I bought my dress on sample sale and while the length was good (it was petite size and generally shortening the length is quiet expensive) so I wanted to just add in straps and take out the side seam a bit for comfort. The team was so kind and supportive. The price was very reasonable and was in line with the original quote. For reference, my dress was altered in 2024. Time flies! The women there we're awesome one of them was having a baby. I think she may have been the owner. Anywho I was very leery to leave my items with them initially. I had two pair of very expensive balmain pants one pair in velvet material and another pair of all leather $2k pants that had a rip down the inner thigh. When I tell you these women worked their magic they worked their magic I mean it. I don't think anybody in the world could have done a better job with these clothes. The work was exceptionally good it was absolutely sensational. My tailor took a serious hit during COViD so I've been scouring the city seeking an alternative for maybe about a year now. I heart this place and I haven't even picked up my first round of alterations yet. I had the unfortunate experience of attempting to patron an establishment advertised as being LGBTQ ‍ friendly and was met with unfortunate customer satisfaction (see other reviews for this place) so I left and hopped back on Yelp to find this gem and a gem it truly is. It was mid week and I was on a break from work, so I called first. Megan answered the phone and I explained my needs, she said that they had availability until noon so I rushed over. When I arrived I noticed that there were two establishments, one in which appeared to do upholstery and the other clothing alterations...I was STOKED. I'd been riding around seeking an upholster for a pillow my Mom gifted me years ago. Talk about two birds one stone. I entered to be greeted by Sage, who was sour rounded by beautiful fabrics floor to top and just a truly gorgeous work space. Megan showed shortly after and walked me to a reasonably sized dressing room with a beautiful chaise and large mirror to began sizing me. The rustic, but small and very intimate details I loved. But it was also their attention to detail. Megan listened to my requests and made adjustment accordingly. After which, I went back to the front in which they recorded all of my items, set prices, gave me a pick-up date and told me that I would receive a text message from them when my items are ready. Sage saves the day again!!! I was hours from my bridal shower and my cleaners messed up my dress. Due to time constraints I didn't think I would be able to get the dress cleaned and then bring to Sage to alter. I called her crying and panicking while getting my hair done and she reassured me she could help. I sent pictures of the dress as well as how much I wanted altered and taken off. My friend then drove the dress (while I was still in my hair appointment) to Sage to alter the hem. She did a perfect job! Literally saving me in a crisis. Sage and Charlotte absolutely saved the day when it came to an unfinished alterations job on my wedding dress, and on very short notice at that! I had a pretty bad experience with another alterations shop and called Sophos to see what could be done on my very tight timeline (1 week) to get my dress taken in since the other shop didn't get it done when they said they would. I was really upset at the situation but Charlotte was super reassuring on the phone and even pulled up the dress online to get a better feel for the work that needed to be done on it. She made me an appointment for that week, so I came in, got pinned, and the dress was ready when they said it would be ready the following week. Both Sage and Charlotte are calm, nice people who clearly know what they are doing when it comes to their craft! I felt absolutely beautiful in the dress as they made it look exactly how it needed to look, and their pricing was very reasonable, even including an extra fee for a rush job. Very happy I found this upholstery shop in the neighborhood. My dining chairs were splitting at the seams and I brought them in for repair. After discussing the options, I decided to reupholster the chairs to avoid the seam splitting issue. Sophos had several fabric options available including vinyl and leather and a good selection of colors. We ended up going with dark blue leather and they look great. I'll say I'm relatively happy with my wedding dress alterations at Sophos. The cons; my dress was too tight, too long, and the appointments were spaced out quite a lot. They ended up needing to replace my zipper because I guess the one on the dress was "cheap". But they also took it in about an inch so they didn't take into account the allowance for the new zipper making the dress extremely tight on my back. It was so tight after I had it on for 10 minutes during my fitting I had red lines on my back. So on my wedding day it was pretty uncomfortable and was miserable to sit and eat dinner in. There was boning on the inside and because the dress was about an inch too small now the boning was bending all crazy because I was stuffed in there. The dress hem was also too long which I mentioned I'd be in grass the whole time so I wanted it shorter, and they altered it twice and I was still tripping over it. I started the alterations process in May which was 4 months before my wedding. In total I had 3 appointments; the 1st, the second 2 months later, the 3rd 2 months after that and picked up only 1 week before my wedding. It felt pretty rushed I would've liked to not have them so spread out so I could've actually taken the time to see how I liked things instead of freaking out I was a week away from my wedding. The last thing I'll say is it's an old building and they're doing a lot of sewing, so there is dust on the floor. This would be totally fine if you're not trying a long white dress on, a nice sweeping before appointments would've made me feel a lot better. Especially because I didn't have time to get my dress dry cleaned before the wedding as I only had a week before the date. Prices were a little more than I thought, wasn't expecting a zipper replacement on a new dress though. read more

I worked with Charlotte as my bridal seamstress for getting my dress tailored/altered for my wedding in July 2024. Charlotte was amazing - responsive and incredibly accommodating despite my decision to change dresses halfway through the process when I happened to come across my dream dress that was perfect except being 3 sizes too big. Charlotte not only made it fit perfectly, but also ended up providing consultation/tailoring services for both my rehearsal dinner and day after dresses, as well as helping change out my husband's suit buttons last minute when he received his jacket from a different tailor and the design wasn't as planned. Overall, I couldn't recommend Sophos and Charlotte more to any Chicago area bride looking for a good wedding tailor - not only were the results perfect and exactly what I asked for, but she made the entire process feel manageable and didn't add any stress to my wedding planning process (which any bride to be knows can be the greatest gift of all!) read more

Please be very, very specific and very, very careful if you bring your furniture to be reupholstered by this business. they recently reupholstered an arm chair (no issues) and an ottoman (not properly done). I phoned about an issue (batting/cushioning not replaced properly) and was told "that's exactly the condition it was in when we received it. We can repair it for an additional $55 - $75." To paint you a picture, I was a bride in distress - I thought I had found the perfect dress but the order got canceled last-minute. I scrambled to find a new dress and ended up finding two that I was in love with but both needed taken in and hemmed. Most bridal tailors wouldn't take me given I only had a month until the big day. I went to Sophos to add cups to a bias cut satin maxi dress I was wearing to a wedding. At the initial dropoff, the tailor was so helpful in showing me all the different cup sizes and helping me figure out which would be best for me. When I came back to try on and pick up the dress, the placement of the cups was off and the shape wasn't right for my figure. The tailor agreed and we went back to the drawing board. I picked up the dress for the second time and all looked good when I tried it on. However, at the wedding, one of the cups became unstitched only half hour into wearing the dress, and my chest looks lopsided in all the wedding photos. I returned to Sophos after the wedding to have the cups removed from the dress, since they were no longer even in the chest area. The person working at the time offered me a discount on a future service, but to be honest, I am not interested in giving them another chance, given that the work they did was not satisfactory. I appreciated the offer but truly felt a refund would have been more appropriate. read more

I was a little worried about taking my wedding dress anywhere to be tailored because it had lace sleeves and was nervous they would get messed up during alterations, but so grateful I went here! Everything looked absolutely perfect. As the bride, you'll obviously get tons of compliments about your dress and how you look, but I got a few compliments specifically calling out how well my dress fit, and how it looked like the dress was custom made for me! They even recorded a video of how to do my bustle properly, so it was super easy for my mom and friend to do it at our reception. Reasonably priced, especially for bridal.
