The biggest reason to stop here are the pleasant proprietors. They were kind and generous. I found the food unremarkable but I probably asked for the wrong dish. After i ordered the 3 tables around me all asked for some quacamole dish and sounded very disappointed when told they were out. With a name like Sofia's you would think it would be good. Soooooo. Wrong. Had combo #4,2 tacos 1 tamale rice and beans. First tacos asada very dry with little flavor, tamale was even drier. This is a sad statement but the rice was the highlight of the meal. $14 buck I understand as is in Gila bend. I paid & left for Phoenix, wasn't sure if food was going to make it. In 2009, Sofia's was where we had our first date. I can't remember which of us picked it but it was just right for authentic fare and lingering while getting to know a little about each other. I came to work in Gila Bend for a couple of months and Being that its the only Mexican restaurant in town, I was very excited to go there. I was craving some flautas and went there for some. I placed the order to go and couldnt wait to get to my room and gooble down the flautas w/sour cream and guacamole! When I got to my room and discovered that they were Rolled Taquitos, you know the frozen kind you can buy like 100 to a box, I was beyond disappointed and not to mention furious! Flautas are the easiest thing to make and it was a major disappointment. A Mexican restaurant that puts out this type of quick fix doesnt take pride. Since I dont have kitchen access in my hotel and most likely have to return to eat there, being there arent that many choices in town. I held my tongue. I just know not to order that next time. read more

i drive through Gila Bend when i go back and forth between San Diego and Phoenix, usually about every month. ALWAYS stop at Sophie's. She's a hard working lady, always there and puts out awesome food for a very good price. Noticed last time that there are now 3 mexican places in gila bend Used to only be Sophie's. Was concerned. On Sunday, when i stopped there, couldn't help but notice the other two had zero cars and Sophie didn' have an open table. ........guess that says it all. read more

I like to support local restaurants instead of a chain but this time I was disappointed - we seled s this place based on high ratings. I ordered a huevos rancheros. It was just eggs with salsa & retried beans. No where near a true huevos rancheros. My husband ordered eggs over easy with ham (a nice size ham) & potatoes (same price as the huevos rancheros) and fried potatoes - brought him a decanter of salsa. Basically same as me but with meat. I should have it & I would same as huevos rancheros (both had a choice of refried beans or potatoes. Both same price but my husband's had meat. I would both return. read more

Don't let the rustic decor (and the fact that the restaurant is in Gila Bend) fool you!... The food has homemade flair and is simply great. Homemade tortillas and the burritos are enormous! Rode my motorcycle out there for breakfast last week with friends, and the staff knew we were there from out of town, and went out of their way to say "Thanks." The interior of the restaurant is quite small, but they have covered picnic tables outside... I will definitely be back! read more

This place has folded shredded beef tacos that make the stop in Gila Bend for Mexican food a great idea. You can get 'em with lettuce, tomato and cheese (my favorite, doused in their salsa) or with pico de gallo. read more

We were traveling home and decided to stop here. Typically we always order the same thing. My husbands chili verde was green and goopy with uncooked rice and not even a speck of cheese on the beans. Needless to say we were disappointed and then had to wait 15 min just to get our bill. I pointed out what are disappointment meal was to the server and she said that tomatillo was used for the sauce. Last time I checked it was green chili sauce used not tomatillo and it seemed like a lard base. Nasty food read more

Very friendly and excellent service!!! We ate breakfast there and the food was amazing! Very spicy and the salsa was yummy! My boys LOVED the pancakes and the breakfast burritos were HUGE! We just left this place and loved it! We are truck drivers who were driving past the area...and decided to look for a restaurant that was close by to Loves. Loves was only offering your typical unhealthy fast food. We found this spot, pulled up the reviews..and said let's go. Don't let the outside decor, deter you from entering! Once you go inside..we felt like we were transported back in the past..to a local restaurant..over the border. Great authentic food!! Cruising through town on early Sunday evening and need food. No McDonald's for us. The salsa was delicious! Chips thin and crispy. We both got a taco plate, 3 tacos rice and beans a little over $10 each. He got the crispy shredded beef tacos, but bummed by the premade shells. Don't get that! Meat was good though. Instead, get the carne asada tacos on soft corn tortillas, topped with pico. Then pour a lot of that salsa on there. Then lean way over your plate to try to keep your shirt clean. You know when the fat in beef renders away but it's still on your meat and makes those bites super delicious? It was like that! Beans were creamy and smooth, just perfect. Rice was good. I don't care about rice. I should have gotten double refried beans. I will go here again when I'm heading through GB and hungry. I will probably still get 3 carne tacos but skip the rice and beans. I was really full off those 3 tacos as they were full size, not street taco sized. That salsa yo. Mmm. read more

We stopped at Sophia's to get some food to go on our way back to Scottsdale from Puerto Penasco. The waitress was busy, she took our order and politely answered our questions. She brought us chips and salsa while we waited, and thoughtfully loaded our to-go order with extra salsa we asked for because it was so good. The food was exceptional. If you're ever driving through, skip the fast food chains and go to Sophia's. read more
