I purchased two expensive trees (among other plants) a year ago, and one of them died over the winter. I requested a replacement, but the service team stated that I missed the one-yer warranty period by a week. If you charge that much for your product, you should back it up. Not coming through because I missed a one-year window by a week is unfair and shortsighted. One would be better off buying from Lowe's or Home Depot a quarter mile north. What does one receive for the premium pricing? Better plants? Nope, mine died. Better service? Nope, denied replacement because of a week. The value is not there. read more

Let me say that if it hadn't been so hot the day I went, I would have wandered for hours. And when it's cooler, I will definitely be doing that! To say they have everything is probably accurate. I found the plants that I wanted and some ground cover I didn't know I wanted till I saw it, LOL. Prices were very good. I don't have a lot of comparisons, because where I live near Ft. Meade, there aren't many nurseries nearby. This place is definitely worth the drive for me. Parking is ample, but a little tricky. I mistakenly drove around to the commercial side and had to turn around to get back to the non-commercial area. There were lots of wheeled carts of different sizes. Everything is laid out according to types of plants and their needs - very efficient. I only spoke to three employees, two at some length, and they were so friendly and helpful - big plus for me! I take my business elsewhere if I don't feel welcome. Here's a little oddity that you want to watch out for: GPS kept wanting me to turn onto a side road next to an auto dealership, on the wrong side of Highway 301. (This was coming south from Gambrills/Crofton.) I submitted a correction, but till they fix it be aware the nursery is on the east side of the highway, sort of opposite the auto dealership. read more

I love it here! It's my go-to nursery within the DMV area. Plants are reasonably priced, and they have so much variety. I was able to find many items I was looking for, and when I couldn't find something last fall, one member gave me a rough estimate of when they'd be getting it spring. For a nursery, the main thing I care about is the plants, but I know some people also care about customer service. Nurseries, in general, tend to have very kind staff which was also the case here. But, at this nursery, I really liked how they left you alone for the most part unlike other places I've been where I've been bombarded every 10 minutes asking if I needed help. To me, it seems like the staff were kind because they are genuinely kind and friendly, not because they're forced to be. I try to give both good and bad in my reviews, but I don't really have a "bad" thing to say about this place. The only very minor thing I don't like is the fact that the parking lot separates the two sides of the nursery (though I know that there's not much they can do about it now). So, if you want to look at trees and you are currently looking at annuals, you'd have to cross the parking lot. Not a big deal, but if the owner ever sees this review, I think it's something to consider for the future! read more

I love this place! Bought the most beautiful plants here. It's important to know which ones need a lot of sun and which ones need a little more shade. I'm still a novice but I'm learning. All staff members are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I feel so serene each time that I go. Bought a tree last year, unfortunately, it didn't make it and they gave me half off that $300 tree to buy another one. When I showed them the pictures, they determined right away that it lacked sunlight which is why it was inable to prosper and recommended other trees that would do better in that place. We went to Patuxent Nursery for the first time this weekend in search of stones for our backyard, and to start getting ideas for plants around the yard. I was blown away by the size of this place. The stone selection was not as large as we hoped for, but the options they had were beautiful and we think we found the one! In addition, as we were looking around for future gardening ideas, we ended up buying a few plants for now. We couldn't help ourselves! They have so much and for every type of plant person, indoor and outdoor, water and ground, collector and hobbyist. Their layout makes sense and is organized well. A big IVY plant wrapped around my purse and I had a hard time getting it away from her. I wish They could please control this Invasive Species!! Im not coming back here again!! Everything looked OK some things were Beautiful. It seems a little too crowded as the prices are quite High and no one seems to be buying anything. I really enjoy this nursery - lots of variety, helpful staff, and readily marked native plants with a Maryland flag. Prices are more expensive than a big box store, but the selection cannot be compared to a big box store. It's therefore such a disappointment that this nursery carries invasives. I didn't wander the whole nursery, but I saw vinca and English ivy. Both are invasive problems in this area, and it's so disheartening that what is otherwise a solid local nursery is actively contributing to invasives taking over. There wasn't even a warning tag with them that I saw. Would love to update this to 5 stars if they stop carrying them! read more

I visited earlier this year to buy screening/privacy trees, I wasn't thrilled with the inventory. I decided to hold off until spring, thinking there would be a better selection and the trees would be healthier. During my recent visit there were more trees in stock, but their health hasn't changed since my last visit... many of the trees were just bad. Either they're under watered, not recieving adequate sunlight (because of how closely they're placed together), or both. I've felt this way about some of their plant inventory as well. No one wants to buy trees that haven't been properly cared for, so I ultimately decided to just buy elsewhere. read more

Gloves and such for handling plants, house plants, trees, fountains, pots, and a bunch of other things. I got a gorgeous little bonsai from here, and it looks really healthy. All of the workers are super nice, one guy held my plant for me so I could look around and another gave my parents and booklet for landscaping. We are by no means hardcore gardeners. We were looking for a few plants to spruce up our house and atrium. We were able to find a hearty bird of paradise, Bamboo tree and Mexican petunia. They have a great selection of pots and indoor and outdoor plants. I got a few plastic pots which look quite nice/ minimalist. I found staff to be pretty available and helpful when trying to figure out what type of plant would work well for us. Pre-covid it looked like they had some potting classes and whatnot that looked fun to try. read more

We purchased 10 perennial plants, 4 of 1 type and 3 of 2 other types. The plants were in the ground the day after. Within 5 days, 7 of the plants were dead and the other 3 barely surviving so we contacted customer support online. The dismissive response was that the death was our fault due to improper placement, conditions and/or planting based solely upon photos that I provided. Further, as there's no company warranty on perennials, they offered no compensation. This after having spent over $4K for their services over the past few years. We're done. read more

I'm impressed by the variety of annuals and early spring vegetables each year. If you are looking for deer resistant plants or indoor plants normally it can be found here. I happened to see a few irregular pieces laying on the ground behind the big barn (near the entrance)--clearly discards. I inquired, one of the managers gathered 4 pieces. He told me to wait while he figured out the price. After more than 5 minutes he comes back, gets on a computer. After another 5 minutes, he says, that will be $66 dollars. Not believing my ears, I said, "what?" He repeated the same cost. I told him, I had been a long-time customer, but it fell on deaf ears. Good selection of plants it's just hard to buy any if the plants are 50% higher in price then wallmart. Looked at buying a Hosta the pot only had 1 mid mature plant selling at $10. Went to wallmart selling the same plant at $7 with many plants in one pot. Understanding supply and demand with common sense pricing why is a nursery so expensive. If the prices were moderate then the demand due to a nursery would create profit. So it made me take $89 and buy at Walmart. read more

This review is for the indoor plant section and its manager, Justin. The indoor garden section at Patruxent Nursery is one of my favorite places. Justin, the manager of the indoor plants section is so knowledgeable and has a true passion and a wealth of knowledge for indoor plants. I've called several times to ask about specific household plants, and each time, I was directed to Justin. In store, Justin is always so helpful despite how busy the store is. He has his pulse on the beat, knows which plants are in demand, and has curated a wonderful assortment of indoor plants that always fly off the rack. He knows about upcoming shipments so even is a plant is not currently in stock, I've found him very helpful in telling you whether it will be in the future. COVID UPDATE: It's worth mentioning and commending the Patuxent Nursery workers on their consistent mask wearing. I feel very comfortable visiting Patuxent Garden due to the workers wearing masks & hats off to them for consistently masking up as it's not an easy thing to do all day as it can be very HOT in that greenhouse. However, they are truly committed to safety which keeps me a loyal customer. read more

While the selection is enormous, you still get the same customer service as a small mom and pop nursery. Not only did they have exactly what I was looking for but they had it at a very reasonable price compared to the other local nurseries. When I arrived I was amazed at the size of the nursery. They surely have something there for everyone. I didn't have a ton of time to look around so I went to ask for directions from a salesperson. She promptly took me to where I needed to go and pointed out the plant that I was looking for. Overall, I had a great first experience at this nursery. The customer service is unparalleled here. I had stopped by yesterday with my husband to grab a few green babies for a belated Vday treat and I had the best interaction with Joey on the floor. He was so much fun to talk to, spouting some serious plant knowledge I was so thankful for! In all my plant-craze excitement, I accidentally left my Philodendron 'Moonlight' at the counter when I finished checking out. I did not realize until I had driven all the way back to Rockville, so I sent a quick email inquiring if they would check around for it. LO AND BEHOLD, my plant was still there. Emily F., was incredibly helpful, and she put it on hold with customer service at the front and I made it back in today to pick it up. They had a lot of really nice plants and some rare ones but they're extremely pricey. They had a lot of nice very full hanging baskets. Their greenhouse is fully stocked and their employees were really nice! I did get some alocasia and dragon scale but they were covered in mites so beware! I have to report my great disappointment at trying to work with Patuxent Nursery. First, I applied for a contact and response for a landscaping job I wanted done. I did this a couple of days before going directly to the shop (in early March 2019). I was asked to fill out a form to get an estimate of the work I wanted done. I said I'd done that online and the staff insisted I redo it in writing. (What's the point of the website then?) A week or so later I'm contacted to schedule an appointment for the site visit and estimate. (March 23rd). During the appointment I first mentioned landscaping ideas and then a possible tree removal. When the estimate came (April 3rd) it only referenced the tree removal and none of the landscaping requests. I immediately asked for the additional plans costs to be estimated. As of May 15, no estimate for the landscaping has been provided. This is after four email exchanges and a store visit. I asked if I hadn't gotten the estimate because the job was too small (probably about $2-2.5K) and was told that was not the case. I will never use them for anything not even buying plants. My enthusiasm and timing have been squashed. I won't speculate on why this the case. But strongly encourage others to avoid them if this their business model. read more

Best nursery I've ever been to. Customer service is absolutely incredible, they're happy to help + they know their stuff AND my favorite thing? When they don't, they CHECK. No need to act like you know every single detail on every single plant, and having us customers deal with the consequences. Abby helped me pick a rubber tree plant and an aloe plant, and gave me shipping information on when I can come back for a snake plant. She also gave me a ton of information on each, types of planters, and some extra info for my stubborn calethea medallion at home. Even went outside to get me a cart when my plants became too much for my arms. Leanne was super sweet, showed me a rare plant they have coming in, and helped where she could and brought Abby over to me because she was in a different department. There was a gentleman who was walking around loading things, saw I had a rubber tree plant in my cart and just gave me a bunch of helpful information. You can tell these people love their jobs, their coworkers, and genuinely love to help. It's refreshing!! I'm already plotting on a few more plants so I can go back! read more

I was happy to find Patuxent Nursery this season! Their online store has a nice selection with various container sizes to fit most budgets. The website is a bit tricky to navigate and could use an update to be more user friendly, as the search tool is pretty useless and the links to items don't always show all of the items, you have to click around more to find the offerings. Compared to other online nurseries, I find the pricing to be more than reasonable and they offer free shipping at just $100 and coupon code for percent off. For the most part, The plants I have received have looked wonderful and are growing beautifully. My first purchase was 54 Liriope at an amazing price. They arrived healthy, green and at least 9" tall already. I did a second order a few days later, however and those arrived short, sparse and stubby, like they had just been mowed down. I wish it had been consistent. However, the stubbies are starting to thrive! I recently received another order of various shrubs. Although my order stated shipped, I didn't received several items and called the store. I was told that some had not shipped yet as they were not quite ready. Minor inconvenience, as the order should have stated partially shipped and they should have notified me that some items weren't ready rather than me tracking them down. The packing is excellent. Strong, sturdy boxes, clearly labeled fragile, nicely wrapped plants that don't get knocked around in the boxes. Four stars as I do like the selection, the prices and the condition of the plants overall. Minus 1 star because consistency and having to track down my order. Bought a pot, got home, put it on a shelf. No knocks, no breaks...no kids. Couple days later on a Saturday I pick up the pot and start to put some pebbles in the bottom and it comes apart. Now this was clearly a broken pot before I got it that barely held together till I got it home. I took it back the next day and they refused to replace it. Said something about it being almost a week since I bought it. How that matters I don't know. They sold me a busted pot and wouldn't make good on it. We had been good customers there, too. read more

I initially found Garden Goods Direct online, but was hesitant to order due to negative reviews. Instead I wanted to go and pick out my own plants. I called and confirmed that it's the same address as Patuxent Nursery, so I drove up from VA. Prices were great as they were having a 30% off indoor plants, so I got 4 new plants, one of which I have been looking forever for and called all the VA nurseries. However, upon inspection at home with my scope, I found that 2 had mealy bug and spider mites. = ( I sprayed them with a neem oil mixture, and off they went into quarantine. Overall though, I enjoyed visiting Patuxent Nursery. read more
