I live in a townhome. I did not know that I can have a Solar Panel on my roof. HOA discourages to have a solar panel on the roof. After little research, I found out under the new law (Civil Code 714.1), HOAs no longer have the authority to prohibit Solar installations. We recently had solar installed by solar technologies and could not be happier with the results. We started the process in December of last year. Clint Biddle did a great job walking us through the process. The quote was expedient, thorough and easy to understand. Due to a backlog of installations, we didn't get started until early April. Once they started, they worked very quickly. PG&E came out on a Tuesday and turned off the power so the electrician, Justin, could update our power service. The panels were completely installed by Thursday and all the connections were made by Friday. Justin came back the following week to install a level 2 electric vehicle charger. We are now powered by the sun, and our car (at least partially and slightly indirectly) runs on photons! The system has been up and running for nearly 3 months and so far we have avoided 2988 pounds of CO2 emissions which equates to 1456 pounds of coal not burned, 3 barrels of crude oil, 35 mature trees, 1071 lbs of garbage recycled, 3227 miles not driven, or 153 gallons of gas not burned. "FREE" * SOLAR!!! I am an Electrical Engineer and I spent two months interviewing installers. Clint Biddle designed a system that provides 90% of our power, with the remainder to come from PG&E in it's lower 2 tiers for cheap pricing. * So here is how it works, this will save you a bunch of time: Clint used Google Earth and determined the azimuth of our roof and how high the panels would need to be. Then a 3 way call to PG&E was made to get 1 year of usage data. Clint then came and spent about 1 1/2 hours at my home taking pictures and going over the different options. Options included cheaper panels, most with a 20 year (the life of the lease). The most money can be saved over time if you buy the system outright. I couldn't do that so I went with the 20 year lease option, where the INSTALLATION IS ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY FREE. No hidden charges. This can be done because big companies like Google and PG&E back solar companies in order to be able to take the state rebates (you don't get to claim them) and they can then also write off the depreciation of your solar system over five years. I have a 2300 sq. foot home in Scotts Valley with 4 bedrooms and 5 people. I went with 18 of the the brand new 300W SunPower panels. They are only slightly larger than the 200W panels and the SunPower panels generate more electricity on overcast days than panels from other suppliers. Other designers said they could not fit nearly that many and they were only 200W panels. These panels come with a 25 year warranty, which is very important. Because, after the 20 year lease ends it PROBABLY will cost more to remove the system that to just let you keep it yourself. There are no guaranties on that and another possibility is you continue month to month with a lease or are offerred a new lease. We also went with a SunPower inverter. It clicks for a minute when the sun first comes up and the system starts,and when it automatically shuts off at sundown. The inverter has a limited life expectancy and is expected to fail once during the lifetime of the 20 year lease - the replacement is free. If it fails after 20 years, it costs abound $3,000 to replace. I'm hoping that goes down over time, as do most electronic devices. It measures about 12" wide and 24" tall and there are 2 other small boxes that also need to be mounted on an exterior wall by the inverter. They can add a new circuit breaker box in your house, or if you have spares in your existing box, those can be used. What about roof damage? Solar Tech gives you a roof warranty of, I believe 10 years, saying the installation won't cause you any problems. What if I sell the house? The new owner has to be willing to take over the lease. But why wouldn't they, really? What if the system gets damaged somehow? That is an issue with your homeowners insurance. Be sure to call your agent and see if solar affects your insurance payment. Mine did not. Once our system was all designed, a deviation to the fire code was obtained by Solar Tech to allow the design to be installed, while ensuring it was safe. The fire department had to ensure that there was ample space for them to take an axe to your roof to get to the attic if that is needed due to fire. The system worked exactly as designed, saving us money (about $90/month with a monthly bill averaging around $200 before solar) every month so far, and it's been about six months. Right now PG&E owes us money due to long summer days, but it should average out to me paying PG&E $100 or so at the end of the year. You will get monthly statements. PG&E comes out and installs a bi-directional electrical meter (no SmartMeters yet that do this) so you get credit when your system is putting electricity back on the grid. That happens in the middle of the sunny day when PG&E rates are highest. Then you try and run appliances after 9pm (varies) when you "buy back" electricity from PG&E at their lower rates. That is all a part of designing your system and estimation yo My neighbor two doors down was sold on the idea and also had a solar system installed by Solar Technologies- and I got a referral bonus!. Quality parts from a panel company with a large US presence. We had no problems from start to finish! Online monitoring for free too! Other companies only designed a system that would offset much less of our electricity usage, and for about the same cost. Solar Tech even had a promotion at the time that put $500 in my pocket once the installation was completed. The crew were great, and the panels and inverter are working perfectly. We received bids from 3 companies before choosing Solar Technologies. They had the best price and excellent service. Jarrett took the time to help us evaluate all aspects of the system including design, output, life span, panel selection, warranties, federal tax credits and loan options. You have choices in panel manufacturers and there was no pressure in this selection process. Jarrett presented the advantages and disadvantages of each manufacturer. We chose Sun Power panels due to their reputation and lower degradation rate over time. They are more expensive than others but worth the investment due to the quality, output and lower degradation rate than other panels on the market. Jarrett helped size our system perfectly. Our goal was to produce enough energy to offset our entire yearly bill. Our first year true up bill resulted in a net bill of 6 cents (not per kWh, but total dollars for the year). We couldn't get any closer than that! Although weather and electricity consumption will affect this true up in future years, the first year shows how well the system is sized for our current needs. With our Electric part of our PG&E bill getting out of hand and having talked about getting solar for a while. I started doing some research on companies and brands of Equipment. The only real choice for me was a SunPower system. Since they are made in the USA and the most efficient panels on the market. I had four companies come out and give me bids on our project, all SunPower Elite dealers. Our sales person Tim Glanville was Great! He is very knowledgeable on the equipment and paperwork, and able to answer all the questions. He listened to our needs and expectations of the system, as well as the look of the design. When it came time for the Installation, we had Mark and Jamie come out and get our system up in less time than they estimated and they were very professional. All the electrical wiring and paneling they put in as well as the panels themselves look really clean and efficient. They left no mess at the end of each day and were very conscientious about keeping it clean and making sure our dogs didn't get out. I had Chris from the office come out for the Inspection of the system, the City gave us a 3 hour window and he was here a half hour early and had everything ready for when the inspector did show up. We did have one minor issue that we had to wait for their IT guy Charles to get back from vacation to fix. That had to do with the SunPower Monitoring system. Which he was able to take care of in about a half hour. I really like watching that meter spin backwards, as well as being able to track our systems information on my phone and computer. All of the guys I dealt with were on time, very polite, courteous and very customer service orientated. I am very disappointed with Solar technologies! It has been over a month since they installed my solar on the roof of my house and it has still not pass inspection . I have gotten the run around from everyone at this company from Megan, Kyle, Marina, Allison, Jaime! I got my quote and sign my paperwork back in February! They said, it would take a few months to get in their schedule. I was told May would be my installation date. We expected a call from them in May. Mid May I had to call them and spoke with someone that said our sales person was no longer with their company. The bad part was no one at that company took over his paperwork or sales. It was my call for them to realized they missed our installation date. Now, they told me my installation would not be until June or July. This is ridiculous for a company to not realize what is going on. They need a better system for installation schedule. I know companies have computers and everything should be logged in daily. Who's job is it to keep track of all the sales and installation dates? As of today, we are given another excuse as to why the inspection was not done, Marina was out yesterday and Kyle does not know where they are with my job! This inspection did not pass the first time the inspector was out and now it has been reschedule twice! I spoke with PG&E, yesterday. I know for a fact my solar is not connected with PG&E! We have lost communication (again) with the solar system. I've called and left messages and am currently trying to contact thru chat. Two and a half hours ago I was at #21, now I've made it up to #6 in the queue. Lousy service--for months I've been getting an error message about inaccurate information. Now nothing. They'll put it in great, but follow-up is LOUSY. Updated: @7:15 I was up to #5 in the queue when it was closed and I was dropped. Over 4 hours online and got nothing. So...this morning (Saturday) I called the Sunpower number on the website and was told to unplug the system from the wall and wait until somebody noticed me and would contact me by Tuesday since Monday's a holiday. Tim was our application engineer and did a terrific job at advising us on options and running a series of cost/benefit models to help select the ideal sized and configured system. My solar system was installed nine years ago, and the performance has exceeded all expectation. In fact the system has easily paid for itself. In seven of the nine years my annual electric deficiency has been less than $10 for the whole year! One year it was less than $24. And the year that P G & E changed the meter I was hit with a deficiency of $161. I tried arguing with P G & E about the meter change cost but without success. For the whole nine years I have detailed information on consumption, sale back to P G & E, and net deficiency or surplus with month by month details.
