Walking in the Chelsea neighborhood where our rental apartment is located, we decided to try Sophie's. This is definately a meat eaters restaurant, as they have really wonderful aged prime English beef. Hubby Tom ordered the Rib eye steak, with a side of macaroni and cheese. I tasted it, and it was absolutely delicious, as was the mac and cheese. I ordered the roasted English Cod, on a bed of carrots and cannellini beans. That was a yummy dish as well. The cod was very fresh, and roasted perfectly. We shared the side salad of mixed greens, and it was very fresh, with a dressing of some sort of lemon vinegarette, just lovely for sure. The place was hopping, and the service was still very good. Prices seem decent to me, although we lose about $.30 cents on every dollar, but overall I found this to be a great restaurant and would come back again next year when in Chelsea. read more

Casual eatery that has above average chow. My £25 rib eye steak (10 ounces) was delicious, tender & flavorful. Sides of mixed lettuce salad and macaroni cheese were also soul satisfyingly good. Portions were also generous given the reasonable prices. If you Yelp check in an instant credit for a free beer or house wine opens. The house red wine was god awful. Some Spanish swill. A step above Sizzler (a terrible US chain), ha ok I admit it's not that bad. The ambiance is stylish and the chap serving drinks at the bar was cool. However, when we sat down for our meal things went south in a hurry. First off there was no bread, it was fresh out. Oh and most of the fish dishes were out too, sorry. "Two of you want the tuna?" Yeah, only have one it's Sunday after all. The two ladies in our party had to arm wrestle to see who was most deserving of the last precious tuna, I figured survival of the fittest was the only fair way to decide (if you pardon the pun). I myself had the ribeye. It was a thinner cut than we cowboys typically get in the States, and they either didn't understand "medium rare" or just heard "rare". My steak practically walked off the plate, but I caught it and put it in my belly. Not particularly flavorful, but I kept it down and the calories haven been successfully absorbed. Your mouth should be watering not your eyes when you see what you paid, and we were several hundred. My only regret was just paying and leaving. Should have said something, the guys in back know they are serving below cuts. The hamburger looked good at table nearby, but didn't taste it, just avoid the steaks and maybe get the chicken, at a steakhouse. It seems to be the sort of place people flock to for the atmosphere with the food being secondary. Call me old-fashioned, but ... Well, what can I say, my first Yelp Elite Event and what a place to have it Things started off with a lovely cocktail,I had the Kiiki Mojito (Rum, raspberry and mint) followed by a varied selection of starters (mackerel pate, gazpacho, prawn cocktail and the biggest artichoke heart ice ever seen). For mains we had the Porterhouse (medium) and Chateaubriand (medium rare)?with a varied selection of sides including fries, onion rings, salads, jackets and greens. Easily the best steak i have had for a long time. Staff really attentive and informative giving us a potted history of Sophie and her husband and the thinking behind the concept. After a decent break we were presents with the desert menu from which we selected Creme Brûlée, Chocolate Browny, Eaton Mess and proper American style cheesecake. This place was very good for cocktails. However this was up until the free offer on Yelp of a free glass of wine or beer. I chose the free house wine came in a short stubby wine glass which looked like what you would get in a staff canteen. This was topped off with it having thick sides, which a wine expert would know makes it harder to taste the wine. Outside this the service was first class and friendly. The waitresses were good, it also cannot be a coincidence that they were all good looking. The upselling of ordering greater quantities gave us the right amount and so was honestly done. Atmosphere is cool, food is decent although some of the types of meat were very fatty. A decent place and the meat had big portions, although if I am going to be critical some types were either quite fatty, or the lean types were a bit tasteless. Perhaps a tastier marinade would help? The salads were lovely and fresh. The chips were fried okay, but not the total magic of perfectly crispy on the outside to seal the flavour in and totally soft on the inside. The deserts have presentation that was good so I just have to forgive, although the ingredients did taste a bit like they came from a supermarket. Also the Eton Mess was meringue with strawberries and probably supermarket strawberry sauce which I believe is not the full Eton Mess recipe. The problem is that with alcohol and service it comes to over £65 per head. It would be good value at 2/3rds the price as the drinks were good, but the food not up to those prices. As a result it is not a place I would choose to take people when there is so much first class food available elsewhere at a lower price. read more

The service is relaxed and friendly, the ambience is nice, the food is reasonably priced and (most importantl) the red meat is excellent. We decided to try Sophie's for a quick bite before seeing a flick across the road. We were able to walk in off the street and get a table straight away. It had a decent atmosphere, relaxed service, and instead of bread, they brought out free sausage, which I am never going to knock back. The ribeye steak was tasty, which is a good start given it's a steakhouse. However the accompaniments and sides were disappointing. And unfortunately the glass of pinot gris I had was pretty lacklustre as well for the price - but I may have ordered badly there (I suppose it's my own fault for not ordering red with steak). While Sophie's didn't stand out from the steakhouse herd for me, I think it's still a good choice for a relaxed and (I suspect) reliable dinner out if you're in the neighbourhood. read more

I popped in here at the right time (a weekday, after 10pm. Also available Mon-Fri 12-7pm) to take advantage of their steak express menu (approx £10 for one course, £13 for two and £16 for three) and I was pretty happy with it. I can't comment on the value or quality of the their a la carte menu, other than a friend's mushroom and goat cheese which I tried and was excellent. The food and drink I had here all fell in an above-average category, helped by the good prices: the medium-rare steak, the chips, the huge cheesecake dessert and the glass of cabernet sauvignon. Not spectacular, but good for the prices charged. Service was friendly and quick, and the kitchen is open until 11:45pm - very unusual and certainly welcome. I had the best time here last Saturday night . it was a 45 minute wait for a table which is fair enough. The bar has no room for moving or drinking, so I have to remind myself about the lack of personal space in London and we went to the nearest pub to wait for our table. On return with drinks from nearest pub ssshhhh. I had the best steak ive had in a year of living here and an enormous baked potatoe with a blue cheese salad on the side. I've had to round down because it's probably a little over priced for what it is. 27 GBP for a steak ($47), and it was really average...not bad, but not a $47 steak. Good steak and good wine. We ordered the Chateaubriand which was yummy. I had the goat cheese mushroom appetizer which was so good, as well as the sides we had (onion rings, mashed potatoes). Only thing that was strange is 1) they told us they had Guinness on tap and then they told us the tap broke. 2) they ran out of the Malbec we were drinking. What did you do tonight, Lauren? Oh me? I just dined with Prince Harry, nothing big... Okay, okay maybe I didn't dine with Prince Harry exactly but he was sitting at the next table! It was actually really nice that he was able to dine without anyone bothering him, though the staff we notably more active with making sure all service was going to plan. I love the simple, warm decor here with the exposed brick wall, candlelight and the bare low watt bulbs hanging from the ceiling. We ordered the 10oz fillet of beef and the Welsh lamb steak with chips, creamed spinach and red skin mash. The fillet was trimmed of fat and 3 inches thick of perfectly cooked beef. The lamb steak came with a lovely red berry jus and was perfectly cooked as well but a little fatty. The lamb tasted more like beef than lamb but it was still scrumptious. The chips and mash were delish but the creamed spinach didn't have much flavour. We also watched another table being served a round of prawn cocktails that would make anybody smile. We were a bit too full for dessert but the selection was so devine it was hard to turn away. Next time I come back I will definately try the sticky toffee pudding. We only had soft drinks but I have been here for cocktails before and they are top notch. Our waitress was outgoing and really enthusiastic when telling us about the specials. She was always around if we needed her, even though the place was full. She did hang over our shoulders when we paid the bill and watched as we typed in the tip, which was a bit weird but whatever. I must first note that I'm reviewing this having been at a yelp elite event here (yes, I know, long time to review there, Hannah!) so things always taste better without having to pay full whack! Starters, prawn cocktail gazpacho, artichoke heart with dip, mackerel pate and calamari. Oh they were good! The prawn cocktail was done in it's classic form, and tasty, gazpacho isn't to my taste, so i'm not so good on that, the mackerel pate was wonderful and smooth, and the artichoke heart was enormous! The calamari was also good, but I have had some seriously amazing calamari in the past. Then came out the amazing slabs of meat. Porterhouse and Chateaubriand steaks. I preferred the chateaubriand, probably because I prefer my meat on the rare side. You wouldn't really want to drown them in peppercorn sauce or anything, as they were very juicy alone, but their béarnaise was excellently smooth. The fries, onion rings, salads, jackets, and greens surrounded them. The salads in particular were a hit for me, but i far preferred the ranch which wasn't so heavily dressed, which I can find quite off-putting , the jackets were fairly standard in looks, so I didn't go for them as I like a seriously crispy skin, but there was definitely a good range on offer. Puddings had creme brûlée, eton mess, white chocolate baked american cheesecake, ad chocolate brownie. They were all excellent, and easily second behind perfect homemade versions I've had. I came here because of their lunch deal of steak, chips and wine for a tenner. Sounds like a bargain but you do get what you pay for. They brought us sliced smoked sausage whilst we waited, which was a nice surprise. The atmosphere here was lovely; it's warm and airy with a rustic decor. It's somewhere I would enjoy coming for casual drinks. The steak was great for the price, I was honestly impressed, though the generic sauce that it comes with was a bit bland. Their own BBQ sauce is good though. Normally I'd get a peppercorn sauce for steak, but again, it was their lunch deal. The chips were alright, though they came shortly after the steak, which was a bit bizarre. The house wine is foul, I'm sure it would make great salad dressing. If you're coming here for the free glass of house wine, then don't bother - it's undrinkable. Again, you get what you pay for. Though just because it's cheap doesn't mean it needs to taste cheap. All in all the experience was nothing special; though I went for a cheap deal, I want to try their cocktails and proper meal to see what they're really about. When visiting my brother in London we went here with a group of his college mates. Lucky for us one of the girls was friendly with the server so he set aside a table for us, so no waiting. Before the meal we ordered about 3 bottles of wine and they brought out salami for us to snack on [that was so delicious]. We also ordered onion rings which were really good as well. I had a rib eye, my brother had the filet, and a few people had the tuna. Everyone was really satisfied with our entree. For dessert I had the chocolate tart. The tart was pretty tasty, but my favorite was the huge raspberries that topped it. Whenever I make my way back to London I'm definitely coming back to Sophie's. read more

Having only been here once for brunch, and given the fact that I don't eat steak, it may be unfair to fully review Sophie's but I was fairly disappointed in every dish I tried. I had high expectation of this place, and perhaps that's why I was let down, but the food just wasn't good. The house salad is a coleslaw - okay, interesting choice. It was very bland blah, had a few bites then pushed it aside. The swordfish skewers were dry, small and boring and the "salsa" it comes with was a few small pieces of tomato and onion. Unimpressed. The side of creamed spinach had no taste, was very small, and blah. My friend had the lobster avocado club which sounds excellent, but in reality is also very bland. And the bloody Mary's were obviously made with an artificial mix and were far too intense/spicy. I do like the decor though -- the raw lights are cool, and the train style coat racks are cool, if unpractical. The crowd was chic and the place seems to always be busy, but I don't think I'll be coming back. Oh, and it was FREEZING in there, what's up with that? read more

Good for steaks but nothing else. Don't blame me as a Vegetarian walking into a steak house but there is more a restaurant specialized in steaks should offer than a piece of meat on your plate. So far, my Fish'n Chips (yes, as a ovo-lacto-pescarian I do eat fish) were dreadful for its price! Even the Fish'n Chips in front of the Tower will do better (and for less money as well)! What a disappointment... My friends shepperd's pie was ok (ridiculous amount of beans as side dish - it seemed to be more garment as anything else) and my other friends steak was quite good. Nice furniture, good location, a bit fancy with toffee-nosed customers (with all their attributes). Anyway: Good service but all in all to pricey (yes, I do know: that's Chelsea) and for its quality I would advise to spend the money elsewhere. Sophie's can't be faulted on its steaks which are beautifully tender and cooked perfectly. In fact you probably won't need much else than chips and meat. The veg aren't amazing, but, let's be honest, you don't go to a Steakhouse for the greens. My only criticism would be that, because you can't book you should be prepared to be waiting for a table in the often packed and cramped bar area. If you enjoy rubbing pashmina-ed shoulders with the Chelsea typs this shouldn't be too much for you. But if your teeth are set on edge by horsey women shouting "Wiglet! I haven't seen you since Mummy's last wedding / boarding school / Annabelle's!" Then you won't enjoy the wait. But rest assured, the meat makes up for it. There is a bigger one in Covent Garden, but it suffers from being too big and a little soulless. Go for the Monday steak club where you can get a 28oz Porterhouse or a 24oz Cote de Boeuf for £25. read more

Note: I'm reviewing this restaurant as part of a Yelp Elite Event-- so I ended up with a lot of very tasty food and a lot of wonderful drinks! I would probably give this place 4.5 stars if I could as there are a few food things I would change, but overall the experience was magnificent. I didn't have any of the starters, but I heard the prawn cocktail and calamari were both wonderful. Instead, I went straight onto the Porterhouse and Chateaubriand steaks-- which were both amazing and done between medium rare and medium. These were served with horseradish and bearnaise sauces, alongside fries, onion rings, and both blue cheese and ranch salads. I didn't think the blue cheese salad dressing was that flavourful, but the ranch was quite nice! The onion rings were basically perfect- the crisp on them was divine. I'm very fussy about my meat, and I must say that the steaks themselves were very flavourful. I don't think they require any sauce, though the horseradish was pleasant for a bit of a kick. The main thing I would have changed with the steaks would be to improve the rendering of the fat (or lack thereof in many of the pieces I tried). A bit of the steaks were surprisingly tough as well, leaving some of my table with wonderfully tender meat and others with very tough meat. I was fortunate to be in the former group, which left me with the most flavoursome meat I've had in quite a long time. I can't imagine having a whole steak to myself-- I'd definitely recommend sharing one. Dessert was wonderful, featuring the best cheesecake I've ever had (white chocolate), as well as a very nice chocolate brownie, eton mess, and my own customised Rum-Raisin ice cream hardshake with Bourbon. The latter was divine, and the entire table was so pleased with the cheesecake that we had to order a second. In all honesty, however, the real highlight of my meal were the drinks. The porn star and the chili martini are both two of the best drinks I've had in all of London. The urban womaniser was wonderfully refreshing. The hardshake they customised for me was out of this world. The prices for drinks are a bit steep, but they are certainly very generous with the alcohol. Staff were lovely and attentive, bartenders were delightfully talkative about the artistry of the drinks they were creating-- everything was just splendid! I can't wait to go back and try the artichoke appetiser, the other steaks, and more of their wonderful desserts! Definitely come here, even if it's just to have a quick drink! read more

I first visited sophies steakhouse on fulham road and i loved it, so i was hping for the same when i saw they had opened in covent garden. however it wasnt quite the same it was much bigger and more focussed towards the food that is only average and the local, welcoming chilled atmosphere had been lost. instead its a massive haunt for theatre groups in the eraly eveing and tourists through the day. I felt quite sad after my visit here as the one in fulham is so much nicer. The building though is very nice and good service its just a shame it now seems like every other bar/resturant in central london read more

I have been to Sophie's a few times in the last five or so years. It's a Fulham institution - drinks are great, service is always fantastic and the restaurant itself is lovely. For a restaurant with 'Steakhouse' in the name, I would have expected my £25 fillet steak to be cooked exactly as I specified last weekend. Sadly, it wasn't to be. I asked for it medium and when it arrived it was perfectly, sizzingly brown on the outside. When I cut into it though, the blood began to ooze out and I saw that apart from a pink layer around the outside - the fillet was mostly raw and bloody. Not medium. Like I ordered. Sophie's had just forced me into being a fussy customer who returned their steak. It came back after a few minutes and I chose to believe that the steak had no special ingredients added to it by the chef. But now it was well done and dry and I didn't enjoy any bite of it. Sophie's steakhouse is located on the Fulham Road, near many other bars and restaurants. The steak is very good, and so is the fish pie. The cocktails are superbly strong - try a margarita: two will be enough! The tables are quite close together, so there is not a lot of privacy. However, whilst you wait for your table you can have a drink in the little bar (which is usually packed) that serves excellent drinks. Nice, young crowd of people. read more

For a 5 star meal, my pick would be calamari for starters, courgette for side and the porterhouse but share it with a friend. Dining while traveling alone is always difficult, but Sophie's made my dinning experience perfect. I decided on an earlier dinner and was glad I did since it was starting to fill up when I left. I decided on the calamari for starters and within moments it was in my table, the table service was impeccable, fast and efficient. Because I just had to try the steak I decided on a nice 6oz Sirloin. Cooked perfect to my medium rare likening. Their in house sauce was a great condiment to a really tasty meat. As the saying goes if you don't finish your meat, you can't have any pudding ;) so I finished it all off with some pudding which I have to say was one of the best presented plates I've ever seen!! So the cost... Yes it's expensive.. but only if you keep converting everything back to USD.. Stop doing that!! A vacation should be enjoyed not penny picked!! Boy o boy is this a great place! Came here for an event and had a fabulous time with so much delicious food and good drinks and most of all the friendliest staff. To start we shared the artichoke (which was a little weird), smoked mackerel pate and beef salad. All were ok however none of the starters particularly tickled my fancy. The mains however were amazing - we shared tbone and sirloin that came with gravy and peppercorn sauce. So good! T bone was medium rare and chateaubriand rare - both cooked to perfection! With tonnes of aides. Their onion rings are great, chips not bad and salads pretty good but the best sides were the Parmesan courgettes and the mint broad bean salad - so good with the steaks! A bottle of house red washed it all down plus a lovely Apple cocktail to start. To finish we shared some desserts and I can highly recommend the cheesecake and brownie. Eton mess and the creme brûlée were good but nothing to shout about. Highly recommend this place for a big meal out with a group of people! read more

Good steaks, but that's about it. We waited 25 mins for drinks, another 30+ for food, only to be served inedible / undercooked fish & chips (along with 2 good steaks). I get that it's a steak restaurant, but don't offer other dishes if you can't cook them. After contacting Sophie's to express our thoughts, we were told there was only one member of staff at the bar, who was in training, the chefs were told about the fish and chips, but the cooking temperature was satisfactory, and we'd be sent vouchers as an 'apology'. These never arrived, despite chasing. Standards have slipped. We won't be going back. read more

The dangerousness of a friday night on vacation, cocktails, red meat, wine, butter it's a potent and excellent recipe for an evening. Sophie's is pretty good, kindof overpriced but quite solid cocktails and way too crowded bar area. As a yank I can say that the steaks are smaller than your average steakhouse in the colonies, but my compatriots felt it was in line with London. Well prepared flavorful beef, sides that cut to the chase of what you want and a reasonable wine selection. I do take offense at the wine glasses which weren't up to snuff. Décor is fine in that generic upscale with minor flair sort of way and the service was quite respectable, the check however did some damage. read more

For great steaks I recommend spending a bit more and trying Goodman's or going cheaper with Big Easy. Would not go back there... read more

Perhaps I've only been at peak times, but Sophie's is always packed. And they don't take reservations, which makes the tiny waiting bar area more packed. Annoyingly, they also seat people - singles or couples - in the bar area for their proper meal (this is presumably because the tables pleasantly face the few large windows...and perhaps it is quite pleasant when there aren't a stack of hungry people hovering in an adjacent mass...) That said, the food at Sophie's is solid. It's hearty Anglicized American food, served accordingly in hearty portions, and I think their steaks are some of the best in London (the burgers less so). The menu is extensive enough to please anyone, particularly families. The staff is good as well. Weirdly, four of us decided to share an entire roast chicken with garlic mayo as a starter and one of my friends wanted his eggs benedict on the same plate as his "in between rare and medium rare" steak (it was a late lunch and we were hungover, ok?) - the waitress didn't blink and brought out everything quickly and exactly as ordered. Nice touch note: the small bowl of chopped salami (or some sort of Italian sausage) they bring to each table. read more

I am a big big fan of Sophie's and have been going since the restaurant opened. Always has great atmosphere whether for lunch or dinner, it has a wide range of steaks and also plenty of salads and fish for vegetarians. The portions are well sized and well-priced, I have enjoyed many a good evening here, and they never rush you to leave your table, and the service is always friendly, especially considering how packed out this restaurant seems to get every evening. There is only one down side they have a strict no-booking rule, so you often end up waiting at the bar for a bit longer than expected (it can be anything up to an hour on weekends) which can be frustrating and I have gone elsewhere. They have recently opened a branch in Covent Garden which I'm looking forward to trying. read more

There is always a wait for tables uring which you can always enjoy a cocktail or pint at the bar...its a packed, lively Chelsea linchpin offering great burgers and stunning steaks....With plenty of polished wood and trendy light fixtures, Sophie's certainly has the look of a hip, South Kensington steakhouse. The waiting staff all seem good looking, tall and slim, while the clientele are a mix of old Kensington money and new American cash. The chill-out music is kept to a low repetitive beat and, in general, the place pushes all the right buttons. Tables are a bit too close together, meaning it's impossible not to hear the neighbouring party's conversation about their hedge fund or their kid's private tutor, but the food is excellent, straightforward cooking. Steaks are big and juicy: good cuts of meat well cooked. The peppered steak salad seems to be one of the most popular dishes; it comes with lots of fresh greens and beautifully grilled slices of beef.
