Write this review as an update to my original month ago, it is a continued excellent experience as member here as our family continues to come for twice a week for 48 weeks a year. Every aspect from staff to facilities to programming to to member administration have all been tops and perfect. They have all the skills, experience and tools with which to carry out their mission realized every hour of every day. It is such an important instrumental part of the community and we are so lucky to have their organized support therein. First the swimming: the aquatics program is infamously strong for every person of every skill from limited abilities all the way through Master swimmers with a few Olympians along the way. But really it is the everyday swimmer who comes and enjoys this experience with others simply and quietly that makes the quiet community so happy. Aquatics instruction can be variable but is generally very good. As always, the key is communication with the instructor and student both. They are every type of instruction in every type of format for every type of swimmer. There are three pools: warm, less warm, and cool (for the athletic types). If it's always wonderful for having very shallow, one for splash padding and acclimation as well as a infrequently open slide (seemingly just 30 minutes each Friday). Gym is extremely well equipped with every imaginable type of equipment and then some all in good quantities and state of repair. Shout out to the janitorial staff who do the unseen work of keeping everything as great, clean and sanitary as it needs to be. Thank you also to the maintenance and and engineering staff and supporting contractors for keeping his facility as good as we always hope it to be. The front desk does all welcoming individually with the card scans as well as having the green green rings for the under 12 swimmers to indicate they have passed the deep swim test. Member services are complete. The staff is knowledgeable, aided by how the IT system can keep up with all the requests. That system is online and self-service so takes care of most of your needs. Parking is always platiful with a vast space which has never run out of parking even during the annual car show days which takes more than half the lot. The lot is also used for a large number of community events so be sure to watch out for them as some are free to the public, not even only members. Life is better with the GSCYMCAband especially the Somerset Hills location. read more

This Y is located on Mt Airy Rd in Basking Ridge. Our review is based on a visitor perspective. If looking for membership please read some of other reviews because it seems like cost maybe higher than expected. Also yes the parking lot is packed but I haven't seen where there are no spaces. As a visitor this is a good option. We have relatives in the area so we visit from time to time. Sometimes we get a guest pass. Sometimes we pay for a week pass. The cost is reasonable as a visitor. We went to use the gym and play basketball. They expanded the gym and brought in more equipment since I was last here. They have 2 squat racks and 2 half racks (see photo). They also have a green area with boxes for box jumps. They have 3 or 4 benches and 1 incline. They are missing some of the free weight lat pull downs and some other machines but have enough equipment. As for basketball, they do have open gym time but when you check online make sure when you click on one of the locations the website doesn't take you to the wrong location. There are players of varied skill and experience. Overall nice courts and they have large supply of decent balls in a bin at the courts. read more

while watching my 7 year old niece swim at the YMCA pool, I noticed a pool manager harassing one of the life guards on duty. I have never seen a manager be so harsh and so uncaring to one f their own employees. not only was he laughing at him, he tried to do a subtle test after he had already been tested 3 times then continued to yell at him for not seeing the ball when he was watching my niece looking out for her safety and her well being. im not sure if that test is mandatory or what the deal is since I have never been a life guard but I do know that yelling at what looked to be a high school boy is just cruel. my condolences to that boy. read more

This mother's day, they decided to give carnations to all women as they left, wishing them a happy Mother's Day. when offered one, I simply smiled and said oh no thank you I'm not a mother. the woman said that's ok. to which I replied oh ok but no thank you. as I walked away, she loudly said to her coworkers "I'm not going to let the negative energy get to me". is it not ok for a woman to politely say no? what is the purpose of this carnation handing, since most women dont have children (statistically) and even when politely declining are made to feel bad about that? do they do this to all men on Father's Day, or do only women get treated this way? perhaps they should leave a bucket of flowers as a gesture mothers can take instead of making women engage in this weird ritual. please be kind to women, they have to deal with a lot and when someone politely declines something just say ok and move on. read more

UNSAFE CHILD CARE!!!! Be aware! I signed up my 4 year old daughter with the YMCA Somerset Hills Summer Camp program, the whole process has been extremely unorganized, I have called Gabi and left messages since March to inquire about the program details - not once have I got a return call. First day I dropped off my kid, Gabi requested my daughter to carry a backpack with extra clothes, lunches, towel, sun lotion, water bottle, extra shoes. This can be very heavy for a 4 year old especially when the towel is wet after swimming class but we followed what she asked and went to buy a backpack. After summer camp first day, the first thing my daughter told me was some big kid (not a teacher as she stated) stepped on her foot then pushed her at the swimming pool and she proceeded to show me the red marks on top of her foot. She also stated she told the teacher but the teacher had no response. Next morning as I dropped my daughter off with no clear instruction other than a text message "reminder drop off and pick up happen in cars". So I brought my kid to their open tent while Gabi was sitting on the bench and I asked if we need to sign in, she said "just bring her to the table with her class labeled there", I walked over there and the table has no teacher , no adult, when the camp was in an open tent with a parking lot right next to it while cars are coming in and out. I asked a young teacher next table and she stated the teacher for Pre-K kids was away and she wasn't sure where the teacher was and when she would be back and if she would be back. This is the Pre-K class with 3 or 4 year old kids running around. After school today, I noticed my daughter sun glasses were missing, my daughter explained some big kid took her sunglasses, so I called the welcoming center and asked if they could check in lost and found but they transferred me to Gabrielle who was extremely rude. She stated I should not listen to any 4 year old's words, and if she lost the sun glasses, she misplaced them as they have packed her sun glasses, and if my daughter has any red marks on her foot then my daughter or I must be lying because red marks took time to develop (??). I called their Executive Director Eddie, he basically stated he felt confident in their program, also stated except Gabi, all those "teachers" are not teachers and I can't refer them to teachers and should call them counselors. He also stated for the entire summer camp no one is over 18 years old except Gabi. There is no law for them to notify my daughter's injury and they do not have to even if they are aware (in my case, my daughter told the teacher or counselor), he continued on with pretty aggressive tone which I taped our whole conversation that summer camp is not a school, they do not need to follow rules applied to school. He also said my expectation of having someone watching the Pre-K kids at all-time cannot be met, there will be times these kids will have no one watching whether it's when they are in swimming pool or in the open tent and all within the State Law. I'm not sure why having someone watching 3/4 years old at all time are considered unreasonable and I will think most parents will expect this as basic safety. Update: just found out PreK camp with the age group between 2.5 and 4 requires an adult according to NJ public health and safety law. What the Executive Director Ed Norgard stated that it is within the State law to run the PreK camp with staff under 18 years old only is a lie read more

Good luck finding a parking spot. You'll need to get in line to simply scan your card. There are no decent places to hang your coat. You'll have to wait until roudy teens are done using the machines to get onto one. Also note, your monthly membership will cost you $81 as opposed to the $65 it costs in EVERY ymca in the surrounding area. The extra fee was justified when they had a 2nd, satellite location in town. They closed it last month without adjusting their fees. read more

This is the gym of all gyms. In my opinion, the best in NJ. Multiple indoor pools, a gazillion classes all day long. CLEAN like you can't believe. Whats better than doing the elliptical while watching deer munch on grass right in front of you? You want spin class? They offer about 10 a day. Something for everyone. Price is more "luxury gym" than YMCA, but they don't have towels nor a hot tub. There isn't any competition in the area, budget gym or otherwise, but you do have the convenience of multiple YMCA locations scattered around New Jersey. From the outside it looks huge, and it is. There are several different studio spaces for classes of all kinds, three pools, and childcare facilities. Unfortunately the actual space dedicated to workout equipment is on the small side. There is only one squat rack and only two benches. Get rid of a few treadmills for a second rack, please! There is a small space off in the corner where you can deadlift, but other than that you have to position yourself awkwardly among different piece of equipment. On a busy day you could find yourself waiting 15 minutes for the piece of equipment you want, and that's with everyone being courteous and moving quickly/not dilly dallying. The locker rooms are clean and spacious and the lockers themselves look ugly but they are perfectly functional. This location does have a sauna; it's large, clean, and hot. Each locker room also has a separate kid/family changing area. If you swim or can take advantage of the other amenities here, it's well worth the price tag. If you can't make use of any of the additional services or you are seriously into weightlifting, the value won't be there for you. read more

It's getting harder to keep justifying membership here, which is nothing price wise like a typical Y would be. I honestly don't understand how they can be a non profit yet charge quite a bit of money for membership and then charge for extra classes on top of that membership. Lately whenever I make it to the "Wellness Center", the machines are broken, look like they've seen better days, and are filthy. There is no excuse for filthy equipment, especially when there are sooo many staff members meandering around the floor looking for something to do. Hmmm, maybe that's one of the reasons I'm paying a lot. Also, there seems to be an overabundance of pre pubescent herds crowding the equipment when they are obviously not even old enough to make the age requirement. Yeah, I'm getting really tired of the place and they need to make some major changes - soon. read more

So disappointed- moving from upstate NY where I loved my YMCA - huge, clean and new - CrossFit areas, pool, exercise equipment all had dedicated screens where you could "virtually ride your bike in the streets of Paris or many other European destinations - even a library, free coffee, 2 kids jungle room spaces, oh and massage areas which was $59/month - to seeing a the "best YMCA in NJ" offer 1970's style wood paneling with dirty equipment all squeezed together, no perks and try to find a parking spot for $90/month..... The Somerset YMCA is a beautiful facility located just off Rte 287 - for me convenient from both work and home. My main interest is the gym equipment and there is more than adequate variety in cardio and resistance equipment. The free-weight area however is not adequately sized for the number of patrons who use the space. On crowded days it's very difficult to get space and on less crowded times it's possible but still requires some maneuvering. That being said- I enjoy the convenience of the facility and the staff is courteous and helpful. read more

It's my first day join YMCA to swim. As a new member, I read their rules very carefully on their website to follow: make a reservation online before go, wear mask, bring own towel, be there online, etc. As I approach to their door, a lady said due to the weather, they are cleaning the pool and I need to wait outside 20min. I understand and waited in the parking lot for 20min. After 20min, I walked to the door again and another young gentleman stopped me " You can't go inside because of corona virus" I told him that the lady asked me to wait 20min and now it's past 20min. He still insisted I can't go in because of corona virus... I politely asked him why and he responded "It's my first day here as life guard and I can't answer your question" so I am very confused because he let other non-Asian member inside... I asked him again if his manger can help me, and the lady walked out, said "We can't let you in because of the weather..." and I asked is the swimming pool is indoor, she said in summer when they weather changes, they have the right to refuse people inside... but it wasn't even raining at all... and plus the swimming laps are all indoor. I began to feel very upset because I don't understand why the non-Asian member is allowed inside but I am not allowed inside while the people don't allow me inside don't have masks cover their nose. For those of you not familiar with the Somerset Hills YMCA, this is the location commonly referred to as Mt. Airy. This location isn't as convenient for me as the Riverwalk location but I do venture down here when I have some extra time and want to use the sauna. As far as the actual building goes, it is absolutely massive. They have everything: a huge gym, swimming pools, basketball courts, classes and even a cafe. The gym is pretty big and they have a ton of equipment - much more than the Riverwalk location. It seems that is location gets the new equipment before Riverwalk does - I noticed they just got new elliptical machines here. The only minor knock I have on this place is that the locker rooms are pretty dated. Judging by the rest of the building, I would think they would be a little more modern and new. But, it still gets the job done. Also, be warned that on a Saturday this place can get incredibly packed - almost to the point where it is tough to find a parking spot. I guess this is mainly due to the fact that they have so many different activities going on at once. Other than that, this is a very nice gym. read more

This YMCA is terrific and definitely the best in the area! With its recent expansion, the facility is now HUGE. Multiple group exercise rooms, a dance studio, dedicated spinning room, gym, lap pools, family pool with water slides, child care area, rock climbing wall and classrooms are just the tip of the iceberg! The staff and members are all very friendly, creating a true sense of community. Programs are good, and the variety of group exercise classes is impressive for this area. Good value for the price and highly recommended for families, seniors and anyone looking to work out, learn or get connected with others at a place where everyone feels welcome and supported! Most importantly, unlike other for-profit gyms in our area, the YMCA is a non-profit organization that uses its funds to offer a wide range of essential community services to local people from all walks of life, in addition to top-notch workout equipment in a modern facility. Do not leave stuff unattended in the lock rooms. Janitors will steal or take it. The YMCA does little to nothing when people constantly getting paychecks to pocket change stolen during swim practices to open swims. Once it stolen the YMCA doesn't take idea that janitors steals your stuff. Multiple reports of people blaming the janitor for stealing. read more

This YMCA is crowded, expensive and all but the worst part is they don't strictly stop boys from coming to girls locker rooms. The moms bring the kids to swim and they don't want to wait in the line in family locker room so they just bring the boys into the girls locker room. I complained to the staff and asked them to put a sign saying 'no boys allowed' and they won't do it. It is very humiliating and difficult for young girls to shower and change in these locker rooms read more

Dont join this gym if you ever plan on terminating your membership. They make it extremely difficult to end your membership and continue to charge your card months and months after you make it clear you do not want a membership. read more

I am a mother of 2 and have been a resident in Basking Ridge for over 10 years. A member of the YMCA for all of those years, and god has the quality gone down hill these 10 years. But the prices have only gone up! For 6 years now I have paid close to $2,000 a year for my family membership and all the classes and camps for my children. From swim lessons to gymnastics and sports camps I have spent close to $1,000. Trying to sign up for classes is near impossible, the managers never respond to emails or messages, if they do respond they are always rude and curt. In swim lessons the classes are too crowded and teachers are so busy they don't have the time to tell me how my child's doing, The gymnastics teachers and sports coaches are too absorbed in themselves and their own lives too help my children or anyone elses! For what I pay with the unclean facilities, horrible staff, and overall bad atmosphere. My family and I left the YMCA and joined Berkeley Aquatics this past December, since then we have been receiving emails and phone calls from the YMCA to please rejoin. I did hear from a friend who used to work there (moved to lifetime fitness) that membership is down and the YMCA is cutting costs in many bad ways. Including cutting staff, benefits, making classes bigger (much!), charging extra for classes like yoga ($15 per class), etc. If I was still a member with my family the cost for my husband, 2 children, and myself including everything we want would be $2,200! I am so much happier to be at Lifetime Fitness and Berkeley Aquatics for only $1,150 a month! read more
