Came into Gila Bend from Phoenix today on thw way home. Looked up food place and found Sofias. Glad we decided to go. The place was clean and had air conditioning. We were seated quickly. Chips and salsa was brought to our table and drink orders were taken. Salsa was not too spicy, but had some bite to it. On the table was a collection of hot sauces. Ordered tacos and a combination plate of enchiladas, rice and beans. All of the food came out hot and ready to devour. We didn't leave much on our plates at the end of the meal. We come by Gila Bend a couple times a year. Definitely on our list to stop here for food. read more

Small, locals restaurant with delicious food! We all ordered taco salads and were astonished and amazed at the both the huge portions, (especially of the meat in it) and the tastiness. It was a perfect mix of the meat, beans, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and dollops of sour cream and guacamole. I asked for onion as well, and the server was happy to take care of my request. Yvette, the server, was great and attentive even though she was taking care of everyone in the restaurant. No frills, but delicious food! We were driving to imperial sand dunes from Tucson. Once you exit I-10 and hit I-8, your only stop for food is Gila Bend before you get to Yuma. We always prefer to eat fresh home-like food at local businesses rather than the food chains and Yelp reviews, as always helped us in finding a good place, Sofia's. To our surprise, the restaurant was very busy. It took a while to get a booth. The ladies were very helpful and friendly, they let us sit at another small table for two until the booth was ready. Really appreciated, given that there was anlong waiting line. We wanted to eat a very light lunch. So we just had one fish tacos and enchilada combo, as the nachos also fill us. Both were delicious. The salsa was super fresh and tasty, perfect for a hot sunny day. The service was slow given that the place was pretty busy, but that only confirmed that we were eating at the right place. I was a bit skeptical to use their restrooms given the old look of the building, but they were pretty clean and well maintained. Overall, good food and friendly servers. read more

Reviews are a relative thing. If Sofia's where in an urban market they would not do well, in my opinion. What do you get when you walk in the door? The good side: Friendly service, inexpensive pricing, and very predictable menus. It's small and the service is solid. It's relatively clean. What don't you get? Things that set restaurants apart. Service where you get your ice tea topped off when it's empty. A special of the day. On a road trip I would likely be back. It's cheap and fast, clean. So I'd call this a functional place - it provides a solid meal. read more

For what it is, a Mexican restaurant in Gila Bend, Sofia's is greatest. I really like it and when I drive through Gila Bend, I stop here. I have enjoyed huevos rancheros and carne asada with eggs. You can choose flour or corn tortillas. The refried beans are so, so delicious that you will eat every bite. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

We were driving back from Tucson to Los Angeles. My friend recommended Sofia's so we decided to try it. Nice cozy little atmosphere, greeted by a friendly lady. I ordered the #8 combo with cheese enchiladas, tamale, rice and beans. She brought out a big bowl of chips and salsa with our drinks. My wife ordered the California burrito. My enchiladas were delicious and the sauce was perfect!! The frijoles were also outstanding! Unfortunately the tamale was pretty dry. I had asked for pork, but she said they only had beef. I think the pork might have been juicier and saved it. My wife's burrito was also beef with cubed fried potatoes and therefore very dry. There was nothing inside it to bind it together, so as soon as she took a bite, it all kinda fell apart. It just needed some moisture from beans or salsa or guacamole or something. Sofia's was recommended by friends and I'm so happy they let us know about this jewell. We traveled through Gila Bend on our way back to Goodyear AZ after visiting friends in San Diego. The food was delicious. The chips were fresh and salsa was just spicy enough. I ordered 3 enchiladas, two beef and 1 cheese, and my wife ordered the Chile Relleno. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The waitress was very accommodating and told us that travelers from all over know about the restaurant. It has both indoor and outdoor seating. The saying, 'Never judge a book by its cover' applies here. My friend and I whilst going to school would have to travel back and forth to Phoenix at least once a week. And we stopped here religiously. I have tried many items on the menu and I was never disappointed! The sauce they put on their enchiladas is fantastic. The Sonoran enchilada was filled with tastey carne asada and I ate up every bit of it. I'd make a trip to Gila Bend just to eat here. Awesome hole in the wall place when you're traversing across the state. People are friendly, food was good, pricing was low. Came thru on a Sunday and the place was a revolving door with what you could tell were the locals - good sign of a solid place. Thanks Sofia. Sofia's is a warm and cozy cafe with great food. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's a little gem of a restaurant in a one stop sign kind of town. The cafe only seats about 25, but the tables aren't bunched together so it feels roomy enough. Our meal started with a bowl of crispy chips and a tasty red salsa with just enough heat to keep me reaching for my water glass. People with weak gastric systems may want to go light on the salsa, but you hearty souls used to southwest food should really enjoy it. I ordered my favorite, chicken flautas with rice (no beans). They were deep fried and covered in lettuce and tomatoes with sides of sour cream and guacamole (see photo). Everything tasted awesome, service was fast and efficient, and the price was in the Goldilocks range. Sofia's is a great place to stop if you're ever passing through Gila Bend! read more

Wow! Stopped here on the way to San Diego (like many Arizonans) instead of McDonald's down the street. Got a chorizo breakfast burrito with beans and cheese added and it was amazing. Salsa was the perfect amount of spiciness. Keep in mind the breakfast burritos only come with meat and eggs, so you have to pay 99 cents for each extra like beans, cheese, or potatoes. This is our go to stop on our way to or from Phoenix or Tucson. The employees are always really nice. I always order the adobada tacos and they are awesome. It's your normal taco shop vibe, normal taco shop offerings. Always nice to find a hole in the wall in the middle of nowhere on a road trip. Last trip we had chilaquiles and they were awesome. Definitely worth a stop. Don't expect a fancy restaurant. Enjoy. PS This stop was our first in restaurant experience since Covid Started. They are limiting the dining room to 10 customers. On our way from San Diego to Tucson- stopped at Sofia's for lunch and I was very impressed by the food and the service was excellent too. I have tried chile rellenos in many places far more expensive than Sofia's- but hers is excellent with the right amount of gooey melted cheese in the fresh chile. The rice and beans were very good and the nice treat was the chips served warm with a slightly hot salsa roja. Our server was adorable highly energetic woman who greeted is as soon as we walked in the door. The food came out quickly and the price is a great bargain especially these days. My husband has his crispy beef tacos which is the only thing he ever gets for Mexican food and they were very good- not greasy at all. The flour tortillas I had were outstanding! My wife and I are Snowbirding in Gila Bend this Winter. We read the reviews and decided to try this restaurant back in November. We have been eating here 2 to 3 times a week this Winter. The carnitas is out of this world, best I have ever had. Service is always with a smile, even when they are busy. We were just passing through Gila Bend and stopped here for supper. It is a small, unassuming place along the main street through town. I ordered the three enchilada dinner, with different fillings... Carne asada, chicken, and cheese. All of them were delicious with a tasty sauce over the top, with just enough kick to please my palette. They were able to accommodate some of my dietary restrictions by substituting salad for the rice and beans. My husband had a delicious chimichanga with tender carne asada filling. Found this little hidden gem while on a toad trip. Ended up in Gila Bend. Saw this place and said why not. Very small but the food is great. I ordered their Sonoran Enchilad's and my wife had a Chili Relleno and a Taco. You have your choice of carne asada, chicken or ground beef. The Sonoran enchiladas were most unique and I enjoyed them very much. Wife said hers was great also. We of course had chips and their house salsa and I will say that their salsa is yummy! We got off the 8 Hwy in search of some Mexican food...not Taco Hell. We were headed to Humberto's Drive Thru but thought we should drive a little further to see what other options were available. We drove passed Don Jose's Mexican Grill. As I rushed to read local yelp reviews I saw high ratings on Sofia's salsa. That's what won us over! Most of the reviews were right on. Although the food and service was friendly, it was slow with flies roving around and bathroom outside. No alcohol. They brought us chips and cute carafe with salsa that facilitated pouring some over our 6 count hard shell tacos a la carte. We had 3 carne azada and 3 adobada (similar to "al pastor"). We loved them dressed with lettuce, tomatoes and cheese in lightly fried tortillas! Yum! When in Gila Bend this is the place to stop at. We will return! read more

Definitely the best restaurant in Gila Bend, we've been to all of them. I visited again this week after 11 years, I used to come to the area all the time for work, then I got reassigned in 2011. The food was good back then too. Now I'm back in a position where we will visit every few months, I will plan my meals around the hours of this place next time I come. Everybody on my 5 man crew ordered something different and they were all happy with the taste. The downside is the place is small and they do minimal staffing, so the line can go out the door at times and the server can get swamped, but the food tastes good as hell. Ordered ice tea and a carne burrito , what I got was tea that tasted like water. I used my spoon and discovered that it had a very slight color of tea to it. They cook it right!! There is a big sign out front so you can't miss it, but it's otherwise a small, old, nondescrpit white building with a red roof in a dirt parking lot. There isn't much in Gila Bend, but there is a Burger King down the street a ways. DON'T go to the Burger King!! Stop in At Sofia's and you'll be forever grateful you took this advice!! If you walk in and the place is packed, don't worry---there is a huge outdoor seating area filled with picnic tables, but you can only get to it by walking through the main dining area. Ask them to put you out there. Everyone gets their own salsa dish and the salsa is served in a carafe, so you can make yours as hot as you want. Be patient if it is lunch hour. These women are here to serve, but they're only human, and the food is SO good that it is likely all the tables will be full when you get here. We each had burritos and mine was huge. It was as if they put a full half-pound of cooked beef in there, all perfectly simmered and seasoned. The burro was pure meat, wich I prefer. My husband had the chicken burrito and the meat was incredible. It didn't taste like it was factory farmed. SUCH GOOD FOOD!! I swear, the next time we go in I could ask for them to bring me ANYTHING and I would eat whatever they brought me with zero complaints. It's like going home and your mom putting food in front of you. Really, really good food and lots of it. And the chips and salsa they bring you are some of the best we've ever had. Noise level is loud but that's because of the small interior and that they are very packed with paying customers. All walks of life here because of its reputation, parking may even be bad--we had to create our own parking spot on the side of the building because some of the patrons parked over the lines and minimized the spaces available.
