Right next door to ice cream place which apparently is a HUGE DEAL!

5 stars Social Stays - Luxury Hostel | Santa Barbara, CA https://book.thesocialstay.com Safe, cozy, and CLEAN--exactly what I needed after a 16-hour shift! I'm a traveling respiratory therapist, and this place was a total lifesaver. The setup includes open cubicles and shared bathrooms, but it's right in the middle of everything, which made it super convenient. They're strict about quiet hours and lights out at 10 p.m.--which was perfect for someone like me who just needed real rest. Guests were respectful, and my favorite part? They were constantly cleaning, which gave me so much peace of mind. Bring headphones if you're a light sleeper, but overall, Social Stays is a budget-friendly gem for a good night's rest in Santa Barbara.

It is not, however, somewhere I would personally recommend unless you are mainly looking for a place to crash. We booked a room over the phone the same day we arrived and were happy to receive a discount, which brought the total to just over $300 after fees. Having been away from Santa Barbara for many years, we were excited to have a restful and celebratory evening and trusted the internet's recommendation of this place. The service was nice enough when we arrived, but the lack of amenities and the quality of the bed and pillows were a real letdown. I wish I had called the other hotels nearby to ask about their rates before committing, but we were on a road trip and didn't have the patience. Our room was modern and clean, but it faced and was right above aneighboring parking lot, and that combined with the street noise, was not especially conducive to rest. The AC unit also made a remarkable amount of noise. It did not bother me too much, but for light sleepers it could be a challenge. The best parts were the exterior, which feels very Santa Barbara, the free parking, and the complimentary pastries at breakfast. That said, there are several inns and hotels around the same rate, or sometimes only $50-$80 more after fees and parking, that offer on-property bars, restaurants, pools, and amenities I had assumed were fairly standard at a $300-a-night inn or hotel, including things as simple as Q-tips and comfortable pillows, and bathroom doors which actually insulate your private moments from the rest of the room. We should have done more research beforehand and noticed that this place did not have a pool or any facilities beyond a vending machine. However, it appeared in online results alongside full-service hotels rather than motels, so I expected a little more. My primary complaint is the bed and pillows. The pillows were barely more than bags filled with an extremely lightweight, shapeless foam material, and the mattress sank so deeply that the bed felt more like a nice pull-out couch than a proper hotel bed. The pillows reminded me of what I bought at Target for $11 before moving into my college dorm room. Fine in a motel for $150/ night, disappointing for twice that. The free parking seems to be a major draw, and it is certainly convenient, but I would still encourage people to explore other options if they have an extra $50-$80 to spend and care about the quality of the room where they spend the night. With one exception, the nearest restaurants and bars are about a 10-15-minute walk away. State Street is at least a 12-minute, 0.6-mile walk, while many other inns and hotels in the area have bars and food on the property or immediately nearby. The beach is technically one block away, although this property is toward the far end of it rather than near the main activity. We ended up ubering from state street back to the hotel. I think that if you are traveling with children, do not need many hotel amenities, or are really just looking for somewhere clean and convenient to sleep, this is a perfectly fine spot. I also should have done more research beforehand, and I cannot blame the property for amenities it never claimed to offer. Still, I do think its surprisingly glowing online reputation creates expectations that the actual experience does not truly meet. In my opinion i would describe this place as a nice, well-kept two-star inn /motel, and if that is what you are looking for, it could be a lovely choice. Many other guests were happy and that is certainly worth something.

This was a great option to stay a few nights in Santa Barbara!…read more The location is right off of State Street, so everything is pretty much walking distance. The rooms are nice with comfy beds and large bathrooms. You can kind of tell that it used to be kind of a crappy motel and then someone with good taste remodeled and redesigned it to be much cuter (some of the photos in reviews look outdated and different from the cleaner and more modern experience we had). I usually don't stay in motels, but would consider this more on par with an inn or bed and breakfast due to cleanliness and the updates they've made. Everything was very seamless and clean. The sheets and towels were replaced daily and the staff at the desk was always available and very helpful. I booked via Booking.com and had no issue with my reservation and was able to easily communicate with the staff before and during my stay. Unfortunately I went during a busier time so they were unable to give us early check in or late check out, but everything was seamless otherwise. Would highly recommend staying here to anyone looking to spend time in Santa Barbara on a budget!

The walls are paper-thin so we were treated (exposed?) to the sounds of the couple next door having sex. We could tell that gal's day was off to a really great start! The controls for the heat and the A/C are really unusual, so they have to provide instructions on how to use them. They did so by handing me a folded sheet of white paper, but they did not say what it was. Only that it had some information about the hotel. The place is really run down with many broken features. They had two blow driers in the bathroom, one of which was broken. A broken soap dispenser in the shower, and the deadbolt of the door was also broken. They didn't even provide a plastic cup to get a drink of water. What an incredibly low-end cost cutting measure! Loaner bicycles are available, but five out of six had flat tires. Their online presence is very deceiving. I would not recommend the place.

I opted for the Penthouse room as it was a special occasion and it was totally worth the cost. The room was unbelievable and exactly as pictured with a living room, kitchen, private balcony overlooking State Street, two bathrooms and a lounge area with a firepit. The firepit was easy to operate and so cozy to sit around with a glass of wine. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and helpful, even with no official concierge. They even had champagne in the room for me upon arrival, which was a nice and thoughtful touch. Caveat (not a total con): You do have to park in a paid lot about a block away but you can load in/out in the lot behind the hotel. She was prompt, nice, sweet, kind and quick. She checked us in and gave us 2 room cards and told us where our room is located. It has 2 adjacent buildings, 21 rooms, and each room had its own parking space. Our room was #210. We walked in and liked everything about it. Amenities included: 2 queen size beds, nice size TV, small closet space, mini fridge, microwave, lots of drawers, shower, iron, hair dryer, the desk, coffee maker along with sugar, creamer etc... Room was very clean, beds were very comfortable, and so were the pillows. Sheets were crisp, clean along with the towels in the bathroom. It had a cute window and a chair right next to it. From outside. Overall was a quiet Inn. The reason for giving 4 stars is because of different things. 1, the bathroom door was making a squeaky sound when opening it, 2. There was no complimentary breakfast, didn't accept my AAA card, and 3. For 2 nights it was $292.25 including tax. For that price, we could have booked a room in a more upscale hotel. However, it was convenient and close to major restaurants, and shops. Also close to the freeway. I will stay there again if I happen to be in Santa Barbara.

First time in Santa Barbara!!!…read more This weekend was my wife's 40th birthday and to celebrate, we wanted to get out of town for the weekend and visit somewhere neither of us had ever been. In enters the idea of Santa Barbara. First thing we noticed when looking into hotels was everything was very expensive. I think this was exacerbated by graduation weekend and being a holiday weekend. We settled on Inn by the Harbor after looking at other options and it seemed small and quaint but like a beautiful property and it affords its guests with free parking. Traffic coming up from San Diego was atrocious from the moment we reached LA, but after five and a half hours we made it! It felt good to get out and stretch and we made our way to the lobby. The front of the resort is small but beautiful and has a very Spanish appearance. It was very green and beautiful as well as being centrally located being close to the harbor and the funk zone. We were greeted by Sam who got us checked in quickly, gave us a rundown of the town and even offered us complimentary beverages after he saw that it was my wife's birthday. Sam was very friendly and made us feel very welcome. We made our way to the room on the inner portion of the complex and the greenery was very welcoming as we approached the door to our room. The room was small, but furnished nicely, had plenty of storage space, a TV, microwave, AC and a small area near the bathroom where my wife could get ready. There were windows on the front and rear of the room which allowed plenty of natural light which was also nice. The maids were also very friendly when we'd say hello as we were coming and going. We were very comfortable during our stay and it appears they take good care of the complex and the rooms. Although we didn't partake, I also appreciate the fact that they have complimentary breakfast as well as a wine and cheese happy hour in the afternoon. Checkout time was 11am which was plenty and it was nice not having to call for a late checkout. As previously mentioned, this was our first trip up to Santa Barbara but if we find ourselves up here again, I would have no question on where to stay. It's a nice inn and was only a 10-15 minute walk to wherever we wanted to go.
