It's an excellent location in a now-thriving area of Cool Springs. And there's nothing like walking up to the window (no interior dining), ordering one of their 40-something flavors, and eating in the outdoor green space with string lights and crowds of people chitchatting between Handel's and the Little Hats Italian deli. It's a very fun outing! And the employees are very kind and obviously well trained to be professional and inviting! I suppose the only reason for the three-star review is that, with all those creative flavors and tempting menu options, the quality is just mediocre. Not even the salty caramel truffle ice cream which looks so good on paper could win me over. Having the unfair advantage of visiting half of America's top 50 ice cream joints at this point, I have lofty standards. I know rich flavors with tremendous depth when I taste them. And that's just not happening at Handel's. If McDonald's soft serve is worth one star, and Ehrler's in Louisville, Kentucky, is a perfect five, the gold standard in the business, then Handel's is a solid three. It's certainly an enjoyable activity with great customer service and a wonderful ambiance. But don't expect earth shattering ice cream, because that simply won't happen.

Problem with my Parfait was that 3/4 of the dish was brownie, not bad if you're looking for brownie with a small scoop of ice cream. (Yes, their menu says, "Brownie bits, vanilla ice cream, pecans, more brownie bits, salted caramel and hot fudge drizzle, vanilla whipped cream, amarena cherry.") The crust was inconsistent too -- the "wrong" one was burnt, and the replacement was undercooked, doughy, and chewy. On a positive note, I did enjoy my coconut cocktail and The environment was really nice, with a pretty outdoor seating area and even a space for kids to play. The staff is helpful and wants to satisfy your needs. There's almost always a line that moves quickly. The ice cream and sandwich counters are housed in a comfortable, nicely decorated building that also has table and counter seating. Outside are picnic tables with access to shade and a roofed area. On a nice day, the outdoor area is definitely the better option. One downside is parking. Much of the street parking in 12 South has recently been changed to permit-only, which is a huge bummer. There are a few spots directly in front of the shop, but your best bet is probably parking near Sevier Park and walking over. Overall, it was okay, but given the price and the experience, I wouldn't go out of my way to return.
