Booked an appointment for 11:30 AM and still wasn't seen until 2:30 PM. What's the point of making an appointment if you're going to wait three hours past it? Staff member she(white american lady -short hair) ignored me and walking away. I had to chase her and block her, to get an answer. Then she said it's going to take ~2 hours for those who don't have appointments. You made me wait for weeks and then you take people with no appointments. To add insult to injury, then this office started taking appointments of those people, who came after me. Completely unorganized and disrespectful of people's time. This is a government office so similarly to DMV, I don't think we can expect much from a Social Security Administration office. Tips: - Try to call and make an appointment so that you don't have to wait here too long - Don't come on Mondays if you can. It seems to be more crowded. - Come late afternoon, at least the wait is a little less - Expect to always wait a while. With an appointment and come a little closer to closing time (3:30PM), you might not have to wait over 1.5 hours like I did. - If you want to get there right when they open, then come early like 8:15/8:30 AM and get in line to wait. Bring with you a chair to have a place to sit. The good thing about having an appointment is that the security guard actually goes around asking if you have an appointment and move you up to the front of the line right before he opens the door so you don't have to come as early as non-appointment ppl. Experience I got with the individuals that I interact with -Security guard/reception: not particularly friendly but I don't think he's rude. -First officer: he was very nice, polite and helpful. I wished he could have helped me the second time too. -Second officer: she wasn't friendly or nice at all. Felt like she didn't want to work there and didn't like anyone. Customer service at this office was terrible. I came here the first time to assist my mother in changing her name on the social card. After 1,5 hours waiting, we finanally were called to a cubile and being told we need to schedule an appoinment in the next 2 months for the name to be changed. The agent named Kim who refused to give me her last name, reiterated that they now transition to appoinment culture. I understand its culture but it doesnt mean you refuse to give us service after 1,5 hours waiting. I think I will make a complaint regarding unfair treatment at this office! read more

I have called several times for national and local offices and made a few appointments to local offices. I waited long time and got served to the window. All they did at this office is to let you go home and wait 2 more weeks, which actually took 5 weeks until I called mountain view office. The work attitude in this office is so bad. I don't know how they work, just sitting there and kick the ball around. Should they be hired to think about how to solve residents' issues? It's an organized place. I called the social security phone number to be told that I don't need an appointment, just walk-in. I had to call multiple times to get connected because apparently, the line disconnects us if it gets too busy. So, I arrived at this place at 3pm on a Friday. Upon entering the door, the security person asked if I had an appointment. I said no. He said go to the blue box and check in, but tap No for appointment. So, I did that and got a printout for a number. I sat and waited for 30-40 minutes and my number was called. I was helped by a very friendly lady who was telling me stories about her grandchildren. I was done in 10-15 minutes. Overall, it's an organized place inside. Fast and convenient to update our social security record. read more

Came on Friday just before Labor Day, a little after 3p.m. with no appointment. Several yelpers have mentioned the parking lot is always packed but I must've been lucky. It was pretty full but found parking right away, and towards the front of the building. Had a large purse with me so they asked to look through it when I entered. There was no line at the kiosk, had my ticket at 3:07p.m. I downloaded an album before I came so I threw my headphones on and listened to it to pass the time. Made sure to keep checking the screen so I didn't miss my number being called. Was called at 3:45. The gentleman who helped me was friendly and professional. I had all of my documents ready, and was prepared so I was out of there at 3:57. If you're coming in for a name change I highly suggest filling out the application online first. I needed to call SSI in Mountain View at (877) 319-0161 to renew my mom's yearly SSI. However, upon calling this number twice, the calls were automatically transferred to the San Jose office. I was told twice that this is the San Jose office, and I need to call the Mountain View office. Why do two different offices share one number? I have no control over the transfer within the SSI phone system! When the calls were transferred to the San Jose office, the staff, Susan and Limon were unhelpful. Their excuse was that I needed to call Mountain View, not them. I spent almost an hour on the phone without getting help. The SSI staff appears incompetent, unresponsive and super lazy! The sad news is that I have gone through this for the past 20 years. read more

Schedule an appointment!!!!!! I was waiting in line for my appointment and witness the security gentlemen turned down a handful of applicants due to no appointment. There was an elderly non speaking English woman that was trying to get in but the security kept screaming "No mam, only appointments." She end up standing on the side and tried several times to enter but failed. It was devastating to see that but at least after 45 mins someone came out to help her. I think she was the store manager. I have been calling the Cottle Road San Jose Social Security Administration office to ascertain the status of a request for an updated Medicare card reinstating part B of Medicare coverage, which I had suspended in the past because of employer health coverage. I thought when I called to check the status of my request that I would reach someone in that Cottle Road San Jose office, as I have done the last few times I checked, but this time my call was answered by someone in the Fontaine Road San Jose office - a wonderful man named Miller. He said that when there is heavy call volume, calls from other local offices are sometimes routed to people in other offices, as my call was. I'm really happy it was! Miller verified my identity in an even more thorough way than the people in the Cottle Road office did when speaking with me by telephone, which is very comforting in these times (scammers prey on people). Miller advised me that the forms I submitted were finally processed, and that my updated Medicare card should be on its way to me in the near future. I hope if you call or visit this location of the SSA that you are fortunate enough to be assisted by Miller, as I was. If his supervisors read this review, I hope they consider him for a promotion, and he should also be training others. As someone who has held positions serving the public, I know outstanding service when I receive it. Thanks, Miller - you obviously care about the people you assist, and it shows. I routinely don't take the time to write reviews, or letters unless the service received was extremely good or extremely bad and the experience with this one individual left me livid. Therefore, I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with the service I received during my recent visit to the Social Security office on March 5, 2024. As I often assist my elderly mother with her errands, this being my first time at the Social Security Office, My elderly mother and I arrived at the office at approximately 2:45 pm and registered at the kiosk, receiving ticket number 793. While waiting patiently, I noticed our number displayed on the screen for window 4. Believing it was our turn, I approached the window, while also showing our number was next, only to be abruptly yelled at by the attendant who insisted that she hadn't called our number, "I did not call your number, go back and sit down. Wait until I call your number!". Again, being my first time, I acknowledged my mistake and returned to my seat. Upon checking the display again, I observed our number had vanished, replaced by 794, which was promptly called by the same attendant at window 4. Thinking there might be a reason for the change, perhaps what we came for needed to be assisted by a different window/ person/ department. We patiently waited until only a few people remained to be assisted (after 4 pm), at which point I approached the window again. As God as my witness, politely said "Hey we were never called for assistance. You said you were going to call us, and we were never called back". Regrettably, the attendant responded in an unprofessional and disrespectful manner, claiming that we had been called three times, blaming us for not paying attention... "you were supposed to listen for your number, we already called you, you should have listened for your name, we called out three times, it's your fault. Assuming it was 100% our fault. Despite my assurance that I had been vigilant. I never left to get up to use the bathroom or go to my car, I simply glued to my seat and watched the screen the entire time. She continued to berate us. Frustrated that she was only listening to me to only say what she wanted to say, I became annoyed, irate, and frustrated, and had to interject and explained the sequence of events by stating ", "One second, one second, we came to your window when our number was up on the screen, you looked at our number and told us to sit down and that that you would be calling us. What you then did was remove our number from the screen and call number 794, which was someone else." At this point, she begrudgingly agreed to assist us, "Well I can help you since no one is waiting. We always call you must have not heard us, let me check our system." After a moment, I think she then realized that she made the mistake because she said the following, "Oh, I don't know what happened, I see that I checked you guys in". Admitting that she had made an error and couldn't explain why our number was removed from the queue. Our simple request, which took approximately five minutes, turned into a distressing experience due to her unprofessional conduct. I believe that a customer's concerns should be addressed respectfully and with empathy. Instead, we were treated with disrespect and subjected to unwarranted hostility. This behavior is unacceptable and reflects poorly on the Social Security office's commitment to providing quality service. I kindly request a thorough investigation into this matter and appropriate action to ensure that other visitors do not endure similar mistreatment. Update: Due to COVID the local S.S. office is "closed" for walk-ins evidently, however, there is a ph # on the window to call and the staff is still handling ur business. Just a lot safer now. Anyhow, I needed to request a duplicate, end of the yr , S.S. statement of my mother's, for tax purposes. So, I called the (866) ph #, listened to all the msgs, listened to my choices, selected, chose my option, then.... Held... then ring ring..."thanks for holding, we appreciate ur patience.."... still holding.. more thx for holding msgs, then... u guessed it... click click. Wtf?! That sure sounded like the hang up sound. Couldn't be! Yep, it was. So there went 4 min 24 sec of my life I'll never get bk. Great, gotta go thru this all over again & wait on hold... And then....A live person...Regina! I quickly explained to her what I needed And she looked at her computer and pulled up what it was that I needed, Asked me what address I wanted it mail to And I told her. And then she said OK she had already punched it in and sent it on its way. What... That was crazy fast and she said if you don't receive it in 3 or 4 days call us back. Easy-peasy. The woman processing my info stated 2-3 weeks for completion. After waiting about 6 weeks found out she never completed anything and had my info on hold even though she said I had everything I needed. Called a different SS office and had everything completed quickly and mailed to me. Unfortunately there is something wrong going on at this location. I would avoid and go elsewhere. Thanks to OTHER SJ office for fantastic service! I believe the Mgr was taking advantage of covid to not provide quality service. Very sad! read more

Not too bad. I Lyft here due to the reviews about the lack of parking. Good thing I did. I arrived at 850 & there was no parking & a line already started. They opened the doors right at 858am & started to let people in. Security checked my purse & when I got in there was another line for the kiosk self check in to get your ticket. Got my ticket at 907am & was called within 15-20 mins. I had my forms filled out already so it made the process faster. I was out by 950am. read more

Granted, I came here under circumstances I would not wish upon anyone else. However, from what I had experienced, they were a lot nicer than I expected them to be so that was a great relief. For some reason, maybe years of Simpsons, Family Guy and other cartoons have scarred me from thinking that people were mean, nasty, unhelpful and generally unhappy to see you. I did have to wait some time but I think I got lucky because I only waited about 30-40 minutes without an appointment and was able to get a new SS card with a simple application. I used a pen that was running out of ink but the lady didn't seem to mind. She was very sympathetic to what happened to me and even happy to give me some additional helpful tips and letting me know when my card would arrive. not bad really. read more

Didn't have an appointment so decided to come early. Arrived at 8:15 am (office opens at 9am) and there were already about 5 or 6 people waiting ahead of me. Security officer promptly opened the door at 9am and instructed people to walk inside to get a number using the blue ticketing machine that they have. Was in and out of there in 20 mins (not including the wait time before 9am). There's ample parking if you come early- just not sure if they have EV charging nearby. read more

The obvious: It's a Social Security office. Take a chill pill - you'll get through this. If you can call in advance (read: *weeks* in advance), that'd be best. I called early November to make an appointment and the only availabilities were on Dec 5 @ 11am and Jan 23 @ 8am(?). Just that, and nothing in between apparently - yikes. Once you have an appointment that you've booked *weeks* in advance, you should be pretty set. Tips: - Parking (Monday @ 10:30) was nerve-wracking, yes, but is absolutely nothing compared to other places in the Bay Area (read: Asian supermarkets on a Saturday morning, Friday night downtown, etc.) I told you -- YOU GOT THIS. - Don't be disheartened if they call your number and get you to an attendant in a booth, only to be told by the attendant that your next task is to sit in the lobby and wait with everyone else and listen for your name. All-in-all, going in and going out my complete total time was around 1.5 hours. Which again.... not a great or terrible experience (provided where you are), but definitely a bit longer than I'd anticipated (especially that I had an appt already). This review is for the overall social security office. I spent 4 hours waiting on the phone to speak to someone. I spent 2 and a half hours waiting for someone in English. Then an additional 2 hours for someone in Spanish, and mysteriously the call was just dropped at noon. In a time of need, the social security office has lacked serious professionalism and consideration for the elderly. The overall handling of phone calls needs to change! I've tried to online and all the information is incorrect, and I have no other choice but to call the offices. Poor poor poor customer service! read more

This was my first visit to any Social Security office so I'm glad I read some reviews to get an idea of what I was in for. I decided to take a chance and visit the office during my lunch hour. I had a simple transaction. I needed a replacement of my daughter's social security card as the original was lost. This could not be done online since she is not 18 yrs old. I printed/filled out the app and had the necessary documentation to process the transaction (US Passports - mine and hers). It was just before noon and the parking looked pretty full so I told myself I was willing to check out the wait. I walked in, security guard to the right said he needed to check my bag for weapons. Once I was clear he pointed out two kiosks to visit. It was simple enough to get a ticket with a number and then I took a seat. There were 8 people ahead of me but things were moving along fairly quickly. Once my number was called the rep checked in with me to see what I needed and she ensured that I had the proper documentation to process my request/transaction. I went back to the waiting room and listened for my name. Once my name was called it was a fairly quick transaction at the window. I think the whole process took me about 30-40 mins from start to finish. All in all it wasn't nearly as bad as I imagined. Even though I had an appointment, I waited 90 minutes for my turn at the window only to be treated to a woman seemed incredibly burdened by having to give me a form and tell me to wait for someone else to help me. This office location is right off of 101 near the Tully Road exit. It is actually right behind the sound barrier wall off of Fontaine Road, round the corner from Chuck-E-Cheese. I came here right at 10am hoping to renew my information for my Social Security Card. First off, it's free to just change your name or change your status on your SS Card. If you lose your card, then you must pay for a new one. When I walked in, it was a small office with rows of chairs filled with people. You have to walk to your right and go up to the automated check-in machine. If you have no appointment, they'll give you a number. And the wait isn't so bad, 15 minutes the most? After check-in you'll have just enough time to fill out the application and sit in with the crowd for about 5-10 minutes. Then you're in and then you're out. After being helped by their friendly staff, they told me that it will take about a week or two weeks for me to get my new card in the mail. I asked if there was any way I could rush it, at any cost, they said no...fail. But I guess, beggars can't be choosers. read more

The people who work here are for the most part usually very nice and helpful. They do handle all your problems with the up most importance. It turns out for more than 25 years, the system had my dad's name incorrectly spelled. Haha! So he fixed it up for me. I got here @ 7:55am believe it or not but there's plenty of parking space. (Then people start comin in) I lined up @ da appointment line. But having 2nd thought coz maybe da guard won't let me in coz I don't have appointment letter with me. I had a telephone interview yesterday. When I told him that He gave me dis okay face.(I was like thank God) I thought he gonna ask me to move, to line up on da other side. They renovated da place(looks wider). Two employees standing by da machine greet U with a smile. If U don't have an appointment letter they let U enter ur SS#. I only sat for a minute I was about to go to da restroom then they already called my number. I gave da paperwork they need. She made copies then I was done. When I got to my car da time was 9:04. Honestly, at this place isn' too bad. However, I do find that some of the representatives do not speak English very well or their knowledge and or command of the English language is severely lacking. Also, you are better off to take Uber or lyt to this location don't hassle trying to find parking. read more
