The pie. And I mean THE PIE. We drove an hour for lunch. Sandwiches & burgers are great. They were already out of coconut cream pie. We tried the strawberry rhubarb and it was amazing. Probably the best strawberry rhubarb I've ever tried. It's sort of a pie/crumble combo. It was so good we went back the following Saturday for breakfast since we confirmed the biscuits & gravy are scratch. And since I was there earlier than last time, I enjoyed a fabulous piece of coconut cream pie. My husband went with strawberry rhubarb again. Service was great both visits. Of note. The owner has experienced some health issues. She's put the business up for sale. It's still open but she's had to cut back on hours. After Labor Day weekend, it will be open M-F only, for breakfast & lunch. If you enjoy small midwestern towns, there's a scenic byways that takes you thru the Flint Hills. I've been wanting to try this place for some time. Unfortunate,y I got there at like 10:45 and they close for breakfast at 10:30. Seems odd since they close at 2. I came upon this place from researching the area prior to my trip. Although I don't really watch morning shows, my interest was piqued when I noticed Sommerset won "Best Pie in America" on Good Morning America. Even Diane Sawyer wanted a pie here for her yacht on Christmas. Getting here from Topeka was somewhat uneventful. You drive through cow pastures and fields. There isn't very much around on the way here. However, I did see various animals (dead or alive) on the road, such as deer, a large rodent-like creature, and a snake. The immediate vicinity reveals that there's not much going on here, save for this institution. The coconut cream pie was what put this spot on the map. I wish I had room for other ones that I might've been interested in, such as the apple crumb pie. However, the coconut cream pie isn't all hype. The crust, while not quite as flavorful as fully buttered crusts, was quite flaky. The two layers of the pie were fantastic. The custard underneath had the right amount of sweetness and it was smooth throughout. The meringue was frothy and smooth. There was enough toasted coconut on top. Service was friendly and cordial. If you find yourself in Topeka, Sommerset is worth a side-trip. read more

Good home cooking, nothing special except pie. The Reuben was good but not much on it, the Reuben at Marie Belle's in Burlington is much better and fresher. The coconut cream pie was okay, they had lots of pies, had chocolate and strawberry rhubarb. The place was full, not enough staff, had to wait about an hour for food. Only place to eat there. It is a bit of a drive from Topeka, but do it anyway. This cafe is right out of the past. You walk in and feel the warmth. Everyone seems to know each other. The restaurant has recently been sold and has a huge remodel. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. The service is outstanding. I am very picky and am happy to say the breakfast was delicious! Everything was hot and well prepared. The coffee was really good and they had toast made from homemade wheat bread. Much has been said about the pie, and they are right. The Coconut cream pie was sweet, crumbly, delicate, but with such a rich coconut flavor! It was expertly balanced and so smooth. We drove from Overland Park to Dover, KS (1.5 Hours) just for this pie - and for the lovely drive with my betrothed, of course. In my research for a daycation, America's best pie 2008 popped up on my radar, and it was too appealing to pass up: $3 massive pie slices! $5 burgers! Small town life! This place has it all. We tried two of our favorite pies, shared a burger and sweet-potato fries, and the grand total was $13! It sounds silly, but the Apple-crumb pie was like taking a bite from a comforting memory; it was the sort of pie that only your granny could put together, like a flavor from the past that can't exist anymore. It was large and rich with a thick, oaty crumb, and perfectly seasoned with cinnamon, tender apples, and maybe a hint of nutmeg. In a single bite, your mind forces a dichotomy yet unknown of the cheap, commercial pie we've all been conditioned to consume, and on the other hand a wonderful bit of magic baked with love. This assuredly was the latter. I had reservations about their burger beforehand, but it was very clean, very meaty, and not too seasoned. It was huge, It was shareable to the conscious eater, and it was under five bucks! Their burger - much like the pies - harks back to a time before commercialization. In Kansas City, we make fancified burgers of pickled onion, garlic-szechwan aioli, with a truffle sploosh on the side. I am sure that if asked, the cooks of Sommerset would remark how unremarkable their burger is. "It's just a good old burger." Well, with perspective of the chic burger of the future dominating everywhere, it's great to find a good, clean, old-fashioned and genuine burger like they used to be. One caveat: The sweet potatoes were just okay, as I could smell the "day-old" grease a little too much, and they had no seasoning. The local diners perhaps are older, and set in their tastes - so changing things may not be for them. But I say, if you cover those sweet potato fries in cinnamon sugar, or light salt, you'd have something there. A pinch of innovation goes a long way. But don't go changin'! You're great just the way you are. read more

Used to be a favorite but my last two visits reflect a slide in quality and service. The latest visit, we waited 40 minutes for a hamburger which was delivered without any lettuce, tomato, pickle or onions, even though we were told to expect such. Additionally, there were no French fries available that day, nor was there any pie (although I understand the reason for that). Here's hoping things get back to normal soon. read more

This is a really fun place located n rural Topeka. I heard about it on line in one of my readings about things to see and do in Kansas and this was one of the restaurants featured in one of those "ten places you must eat at in Kansas" type of things. I'm glad we did. It was a nice drive from Kansas City. I love the General Store type atmosphere. I had a tenderloin which was above average. My friends had patty melts which were very generous sizes. No pie unfortunately. They were sold out for the day. Everyone was pleasant. Sometimes when you go into these small country places, people can come across as unfriendly or stiff sometimes but everyone here was pretty nice. There were also some pretty flower gardens nearby, in people's yards. Snapped a few pics. Reminded me of the little towns in the 60s in SE Kansas. read more

I visited last week. While the food was what you would expect, the service was not. I waitresses for two years In a small restaurant like this. When we arrived it took 10 minutes for us to be greeted by anyone and they were not busy at all. The waitress was young (maybe High school?) and only checked on us once. We had empty drinks for 10 minutes and we almost went up and got them ourselves. The staff were really friendly to people they knew, but wouldn't come and say a word to us. We didn't really feel welcome. I have received more care from a busy Chili's than here. read more

Pie is one of those foods, like fried chicken, that people get very territorial about, but Somerset Hall pie is really something special. Flaky crust and beautiful filling. Nothing soggy. One of the best kept secrets west of Topeka! How did it take nearly 2 years to hear about this gem?? We went over for the 1st/3rd Friday night chicken dinner buffet. Fried chicken, potatoes & gravy, vegetable, mini-salad bar, roll, and dessert. Yum, yum. Dinner starts at 5 pm...but traditionally folks are waiting at their tables for the food to come out at 5 pm....so no need to arrive until 5:30 for the next seating round. There is definitely a "culture" to the regulars. Parking is a premium and there of plenty of signs to tell you where not to park. The place is bigger inside...so don't let the cars scare you away. (And really...would you leave after driving all that way?) You'll be seated at a table that many include additional seats....which may already be filled or will be filled later. The food isn't served family-style...but you are eating family-style. We enjoyed our conversation with our table-mates. You get your plate and head through the line. All-you-can-eat...and sometimes you want to pop up there for a fresh batch of chicken or rolls....so don't fill up on the first trip through. That night, we had an incredible, super large homemade cookie and chocolate/vanilla swirl ice cream delivered to the table. Our recommending-neighbor bragged so much about the coconut cream pie that I got a slice to go for later in the weekend. It was just as tasty the next week. There are different buffet specials on the Friday nights: fried chicken, chicken-fried steak, pork chops, or fish on the 5th Friday. Look online for the specifics. What time is it? Pie time! This place will make you snub all the pies you've ever considered to be the "best". Because, the best is right here! When we got there at 11am most of the pies were already sold out (I'm talking about you, coconut cream). The choices we had did NOT disappoint. Before pie, we wanted lunch. We had the lunch buffet which was fried chicken and all the fixin's. I'm a sucker for home style/comfort food, and honestly, it gives Cracker Barrel a run for it's money. So. Good. After we stuffed our selves with lunch, we were ready for pie. I got the crumble apple pie, warmed, with ice cream. I think it changed my life. It was delicious, and definitely not something you could get anywhere else. My brother got the Banana Creme pie which he also enjoyed. My sister got the peach pie warmed with ice cream, I sampled it and same deal, life changing. I want to go back again for breakfast and get first dibs on pie!! Twice last fall had the pleasure to dine at the Summerset Hall Cafe. Both were enjoyable but particularly the morning breakfast. The first trip was to taste the coconut cream pie and it was delicious. So a second trip was necessary however my evening stay was to late for dining. I parked my old 1986 25' airstream next to the ball field between the two closed schools of Dover. A quiet evening spent setting on the bleachers watching eleven year old girls practice for a up coming tournament quiet enjoyable. The next morning arising and traveling back to the only four way stop in the center of town location of the Summerset Hall cafe. Arriving and setting with the local old farts club then ordered coconut cream pie from the waitress after inquiring if there was some left. She responded yes and the day started out wonderfully order scrambled eggs and sausage bring the pie first please. She complied and I finished almost all of it before the breakfast arrived it was great. As I left I ordered a take out piece for my wife I would see later that day. This used to be a decent place to go. They have cut Corners so bad the food is barely edible and seem to only cater to regulars or locals. If they don't know you it's like you don't exist they bring you your food set it in front of you take your plate when finished and don't say a word no thank you no kiss my ass no nothing. I was hoping for everything homemade like in the good old days. I've had their fried chicken before and its pretty good. But we went there for lunch on a Saturday afternoon, I had a Pork Tender hoping for a good hand breaded one, but they buy them pre-made. It was ok, but nothing special.
