This is possibly the worst mattress on the market. I have had nothing but severe back problems since I got it; (I never had problems before and I am athletic and do yoga) and the only thing that makes the back problems go away is sleeping directly on my wood floor INSTEAD of this $3K mistake. The problem is that the spring system that the are "surprised no one ever thought of before" is a mistake. They way under-spring the area where your hips should go - resulting in the feeling of laying on different levels of support where your hips drop heavily down, but your back is thrust up - putting a lot of strain on your lower back. I finally cut the mattress open to see if I could fix it and discovered the REAL problem. They don't even have springs in the middle cross section of the mattress where your hips are supposed to go! It's just foam. Incredible! After reading all of their material and looking at all of the diagrams of how the mattress should be built - Wow! It is not built like that at all. Basically, one of the most important areas of support, an area that they claim to have focused on - they have completely skipped all support. If you don't understand, let me explain it one more time. The middle line of the mattress, running east west across your body as you are lying down Doesn't have ANY springs. NONE. Just two layers of foam. Then the rest of the mattress HAS springs (plastic ones), and that's why you will never be properly supported. Half of your body has support, and then your hips have no support and it totally tweaks your spine. That's why you are better off on a hard wood floor with a 3" foam topper from Target ($200). And forget about exchange or return. It's more than a $1K "restocking" fee; if the mattress was still new in plastic. And - keep in mind; the company is located in Venice California. All those "positive" responses from 2011, were mostly from local Californians (who I suspect are friends or investors during the company launch). Horrible. Horrible experience sleeping, for your body and dealing with the company. I tried to work directly with Shannon, the owner and she is incredibly resistant to trying to help address these issues in anyway. She is very combative and upon reflection I can only think that this was a money making adventure. Additionally, you know how they talk so much about the mattress being able to "breathe"? Don't fall for it. Now that I have cut it open (at the side) I can see that it's just low quality foam in a cotton shell. They use ALOT of glue (toxic) to glue it all together and there is NO air flow. I'm sure that they would argue that you are paying for their fancy plastic springs; to which I would counter "Ok, well then, why arn't their any springs in the hip area? Can you send me the missing row of springs???" Despicable and Tragic. I think I will have to report this to the Better Business Bureau for false advertising. Go with a company that stands behind their product with a trial period at least. These guys have no prior experience, no expertise and no commitment to the customer. I dout they will be around long. Their product is not expensive because it is innovative. It's expensive because they are a small company with small volume and they make each mattress as it is ordered - which means they have no flexibility or inventory to fix problems. Save your money and your sanity - and most of all; save your back. Run as fast as you can, away from the nice website; because that is all they have to offer. read more

Have been using this mattress since 2011. The foam has giving out, there is no real support and both my husband and I have been having major back pain. This was an expensive mistake, read other bad reviews to understand how this product lacks. read more

My husband who has major back issues and I are always looking for a mattress that would make his back feel better, and not be too hot for me. We found it in Somnium. I had previously given this company a 2* but reduced it to a solo * at this point. Less than 3yrs of owning this bed and there are sags in both sides of my bed. Very sad considering it is really only sleeping one person a night and I am quite regular with rotating the thing. I have been sleeping terrible the last 6-12m, even going to the doctor who performed a sleep study to determine if I was suffering from sleep apnea. I've tried melatonin and other sleep aids - but the pain in my back and shoulders continues regardless... This is what got me thinking. If my shoulders and back are falling asleep and in pain everytime I wake up - then maybe it's the damned mattress! So I switched and found a beautiful, firm organic mattress (for a little less money than somnium even!!!). Now I am finally waking up with no pain or aches and I am not feeling groggy from my sh*tty nights sleep on the somnium!! ***i think it's super important to review the customer service I received from somnium also. The lady who took my original warranty call was rude and sassy. She does everything she can do to blame YOU for the mattress failing. No concern for the customer - only "protecting" her company from issuing a claim. And YES MY BED SITS ON A SOLID PLATFORM. Has since day one. These mattresses are not high-end or quality. Just cause you slap a big price tag on it doesn't make it good. read more

I work in retail so I always have issues with my back. With this being said a mattress is an investment for me. I purchased my Somnium and have noticed that my back feels supported, and I get such deep sleep. I love that they use high density polymer springs that move 360 degrees to support every curve in your body. My hubby is 235 pounds, and I am 112 pounds. Even with the weight disparity we are perfectly supported. I am also a germaphobe and I LOVE that the mattress cover zips right off so that I can wash it in boiling water to kill off all and any dust mites or any other critters. I bought my first King size Somnium mattress in 2006 and my second one a few months later for my guest room. This is by far the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on. It has just the right support where I need it the most, which is my lower back and hip area. I also like the way it "breathes", and all the materials they use. I bought my Somnium Mattress about 3 months ago and I can honestly say the benefits are well worth every penny and more. Whereas before I would wake up stiff with joint pain - now I get out of bed and walk without any stiffness. I thought that this was a side effect of growing older - I had no idea that it had to do with the mattress I was sleeping on all those years. At first, the mattress feels firm - particularly if you are changing up from an older, worn in mattress. But stick with it and your body adjusts. I no longer feel like I'm moving around all night to find a comfortable position - disturbing my sleep. And, the mattress is not overly warm as what has been reported by those who have switched out to some of these new-age advanced techie mattresses. The mattress provides the perfect amount of support and comfort for a good night sleep. I've also suffered from back-pain on and off the past two years.
