Right across from my office this made for a fast trip for lunch. They seemed a bit understaffed but the staff person was so friendly. The food is delicious. Terrible, absolutely awful. We live about 150 miles from there, and when my husband goes to that area, he always brings home sopapillias. They were so heavily salted as well as the refried beans. Doesn't look like much when you pull up. It actually looks like it was once a Jolly Pirate donut place long, long ago. But currently it is the greatest culinary experience your mouth will ever savor. Just ignore what your eyes are telling you, because that is not what would be the greatest visual experience. It is just an average tiny dining area that has a larger patio space. So, yes! ...There IS outdoor seating available. Back to the culinary delight. It has been years since I had a sopapilla (pronounced: Soap-a-pee-yah) or try to sound cool AF and say "Sopa" which doesn't translate to any Sopa at a normal Mexican restaurant which is completely not the same thing. Trust, Fam. For those who haven't heard of one, picture a dough, not too unlike an elephant ear - with a pocket, that is slightly sweet but it envelopes your choice of ground beef, cheese, beans and rice, chicken, seafood, or even the Sopapizza. The latter being like a pizza calzone but way better flavored dough. This is not a stingy place on serving size. You have a choice between: Small, Regular, Large, and Extra Large. If you aren't bringing your A-game appetite with you, then see fit to eat a small or regular. The large is the general size of an 8"-11" pizza folded over but loaded with your meat + cheese, or beans and cheese. Seriously. A Large and an Xtra Large can actually qualify as an appetizer for two at normal restaurants due to the portion size. Believe me or don't, it's your waistline that will be struggling against you pants if you don't have the benefit of elastic waistbanded skinny jeans, just order small and get two if you are wanting more. The woman behind the counter is direct and to the point. They are currently short-handed and BUSY so don't think she is unfriendly, she is making sure everyone gets an accurate order and you get enough salsa and sour cream. She is great and even answered questions because your first time in here, you WILL have questions. Affordable!! Bring all of your family, your friends, a date, your coworkers you like (the ones you don't, screw them) and you all can dine in, dine out on the patio (weather permitting), carry-out/ to-go orders, or hop through the drive thru. Be warned, the drive-thru line is probably pre-order pick-up orders because this is not fast food. It takes maybe 10-15 minutes to make food for two. So there will be a line during busy hours. I LOVE this place! Absolutely amazing. They have very little indoor seating and some outdoor seating. You order at the counter and then they bring the food out to you. They are typically very quick. It can get busy at times with very little seating. This is different than the typical Mexican restaurant. They are known for the sopapilla. Get a sopapilla!!! My favorite is the beef and cheese. My parents always get beef, bean, and cheese. Their nachos are delicious. Just cheese and jalapeños. You must get a sopapilla! Whatever you want in it! Their salsa is also SO SO SO good! Ordered Chicken con queso. i was told i would get sauce and beans on my burrito - i got shredded cheese and chicken, thats it! Typically, I love Sopapilla Express. It's been a favorite of mine since I was a small child. This evening, though, I called to place an order, and I could not get through to an employee for over 15 minutes - the phone was either ringing busy or it just rang & rang and no one answered each time. Once I finally spoke to someone, they put me on hold for another 20 minutes and never came back to the phone. I finally hung up and decided to order from somewhere else. I just tried this place for the first time. I'm a long time customer of La Paloma in Heath, which from my understanding is owned by the same family. This location did not disappoint. It's simple and small with only a handful of booths. However, two of them are large and could seat 6-8 people each, so it's still easy to eat in with a group. You order at the counter, and they bring it to you. Unlike La Paloma where it's table service. These sopapillas are hands down the best ever. I've tried them from other places and they cannot compare. My favorites here are the chicken and cheese (always moist white meat chicken), the rice, and the buckeye dessert sopapilla. This is the only place I have found Sopapillas in the MidWest (or pretty much anywhere!) Sopapillas, similar to Native American fry bread, are called "the doughnut of the Southwest." I have never encountered anything quite like it anywhere else in the world. I have never seen a sopapilla on the dinner menu at a Mexican or Latin restaurant (except as a dessert... and then it is still an empty sopapilla drizzled with honey). This Sopapilla Express location (and it's sister restaurants La Paloma) have both the Tex-mex dessert style (a variety of fillings to choose from), AND the North New Mexican savory style (filled with any combo of beef, chicken, bean, cheese) served with lettuce tomato and hot sauce. I love both. Of course, you are in central Ohio, in a Midwestern town with a 93% Caucasian population. Do not expect the food to be served spicy. However, it is consistently delicious! Every time I road trip to visit family in Cleveland, I have to make a stop at one of the Newark or Mount Vernon locations of La Paloma or Sopapilla Express to pick some up for my family who miss this taste so much. I pick them up, drive 3 more hours, and my family still devours the Sopapillas when they arrive. I get a small bean and cheese, plus a lemon dessert sopapillla. This little spot is a piece of heaven. It's unassuming, cheap, and the food is AMAZING. Whenever I have a week off to visit my hometown, I stop here for lunch 4 out of 5 days; that isn't a hyperbole. Items you should try: start at the top of the menu and work your way down. Really though, try the chicken and cheese sopapilla, beef and cheese, bean, beef and cheese. Those are my top 3. Another thing of note is that they make their salsa in house and is well worth trying in gratuitous amounts. If you have any more capacity to consume more, order a desert sopapilla and savor the blissful decadence. Like I mentioned before, the building is unassuming, the decor is minimal, and the restrooms are clean. There is a drive-up window that you can pick-up your to-go orders or make new ones. If you want a to-go order, I recommend that you call ahead. Also, they're closed on Sunday's and Monday's. PS. Vernon and extended to Newark) really brought something special to this area. Based upon the many stellar reviews posted here on Yelp, we were excited to give Sopapilla Express a try. We were actually hoping Sopapilla Express would be that awesome ethnic hole-in-the-wall with exquisite food. Just having moved to Newark, we're on the hunt for good food. We were very disappointed. We ordered a small nachos, small chicken and cheese, and small beef and cheese. If you're plain hungry and looking for something other than the loaded potato bites on Arby's value meal, then maybe this'll hit the spot. The nachos were nothing more than corn tortilla chips, smothered in cheddar cheese, and showered with little bits of jalapeno. This is easily replicated at home and not at all special. The savory sopapillas are okay. The dough is crispy yet soft and flaky. The fillings are very under seasoned. We reached for the salsa to help give some heat, but the salsa tasted like watered down pace picante. The beef and cheese tastes a little like hamburger helper cheeseburger filling. By far, the best part of the meal was the sweet sopapillas. The apple filling was actually really nice. it had big chunks of apple, and the glaze was not cloyingly sweet. The ice cream was nice and dense. It pretty much resembles an apple dumpling but with a softer, less sweet, crust. The plain w/ honey was pretty good if you're looking for plain carbs. I loved that we found this place! We're from San Francisco and never find 'good' quick dining anywhere in Ohio! This place was a blessing, good home-cooked Mexican style food, reminiscent of the taquerias that we have back in California. Simply the best money I spent on food in the Newark area, and it's cheap. Very fresh food, high quality food, better than anything you'll get at the chain restaurants in the area. I totally agree with what the other two reviewers said, so no need for me to repeat.
