It basically took me two days of calling to get this appointment .Once I got there, the guards were extremely rude asked me over and over again if I had an appointment. They asked me what the appointment was for they said well, we can't help you and we don't know why you're here. They wanted me out of there ASAP! I began to tell them that I spoke to someone on the phone and they were the ones who gave me the appointment for today! Anybody knows that you can't walk into the Social Security office and you have to make an appointment! I don't know why they think they're above the law. They're just rude. And they need to get over it. I would give this place a zero star, but that's not a choice. It wasn't until I got to the back and spoke to someone and he made me feel better. I called the main Social Security phone number and was told that the earliest appointment for us was late January 2026, but that we could drop off paperwork to the physical office. We stopped in last week and the office wasn't as busy as we remembered during prior visits. The guard told us that we could drop off our packet in the box and they'd get to it sometime in the future. It's disappointing that we can't walk in and wait to meet with a live person anymore. Street parking was readily available in front of the office. read more

The good: I came to get a SSN for my nanny and it was a really painless and simple process. I did paperwork online ahead of time and came in to the office afterward. I expected it to be confusing with grumpy workers the way the DMV tends to be. We were in and out in under an hour. The security guards were pretty funny. There was plenty of seating inside. The bad: It was confusing how they were calling only one letter but I had a different letter than everyone else. Then a lady told me that the security guard told her that if you don't get called within an hour then you can go ask them what's up. Arrived about 8:30 am today, Tuesday, the week of Thanksgiving. One outside security guard had to sole job to direct people to park only on the street. While there were ample open parking spaces around the building, none of it is for SS office. Who knew? No outside line, and security officer directed me to electronic sign in screen--took less than 30 seconds to sign in and get a paper number. Assistant office supervisor Scott (Miller?) came up to the front after about 15 minutes to announce that starting yesterday, they no longer take walk-ins, but "we're going the way of the DMV and honoring only scheduled appointments" which can be made via the online portal, or phone (800) 772-1213. Anyone walking in would be assisted to make an appointment for another time. He explained a few scenarios of why we would need to be seen in person, but offered that online is usually best for most needs. He and the security guards outside and inside were respectful and kind. Scott offered to answer any questions if we would patiently wait for him to "go down the line" to raised hands, and his did. All in all, what we were prepared to endure as a long wait with disgruntled employees didn't go that way--it was lovely. Really. Just sorry this security guard I have read about was not feeling well today, so we missed the entertainment. read more

Absolutely horrendous experience coming here today. My significant other and I waited patiently for our turn, arriving early and having a good day up to our visit. When we were called up to window 7 (between the times of 2-2:30), we had a woman (who claimed that she's been working there for "20" years), immediately questions why my significant other was doing the talking for me (it's because I've been in pain for a while and he's been kind enough to help me with my important information), so he decided to come and help me out. Then, I'm not joking, she stands up from her chair, gets her face right up to the glass, hands on desk and elbows out, pulls down her mask, and continues to berate us by being unnecessarily condescending towards the few questions we asked. We could barely get a word in edge wise due to her not being able to calm down and stay silent long enough for us to speak. Eventually, for some strange reason, she got up and left, only to come back with another coworker to "back her up" on what she was telling us...as if we didn't hear her the first dozen times of her repeating herself. Again, unnecessary. All my partner did was ask basic questions with calmness and understanding, but she must have been on a power trip. Some individuals are simply NOT professional enough to be working with the public, and that woman was a perfect example of it. Got married in November. Got my marriage certificate in December. Went online to change my name, but it said I had to do it in person. Online it said everywhere was closed due to Covid, but I called the Torrance office. Called 3 weeks ago to get an appointment. I'm off Fridays, so I wanted a Friday appointment. They had appointments available 2 weeks out, so it wasn't too bad. Came today at 10:02 for my 10:00 appointment. I was a bit late because the spot where Apple Maps took me was around the corner, so I had to walk. I stood in line because I thought everyone in line had an appointment. Nope. Anyways, the security guard finally let me in at 10:15, and I sat down to wait for which window I was going to. Got to a window at 10:20. Gave all my paperwork and showed my ID. I was out in 5 mins. Quick and easy with an appointment. I would recommend ONLY if you have an appointment. If you don't, the security guard will turn you away. He was entertaining to listen to when he shooed people away and told them to call the number on the door lol read more

What a crappy way to run a business, even if it is a government business. The level of disdain of the reps for us (their customers) is so obvious. The new process is when you walk in (don't even try to call SSA as it's usually more than 120 mins long wait on hold to even talk to someone), you sign it a kiosk and then begin the wait for your number to be called. Make sure you phone is charged or bring a book to make the wait tolerable. Once your number is finally called (on a typical busy day it's at least an hour or likely two hours) you are directed to a cubicle to deal with a SSA rep. But the minute you ask a question, the rep will tell you that you'll need an appointment to get that question answered. Wait. What? The rep is sitting across from you but now they want to schedule an appointment for a later date so your question to be answered. Most ridiculous, inefficient and unhelpful process. So try to avoid having any issues with SSA, your life will be better. BTW: the security guards are super nice, friendly and helpful. read more

Very smooth experience here. I got in line at 8:45 outside with ~20 people ahead of me. They open doors at 9:00 and funneled everyone in to grab a ticket. I was helped within about 30 minutes to change a name, unfortunately I did not have the original marriage license so had to go home and find it. Thankfully I live close by, found it, and got back in line with a new ticket at 10:05. I was helped and out the door by 10:50. The security guards at the front are very friendly and helpful, and the staff member who helped me both times was very helpful and nice as well! Street parking only. They do call your number out of order based on whatever you're coming in for. Helpful tip for people who just got married - purchase the newlynamed package, as this provides you with the necessary documentation/steps to change your name efficiently. We visited this office a month ago. The elderly Filipino man with glasses who works here told us to come back for our appointment at 11:30am today. We did and it turns out, it was a phone appointment at 11:30am - a call we never received. The woman who was supposed to call us gave us an attitude because we were annoyed that THEIR worker gave us the wrong information. Completely incompetent. Accompanied hubs to the Mariner location. Due to Covid 19, it's best to set yourself up for an appointment. Come a few minutes earlier though as street parking may be a bit of a challenge. Don't park on those offices nearby or you'll be towed. There maybe a line of people waiting but if you are there on your appointed time, then the friendly guard will let you in. Social distancing and Covid 19 precautions are practiced inside. The experience of waiting and getting your business done was quick and in my opinion way better than it was pre-pandemic! read more

My name is C. Cooper: I am 81 years old. In THEN "good faith", I went to Torrance SSA yesterday = 7/17/24. I am literally APPALLED at the bs I received and TINDURED from 9:45 a.m. until 1:50 pm = 4 1/2 HOURS!!!! NOTE: I HAD a predetermined appointment per SSA agent William with "Mr. Phillips" at 10:00 a.m., per his phone directions.. This did NOT HAPPEN!!! He instructed me to have a seat in the "waiting for service" area for assistance: I WAITED from 9:45 a.m. until 1:50 p.m., when William said he was going to the agent in "station 7"...He did NOT return to inform me that he was AT LUNCH; hence, deceiving me, again! I finally asked, then DEMANDED to see the supervisor! She proved to be VERY NOT CARING re what had become my PLIGHT...When I frustratingly and emotionally related my ORDEAL experience and expressed my chagrin, she LITERALLY ORDERED me OUT, rather than helping me!!!! William (whom I complimented for his attempted help, in her presence) then suggested that I call AGAIN the next day = TODAY... I did so, waiting per recorded instructions, only to repeatedly hear them OVER and OVER!!! with NO AGENT HELP!!! I just reviewed service feed-back comments from others: the MAJORITY expressed frustrating experiences, some NEVER getting NEEDED assistance, as I did yesterday! The reason for my visit was because during the lockdown someone working from home wasn't actually doing any work from home, so my name change never happened. That being said, the in-person experience was the least painful I have ever had at a social security office. Seriously, the two security guards need to take their show in the road. They were hilarious and entertaining and handled all of the unpleasant things like the lady that freaked every time a new number came on the board that wasn't her or the other lady that tried to fight everyone.
