If you are REALLY CHEAP this market is for you. The market spans from New York to Florida avenue NE and from Fourth to Sixth streets NE. The market consists of business that are mostly wholesale-oriented, with restaurants, ethnic markets, and institutions as their primary customers, but many of the businesses sell to retail customers. There is also a few places that you can sit down or get food to eat while browsing. The DC Farmers Market building, though privately owned, functions as a public market similar to Eastern Market. There is so much to this market it is a lot to tackle. Go early on a Saturday for the full day experience of visiting the shops and flea market. Also, the market is kinda dirty, smelly and slightly shady -not the yuppie hangout that is Eastern market. I suggest you visit the market with an open mind, a couple of recipes and cash in hand. P.S. Writing this review was like writing a paper for a MA program. I had to do research that consisted of plowing through web pages, newspaper articles and a few maps - in addition to obligatory site visit to see what it was all about with my own two eyes. The flea market is much closer to a swap meet than anything you'd find near Eastern Market. Amidst piles of JUNK (i mean, old beat-up computers and dvds), you can find rare gems. When I was there this weekend I got a pair of earrings and 2 necklaces for $7. Can't beat that! When I was looking for jewellery, a lady nearby showed me some trail mix that she got for around $1 per pound! The prices are astoundingly low. The people are friendly and warm. It is very clearly a fixture of the DC African American community, and I am so glad that I can take part in it.

When I arrived, a kind woman answered all my questions and walked me over to find exactly what I was looking for instead of just pointing me in the right direction. After I paid, a young man walked me to my car and loaded my plants neatly with a bag to keep everything clean. What meant the most to me as someone starting their very first garden is that no one made me feel silly for being a beginner. They were patient, encouraging, and genuinely helpful. That kind of welcoming environment makes all the difference when you're just learning. I will absolutely be back. They're also incredibly informative and helpful. I recently purchased some herbs from Ed's and their team meets you at the entrance to try to guide and assist you. It's a nice touch. Once you move on to the area where the herbs are, other folks will assist you there as well. Additionally, the selection of herbs is superior and more varied than what you'd find in the nearby home stores. Ed's also carries a ton of flowers - fortunately they are around to answer questions because the selection can be overwhelming. Bottom line: there is no better place in the area for landscape that beats Ed's. Even for Christmas trees or herbs.

I mistakenly drove around to the commercial side and had to turn around to get back to the non-commercial area. There were lots of wheeled carts of different sizes. Everything is laid out according to types of plants and their needs - very efficient. I only spoke to three employees, two at some length, and they were so friendly and helpful - big plus for me! I take my business elsewhere if I don't feel welcome. Here's a little oddity that you want to watch out for: GPS kept wanting me to turn onto a side road next to an auto dealership, on the wrong side of Highway 301. (This was coming south from Gambrills/Crofton.) I submitted a correction, but till they fix it be aware the nursery is on the east side of the highway, sort of opposite the auto dealership.
