Felt sorry for all the people down the road waiting in a drive thru when this family run gem was a 1/2 mile away. I walked in and was greeted by a smile and a welcome and I saw the place was mostly full of locals and construction workers. The workers could have gone anywhere and chose Sofia's and I'm glad I pulled in when I saw the trucks outside. Nothing fancy, great chips and salsa with everything cooked to order. Wish I could learn how to cook refried beans as well as the portion I was served here with my tacos. Don't miss this gem and don't be impatient it's worth the wait. read more

Very disappointed. Staff is nice. The salsa is excellent, but food NOTHING like it use to be. They use to have good fish tacos and chile relleno. Fish is now like dollars store value pack quality with dried out bread center. Got two things to take home like I use to. The relleno is made in a way I've never seen - it's a pepper with egg on the outside, no cheese on the inside and a marinara type topping with no flavor. My friend and I both had delicious burritos. I had the fully loaded ground beef burrito and she asked for a vegan burrito filled with beans, guac, rice, and pico de gallo and the young lady was extremely accommodating to her on-the-spot custom request. I disagree with some of the other reviews for this small restaurant. I have found that the very best, truly authentic, Mexican food is in little, out of the way places. We winter in Mesa and have found no Mexican places truly to our taste. We summer in Colorado. Sophia's is wonderful. Nice,dark red, rich enchilada sauce and tasty beans and rice. Good, old fashioned Mexican dishes. None of this fancy stuff in the big cities. I just wish it were closer. I'd eat there once a week! read more

Love, love, love Sophia's!! Our favorite burritos to order when on the road are their bean and cheese burritos but all their food is delicious, and it's an easy stop on the way to Yuma or San Diego. If you are driving from Phoenix to California or the other way, this is a great stop. You cannot be in a hurry but in the mornings, they do make up a bunch of burritos for grab and go if that's what you're seeking. Service is good but not fast. Ask questions about the menu so that you don't have any surprises - for example, the sauce on their huevos rancheros is different that I expected. I liked it but should have asked about it in advance and probably would have ordered differently. Their chips and salsa are great and they put them down even at breakfast. The food is very good and you will receive plenty of it. It is a favorite with locals and travelers alike. read more

Omg amazing authentic home style Mexican food. Portions were huge. I got a chimichanga that was the biggest I have ever had. They also sell churrros. We found this place the old fashioned way - by getting off the highway at lunch time and looking for the restaurant with the most cars parked in front. Bingo. Nothing fancy here, just elegant simplicity. The red salsa was perfect. The beef tamale was moist, if in need of a little queso. The guacamole was a weak hit, but the the chile relleno my wife ordered was light and non-greasy. And the boring cheese enchilada she always orders at Mexican joints was a revelation: the cheese and the tortilla were quite good, but the meat-based red sauce that smothered it was both rich and mild. This was a wonderful find. The service is a but slow but it was very busy. They bring excellent salsa in a small Carafe along with warm chips. Driving through on our way to Tucson from San Diego and we were hangry for some Mexican food. Looked up a reputable place on Yelp and found this little gem. Don't judge a book by its cover, that's what I told myself...and my family as we pulled up in front of the restaurant. It's a little plain on the outside, but the inside is cute and inviting. We were greeted promptly with a big bowl of chips and salsa which were good. We weren't starving so we ordered on the light side, some cheese enchiladas, a bean and cheese burrito, and a quesadilla. The cheese enchiladas were a little on the salty side...but they were AWESOME! Cheese was melted all the way through and the sauce was tasty. Bean and cheese burrito was fine, what you would expect. I suggested my husband get it wet...with enchilada sauce and cheese on to but he opted for plain. And the quesadilla was huge, more than enough for my 12 year old son. Sit down service for 4 and we got out of there for under $20, not bad at all! Would definitely return to try some other items, the chimichanga was calling my name! There were big pluses to this little place. First of all, it was nice to see a small restaurant full at lunchtime with both locals and tourists. Next, it was one of the few times I got an absolutely clean menu in a Mexican restaurant -- yay! A nice touch was that our salsa came in a small carafe, which made it easy to pour the amount we wanted in our own salsa mini-bowl and also on our food. Reviews on the food are mixed. The enchiladas were very good, with all lean chicken or beef. I didn't care for the rice or for the beans. Too pasty. But my brother ate all of his AND mine. The tamale was super good. Wish I had taken some home. However, I was told I couldn't get a green sauce on it. (The answer might have been a lack of communication. After all, they had chili verde on the menu, so there was green sauce somewhere in that kitchen.) Overall, a pleasant lunch in a pleasant location. read more

Ahhh!! $10 breakfast for two!!!! We stopped here for breakfast when we passed through the town's visitor center and it was soo amazing! The place is bigger than expected and for what seemed to be the middle of nowhere, there sure was a decent amount of people in there. We both got breakfast burritos, mine with chorizo and hers being potato, since she cant eat pork and the only meat options seemed to be pork breakfast meat, which is understandable and I bet they would of made steak if asked. They had 3 different hot sauces on the table which I definitely enjoyed mixing and the salsa she brought out was just delightful, I even asked for chips just so I could keep eating the salsa. If I wasn't traveling I probably would of bought one to go just to have. As for the burritos, they were good, but needed a little more seasoning, and were quite filling and we only got the petites. I couldn't even imagine what the other ones would look like. The coffee was pretty good as well. Hands down to this tiny restaurant. The salsa that comes with the chips was the first thing that was noticeably delicious! The rice and beans and salsa are usually key indicators of good Mexican food. I had the shredded beef tostada ( no photo) I devoured it before I thought about a pix. Lol!! My sister had the sopes plate and one enchilada and omg! I got to taste it all! Authentic Horchata was delicious! I'm not a big fan of any enchiladas because I make my own but it was pretty tasty. Sofia's is one of those things that you cant judge from the outside. It looks ratty and run down on the outside, and on the inside, it looks quite the same. However, the dissonance between how it looked and how the food was emerged as soon as the chips and salsa were brought out. Good Mexican places almost always have good chips and salsa. Sofias was no exception. After the chips of which we had about eight bowls, we were given the tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and everything else good and tasty. The food was well made and had great flavor, and the place is small enough that it is pretty quiet and the waitress didn't have to run around to ten different tables.
