When I visit Kansas City, Solaris Massage is high on my list of places to visit. I am a frequent traveller, and finding a spot to escape the bustle of airports and hotels is very important while on the road. Solaris is located near downtown, the P&L and Crown Center, so its convenient to get to and easy to find. The space is warm and inviting and you can tell that the space is set up with intent and consideration in order to make clients feel at home. The staff are brilliant! I have been several times and had a different therapist each time. The therapist exhibited a great level of professionalism and I knew I was in good hands. Every single massage I've gotten here has been excellent, and I've gotten something like two dozen. However - there was twice when I had an appointment and they were a no-show. The first time, I got someone on the phone and she came right over, so I got the massage late but still got it, and there was a price adjustment because of it. All is well - mistakes do happen sometimes. But the second time, I couldn't get anyone by phone and left voice messages before having to go back home. I never got a phone call back, but two emails that both suggested - the second more emphatically - that the solution to the problem was for me to not be a customer there any more. So I'd say only use this place if it's not a problem for you if they have a once-in-a-long while no-show. read more

I have been a client of Solaris Massage for many years. It has always been a wonderful experience. All the therapists have been quite wonderful. I have had many aches and pains, which have been healed at this place. I'd go so far as to say my visits here have changed my life - in a very positive way! Prior to COVID-19 I was a regular client, seeing Kip approximately one time per month. Needless to say, the pandemic put a halt to many things, including massage. This, along with so many other things about the last year, was very sad. As things have begun to open up, Solaris Massage has also reopened its doors. I was able to return and have a massage from Kip in the last few weeks, and once again, I left refreshed and recharged. Solaris Massage looks as good as ever and the staff is taking the proper precautions to make sure you are comfortable and confident in their facility. It wasn't a good fit for me. I was actually pretty excited about the location because it's a stones throw from where I live and I could walk there. I didn't mind the low-key vibe, I've actually been to massage businesses that had less than they do and I'm down with minimalism as long as I'm getting quality service. The person at the front desk was neither rude nor cordial, just present; and that's fine. It was the end of the day, maybe they were tired. I don't know their life. The massage therapist was professional and did all the steps - showed me the room, told me where to put my clothing, etc. The massage itself was relaxing, but was not the style of massage I requested. I requested a deep tissue massage, but got a combination of trigger point and hot stone massage. I did not expect to be pummeled, but I did expect to leave feeling some release in the places that were tight, particularly in a place I'd mentioned to the therapist before the massage started. Checking out was fine, I was provided a glass of room temp water - which was good. It's important to hydrate after massage and I exclusively drink room temp water, so thumbs up for that. I give one star for the location, one for the water and the other star is for what I could gather to appreciate about the rest of the experience. Overall, it wasn't the experience I wanted and I won't be back. read more

Posting an updated review based on additional experiences. I've now seen three different therapists - Kip, Atina, and Joe. As with all providers anywhere, each has their own method, but all are attentive and thorough. They really demonstrate care with their clients. Studio still isn't fancy if that's what you're looking for, but the quality and price are on point. Especially with the constant specials/packages you can find and book online. Easy to use website & easy to book online (which, it's 2019 but so many massage places don't let you book online)! I had been dealing with a muscle spasm/intense pain for about 2 weeks in my back and nothing had been helping. I had an appointment with Joe, told him what I had been dealing with and what I was looking for, and he completely alleviated the pain. I also think I may have fallen asleep? I have been to Solaris before, but I recently received an ashiatsu massage from Kip and it was a whole new experience. I have lower back pain and perpetually tight calves and hamstrings. Clinging to bars mounted on the ceiling, Kip dug in with her feet and released a lot of the tightness I'd been feeling. It's not for the faint of heart--fine line between pleasure and pain and all that--but she can adjust to your needs and tolerance. Plus, she dismounted and worked in hot stones and a few other methods to completely relax the smaller muscle groups and fingers and toes. It was kind of like an amusement park ride. I wanted to go again right after. But, you know, reality happens. Now, don't expect a spa. It's two rooms in a gym. But that's what attracts me to the place. It's more about working the kinks out than loofas and foot baths. The rooms are relaxing, the music is more Jose Gonzalez than Zamphir and Kip is so down-to-earth you don't feel self-conscious talking about the weird dull pain in your glute...if you were to have such a thing. So go, laugh, relax and leave feeling a little more ready to take on what's next. read more

I've been going to Solaris when I can for years now. I don't live in KC anymore or I'd go more often, but definitely make a point to go whenever I'm home visiting family. I had a hot stone massage in Seattle a few months ago and the stones were so hot they were burning my skin and I had to beg her to remove them. The masseuse said I was just way too sensitive to do hot stone massages, and I wanted to be like "Um, Kip has never burned me once, let's not blame my skin mkay." Anywho, this place is great and very homey. As others noted, it's not your glossy, fancy-pants spa environment, but, like, you're going to be lying on a table naked with your eyes closed, so how important is that really? As long as the massages are good (and they are), people are friendly (they are) and prices are workable (they are), that's kind of the trifecta. read more

We did the couples massage on a Tuesday afternoon of playing hooky. I think we both walked away thinking, "that was ... nice." The atmosphere wasn't really relaxing when we walked in, but I'm not sure what I was expecting though (there is a lot of wood paneling and obscure pictures). My massage was good. My wife said her massage was "ok". The only thing I found frustrating was the outside noises. The location is in a good area, but where there is a lot of traffic. This created some distractions to my concentration on relaxation, but I walked out feeling better than when I walked in. The people were really friendly. The place was easy to find, and in a nice area of town (Check out the restaurants nearby!). Their prices are really good for the experience overall - good service, nice professional people, good massage, ok atmosphere. The world's Best Husband got me a Solaris massage this year for Valentine's Day, and I was so grateful I cried actual tears like a human. Kip is a genius and a goddess, and if I wasn't on a budget, I'd be at Solaris monthly. I'm sure the others are wonderful, too! I just have always gotten my massages from Kip and so I stick with her. She's great if you head in with something specific (last night it was my awful neck) or if you just go in and say "I'm stressed, Kip. Make me feel better." Also, "Kip" is just a really cool name and it's fun to say out loud, okay. So. As others have mentioned, this is not a spa-like massage place. It's a smallish room in the same building as the Gym KC's Westside location and has the same kind of quirky sensibility - interesting art and curtains and carpet. It's exactly my type of place, but it's understandable, I guess, that some people prefer something more elite feeling, or more institutional. So, you check in and head into a teeny tiny room where you get as nekkid as you're comfortable with and cover up with a sheet and a light blanket. There's usually some sort of music, which helps keep out the ambient noise from outside, but you can actually go later at night (as late as 7:30 or 8, I think) which helps a lot. It was dead quiet the last time I went. It smells nice, you know, like hippie oils and whatnot, and Kip will chat or keep quiet - she's pretty good at feeling out what you're in the mood for. I tend to go with 30 minute massages because any longer and I start to feel awkward or I fall asleep. Afterwards, you get a nice glass of water and chat, or you can just pay and leave. Everything about Solaris is just so low-key and friendly and makes me feel wonderful. It really is a KC gem, and their prices are extremely reasonable. read more

I love this place!!! I have been going for about a year and a half maybe. One of the things I like about it is the atmosphere when you walk in. It is very kitschy and warm. Not like a spa or salon. No bright lights or people bustling around waiting for appointments.. They only have 3 rooms i believe so you won't be waiting. I always go to Kip and she is always waiting right there for me. There is no rush when you walk in and she always gives you your allotted time. I love the rooms, they each have personal touches from the masseuses.. or it seems that way. Kip has been the only person I have allowed to give me my massages for a long time. I guess a year and a half almost. I am constantly on my feet for work and she has really helped me out. She always listens to my concerns and focuses on the problem areas I have at that time.. My last massage I fell asleep.. Maybe a little too relaxed as I kept waking myself up snoring.. Oops!! Prices are extremely reasonable too. $90 for 90 minutes.. I'll take that.. read more

If I were a rich man I would come here after every workout! Alas, tis not the case for the time being.... I ran my first half marathon this morning and it went really well so I rewarded myself with a 60 minute "Fire and Ice" massage. Absolutely wonderful! The only thing that could have made this massage better is if it had lasted eight hours. After the hour was up I was so relaxed that I never wanted to get up from the table! I also really think it's cool that after the massage you are given a glass of water and they sit down to chat with you before paying. Even better this time -- Kip gave me a jar of bath salts so the race recovery can continue even after leaving the place! read more

This place has a great rustic feel to it. It's not the typical beige, grey or white spa. This seems to be an old office converted to a massage spot with a lot of character. Regardless of the space, it was a great massage, my husband and I had the couples stone massage, late on a Saturday afternoon. The therapists did not rush us, were nothing but gracious, kind and did an exceptional job. I fell asleep during the massage which never happens; I was so relaxed. My husband who was skeptical about the massage said it was in his top 5. We had a super simple and great booking experience, I used their online form and had a response in a matter of hours. When I called to confirm the appointment time it was a very pleasant experience. We had the best experience here and will be going back soon! I do agree the outside noise can be heard, so if you are easily distracted during a massage, just ask them to turn up the music. Which is really cool, not like that trickling water stuff that makes me just want to use the bathroom in the middle of the massage. read more

Very rude over the phone, the whole experience was weird. As if they are doing you a favor by letting you book a massage with them. Asked to make an appointment for two. Asked if she could tell me who the massage therapist will be, the answer "I can't tell you that, our lawyers forbid us from revealing that info" Hmm... booked many sessions at other places with specific people, even individual schedules are posted online. Not sure what the deal is with multiple lawyers protecting identities of the massage therapists. Yelp reviews are great for, say Kip, but no way to get Kip or anyone specifically. They are definitely catering to a certain type of clientele, just not sure what that is. read more

I've been coming to Solaris for over a year now, and each experience has been better than the last. Honestly, this is one of the best massage places I've gone to. I usually see Kat and she's great, always attentive and friendly. The last time I came in, I tried Solaris's Fire & Ice because I wanted a treatment that would take care of some lower back pain as well as some areas that I had neglected to ice after working out. It was perfect and I almost didn't want to drive home because I was so relaxed. It's definitely something I'll be getting again. read more

I purchased a Google Offer for use here and upgraded from a 30-minute to a 1-hour massage. The experience was good, not great. They have some interesting, less than professionally worded policies that you must agree to before accepting treatment. I still recommend them for a convenient downtown massage parlor. Kip was great, and I say that as someone who is not normally a fan of massage. I've had too many people just kind of push my muscles around. But Kip really knows her stuff. She listened to me and focused on the particular knots I asked her to. She's just way better than any other masseuse I've had. All in all, an excellent experience. As a side note, she was friendly but without being peppy -- very relaxing to be around. And I liked the music better than your average hippie panflute stuff. One more thing: I had gotten a gift certificate, which had expired. They sent me a single reminder email (on the date it expired) telling me I could still use it anytime. Had a 90 minute couples massage with my husband. The place got us right in, and was easy to find. Did not have to wait at all when we got there either. However, the massage was average. I had deep tissue, and it was more like a swedish. My husband had swedish and said it was average as well. It would be great for someone who wanted something at a great price, easy to get into for an appt, and just wants to relax. Kip, at Solaris Massage is more than just a massage therapist; she is massage "healer". I went to her this summer with a frozen shoulder that I had been suffering with for 3 months. After just one 60 minutes hot stone massage, my shoulder was significantly better by the next day. By the end of the week it was completely healed. I had been doing stretching exercises recommended by my physical therapist for three months prior to Kip's massage with only slight improvement. I could not even sleep on my right side at night due to the constant pain. When I had a frozen shoulder about 9 years ago, I went to a physical therapist and then did exercises regularly and it finally cleared up in about a year. Kip fixed me up it in one relaxing session and I didn't have to do anything but enjoy the massage! I plan to have another massage soon just to keep my right shoulder healthy. When I get stressed it tends to go straight to my shoulders, especially my right one. It always feels like I have a piano wire in my shoulder that is being pulled as tight as a drum. After my massage with Kip, my whole shoulder area seemed to loosen up and relax. I highly recommend Kip at Solaris Massage. I am new to massages. I don't really care about atmosphere or ambiance, although I would say Solaris is a warm welcoming place that has a "mother earth" vibe that I feel comfortable with.
