This review is for their performance in Houston…read more If you've been to other Cirque Du Soleil in the race park before then you know that there's no way around paying for parking. It will cost you $12 to park. The good thing about the parking is it was super organized so even though there were long lines of cars trying to park, the lines were moving; and once I had paid, the attendees directed me where to go and it took me less than a minute to park. Before you can enter the Grand Chapiteau, you have to go through your typical security measure. There are no metal detectors but they will look inside your purse if you have one. I was here with my sister and she didn't have a purse so we didn't even get checked. She did have a jacket on her but they didn't check it. This means you could sneak in your own snacks/drinks should you be inclined to. Why would one be inclined to sneak in their own snacks/drinks? Well, a bottled water/soda will run you $5. Nachos will run you $10. A Cotton candy will run you $8. Hot dog will run you $7. You see where I'm going with this? If you're coming here with your family (kids, wife, girlfriend, whatever), then you be better be ready to be dropping some $$$$. As for the show, it's your typical CDS stage/seating. You have the round stage with the seats surrounding them. I was lucky enough to get good seats to the right side and three rows from the stage so I was able to see everything clearly. If you opt to sit toward the back, some times you can't even see the faces of the performers clearly. The show started at eight on the dot. Some of the performances are pretty typical CDS where it would amaze you what a human body can do with training (contortionist, balancing act, juggling). Some of the other acts were more creative (invisible circus, finger dancing, animal impression). One act in particular was a combination of both where you have this dude playing yo-yo in the middle of the stage, but holy cow, he could control them yo-yos like they were a part of his body. I felt like he should have been competing in international yo-yo championship or something. All in all, I was happy with the show. This was also my sister's first Cirque Du Soleil and so everything was brand new to her and she was thoroughly impressed with the performances. CDS is always a fun event to go to and I definitely will go to whatever other Cirque Du Soleil shows that would make a stop in Houston.

Houston parking was $12; I parked the furthest away and still it wasn't far from the tent. I was concerned that the AC might not be working from a heads up review 4 days earlier...but, thankfully the AC was on and blowing good!! Toilets looked like porta pottys but they actually had lights and hooks to hang your purse---speaking of...I walked in the stall and there hung a yellow bag and a Kurios souvenir! I was like...HOW can one forget ALL that? Turned it in to an employee...hope the lady got her stuff back. The seats are small and very close together...I chose an end seat so I'd only have one person beside me. My seats were stage right 8 rows back...awesome! Show was exciting...as usual, I was amazed. Do yourself a favor and attend a Cirque de Soleil soon...it's well worth the $$$

A great culture center and resource for Taiwanese!…read more The place is full of Taiwanese speakers and offers both Mandarin and Taiwanese classes on weekends. It has a small library-- smaller than the Institute of Chinese Culture, but this one actually includes Marx and Lenin's works among other more unexpected selections. There's an auditorium here too. Occasional fund raisers are held for Taiwan Solidarity Union or Democratic Progressive Party candidates. On weekends, I have seen one old man sell harder-to-find, Taiwanese type vegetables he grew himself. Also, regular ping pong nights! Check it out!

Once you come inside if you already know where to go, you do not need to check in at the front desk. There is a library here with lots of Chinese books. There usually some sort of activity here. There are class rooms upstairs and on the first floor and I did not see an elevator to the second floor.

I was directed by the TECO Los Angeles office to contact the Houston office regarding my entry permit. I am currently transitioning from OPT to an F1 visa for a Houston-based school starting in August, so I simply needed to clarify which office had the proper jurisdiction to process my application. I left a polite voicemail briefly explaining my situation. A female staff member called me back and immediately began verbally attacking me. Bizarrely, she aggressively interrogated me about why I didn't leave my phone number in the voicemail--despite the obvious fact that she had found it and was actively calling me back on that exact number. When I calmly and politely tried to ask whether LA or Houston should handle my case, she escalated her abuse. She spoke with a shocking level of arrogance and hostility, telling me that "people like you shouldn't go to Taiwan" and telling me to just "cancel the trip." She went out of her way to say that I am unqualified, that TECO LA wouldn't help me either, and that I simply do not "deserve" to apply for the permit. I called seeking basic administrative guidance and was met with unwarranted personal insults and blatant discrimination. This is an embarrassing and shameful display of unprofessionalism for a representative office. No applicant should ever be subjected to this kind of verbal abuse and superiority complex.

My daughter attended one of the larger dance studios in Katy for 7 years and we've been slowly disappointed. We were not pleased at all. A friend of ours recommended Starz and we made a switch last year. My daughter is much happier, and she's learning so much more. It's cheaper than those larger studios, but it's so much better. The staff at Starz is wonderful. They actually dance and interact with the students as opposed to sitting on the floor and directing them. They don't yell at the kids and belittle them like the other studio did and did I mention that they are very reasonable. You will not have to mortgage your home to pay monthly tuition. I've been nothing but pleased with SDC and I've seen such a big improvement in my daughter just over the summer.

The only thing I don't love is that you have to make a reservation for the play session you want and it's not that long. I can understand that it's probably for the purpose of cleaning in between sessions and regulating the amount of people coming in but I think for the price it should be longer play times. I also wish there was a membership option. But other than that we still love it here.
