I like to browse this shop when ever I come to the Kukuiula shopping plaza in Poipu. Lots of nice souvenir and gift stuff. I don't believe I've ever been greeted at this shop by any employee. I did find two items I liked and paid. Clerk was nice.

It's a cute, beachy home decor shop that just expanded to Kauai after finding success on Oahu and through Etsy.

The space looks shiny and clean, the wood floors gleaming. We had dinner at Garden Island Grille next door tonight and spent a few minutes beforehand exploring Koloa Trading Post. It was notable for its interesting and appealing merchandise and the absolute unfriendliness of the young woman who was working there tonight. Alan and I wandered through for 5 or 10 minutes looking over the merchandise. We were not acknowledged, nor were any of the other customers who wandered through, as far as I could tell. There are hats and aloha shirts, interesting decorative and functional ceramics, funny socks and oven mitts w/ funny and vulgar sayings.. There are t-shirts and jewelry and other items. We left and went next door to put our name in at the restaurant. The wait was about 30 minutes. Alan saw an attractive long sleeve t-shirt in the interior window facing the hallway to the restaurant. Because he liked it we went back. I thought it was for him, but it was a woman's style and he was thinking it would be for me. I liked it and decided to buy it. He gave me his credit card and I took the shirt to the front desk where the young woman had been helping another customer, who seemed to be making a return. I handed her the shirt and she asked if that was all I wanted. Yes. She rang me up, folded the shirt carelessly and put it in the smallest bag possible. Whoever owns this store has nice taste in merchandise, but needs to hire staff who are more outgoing and helpful. I'm not particularly demanding, but I do expect to be acknowledged when I'm in a store. The 4 stars are for the merchandise.

I found more contemporary pieces and could have spent more time seeing the large collections which incorporate Hawaiian art. We had just been to the Lihue Native Museum the day before. Go here just to see the Niihau crafted necklaces. Amazing. They have one of the best museum quality necklace collections for sale by some of the few remaining living artists. The rare and highly valued shells (kahelelani, laiki, momi, and kamoa), are found on the beaches of Ni'ihau and crafted by the island's residents into various styles of lei, earrings, and bracelets, equaling one of Polynesia's most precious art forms. There truly is something for everyone and they are finally back open after the 22/24 flood. What a great restoration! I did not take pictures because it seemed disrespectful. However, there is a flock of the prettiest chickens you find on the island and this business has recovered from one of the worst floods last year with 57" of rain in 24" hours. The remodeled shop and grounds are amazing to see. Gabrielle can fill you in on the over 45 year history of this amazing establishment. Have fun! Go here before you buy elsewhere.

We were drawn in by the 5 shirts for $10.99 sign, and saw that they had quite an incongruous collection of random tourist souvenirs, fishing supplies, clothing and knick knacks. The store itself is rather old, but prices overall tend to be cheaper than the more prominent and much heavier traffic stores. Service was non-existent, but they accept credit cards, and we were in and out pretty quickly, without any long queues or wait times.

The cool wooden bowls (pineapple, turtle shaped, etc) were all more than half the price of the same items I saw at other shops. Lots of tourist t-shirts here. $3.99 each, and there's a bundle discount if you buy even more. I just wanted a shirt for myself though and was plenty happy to get a soft shirt without breaking the bank. The shop was empty when I wandered in. There was only a man at the register who was reading. I had fun browsing overall. Wish I had more time to see all the various aisles - there were so many little knick knacks and gift items. Would recommend stopping by here if you're looking for gifts and items to take home.
