Friday was an extremely difficult day that was only made bearable by the staff at Sooner Veterinary Hospital. We had to say goodbye to a baby I helped bring into this world and was a part of our family for 12 1/2 years and one of the last babies from our litter of German Shepherds. The staff was so compassionate and allowed us all the time necessary to say goodbye. When it was time they gave our baby every measure of respect and comfort to cross the rainbow bridge. I had a disappointing experience at Sooner Veterinary Hospital in Norman as a new patient. I called that morning to make an appointment for my miniature blue merle Australian Shepherd because I believed she may have injured her leg after jumping off some stairs. Since we had recently relocated to the area, I understood there would be new patient paperwork to complete, so we arrived around 2:10 PM for our 2:30 PM appointment. When checking in, I informed the receptionist that I had accidentally left my dog's medical records at home. Before I could ask whether they could contact her previous veterinarian, the receptionist responded in what I felt was a defensive and rude tone, stating that they would need the records. It left me feeling as though she doubted that my dog had received veterinary care before. I gladly provided the name and location of our previous veterinarian so they could obtain the records. A few minutes later, we were taken to an exam room where a staff member gathered my dog's information, scanned her, and took her temperature. About 20 minutes later, she returned and told me the veterinarian was still busy and would be with us shortly. More than 30 minutes after our scheduled appointment time, the next interaction was not with the veterinarian, but with staff asking us to move to a different room because they needed the larger room for a bigger dog. This was frustrating because we had already been waiting well past our appointment time. Had the veterinarian seen us closer to our scheduled appointment, this would not have been an issue. If the larger room was reserved for larger patients, it would have made more sense to keep us in the lobby until an appropriate room was available. My dog was calm, quiet, and lying beside me the entire time, so being asked to move rooms after such a long wait felt unnecessary and inconsiderate. At that point, I informed the staff member that we would be finding another veterinary facility. What disappointed me further was that no one attempted to address my concerns, ask us to stay, or explain the situation. Instead, we were simply allowed to leave after spending our time waiting without ever being seen by the veterinarian. My pets are family, and the way they are treated matters greatly to me. If this is how new patients are treated, I am actually glad I experienced it at the beginning rather than after investing years into establishing a relationship with the clinic. Overall, I left feeling like we were treated as a lower priority because we were not established patients. First impressions matter, and unfortunately this experience did not make me feel welcomed, valued, or respected as a new client. Based on my experience, I would encourage others to carefully consider their options before choosing this facility. read more

Our boy Rocky was loosing his hair and getting bald patches out of nowhere. We were worried and decided to take him to get checked asap. The staff was wonderful. They reply quickly to emails and are always very informative. I paid 148 for first time visit, spray on medication, eye medication, skin test, and regular health check up. Be careful if you come here & your pet is at the end of there life. I was told if I pay only $200 my dog would be cremated with a bunch of other animals at the same time but if I paid $500 she would be cremated alone & I could get the ashes. What other reason than emotional manipulation would a vet tech say if you pay $200 were burn your best friend in a pile of other pets but... pay $500 & we will cremate your animal with some dignity & respect??? read more

I took my dog in for routine vaccinations as i believed it would be a little less expensive and slightly more trust worthy than the petco clinic. While I was there I was pressured into a heartworm test my dog did not need as she has been on preventative since she was a puppy. I was not informed that blood had to be taken for the test and when I asked if the test was necessary the vet tech was extremely rude and unresponsive to my follow-up questions. They did the test and restrained my small well behaved dog to the point of bursting her blood vessels and causing her entire arm to swell and bruise a dark black red. I was not informed of the results of the heartworm test in office and was also not informed there had been any issues. Later in the day, I found my dog nursing and licking the spot that the bruising bloomed from. Not Happy. I called the office and they wouldn't give me any kind of explanation over the phone. They had me come back in and meet with the office manager, who indeed confirmed it wasn't normal and they were sorry. Later that day my dog began pooping blood. I called again concerned and of course their only solution was to bring her back in. I was then fear mongered into believing that it couldn't be them at fault and they needed to run a $300+ blood test in order to make sure my dog wasn't bleeding internally. Guess what, she wasn't I truly believe the extreme bruising and GI issues were directly related to the stress and mistreatment my dog experienced in this office. Their solution, medications that they also charged me almost $100 that did not work and only made my dog vomit. I am now out $700 and left with a dog that is afraid at the vet who has always loved the vet in past experiences. I am starting to understand why this office is able to see me the same day anytime I call. I will not be returning and I suggest you look elsewhere as well if you care about your animals. read more

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. the veterinarians here will wrongfully vaccinate and misdiagnose your pets. I have two puppies, one of which I brought in to get her final puppy shots since I had just adopted her from the local shelter. They administered the wrong shot to her and gave her a second rabies vaccine, even though they had all her documentation and she was literally WEARING HER RABIES TAG ON HER COLLAR. When I brought this up to them they refunded the shot and said " sorry we have a lot of new people" That is no excuse to administer wrong medication to an animal. If you are allowed to administer shots to a dog you need to be able to read their medical record. My second puppy is an 8 month old who we brought in because he was throwing up and had diarrhea. Doctor Leonard performed a radiograph and told us that my puppy had swallowed a foreign object and would need to get rushed to the ER for surgery. Once we got to the ER the doctors there told us that there was in fact no foreign body at all and he just had an upset stomach, and as a result I had to pay thousands in ER bills because Dr. Leonard is not competent enough to read a radiograph. After trying for weeks to get ahold of the sooner Vet office I was given the excuse that they don't have a radiograph technician at the clinic and that Dr Leonard wasn't certified to read the radiograph. MAYBE IF YOU AREN'T CAPABLE OF PERFORMING A MEDICAL TASK YOU SHOULDN'T DO IT. They also said that it's my "opinion" that he got a misdiagnosis. Well if you said there was a foreign object in him and there wasn't, what's that called? As a result, she misdiagnosed my puppy and never once apologized, the office simply avoided my calls and kept saying they would get back to me and didn't. When they finally did, they took no accountability. So if you love your pet and want them to get actual competent care, please go anywhere else. read more

My dog has NEVER shaken in fear going to a vet until after going here. Incredibly incompetent staff. This vet hospital is rude, staff is inpatient and lack basic social skills. After a few appointments for a simple injection. Waiting time is to the tune of around 30 minutes. Then out comes a grumpy assistant, no hello, attempts to take my dog's leash and without even looking at my dog she begins dragging my dog who is choking to take her to "the back" WITHOUT my consent. I took the leash away and said "no thank you I prefer to be with my dog". Assistant rolls her eyes and moans. We get put in a room and another 10 minutes pass before another Person enters who also does not introduce herself along with the same assistant. This other unknown person (dog walker?, janitor?) is holding the injection that I KNOW is obviously not the correct dose based on the volume in the syringe and the current available doses of this particular medication. I am charged for the incorrect UNDER dose of a highly expensive injection. I know this for a fact. Doubt I'll go back for more really crappy customer service, incompetence and complete disregard for my good natured dog's fear. Placing a very large and already terrified sweet natured animal on a lift table is for the convenience of the veterinarian and staff, has no practical value other than being rushed in order to make a buck. it has been about a year and a half ago that I took my cat to this location. Unfortunately, I had a very bad experience. I came in to have my cat's nails trimmed. It was a farse as I stood by watching the veterinarian back up from my cat and look at him like he didn't know what he was doing. He was supposed to be holding the cat while the assistant trim her nails. (It was late in the day and some of the staff had already left.) He was more skittish than the cat. Additionally, the assistant didn't even get all of her nails trimmed. It was obvious to me that neither one of them knew what they were doing. I have been to other vets since then, and my cat, Raney was very docile and as sweet as she could be. Needless to say, I have not been back. read more

I waited over 3 weeks for my dogs diet food so I finally called and they still do not have it nor did they ever call to advise. I guess prescribing diet food you can only order from a vet really isn't that important to then. The ball was completely dropped. The vet that saw my dog was very condinsending when she saw my dog putting down everything she received from my previous vet plus telling me how it was going to be In a very rude manner. It just felt like a money thing. I was hoping for a connection with a good vet for my baby but I did not find it here. Coming from a large city, I was hoping for better care. My dog is now up for meds and I will be on the search again for exceptable service. Shame on you for letting a patient go so long. read more

Took my dog in with a Hematoma, she had an ear infection $160 and the gave me meds that made her butt bleed a lot of blood all over my bed I thought she was dying took her back in cost me $195 the second visit because of the meds that made her butt bleed. Scheduled surgery for her ear $370 and stressed cutting her claws while she was unconscious because her claws are black and she hates having it done. Pees all over because she gets so stressed out about it. I cannot do it because she freaks out so bad they broke one of her claws off and did a crappy job on the others not what I had in mind while she was completely unconscious im pretty sure they didn't even clip the dew claws. When she went in to get her stitches out cost me another $123. for the the claw they broke and some ear wash not very happy and she had been acting weird since. read more

We took our old and extremely sick cat to Sooner Veterinarian Hospital yesterday. Unfortunately, in the end we had to euthanizing the poor old guy. From the time I called to get an appointment, until the end the staff was OUTSTANDING. Everybody was so kind and caring. From Pat, who so kindly scheduled me an emergency appointment, to the assistant (I'm sorry I can't remember her name) and finally to Dr. Stallings who was so kind and compassionate. She didn't push us to do a lot of unnecessary testing and explained what would need to be done for us to know what exactly what was wrong with him. She suggested we leave him for some preliminary testing and said she would call us with his results. She called us exactly when she said she would and explained in detail his issues. When we went back for the euthanasia, everyone was very comforting. I can't thank the staff enough for their kindness and care they gave our "old man" on his last day of life. THANK YOU!!! I also want to add... you will not find a cleaner, nicer veterinarian office than this one. It is SPOTLESS! Even the baseboards are clean! I cannot say enough about my experiences with this staff! My pup Kahlua is super adventurous and we had a bad gastric episode just days prior to our first puppy check. They worked us in quickly. We completed our puppy shots and most recently she was spayed. They took great care of her and her incision looks flawless. They called to check up on her progress both from the gastric issues and post surgery. Bonus they call her my fur baby! Need a Norman vet... highly recommend! read more

Our first appointment here was great, and they helped us find the right treatment for my dog's dermatitis. The veterinarian was fantastic, and definitely deserves more than 3 stars. The problem came once we needed to continue this treatment, and it mostly involved the staff/clinic-- not the veterinarian! I went to pick up his first round of a new medication, which ended up being $77 for 30 days worth of a 5.4mg dose. As a college student, that is a pretty steep price for me to pay monthly-- however I do understand that certain medications are pricier than others and am of course willing to make sacrifices to keep my dog healthy. Once it was time for a refill, I did some research and found that I could order a 30 day supply of the same medicine online through Chewy, but in a 16mg dose (for a MUCH cheaper price) and would only need to give him 1/4 pill per day, as per the medication's dosage chart. I called the office to check that I could do this and was reassured that if I specified that the dosage would be 1/4 pill per day, it would be approved. I submitted it and was called almost 24 hours later, told that it "unfortunately was going to have to be denied" because I would be "under-dosing" my dog. In need of a second opinion, I set up an appointment with my family's vet in Oklahoma City. Long story short, the vet happily wrote the prescription for the 16mg dose and mentioned that 1/4 pill would be perfectly fine for my dog, as he was right on the border between the 3.6mg and 5.4mg doses that the pill originally comes in due to his weight. I was charged $45 for what essentially is a 4 month supply of medicine, saving me ~$263. Moral of the story: fantastic care for your pet, not always great on your budget (some of which is not completely under their control), and not-so-fantastic customer service. read more

I brought my dog in who is normally very skittish but when she met the first person she was very calm and gently sniffed them and the person was very welcoming. They took her to the back where she was scared and had to be coaxed into going but did well nonetheless and was excited and happy to come back. Another person came in who seemed not as friendly and it made my dog anxious. My dog got taken to the back a total of three times, the last two were with the new person present, and each time she went she would come back more on edge and more reluctant to be around the second person. ( I should throw in I understand she was taken back for testing and that that is a stressful situation for a dog but with her normal vet she did not have this issue. We only came here because it was an emergency and the only place that could get her in same day). I could tell the staff was getting irritated with her for not cooperating. I understand wanting an easy job but when I am up front about her being anxious around people I expect her to get treated like such, not have her boundaries consistently crossed and make her more stressed than when she came in. To see my dog doing EXCEEDINGLY well around people (which is hard for her) to being scared to even be alone around these people was a huge red flag. I won't be coming back. If your animal is anxious/fearful I suggest finding a vet that is gentler and encouraging, not one that gets frustrated because they won't listen/do what they want. Animals need positive reinforcement, they need to know they are safe, and that they can trust who they are with, and from what I can tell my dog did not receive this. I regret leaving my dog alone with the staff which is not something I should feel when going to the vet. read more

I moved to Norman last year and started taking both my golden boys to sooner and have nothing but good things to say! Last Wednesday I called extremely last minute concerned about a lump on my pups nose, they let me come in just minutes before closing and had a look at him- there was a mass of concern they wanted to remove. I'm active duty military and deploying so my schedule was closed after last Friday, they got me in first thing Friday morning and took care of my boy. I am so thankful for the compassion and care sooner Veterinary Hospital has always exhibited, but especially so recently and with a busy schedule!
