Why is it when 90% of the time that you come into the IRS office to try to resolve an issue? You are greeted by an employee that seems to be unhappy at their job and then it reflects on their customer service. It's very irritating when you're trying to explain the situation and you're just cut off and the young man helping you can't even look you in the eye when speaking to you. I can count on one hand, the times that I have had a positive experience with an IRS employee that has amazing customer service. Funny to leave a rating for anything related to the IRS, but I just couldn't help but to demystify what an engagement with this DTSJ office would look like. Only real negative was the 1:1 experience I had with a gentleman in cubicle #5 (Issac with curly hair and bright colored tattoos on both arms) as he was incredibly cold, impersonal, and did not put out a single smile the entire 15 minutes I sat in front of his desk. I know when people project that type of energy -- it has nothing to do with you but whatever they're dealing with as an individual so I'm not taking it personal. Just thought I should share that there is a common denominator of all IRS employees being disgruntled, and that they may very likely compete to see who can be the most disconnected from serving the people. Pro tip: make an appointment via the IRS appointment line @ (844) 545-5640. It will save you so much headache and heartache. When I first walked in, there was a nice armed security card who screened my bag and my person with a metal detector. Lobby was already filled at 8:30am with about 15 people waiting in chairs dated from the 90s. Typical government building with pale gray walls and security cameras plastered all over the ceilings. Outdated carpets and cubicles from the 1980s -- depressing interior design and decor for sure. It's structured like the DMV as those with appointments or otherwise will receive a number in which you can watch on wall for your turn. Not sure if this office provides full services but I only stopped by to make a payment. For payments, this office only accepts checks or money orders -- no cash, or card (dang it because I could have scored tons of miles!). Had an 8:30am appointment and was out by roughly 10:00am. Go figure. Final pro tip: park on Post street along metered parking, and you will be directly across the street from the building. read more

I made an appointment because I did not know why my deceased relatives taxes were not processed after months of waiting for a refund. I had to wait several weeks to get in, and as soon as we sat down, the woman helping us told me that the taxes were never filed at all. I mailed them in and did everything on TurboTax. I thankfully had a copy of the taxes and I gave them to her to file for me. I told her to look to see if I did everything correctly since I wasn't sure what happened to the taxes I mailed in (if lost or done incorrectly and tossed out?) She said it looked good and she sent the taxes in with a stamp on them. It has been over a month and the taxes were returned back to me! They state I did not sign the 1040, which I clearly did. They said I needed proof of income 1099. Why wasn't this caught while I was at the IRS office? That was the whole point of me going in there. I can't afford a tax person, so that is why I did TurboTax at home and paid for the software. Between this office and the IRS folks that thought I didn't sign the form, there are too many mistakes that are costing me time and money! The next day I only had to wait 10 minutes before I saw a clerk. He was helpful and he was able to give me the forms I needed. It was a pleasant experience and I know what I need to do the next time. You can usually get an appointment for the next day. The San jose office is downtown on a quiet side street (Post & Market). Next closest offices are SF and Walnut Creek. Be smart and set low expectations for the IRS's Face to Face visit. Hours are Monday-Friday - 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. With appointments scheduled for 30 minute increments. If you have several questions ask for a 45 minute appointment. When you arrive for your appointment there are a couple of nearby garages. Expect to pay $1 every 20 minutes for parking garages. Street parking is $2 for 1 hour with the nearby meters limited to 1 hour. ParkSJ.org has maps and an app if you don't carry change. Be prepared to wait over an hour for your scheduled 30 minute slot. I ended up with a $40 parking ticket because the meter maxes out at 1 hour and to leave and top off the meter means re-clearing crazy contracted security run by an old Asian man who is paranoid of the security cameras "watching" him. Expect your security check to take 10 minutes and DO NOT INITIATE a conversation. After you clear the TSA security check you have to wait in the last row of seats to get your "ice cream" ticket from the cranky lady at the cubicle desk. As each person is called they expect you to move "up" a seat. She isn't very efficient so expect that to take another 10 minutes. If she doesn't find your appointment she CAN'T book you one. You need to use your phone to schedule one, but you CAN'T make phone calls in their office so you have to head outside make the call and come back when your appointment is and reclear security and the appointment lady. Once you have your 3 digit ticket number you need to sit in a different row of seats (not the last row). Security guard walks around and looks to see if you have your ticket. You then wait for your number to come up - usually an hour and then proceed to the cubicle number with a funky sliding door that is supposed to give you privacy, but everyone can hear you! You'll then get your face to face meeting with a hostile IRS employee that in my case couldn't give eye contact. The process for getting a transcript of previous tax years took 20 minutes. If you need something from 10 years ago it is a $50 fee and you have to file & mail a form. If you file jointly and your partner isn't with you you'll need them to come in separately to get their tax history transcript. If you have any other questions they'll refer you to their phone number (which will refer you to make an appointment) and you get the crazy circle that is the IRS. Watch the 1985 movie Brazil to get an idea of how broken this is. If you ask more than 2 questions you get asked to book another appointment. While I was there the entire show was interrupted by an active shooter lockdown exercise. Not kidding. Another 20 minutes WASTED. Please Google Andrew Yang and look up his policy on how he would structure the IRS. Clearly what we have here is BROKEN. It is the worst combination of the DMV meets TSA meets incompetence. On the way out be sure to take a nice long look at Trump and Pence's photos on the wall and remind yourself how Trump doesn't pay his taxes and your money is supposed to patch his $1 Trillion dollar deficit this year. I have been complimented on several occasions by people of all ages on how patient I am. Yes, I am being cocky. Yes, i think it's okay for people to toot their own horn from time-to-time. I was put in the gauntlet of testing an individuals patience when I was directed by my tax writer to get in contact with the IRS. Pull up a chair, light a cigar and pour yourself a top shelf whiskey boys and girls, this one is going to be an adult rated (still within reason of Yelp's review guidelines of course!) review. This one requires a little background on my personal situation. I won't get into the nitty gritty, but to sum it up, my wife required getting what is called an ITIN so that I can claim her as a dependent on my taxes. Let's start with the randomized hotline that is the Internal Revenue Service for the United States of America. You can call at random times of the day, and it will prompt you in saying "Unfortunately we are overwhelmed and you need to try again tomorrow". I would call several times a day and not give up, and would eventually get connected to a person. It would easily be 10 times in a day of me trying till i finally connected. The average hold time prior to speaking to someone would be 30 minutes to 1 hour minimum (remember this); sometimes longer. Eventually I get connected to someone, and they cannot help me in looking up the status of this ITIN. They would play hot potato with me and transfer me around the different departments.; all while waiting on hold for a minimum of 30 minutes to an hour mind you. Sometimes, transferring me to the incorrect department after again, 30 minutes to 1 hour of waiting only to be transferred again and to wait another 30 minutes to 1 hour. It's comedic at some point. A federal office that can't transfer correctly within. I talked to departments that include, Legal, Fraud, Appointments, and the ITIN help desk to name a few. Eventually I get to making an appointment, and can go to the IRS office in person!!! This is where it gets even better boys and girls. Once at the office, you are asked if you have an appointment, and checked for explosives and firearms. Eventually, you are seated in a discount DMV like waiting area to be summoned by 1 of 2 clerks helping all of the San Jose Bay Area in person. Once you're done with the waiting in person game, then you are tested on tenacity of social skills with people that want to do nothing to help you. We presented the people with copies of everything only to be told to re-apply and wait another 7 weeks for a possible completion. People work at an snails pace here. Their is no urgency. The word "With Haste" is unheard of here. People do not walk in the IRS, they shuffle slowly. Overall; I lost all hope for anything federal to want to help us with status changes and ITIN applications. I am now applying for an extension for the first time in my life all because of the absolute lack of caring and ability to pay attention to forms. If you have several hours in your day and want 0 results along with truly testing your patience, the IRS will check all these boxes, I promise you. I have been trying for 5 months to just "Schedule" an appointment to review a discrepancy on my tax return. Using both the local San Jose office and the national IRS support phone numbers and internet websites are futile, automated, and always disconnect you and tell you to try again later. They refuse to allow appointments to be made, or speak to a live person. Before COVID hit, their service was a little combersome at times, but generally acceptable and helpful in all areas of federal tax related issues. Just like all the other reviews every thing I read is true. My self & a few others had got there in line around 2:30pm then got. Ticket to wait. I spent 2 & half hours waiting with a ticket, & spend $16 for parking, plus gas & a few of us who was there before closing & even some of the last couple of people who came before me also got kicked out. Why? because they was closed & they said due to budget cuts they ain't staying over time. There was only a couple of us there & I understand some services take longer than others so I asked how long a transcript print out would take? The lady by the counter said a few mins they there was an awkward pause as I gazed in her eyes with a look of "Have kindness in your heart" when there was only me & another gentleman there left standing. Really? Seriously? I went on Friday 2/14/2020 around 2 to get a form for my parents and was given a number to be seen, mind you, I did not have an appointment. When I saw the IRS agent he stated I needed to come with my dad or get a form on line stating I can get the form we needed. So I took the afternoon off today 2/18 and went with my dad back to the IRS. After sitting there for about 30 minutes they finally called us to to see what we needed and when I told her she said, "we are an appointment only office". I let her know I was frustrated because I wasn't informed of that on Friday and I didn't have an appointment on Friday, yet I was seen. She had no explanation for her except to apologise. Starting Jan 11, 2016, No more walk-in allowed in Sanjose IRS. They serve only based on appointment. I was sent back since i did not have an appointment. Make sure you call them and book your appointment before you go. Take the parking ticket with you, and while returning, pay before going back to your car as pay machines are available only in the first floor. read more

IRS Sanjose Office, CA. 08Mar16. We visited IRS Sanjose office to file ITIN and sumbit Tax papers. IRS Sanjose office entry is now strictly by appointment so take an appointment on phone prior to your visit. I parked in nearest parking VTA Michelle lot ($1/20 mnts) which is just 2-3 minutes' walk from IRS office. Office opens up at 8.30 am and we were there at 8 am. At around 8.20 am an officer came out to remind people outside that entry will not be allowed without an appointment. I had first appointment of 8.30 am (with 2 more people having same appointment time in the queue outside) At sharp 8.30 we were allowed to get inside the building and were asked to stand in a queue where a security guard checked backpacks and sent me directly to the reception to collect the token. Since I was the first person in queue, my token no. was immediately called upon and I headed to to the cabin of IRS officer where I submitted all tax papers at around 8.35 am. After reviewing for a bit, He asked me to fill up a form for basic details (like Name/SSN/Sign etc) and asked to wait in the waiting area for a few minutes. In case you go with kids, they also have some toys in waiting area and a rest room. We were called back in 15 minutes and he gave us a type of a receipt of my tax papers and explained the timing etc to process these docs by IRS. We were done by 8.55 am so in just 25 minutes we were out of the building ! Had a Smooth experience contrary to what I heard earlier, seems all this due to strict appointment system put in place this year & me being the first person in the queue, so best is to get the first appointment. AVOID THIS PLACE. This is by far my worst experience in the US. Come at 9:30 AM and they close the line stating they are already full. And once you are in, you can see that there are hardly one or two counters open and hundreds of people waiting to be attended. I came to this office to apply for TIN at 825. 5 min before they open and my turn came at 1230 pm. Its a big office and only 2 people to serve everyone. Its not a children friendly place, they can't eat or drink inside. But no lobby. They can't make noise or cry. You gotta take them out where you can't see the screen where your turn appears, nor u can hear it. Its a nightmare that I have to come again here. One more time I get late to work so late, I won't have a W2 next year. Such a waste of time. read more

I visited the office twice to resolve a problem created by the IRS. My first visit was an unfriendly experience because they do not acknowledge drop-ins as humans and send you away, even when you tried online or by phone to no avail. Barely anyone spoke English. Minus nearly 2 stars for the horrible experience. But on the second visit, after finally succeeding in setting up an appointment by phone (5 calls, long wait), I was received by a polite and courteous office - with no one ahead of me in line and a quiet office. I was assisted by a native-speaking Mr. Fields who was articulate, soft-spoken, and respectful- hence the stars. I was initially uptight, having to visit twice, but he was a serious relief. i was in and out in less than 20 minutes-wow! But franky, I hope I never, ever have to go there again. read more

Even though it's not peak tax season, I could see that some of the worst reviews were at off-peak times. Happily, the office was nearly empty - only a very short line - and within 15 minutes we were sitting with the adviser, Ronnie, who was a great representative of the IRS. I called IRS to set a schedule for my son to get a document that he needed for school. IRS set us for an appointment with IRS office in Stockton, CA. So, I request off from my work, and we drove for an hour. We got there 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled appointment. There were three different offices occupied by IRS which I knocked but with no avail. 45 minutes later, an employee came out and I notified him about our appointment, and he said that's a different department, and I told him that no one is answering the door, so he said he'll check it. After a couple of minutes, he came back just to say that the employee in charge of the appointment did not show up, so I asked him if there's a way he can help my son to get the requirements he needed for school, and amazingly he said NO, he doesn't know how to process our request; and this guy supposed to be the manager of one of the department of the IRS. This is unacceptable, IRS are so quick taking people's tax money, but so poor in customer service. IRS is a big disappointment knowing you're a government entity. I'm sorry to say but IRS is fubar! You need to fix your s*#t IRS, shame on you. You don't deserve even a single star. read more

I have never met a business as good as the IRS. Where to start? First, I am a novice tax preparer, just filed my taxes and this business provided me free tax forms for me to print out and fill out. I turned it in and the IRS quickly followed up with me with an audit. Thats so great, this business is looking out for me and checked my work to see if everything was correct. I came over there and waited in their fabulous lobby for at least two hours. I appreciated the silence and quiet, it gave me time to think about my case. After I was told I would pay penalties and fees, I told them I had no money and they said they would work with me. They gave me a slow payment system that works by garnishment where they talk to my employer and take a little bit of my money each paycheck. Never have I worked with such a fine and reasonable business. read more

I did not visit the office, but I received a visit from a revenue officer. I work in an apartment building, and John G. Johnston was looking for someone he believes lives or lived there. If you know anything about property management, you would know we cannot release ANY information about past or current residents without a warrent. I am pretty sure he knows this as well. I told him I am legally not able to give him any information without a warrent. He got upset very quickly, and in an attempt to intimidate me, and said in a very threatening tone "I will get a summons, then you will HAVE to go all the way to our office in San Jose!" I just shrugged and told him "once you do that, I will be happy to tell you what you want..." He huffed and got a business card and grumbled out the door. LOL! read more

This review is specifically for the IRS office in San Jose, CA. To get an ITIN, you must visit the IRS office with your spouse and with identification. They do not have an appointment system. If you have your tax return prepared, the whole process should take less than 10-15 mintues. We went in April and are somewhat at fault for not getting it over with earlier. The first time we went, the guy asked us to come back in the morning at 7am. We decided to go against his suggestion and instead show up around 12pm for a second time. Again, the front desk clerk said the same thing - come back at 7am. The third time, we got there at 6.45am and there were 15 people waiting ahead of us. By the time the office opened at 8.30am, there were at least a hundred people in line. They stopped handing out ticket numbers by 10am (the ticket numbers are their way of serving people in order and are not sequential). Fortunately, the IRS official who processed our tax return was very professional. The employees there generally appear rude because they have to deal with a variety of people, some of whom can be ridiculous. To avoid the inconveniences, get your tax return done early if you need to visit this office. read more

I hate this place. I hate it, I hate it. They seriously lack workers and the workers they have working seem to take a 15 min break after helping each person. I came to just have my tax transcript printed out and my wait time is 2 hrs plus. For me a lady poked out her head and called out 853, no one showed, and she had went back to her office. I went by the front and asked since no one showed up for 853 I'm the next number at 854, they said sit down and my number will be called on the monitor. They haven't called any number in the 800s. And it passed more than 30 mins and they still didn't call my number. This just proves that the gov't doesn't give 2 f*cks about us.
