So when we first walk in we get greeted by the hostess and she gives us a pager, doesn't tell us the time. Next the pager rings about 30-35 min later. Not that long. So we get seated upstairs, my guess is that they are barely opening up stairs. it looks filthy, the floor is not swept and the tables around us are dirty. So the waitress comes to take our order, doesn't take long. We get our drinks first and the complimentary chips and guac. We then order, about 20 min passes, nothing. Our meal took around 40-45 min. and it was cold. it felt like it had been sitting there for quite a while. So, then after finishing eating we order some empanadas de platano, about 20 min later. They come, same story: cold. They seem more interested in seating people than actually taking care of the customer. read more

I'm in love with this restaurant! It's different from the rest of the salvadorean restaurants I've visited. Love the decor (not your typical blue walls), they have bars on both floors and tvs everywhere! The pupusas are huge! Totally wasn't expecting that but they were delicious! I really love that the started me with fried tortillas (typical in my country) with guacamole. The ensalada was good and I like that they even included a spoon for the fruit in the drink. It's the last time I go there. Overpriced, felt like I got ripped off. Paid $80 for breakfast for 4 people. Coffee is $3, hot chocolate $4, kids OJ $3. Was charged additional $2 per plate because we substituted something for beans. It's was a substitute not an additional order. Average price for the breakfast plate was $13. I like the taste of the pupusas, reasonable size for the price. I just really don't like the service, they take too long, I personally don't think it's the waitress is the lack of staff. It was one waitress taking care of phone orders, bar area, and the dinning area like about 20 min later another lady came to say, "what can I help you with" which gives me the impression that lady was more of an owner or daughter of the owner. First let me say, this place has always been my favorite place for Salvadorean food, I have been coming here since they opened a location on Avalon and Vernon. When this place in South Gate opened I was stoked! I just left the South Gate location and am extremely disappointed. The mens restroom did not have any paper towels, the womens restroom had no toilet paper, no paper towels or seat covers! The worst thing, there was a roach near our table that we had to kill. I NEVER leave bad reviews, and the fact that I have to leave this one hurts because I LOVE the food here. BUT for a restaurant this is inexcusable. :( read more

5 stars all the way!!! First time here didn't know you need a reservation for the karaoke bar upstairs. One waitress had turned us away and said unfortunately there is no room and they were fully booked. A different waitress Karen was amazing she went upstairs told us to give her a couple minutes literally was walking and moving tables and chairs upstairs just so we can sit down. The food was delicious and the prices are reasonable and the waitresses are very attentive. My only suggestion would be to keep the kitchen later. Came here with the family con antojo de ensalada de frutas. I must say I was disappointed by the service. Horchata was way too sweet. The food was average we got the big fajita platter but it needed more shrimp less chicken but that's not realistic to ask for so whatever. The reason why I give it two stars was the cheese pupusa and the ensalada de Frutas. Everything else was average and the service was HORRENDOUS. We saw our server maybe like twice and had to ask for the check like 4 times. She just wasn't very pleasant. My family and I always eat at Sonsonate in the LA location. We started to come to South Gate because it's closer to home, food is still Good . I finally got to take my Dad out to eat and he said "I don't like coming to sit & eat at this location , the service is not good" . Nonetheless we arrived . We were sat at a small table near the entrance , later we were moved to a bigger table but we had to take our own drinks, plates to the new table with no help from the waitress who moved us . After eating , a random waitress came out * to advise my dad she failed to fully charged him for last weeks take out food *. She messed up and was going to add it to today's bill . My dad is a frequent customer for Take Out here , so she recognized him , I was Shocked. My dad simply did not want to embarrass her so simply laughed and said ok sure go ahead. As we left my dad said "you see I am not going to argue because it was just $10 that I allegedly didn't get charged but just proves my point ".
