Truffles with mystery One of the most impressive experiences in NYC with jazz, performance and dinner. Music was full of fun, actors were so talented as much as to make the audiences believe their characters are real. The dinner course provided various options all of which of course were delicious. Especially, the story, which everyone can enjoy easily, went along well with the music from experienced jazz players. This combination strongly supported the actors' showmanship which leads the audiences to be a part of the show. If you ask me what made this show even more special, I would say the auction scene. In that part, all of the audiences became dealers with their fake money which was handed just before the show. It was amazing! I had so much fun. I hosted my 40th birthday party with Truffles Mystery at their Cranford, NJ venue and it was by far one of my best birthday parties ever! The storyline was awesome and everyone got to play a role: some friendships, some backstabbing. It was hilarious to see everyone get into their characters. The production crew made sure everything ran smoothly and that we didn't run astray but still allowed the story to manifest according to what each character was saying. Having a private venue with small bites being passed around and a bartender elevated the party to the next level. It's been almost a week and everyone is still talking about it. We were a party of eight...a great time!! It was so much fun, the characters were fun AND funny and the musicians top notch. Piano player was killer! It wasn't interactive so much that you felt uncomfortable but you definitely felt like you were a part of this zany comedy. The show was ok, but I have been spoiled by Broadway productions. I guess it's very imaginative to base a show on a truffle. I had a crab cake but it tasted like it had cumin on it, which was not a good taste. I did enjoy the truffle sample platter, which was soooo delicious. The Truffle Bill said the sample platter was sponsored by Urbani Truffles, so I went on the Urbani website and ordered $100+ worth of the truffle oil, truffle with mushrooms and truffle balsamic vinegar. Yes, it was that good. I have been obsessed with truffles ever since having the truffle crab flan at Bouley (RIP). I recently had the truffle sampler at Eataly downtown (pretty good). The lead "restaurant owner" was horrific; I don't think there was a single line he delivered without flubbing over a word. There were a few "diamonds in the rough" that made you feel very sorry that they were stuck in such a horrid show. Came here with some friends for my 30th birthday. The show was very entertaining but it was not what I expected. I thought it was one of Those shows where the audience solves the mystery. So it's not your typical murder mystery dinners. It was more of the audience watching the actors solve the mystery out loud. To that point, I think the acting was great and the cast did a great job involving the audience on minke cues here and there. Oh and the food was delicious! Great great great show! First off i found parking right across the street on a busy saturday night! It only cost me $11.50 versus the $35 for a close by lot. As we walked in, you have a mandatory $2 coat check that you pay for at the end of the night. I had to go to the bathroom, so as i was going, the bathroom was extremely small. My knees practically touched my face trying to use it. Anyway, we were escorted to our table which was in the front. They gave us a truffle appetizer. Im not sure what the contents where but since ima not a fan of truffles, i didnt eat much but the bread and cream cheese. The dinner show started and it was very interactive. The food came out really fast too. Surprisingly, the food was decent. I was afraid for it to be horrible but it wasn't, it just needed some salt. I loved that the entertainment was interactive and involved the crowed, which made it fun. For dessert we got chocolate pudding with a chocolate stick and gold dust flakes. All in all, i would love to come here again if they have a different show. Tickets are around 90-100 per person, the more u buy the more you save. Frustratingly bizarre is the way I would describe this. It wasn't much of a murder mystery, it was more of amateur musical night. We paid a decent penny for VIP tickets and were thoroughly disappointed by the lack of a good story line and complete over acting. The character Olga screamed and screeched the whole time. It was like nails on a chalkboard and we wound up leaving early because it was so painful. The steak wasn't good at all either. We both made it through about a third of it before we decided it wasn't even worth it and we would take the check and head out. The chef in the story also was so over the top it was uncomfortable. Came here to celebrate my birthday with friends. The actors did a great job of assuming their roles and really tried to interact with the audience whenever possible. Don't expect a murder mystery where audience members solve the case - the cast members will solve the mystery aloud in their own creative way. Overall, great performance and seamless transitions between characters. We were upgraded to "VIP" which included an app and dessert along w/ champagne and a goody bag (a bag of chips and a jar of chocolate candies). The menu seemed mediocre at best with only one vegetarian option so our group decided to have dinner elsewhere. Overall, definitely an interesting experience and would recommend for as a one-time thing. To get the most out of it, go with an open attitude and ready to have a whimsical time. read more

We attended for my Mother In Law's 70th birthday, and had three generations (10 people) sitting on either side of the long table, near the back of the room. After reading the other reviews, it's clear Truffles has improved its food offerings recently, which I found to be delicious. The chicken portion was generous and had great flavor. The pasta and steak also looked great (no one in our group got the salmon). I especially enjoyed the truffle appetizers, which I gobbled up with delight, and the dessert was light and just the right flavor to end the night. I didn't order a drink, but the folks who did seemed pleased with the portions and the speediness of arrival. Our waiter was great. The jazz music before and live accompaniment during the show was also excellent. I gave it a three-star review for the same reasons as many other folks - I felt it was too loud and lacking in context. It would have been nice to start with an intro - perhaps a narrator - explaining what we were about to experience to help the audience participate and to set expectations. Asking people to put away their cell phones and keep conversations at the table to a minimum would help as well. The show starts with two people on stage more or less yelling at each other over a marital dispute. The tone and volume of this part of the script is off putting, and in my opinion not suitable for the 8 and 11 year olds we had with us (we asked in advance if it was child-friendly, and were told it was). It's difficult to follow what is happening at the beginning - I noticed many people with faces of confusion before, during, and after the auction scene. As the play went on and other characters were introduced, running in from the back of the room, they were also quite "shouty", if I can use that word. Many other Yelpers complain about the volume, which was certainly loud, but I think it was an artistic choice and overall the whole play involved too much shouting. I am onboard with the idea of being over the top and "campy", but ultimately I think it's too strong, and toning things down just a little would go a long way. The actors are clearly very talented, both at improv, singing, and acting, and the experience for the audience would be much better. Overall, I cannot recommend this for the food and drinks alone, but think with a few tweaks to the artistic choices this could be a much improved experience. read more

Highly recommend! Such a wonderful night. Everything was on point... This is the perfect place for a date night, from the ambiance to the food to the show itself! I loved how intimate the venue was and the steak was especially delicious. All of the actors we're invested in their roles and did a great job, especially involving the audience (but not too much). Campy good times! Excellent musicians, hilarious and charming cast. I had secured a couple discount tickets for the brunch show. (If you drink, for your wallet's sake, PRE GAME.) Cozy venue, good food, and nonstop silly fun. I still have the sexy "Rat a tat tat..." tune stuck in my head. I thought it might be a little more interactive, like a typical murder-mystery where the audience is assigned characters, but you need only relax and enjoy the puntastic commotion. The venue is a lovely place-- the cocktails are a little pricy, but the happy hour deal makes it way more worth it. The bartender does not skimp you on the alcohol either. I wanted to get their chocolate raspberry martini but I was so full from the dinner I couldn't justify that dessert. The show was great. Really funny, really good with the audience, and it felt very approachable. The actors even go around and introduce themselves to you in character when you're seated! They're all very funny and dedicated to character. Truffle products for an appetizer-- some truffle cheese, truffle chips, and straight up truffles, all very luxurious and tasty. For the main course, I definitely suggest the hangar steak. The marinades were so good I even ate all my veggies. Dessert was some chocolate truffles-- not too many, but just enough to satisfy a sweet tooth. Just the right portions, great quality, and a really fun show! Just came back from an amazing evening at truffles murder mystery dinner. My amazing husband treated me here for my birthday. We sat in the VIP section and I must say it was worth every penny. The show was hysterical, the staff was very accommodating and and the food was delicious. The producers attention to detail showed in the way that everything was set up for us. The cast was very engaging with the audience. My favorite characters were Bruno the chef and Carlo the waiter. Isabella has an amazing voice and the rest of the cast were great too.This place definitely deserves five stars and more. We would definitely come back!! read more

Terrible business etiquette! We did not get to see a show or try the cuisine because I received an email 3 days prior to our reservation of 7 people that the show had been cancelled due to a venue change! We specifically flew in from IL to attend this show! I normally do not leave reviews like this but the email they sent to me was sent like spam so I am assuming they did not want me to see it... offering VIP seating for a different show or a full refund. I opted for the full refund which I still have not received! It's been almost 3 weeks now and I continue to get the run around via phone and email. I have since posted a fraud charge with my bank. What an unexpected pleasure for me and my mom last Friday. The show was so great and the food was top notch! Our salmon was cooked to perfection and the dessert to die for. What made the experience even better than a Broadway show, however, was the amount of interaction the actors had with the audience, keeping us, the audience, engaged the entire time! Lets talk about the eats first. I have to say the food was really good. The steak was cooked perfectly and quite flavorful. The chicken was tender and a full half - filling. The drinks were sophisticated and well priced, yay! Now the show. The entertainment starts as soon as you enter with jazz, of course. The characters are also interacting with guests during this pre-show period. The story was inventive and the interactivity kept me engaged the whole time. The acting could be over the top, but in my eyes it added to the overall charm of the show. It was a wonderful evening! The food is great, the evening starts before the show with performers setting the ambiance around the room. Mild interaction but nothing in your face so you can be part of the show and feel involved but also hang with your friends and enjoy your delicious meal! My husband and I had a wonderful time at Truffles Mystery! It's the perfect date night, whether you live in NYC or are visiting from out-of-town. They encourage formal attire so we had an excuse to get all dolled up and hit the town. Before the show started, we sat at our table enjoying the live jazz and ambience. The venue is the perfect setting for the experience. The show is highly interactive, and the actors set the scene by walking around mingling with the guests (one of the actors, who plays a waiter, was so convincing that my husband tried to order a drink from him!) The show itself is highly energetic, entertaining, and over-the-top hilarious. The actors have excellent comedic timing, the singing was on point, and the jazz ensemble was superb. I also really enjoyed the writing, both the music and the dialogue. Finally the pace of the show works well to keep the audience engaged while enjoying a hearty dinner. Afterward we stuck around for a drink at the bar and chatted with one of the actors. We also learned that the venue was hosting a band later that same evening. We didn't end up staying, but it would be easy to make a night out of it. Overall, a terrific & unique experience that I would highly recommend. read more

Let me start off by saying this is nothing personal to the cast etc this is a job and a clever and original idea for dinner theater but that's as positive unfortunately as I can get overall - to keep this short I will list out the pros and cons and you can make up your own mind on whether it's worth the $85 a person ... Cons 1. This is not broadway, or even off broadway but merely a grab your closest friends and family come up with an idea and run with it in type production all while hosting it in your basement type of play - 2. The microphones on the actors were very loud and terrible quality granted I know it must not be easy to voice over people eating and etc but it just doesn't sound great 3. The idea of the entire play - a 2lb truffle was honestly strange and lacked interest - *the murder mystery part not nearly what you expect and left us wondering after the fact what we watched on stage and where was the murders/mysteries exactly 4. The stage and restaurant itself very small and cramped esp while waiting for show - I don't know how the people there just eating dinner were not disturbed as we were on top of them and the bar 5. Food was terrible - how can you mess up steak ? 3 of our steaks in our party were just about raw , when cooked again it was a combo of raw and chewy and uneatable .. The treats on the table the minute we sat down were interesting a combo of kids candy and a cake for our parties bday (kind of tacky if you ask us) 6. Unfortunately due to the seating we had a group of 20 yr olds on there phones and talking the entire show above us which ruined any chance of us actually enjoying what little plot we could understand Pros 1. The cast had a lot of personality and the voices on the woman were great - yes the mics were terrible but you can tell they had experience with the songs 2. Allowing the audience to be part of the show at one point was a good distraction to the other issues ... 3. The location is down the street from time square and parking on the street was very good surprisingly enough So that's it's - the big question is would I recommend probably not but I would suggest a revamp and a new idea bringing this murder mystery back to its classic roots and maybe offer a different type of steak for less issues with cooking for the masses - read more

Worth the wait! I purchased tickets for a December 8th show but they had to postpone their opening. But honestly, it worked out better for me. I arrived at about 4:25 for the 5pm show and waited at the bar until "curtain" time. They will close out your tab before you're seated. A second tab will be started at your table. The front of the restaurant is typical NYC sized, nice but got a bit cozy when everyone got there. Don't worry, the dining area is spacious. The cast came around and mingled as everyone was being seated (assigned seating). The food was delicious! The serving size is comparable to that at a sit down catered event. My steak was cooked properly. THE SHOW - I've never been to dinner theater before so I don't have a reference point but it was perfectly over acted. It was a live soap opera, well a tiny bit tamer than a soap opera. But I truly enjoyed the show. The singing was great! They learned a few audience members' names and got them involved (not too involved) and they were great sports about it. After the show, you can meet/congratulate the actors which is nice. I planned the Truffles murder mystery dinner theater as my 28th birthday party. I really liked the Swing48 venue and the staff and show's cast are all amazingly friendly and welcoming. They were willing to help in any way to make the experience a good one. The story line was slightly hard to follow if you don't pay attention the whole time but it had an interactive aspect, we got a few laughs out of it and it was something different. I don't think the tickets are worth full price for what you get, but the Groupon price made it more feasible to get my group willing to give it a try. A++++++ for the super nice cast and producer. Hilarious show, delicious and well portioned food, and a very comfortable venue. The interactive nature of the show was a riot. Also, from my experience each show is slightly unique each time, which is a big plus for me. Who wants to see a robotic performance? Entertaining enough to see if alone or with others.
