Matt was talking to the restaurant, but I completely understand why he was so upset. Everyone in my party works in the service industry or have worked in the service industry and agreed we would have not handled the situation in that manner.
One of the employees who tried to argue with us eventually was our server. She was trying very hard to save her hiny because by being super friendly to us. My friend ordered a pizza with mushrooms in it and she said she's glad he enjoys it, to her, mushroom feels like toejam. YUCK! Why would you say that?!?!
Moreover, when we later ordered pizzas to-go, I asked an employee for a bag to carry the napkins and sauce. She looked at me and said, we don't have a bag big enough to carry the pizza boxes...
Snowshoe pretty much has a monopoly on the everything up there, so that pretty much sucks, when their service sucks so badly.
Despite the negative experiences, we made the most of our trip and had fun. Besides, we also met many nice folks elsewhere. However, I highly doubt I will return to Snowshoe. read more
