Ready for school!
Rebecca B.

My 4-year-old granddaughter went to the pediatrician prior to attending transitional kindergarten this fall. As it turned out, the little darling could not see shapes at a distance. An appointment with a pediatric ophthalmologist was recommended and we followed up. My granddaughter requires low prescription glasses - we'd never had any idea she had vision issues. After checking with her health insurance about coverage - there wasn't any - I looked into Solo Bambini (the company the ophthalmologist had recommended to us) and gave them a call. A wonderful representative - Nadia! - picked up the phone. Nadia patiently walked me through filling out the order form I found on their website. She professionally answered all my many questions. After we hung up, I had another question. I dialed Nadia and she immediately picked up. Gasses were ordered and paid for. Two days after school started, my granddaughter received her new soft-framed (for comfort and to prevent breakage) lavender glasses. She couldn't be cuter!

My six year old recently got his first pair of glasses... and it's fair to say that this was at least as traumatic an experience for his parents as for him. When it came time to pick his first frames - and therefore his new everyday look as well as that which can have a huge impact on his comfort - we didn't know where to start. We tried several of the usual eyeglass places and two optometrist offices, but none of these was geared towards either kids or first time glass wearers (they tended to just point us towards the glass case and say "go for it"). Eventually we headed to Solo Bambini, and were relieved that we did. The store itself is a practically a temple to kids' frames - there must be several hundred options to choose from versus a couple dozen at most stores. Interestingly, while it is definitely a store for kid's glasses, I would not call it a kiddie store - it's pristine inside and there are no toys or anything - so it feels more geared to the parents than kids. Fortunately there is a cool indie candy store next door, so you do have a good bribe option for after the appointment if needed. More importantly, the woman who helped us (I'd assume the proprietress) knows what she is doing and immediately started pulling out glasses that fit our son's face well, helping him try them on -- and also listening to what both he and we were saying about each pair. In the end he came out with a really nice looking and lightweight frame-less pair, an option that was not even available at the other stores we had tried. She also helped us size the lenses to his face, again not an option I was even aware of from the other stores. The downside of Solo Bambini is that it is very expensive and they don't accept VSP. Also, you should definitely ask about frame prices are you are going along, since they are not listed and there can be vast cost differences from one pair to the next. But given that this was our first experience and the insecurities involved, I was happy to pay up for great service and selection.

My two kids got frames + glasses from Solo Bambini. The elderly husband/wife team running the place are very nice and patient with the kids, and did a very good job making them feel like like princes and princesses. Needless to say, my kids looked way-too-cool in school and I was bit-poor. My insurance covered pennies out of dollar since they are out of network for any kind of insurance. Next time, at least I will get the glasses from a VSP participating optometrist. And take a small bite and let kids have cool frames for a few more years. Their frames alone are not too expensive - ranging from $75 to $160 on average, and some way more...

The hidden no return policy

They don't take returns and don't tell you that. I posted a pic of their sign hidden behind a plant of there no return policy.

First pair of glasses!

Such a weird vibe in this store. I've never felt so uncomfortable looking at glasses.

Laura is fantastic - she talked to my child directly and connected with him to pick and choose his glasses.

This female-ran business really has it all--the staff is kind and knowledgeable, the place is clean and well decorated, and Dr. Surh is a master of her craft. Not only was she able to quickly get my prescription updated (and answer any and all questions about my eye health), she was equally great at helping me ease my way into contact lenses. Past optometrists have been reluctant to get me onto contacts because of my astigmatism, but Dr. Surh was flexible and gave me plenty of options (with follow-ups) until I found the perfect lenses. Overall, a great and painless place to keep your eye health in check. And while I haven't purchased frames from them directly I can attest to their wide and stylish selection. So happy to have found this gem!

I've been going here for years, and I want to lead with this: the doctor herself knows her stuff…read more If eye exams were the only thing that mattered, this would be a five-star review and I'd be done typing. But apparently my appointment needed more than a confirmed booking to survive -- it needed backup documentation, a notarized affidavit, and possibly a blood oath. Here's what happened: I booked my annual checkup over a month in advance and got a written confirmation for the date and time. Fast forward to this week, and I get an automated reminder to book an appointment -- for the one I already had. I let them know, and was told, with confidence, that no such appointment existed. So I did what any reasonable person does when accused of hallucinating their own calendar: I forwarded the confirmation email. Turns out I hadn't imagined it. My slot had quietly been given to someone else, and the original booking had apparently never made it onto the calendar, even though they literally said it was confirmed. Rather than asking what would work for me, the doctor herself jumped into the conversation and unilaterally picked a new date and time on my behalf. I explained it might not fit my schedule and asked, reasonably I thought, why my confirmed spot wasn't honored in the first place. That question got a polite apology and a change of subject -- twice. I had seen this lack of explanation once before - a year or two ago, I had ordered a pair of glasses which took much longer to be delivered than promised, but they never provided updates or explained what the problem was. At the time, it was frustrating but I didn't think much of it -- now I am realizing there seems to be a larger problem. To be fair, the doctor did eventually admit that, in terms of the appointment, a quick email search by her staff would've settled the whole thing on day one. Progress, I guess. Bottom line: if you go here, save your confirmation email like it's a winning lottery ticket. The medical care itself is genuinely good -- the left hand just doesn't always know what the right hand booked. And be aware that, if there are any problems, they will just try to gloss it over, without providing transparency or trying to make things truly right.

Alas, the love is gone…read more My first pair of Warby Parker glasses were sunglasses, the day after my LASIK surgery in 2019 in Seattle. I loved them. I lost them. They discontinued them. I bought my second pair of Warby Parkers on vacation on Venice Beach in 2021 (featured in my profile pic!). They were called the Sonia, and black. I loved them. I lost them. They discontinued the black ones. WHY? I bought another color of Sonia, but I don't love them. My next were a pair of reading glasses. I have no idea why the frames were recommended to me. They were very unflattering. I donated them. Next, purchased in 2023 in Burlingame, were my favorite glasses of ALL TIME. Aja in Confetti Tortoise. I had Irlen lenses placed in them. My Irlen color is light pink and they looked AMAZING. I lost them two years later (heartbreak!!) AND THEY ARE DISCONTINUED. This is how much people love these glasses - people are selling them on Etsy and Ebay for $500 to 600. Why on earth would they discontinue them? But this next story is the cherry on the cake. I have ADHD which is why I lose glasses so often. That's on me. But this, this story drives me crazy. In 2025 I paid $$$ for an exam and expensive lenses for reading and computer work. The frames were amazing. Dasia in Ristretto Tortoise. But when I came to pick them up the prescription was wrong. They sent them back to fix. AND THEN EMAILED ME TO TELL ME THEY WERE DISCONTINUED. I asked for a refund.
