Culture Hair Studio is clean, inviting and has an overall warm vibe. Arlene did a masterful job washing my hair, including pre-soaking with seabreeze and wearing exfoliating gloves during the wash to ensure she got my ultra-dry and dirty hair clean. For the first time since I can remember, my scalp does not itch after a wash. I plan to incorporate these methods whenever I wash my hair. Arlene was clearly well trained and had the expertise to answer all of my questions. She was pleasant and she worked hard. Sometimes when people are paid by the hour, they purposely work slower to make more money. Not Arlene. She made the most of our time. She also told great stories and jokes. She was good company. It was all fun and games until it came time to pay. She demanded $125 more than what we agreed to when we booked the appointment. Here are the mistakes I made and ways you can avoid unexpected costs from her. 1. As soon as you speak to her, ask her to send you her price list. It is not posted on the salon's website or on its Yelp page. When I sat in her chair is when I learned one even existed. The price list included several extra fees that she did not disclose at the time of my booking, including that her fee significantly increases once you reach 6 hours (my retie took 7). She demanded that I pay these costly surcharges instead of what she quoted me. When I asked her why she didn't previously disclose her price list, she said "because people don't usually take this long." Ok, then why have the price list in the first place? I found this lack of transparency and the expectation for me to pay according to the price list unfair and unprofessional. Her defense was that the price list was in front of me the entire appointment and at any time I could've stopped her from working or asked questions. My rebuttal to that is I got my quote directly from her a month in advance. Learning new pricing the day of is unprofessional, no matter how long it's suddenly in front of my face. Second, this was my first time working with her. When I saw the price list at her chair, I assumed the initial quote she gave me was her first-time customer rate or just what she had decided to charge me, so I didn't think the price list applied to me since we had spoken separately.  The price list is not publicly posted anywhere online, so I'm attaching the photo I took of it when I was there. 2. Send her several pictures of your hair from different angles. When we booked the appointment, she asked "for a picture" of my hair. I sent one photo. Once it was time to pay, she used this as a reason to charge me more because she said I did not fully disclose how long it would take to do my hair. She said she usually makes that determination by looking at pictures. I didn't know to send multiple pictures with multiple angles. I have not been to a salon in years. When I asked her why she didn't ask me to send additional photos, she said she was too busy at the time. 3. Do not pay for the breaks she takes. After washing my hair, she sat me under the dryer for 30 minutes. During that time, she ate some food and was otherwise on break. I realized after I paid and left that I paid her for that 30 minute break in addition to the 7 hours she actually worked. According to her own price list that she enforces above all else, she owes me $35. In conclusion, I had a great experience at Culture Hair Salon until it was time to pay.

Such a great experience! My sister's locs came out beautifully, and the environment was so warm and welcoming. Arlene my loctician is always kind, professional, and makefeel right at home. Highly recommend!

I found the stylist I used through TikTok and cross checking reviews. But what drew me to sign up…read morewas the fact her location was in an area that I frequent and wasn't as hard for me to reach. It is very close to the Borough Hall train station, close to Jay Street- Metrotech and various other buses and public forms of transport. In fact, I thought the salon was a general spa as opposed to a salon suite of different hairdressers and beauty services. I am used to this type of establishment because I had a hairstylist who worked in a similar space when I lived outside of NYC. There are various ways to enter. My hairstylist gave me a code to enter and you can either call for the stylist to get you up or you can get a QR code. The lobby to the salons are on the first floor while the actual booths are on the second floor. There are stairs and an elevator. There are multiple couches and comfy benches on the second floor so you can wait for your appointment. There are stations for coffee and tea that my stylist told me to take advantage of. There is artwork all over and the color scheme makes it not sterile but not too bright. There is a vending machine onsite but since the location is close to many eateries (chopt is next door) you don't have to worry about access. I had a great time with my stylist Lilian. She came on time. She asked me questions about my desires and goals and gave me recommendations that I can use in my free time. I look forward to using her services in the future.
