His teaching style is clear, hands-on, and practical, focusing on real-life situations to help us feel more confident and prepared. What I loved most is his supportive and encouraging approach--he truly wants every woman to feel strong and safe. I walked away not just with valuable self-defense skills, but also with a newfound sense of empowerment. Highly recommend his classes to anyone looking to build confidence and personal safety! I was the type of person to go into freeze mode and lock up during tough situations, after taking his class, I'm more confident that I will react more quickly with the skills I've acquired. Ladies, don't wait on this one. Take the 4-hour much needed class for every woman!

I'm very glad I did-this class started with something I'd never thought about before, a question about what you'd be willing to do if faced with a situation where you needed to defend yourself physically from an attacker. The question is important because it was followed by learning all the techniques for doing so, and they essentially consist of doing things to another human being that I hope I will never be faced with having to do, to say the least (but look out if you try to attack me!). I have seen changes in my daughters and myself already, for example my oldest told me about her new habit of what she now does when she enters a dark parking garage at night. Thank you, Elliott, for imparting such a wealth of safety information to us.

TL;DR - This is an awesome karate dojo that caters to all ages, backgrounds and physical abilities…read more As a 5'0 Asian American woman, I have always felt safe, valued and empowered when training here. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking to improve mobility, strength, confidence, discipline, or just looking to try a new hobby; you might come out of it having gained so much more (like I did!). --- COVID pushed me to move back home to be closer to family during my senior year of college. It was the most stressful and isolating time of my life, and I was desperate to find community. I used to take karate lessons at ZUltimate Westwood (2005-2011), and reached out to see if any instructors from back then were still around and taking new students. Returning to the Westwood dojo was one of the best decisions of my life. Sensei Jason and Sensei Kim are not only talented martial artists, they are thoughtful educators. They challenge us physically with practical HIT-type workouts like sparring drills, bag work and strength training/conditioning, but also mentally by teaching us how to apply the kenpo forms and techniques we learn to real-life situations. More recently, they've helped me appreciate the more spiritual aspects of 'martial arts': the balance between years of training discipline and respect for tradition, and the unique interpretations that martial artists add to tradition through self-expression. Lessons are set up weekly, either 1-on-1 or with a partner(s). There are also several group classes offered every week for different age ranges (roughly ages 4-6, 7-11, teens and adults classes. There's a filtered water dispenser to keep hydrated, just remember to bring your own water bottle! Always park in the back of the building; there's a free tandem lot, as well as a cheap paid lot right next to that (~$4 for all day parking in some spots, just make sure you read the signs).

Z Ultimate is wonderful! We love our time at the studio! Private lessons are key to our learning!…read more The group classes are a blast!

I took the Women's Basics course after moving to LA and it changed my life! I would sign all of my…read morefriends up for this class if I could. This course teaches essential skills for verbal de-escalation, boundary setting, and physical self-defense, but what really sets it apart is how those skills are ingrained through fully-adrenalized, full-force fight scenarios. That, and the fact that the IMPACT instructors are phenomenal. I'm always impressed by their attentiveness, innovative teaching techniques, and their emphasis on students' safety during physical confrontations. Since taking the Basics course, I've successfully used verbal de-escalation tools twice in real-life situations, including during a frightening incident when a muscular man ran straight at me and blocked my path while I was walking in my neighborhood. I've also applied the skills I've learned in the workplace and most other areas of life. It may sound hyperbolic, but the class really changed how I walk through the world. If you can't commit to the full Basics course, consider taking the Intro Class. It's a great place to start. IMPACT also offers an advanced course and a "Defense Against the Armed Assailant" course for those who have completed the Basics. I took both and highly recommend!

It's not like martial arts, there's not a ton of fancy tricks; it's accessible and practical skills..AND you get to fight an actual person. I didn't just learn skills to defend myself, I learned about what I was actually capable of. It changed my life! Can't recommend enough!
