First time going , I haven't had the best experiences with my attempts to find a loc stylist who really makes me feel good with my hair , I didn't have the best experience , as my time is important to me and I was waiting in the cold for almost an hr . However the owner ,and other stylist was apologetic. I got a wash and trim and palm twist , my hair is short , the style was ok . Im big on energy and because I liked theirs I'm going to give it another try and maybe can change my perspective . I've been coming here to get my hair retwisted, never had an issues - Fajr always did a great job washing and retwisting. But If you're considering color - RUN! I spent 4 hours in the salon and walked out looking nothing like what I requested. I asked for an ombré, with natural dark brown at the root transitioning to a dark auburn color I already had in my hair. The color ended up being jet black, uneven, with no ombré transition. When I pointed out it was uneven (one side higher than the other), she offered to fix it but was out of dye and said that I could come back next week to get it fixed. I told her I had an event the next day and needed it fixed ASAP, so she sent the receptionist to go buy some more. Eventually, she did even it out, but the coloring is atrocious. The top is an unnatural looking black and did not transition/blend to my existing color. I'm spending my weekend trying to lift the color and fix the botched job. So if you're looking for color, it's worth seeking out a trained colorist! read more

I was charged a full late fee, but I was never told about the late fee at all. I just learned about the late fee, and my daughter has been going to this salon for a few years. I really don't like a lot of people in my hair. And moreover, I don't like going a whole lot of places to get my hair done. Like a lot of poeple, I like ONE person, who really knows and understands MY hair to care for it if I can't. I met Fajr when she worked at Tendrils downtown and at that point she cut my hair so that I could have an easier go when my daughter was born. That was in 2011. I hadn't gone to another salon for a hair cut since. But I sought her out when I was ready to cut again at the end of 2013 - and she did NOT disappoint. Firstly, the salon is so cozy and wonderful, if I didn't have to run that day, I could have stayed there all day. The staff is so pleasant and accommodating, I loved the conversation and the most important thing? She respected what I asked of her for my hair and did exactly what I requested with professionalism and courtesy. This isn't only for locs. I don't have locs / dreads. I wear my hair naturally and out of twists or plaits but want to go somewhere that won't judge me if I come in and want a blow out and she was clear to let me know if I wanted to do that - it was my hair and she would do the very best to care for it and make sure that it would come out healthy either way. Now that this salon and Fajr are closer to where I live than before, I'll be visiting regularly for my trim and color touch up... but I'm rocking my pixie natural and LOVING it (so is everyone else!) The atmosphere in her salon is beautiful and comfortable, and showcases the gorgeous dolls (soft sculptures) she crochets. Before I visited her in August 2012, I was so worried that my dreadlocks were damaged beyond repair. I'd had trouble finding someone who could naturally tighten mature whitelady dreads. Not only did Shaquora and her talented daughter trim, tidy, manicure and re-lock my dreads to perfection, but they did it quickly for a fantastic price. I've been coming to Sophisticated for around a year now for loc maintenance from Fajr and my hair has been healthy and growing ever since. The salon is quaint and appointments can fill up quickly especially around holiday times and its for good reason. They use quality products, most are natural without a lot of chemicals and they're easy on your hair. There's an essential oil blend they make in house and sell that i'd recommend anyone looking to give their hair/locs some moisture and shine in-between appointments. Went and got my hair done yesterday and I loved the energy in the shop. Fajr did a very nice Updo on my locs and I love it!! I will definitely return here for future hair do's. This lady is a rip off. I went to her to get some corn rows done (with extensions). I wanted them done with kinky hair. She charged me $80 for the hair ($40/bundle) and then $200 to do the corn rows. Who charges $200 to do some cornrows? Also, she did a horrible, horrible job with the cornrows. After I saw it, I was like, i could have done this myself. She also seemed surprise by how unimpressive her work looked. I don't like to argue and quarrel with hairdressers after they do my hair so I just let it go. I will never go back to her and I was sure to not recommend any of my friends. She's a nice person and all but I definitely feel that I got the raw end of the deal. I decided to take my 10 year old daughter to see Shaquora at Sophisticated Loc's after being sold by her blog and Ad on Craigslist. Not only is she extremely friendly and hospitable but she has a vast knowledge on natural hair and techniques used. She made my daughter feel very comfortable and her hair came out absolutely stunning. My daughter also mention how therapeutic her herbal shampoo and conditioning felt as she was getting it done. This past weekend I finally got my start into the loc world by getting extensions put in by Shaquora. It is an extensive process time wise but it's so worth it in the end. I wanted a mash-up of colors(natural brown, auburn and a burgundy) and a really cute do as it would be my look till my roots grew out. I loved it once it was done. I walked out of there feeling so free and beautiful. From her salon to the train station I was already getting compliments from both sexes. I got dreadlock extensions put in here and they were terrible! First of all the technique she used could never be meant to be permanent ( and she told me they would be). After only a few weeks later I started to realize dreads were becoming weak and loosening and eventually falling out, it could be due to the fact that she took extremely kinky synthetic hair and sloppily attached it onto the ends of my hair which is not at all the same texture as the fake hair she put in. She did not even bother to look at the texture of my hair or ask me to first come in for a consultation like most places, instead she was money hungry and lied about having the skill of doing dreadlock extensions. Only after researching, and learning more about dreads, different salons, and dreadlocking extension techniques did i realize that she was not at all skilled in the department and i had been jipped. Therefore I contacted her via e-mail explaining to her what had happened to the dreads and I never recieved a reply which I see as very unprofessional and a clear sign of "say whatever and then take the money and run". Most hairdressers would tell a customer to come back in, I never told her i wanted her to fix it for free I just wanted her to fix it and she could not even do that.Thank God i was able to cut off the mess she put onto my hair and manicure and twist my own hair but because of her lack of skill and the months I had tried to hold on to the style she put it some of my hair had dreaded and some of it was still silky,curly. Either way the point is clear DO NOT GO TO THIS LADY TO HAVE YOUR DREADS REPAIRED OR EXTENSIONS ADDED! She doesn't know what she is doing in that department, she may know how to touch up dreads already started or do some braids but she doesnt know how to do the extensions technique and she should just say that instead of lying and charging people the same high price as other salons that do it properly and permanently, that's just selfish, outrageous, and thievery. read more

Has a broke college student living in New York starting a natural journey might prove to be hard. I used to retwist my hair myself but it got to the point that I needed professional help. I called around different loc salons in all five boroughs but all their prices were not in line with what was in my wallet. Then I came across Sophiscated Loc's Salon. I spoke to shaquora who was warm and understanding of my situation. She told me that if i washed my hair myself all I would have to pay is $65 for a retwist. This was definitely an offer I could not pass up. About a 10 min walk from the A train (if you walk slowly like me) the shop was easy to find. Shaquora and her family were very welcoming and friendly which made me feel right at home and comfortable.
