Passing through on a slow Sunday morning, I stopped in for breakfast. The sign outside says…read more"Monday-Saturday" but they are open on Sundays too-at least they were when I came by. Huzzah! I found the ambience a little odd-no music and just an eerie feel to it. Maybe that's because I was sitting next to the kitchen and only heard the soft buzzing of a machine. Some old country music could have livened the place up a bit. There was a Christmas tree decorated in patriotic colors with a cowboy hat on top. The food was....ok. Not a ton of flavor. Service was friendly enough, but not overly welcoming. Maybe if you're a regular from the small town, you have a different experience. But just passing through, it was just ok.

If you are a Utah who likes sugar you might honestly enjoy your experience. But we are from out of town, and don't have that Utahn sweet tooth, so we were shocked by how sweet the spiced iced chai latte (2/5 stars) was. I honestly could only taste the sugar, although I could see the texture of the spiced chai. We also got a caramel iced coffee (3/5 stars) which was palatable to us, but twice the price and not as good as the coffee at Mavericks. But the staff were friendly and I think they're doing a good job with their target clientele, so I'll give them 3/5 stars overall. We would recommend this coffee shop if you're looking to sit and relax and enjoy the ambience, or if you have a sweet tooth. If you're in a rush, try the self-serve coffee at Mavericks across the street.

All of those things mixed together and twisted and pulled into a sweet singular strand of small town taffy. We bellied up to the bar later than we had hoped, in mid-afternoon. We met the current manager who explained the history of the spot, and while it's a little spotty, they've been around a long time in one form or another. She was related somehow to the original owner and it's passed through generations of families. There are strange gifts, new gifts, a lunch counter, booths, and a small menu board. We came in post-hike and got burgers because of course you get burgers. I can sum up the vibe of the food and the whole experience thusly: ME: "Wow, this tomato looks like it came from the garden." HER: "Ya, we get them from a guy who grows them for us. He's actually my old history teacher." Local, small, quirky, but very very delicious. Simple. I'm off shakes but by dining partner got one and it filled the cavity well. You have to stop in here when in Roosevelt. It's small town history teacher tomato good.

Happiness Within is one of those coffee shops that makes you walk in and immediately think, "Wel,…read moreII guess I live here now." The place has a whole mood. Warm brick walls, dark wood floors, cozy little seating areas, a fireplace, even a chess board if you're feeling intellectual before the caffeine kicks in. It feels less like a coffee shop and more like somebody's ridiculously cool living room. Walk all the way to the back and you'll find the coffee counter along with a display case of cookies, pastries, and other little bites that will absolutely start negotiating with your willpower. What I really liked is that you can choose your own little corner depending on your mood. Sit by the fireplace, grab a chair and linger, play chess, catch up with a friend, or hide in a cozy spot with your coffee and pretend you have nowhere else to be. Happiness Within has character, warmth, and just the right amount of funky. The barista clearly knows everybody who walks in, which tells you everything. This isn't just a coffee shop, it's where the community gathers. I'm only passing through Helper, but this place makes me think if you moved here, you'd probably be a local by next Tuesday. Love this place. Coffee with personality and a side of small-town charm.
