As far as I can tell, this is the last store in Manhattan that stocks linen canvas on rolls. Blick once did and it's impossible to gauge from online images the color, texture and thickness. Prices here are reasonable too. So why 4 stars? Well, if it weren't for the fact that I went looking in the back row of rolls, I wouldn't have found the specific heavy canvas that I saw on their website--about which I had called in advance to confirm availability. The young rep who was helping me couldn't find it on his printed list, but once I located it, he somehow found the price. I would have thought that the staff would familiarize themselves with the stock. or at least that I'd have been accompanied by someone who did. Not that this influenced my rating, but the mostly young staff, seemed, well, kind of emotionally shut down and unable to crack a smile. This in contrast to the person I spoke to on the phone, who was preternaturally cheery. read more

My husband and I were walking around Soho during our "date day" yesterday and he needed a Molotow liquid chrome marker to customize his figures; the guy who "helped" us just looked dumbfounded and said they don't carry it and recommended a different store, we were grateful. The nuisance, However, was when what seemed like a regular customer there needed to add his two stupid cents and say "oh yeah we don't carry that, go to the other store for your graffiti" Understand this, my husband is Puerto Rican, looks very much like one, too. That was a micro aggression that I'm glad my husband handled diplomatically while making whoever that idiot was look like an ass. He then replied "oh there's nothing wrong with graffiti" then why even say something with a judgmental tone?! The cashier had nothing to say, and I do understand that Soho is predominantly white with these artsy hipsters but I need them to be more culturally competent. I will make sure to not step foot there again, neither will my husband. Clearly art snobs love throwing shade without realizing when they're being stupidly bigoted . The vibe was ridiculously off- as customers we deserved better. But we can't get that anymore. We will stick to Blick for now. And hope that we don't have to hear stereotypical comments like these again. If you know who this guy is, and I hope he reads this- please be better. It's all we ask. I like going to art supplies stores to get inspiration on the next possible project, so I was pretty excited to find this place this past week. I agree with many of the previous reviewers for this place and this is definitely a place to go to if you need sketchbooks, so many options. They have the popular Moleskin series, but also carry Rhodia, Quattro and many others. All very reasonably priced. They also have sketch pens, brushes, paints, stencils, and stock paper. They also have sales and discounts on supplies also, so check back often. The artist in me loves this place! read more

I've been going there since they opened, to several of their locations, and they remain helpful, knowledgeable, complete and surprisingly competitively priced. Walter is the artist's best friend and can offer good advice on just about any medium or technique I've seen fit to ask him about :) The thing that most sets them apart is the unique selection of canvases and the custom ones that they'll make for you if you don't see exactly what you want. TERRIBLE costumer service, rude staff, horrible management! Before anything else, let me start by saying that I've worked in the arts for years! I've always been around artists, art lovers and collectors and have never treated anyone who walked into the gallery like this! I went in to buy some art material as a birthday gift to my husband. I was looking at Golden acrylics (which I already have and use). The employee who was "helping" me (white guy, short hair with a beard, in his 30s) kept telling me that they were expensive and kept pushing me to buy a smaller tube or a cheaper brand. Every question I would ask, he would remind me of the price. I should mention that I'm a brown woman with an accent. By constantly telling me how expensive this was going to be, I think he was implying that they were out of my budget without knowing anything about me! I finally picked up the paint I want and then asked him to show me the sketch books. They were wrapped in plastic and I couldn't see what the paper thickness or texture was like so I asked the employee if he could open one of them so I could see. I decided it was good and asked him to give me one of the unopened ones (because duh, it's a gift). He refuses, saying I MADE him open this. Arguing with me to get the opened one because he's not supposed to do this! Note that I'm spending over $300 on materials here! I told him that his attitude is rubbing me the wrong way and I'd rather not spend my money there. Then he just takes all my shopping (aggressively) and walks away! I asked his name a few times and he just had his back to me, not answering. Finally, the manager walks in and I explain the situation to him and all he has to say is "we're not perfect"!!! Unbelievable! Forget about "perfect", they don't even know the very basics of costumer service or manners and decency! There are so many places to shop for art supplies, don't waste your time and money here! read more

Why aren't more people reviewing this place? This is the BEST place for painters. I say painters because your not going to find craft supplies for grandma here. This is the real deal man. High quality brushes and only the best paints. This place is really just for those serious about painting. I don't remember seeing any winton or any other student grade stuff here.That being said, you will find nice custom canvasses and mediums along with the regular high end art fare. The staff are really smart people and all seem to be serious painters themselves. The store is clean and organized and the people are smart and friendly. Check it out, not far from Dick Blick, Utrecht or Pearl so you can compare and see what I mean. read more

I brought Soho Art Materials a regional piece of original art from Arusha Tanzania. I had done as much research as possible to find the best framing place in NYC . It had been hung and stretched on a rough pine backing which I liked just fine and should have brought this back with me as well. After some online research, Soho looked like the kind of store that was highly professional and had been around. I spoke to a salesperson on the phone - further . encouragement. In the store, the sales man, Walter explained what he was going to do and told me to come back in a week. Nothing that happened had been told to me. So- a week later, I trod back downtown and a man who was not Walter told me that everything had been explained to me about the results and that I was lucky to have someone so professional as Walter to do the work. The top and bottom of the painting disappeared, having gone into the top if the frame. This included part of the artists signature. The centering of the painting was gone. Outraged,I asked to have it taken off the frame, but no, Walter was not there and I had to make the trek the next weekend to retrieve the piece The best news, I found an entirely better place Framers and Stretchers. They do custom work and are entirely open, honest and friendly read more

I visit art shops for a particular reason. I shop at Blick Art Materials in NoHo (for general art supplies), New York Paper Art Central (for their paper and bookbinding department), and SoHo Art Materials (journals and painting supplies). SoHo Art Materials is my go-to art store for their wide selection of sketch and drawing journals. I am a painter, but I no longer paint on linen or canvas. I cannot speak much of their selection here (read the previous glowing reviewers on this area). I paint almost exclusively on large fine paper. For those who are particular or simply love having new journals for all sorts of media, this may be a great place to visit, which is my reason for my glowing review. The selection of journals and pads spans outside of your usual Strathmore, Moleskine, and the average generic hardbound sketchbook bound with economic paper. (All of which you can still find at SoHo Art.) However, the store carries lesser known brands (such as Pentalic, Hand*Book Journals) that may be as good (or better) than the Moleskine. Depends on what you uses the journals for and how well they handle your preference of media, of course. I have stopped visiting Pearl Paint since my art school days and it's also due to the mannerism by some of staff. The quality went down hill. Plus, their selection (if you want to say journals, fine art paper, painter's supplies) isn't on par to New York Paper Art Central and SoHo Art Materials. read more

I finally found studio space in NYC and fortunately Soho Art Materials is close by. For such a small boutique store, they have all my basics ranging from yards of unprimed canvas, pre-fab panel surfaces of various depths and dimensions, paper, brushes, and of course tubes and tubes of paint. Ahhh.... rub me down with a tube of Old Holland and a bucket of Golden gesso. Artists are not really known for pre planing or rationing, especially when it comes to supplies. There are unfortunately not many art supplies stores in the areas where we tend to be able to afford. So the opening of SOHO was a great treat. Not to mention it's across the street from one of the new coffee roasting gems Cafe Vita. So Although a little off the beaten path and a longer walk when it's Brick out... it's great to have a place this large. The store is split between canvas and stretchers, frames and papers and then paints, charcoals, brushes and supplies. There isn't anything new they are offering but most likely they have what you need. Art supplies also maintain their price-point unless you have the option of trekking out to an A.C. Went in hoping to get thin black wire & the woman behind counter said, "this is an ART store" like I was a clueless idiot. Yes, lady, I figured that out. I was not fast enough to query whether Alexander Calder's use of wire disqualified him as an artist. Just as well! Luckily the younger woman (also worked there) said, like for sculpture? This is what an art supply store should be. They focus on what real artists need, and I have found them to be quite helpful. Once, when I was looking for a specific oil color that I couldn't find in any tubes, the salesperson actually mixed two colors for me to show me how they would achieve the color I was seeking. While it's small and doesn't have a huge selection compared to its competitors, the prices are pretty reasonable (I got a super cool wooden travel sketch supply box for about $12) and the staff is very helpful and friendly. It reminds me a bit of the art supply store at my college in Atlanta - it carries those sorts of products at those sorts of prices, so it's probably a good option for students. It's kind of hidden away, though - I wouldn't have known it existed unless they had their Groupon promotion - but I'm glad they did. It's a nice little gem of an art store that artists will find refreshing. read more

This is where the painters go. Not the fakers or the wannabes. Look at their staff- all serious artists who know their shit. They've been with SoHo for years. It shows in their knowledge and in their customer service. I've never been treated like a jerk as I have with so many other chain art supply stores- Blick, Utrecht, Pearl. Those places are corporate giants who don't give a damn about real artists. These folks are real artists and actually give a shit about your interests and helping you. Are the prices crazy like at NY Central- no! Are there douche bag staff- no! They have possibly the best linen selection in the city, and it's very user friendly to go downstairs and check out them out for yourself. Their brush selection is almost amongst the best in the city with heavy stocks of both Isabey and Escoda (two of the very best). They have a wide very of high quality oil paint, they even carry some local small batch boutique brands (which says so much about their attention to quality) I'll be back soon. Is and has always been a serious painter's place. The staff are largely experienced and trained painters- I've acquired as much technical education from them over many years as I ever did in school, and they will grasp your technique and make recommendations. There's nothing cheap, juvenile or "commercial" in the inventory. Most paint and tools are artisanal. Prices are fair. Go, learn. read more
