I am new to the area and was unhappy with a few barber shops nearby before I found Sonny's. This place is excellent! First, and most importantly, Sonny is a fantastic barber. He took the time to understand exactly what I wanted the first time and nails it every time consistently. He's even yelled at me for coming back too soon - what a great sign that he cares about his customers and not just churning out cuts. Secondly, the value and the service are unmatched. The other reviews are right on: Make sure to make an appontment, but not difficult to get a slot. Sonny is friendly, talkative, and efficient. I went here based on the Yelp reviews and the fact that my usual place was booked when I had time. The conversation is a bit like being a character in "The Usual Suspects" and the process is like watching someone do an ice sculpture with a chainsaw (go in and you will see what I mean), but the end result is spectacular. The cut even grew out much better than any other cut I can remember. I think that other reviewers are correct in that once you take away the glitz and fancy atmosphere, it comes down to the skill of the barber. Growing up I would only get my hair cut by Sonny, and for good reason Sonny is the man. Sonny is a one man 3 chair operation right on the outskirts of down town Wilmette. Sonny is friendly, great with kids, very smart, his accent is sometimes hard to understand, but once he cuts your hair he will remember you forever. He is a real people person, but don't freak out if he picks up the phone while he is cutting your hair, he is a popular guy, and really good at what he does. For under $20 you can get your haircut anyway you like with a hot lather neck shave to boot. Sonny takes walk ins but you should call first he has a very popular establishment and is often booked.
