This place was adorable. I knew we just had to come here since it was around the block from our airbnb plus cute. Being so full from dinner I just couldn't order anything but I did have a taste of my husband's delicious treat. I love gelato and I'm always down to try out new places. I stopped by here after seeing reviews on Yelp. There were 8 options for gelato with some being sorbets. I like sorbets but today I just tried 3 of their gelatos selections and I was very pleased. They had the option to purchase to go containers as well. Gorgeous looking and tasting gelato. There are not an overwelming amount of flavors, which helps in making a decision and trusting that each flavour is incredible. Although, all sound and look amazing so the decision there is tough! I asked the owner for their favourite and they said, "if I didn't like them all I wouldn't make them." While that doesn't help me make a decision it makes me wildly respect this Gelateria and the owner. I absolutely love this!! I passed Sorella's on the way to a gallery and decided to go back for a treat. I had not been to the medication which is a big improvement on the original. There's a nice outdoor area of tables with umbtellas, and a few parking spaces. The batches are limited which is fine, but if you're going to call yourself a Gelateria, at least have the flavors of Italy. I selected the Turkish Coffee, which was good, but. Absolutely spectacular gelato! I would've never thought I'd find such high quality artisan gelato in the middle of Lexington - a pleasant surprise no doubt! The local gelato place of note apparently moved to this location recently, which is in a residential area but walkable from downtown. It has indoor and outdoor seating. The flavor selection when I arrived was not huge, with maybe a dozen or so flavors (and it did appear to be all dairy gelato), some of which had run out at the end of the day. Of course, you might want the place that runs out over the place that makes extra and sells it the next day. I ended up with a little cup of peach and a peanut butter Nutella flavor. I didn't really see the need to have peanut butter and Nutella in the same bite, but like a lot of people I will shamelessly buy anything with the word Nutella on it and the flavor combination, primarily peanut with streaks of the slightly hazelnut and mostly sugary paste adding color. The peach was as richly flavored as I might have hoped, and very summer-y. I'm not sure they'll ever be the go-to in a pretty strong local ice cream scene, but it seemed to me that the smoothness and flavor choices set them apart from the others enough to be worth a visit. read more

FIRST OFF- The lemon basil gelato from here is amazing! I mean you literally can taste both flavors so very distinctively. Even though I only had a small taste, my tastebuds were dancing the entire time! Dessert before dinner is a thing . We came here before grabbing dinner and it was the perfect idea! This cute Gelateria is located in downtown Lexington, KY. Street parking is what you have to settle for. We had no issues. When we entered , we were greeted by the owners. They were friendly and helpful. There were about 6 or 7 flavors left so it wasn't too too hard to settle on a flavor. I didn't order anything but my sis had the lemon basil , the kids had whipped cream and some other flavors that I don't recall (they are photographed though). The serving sizes were a little small in my opinion but the quality of the product did not miss a beat! You could tell the finest ingredients were used to create this perfect gelato. After having lived in Italy for 7 years, I've always been skeptical about shops or restaurants that name themselves after proper Italian shops, i.e. "Gelateria" or "Ristorante". Time and time again, those places could never live up to an authentic, Italian taste. Sorella became the first place to do just that. My girls and I wanted to check out this ice cream shop after protesting downtown. I am so glad they knew about this! The owner apparently had studied everything there is to know about ice cream in Italy, and man, I could definitely tell she learned a lot! The ice cream itself was phenomenal! Something so simple, yet worth every penny. I got the small cup with half the cup being their strawberry lemonade ice cream and the other half being their crema ice cream. Crema is very well-known Italian ice cream, so when I first saw it, I knew I had to try it. I'm so glad I did. Because I was not even remotely disappointed. Over the summer, I read a book called "Love & Gelato." It's about a teenager who lost her mother to cancer and went to live with her unknown father in Italy -- there's a summer romance mixed in there. (I recommend this quick read if that's your thing, otherwise, feel free to ignore the book recommendation.) Well. After I read the book, I realized it had been a good ten years or so since I last had some gelato -- the one and only time I've ever had *real* gelato before. And. I absolutely had to get some gelato in my stomach sometime soon. Now, I've never had gelato in Italy, but know there is a lot of 'gelato' out there (I've eaten in the ten years since) that isn't really gelato at all. To find something real, or as close to real as possible, is kind of hard. Did a quick search online and.... Lexington has a place with gelato!! Later that week, after a visit to the Arboretum, I dragged my husband and toddler to Sorella to cool us off, satisfy my gelato craving, and introduce my husband to gelato. Sorella is a beautiful shop in a fun neighborhood of Lexington. We spoke with the store owner and she mentioned that she (or was it her sister?) learned how to make gelato in Italy and brought that knowledge to this gelateria. Delighted, I sampled a variety of amazing flavors before deciding to get the Forest Berry gelato to share with my son, who was going through a berry phrase at the time. My husband picked a chocolate flavor. Friends, this is *REAL* gelato. The flavorful, light & fluffy, delicious gelato that sets it apart from ice cream and similar desserts. And my son, who didn't like ice cream (I know, right!?) devoured his portion of my berry gelato. My husband, however, who is set in his ways and loves his chocolate ice cream, liked it but was a bit unsure about the gelato texture. Don't worry... I'll work with him on that. I tried a sample of the pineapple basil which was surprisingly refreshing. But I decided on a scoop of the banana pudding flavor. It was quite tasty! The gelato is great! I was a bit surprised when I saw a sign stating that only 1 sample is allowed. I've never seen a place that sells any type of ice cream product and only allows 1 sample...I ordered the Bourbon Vanilla Bean and the Strawberry. This place rocks!! Locally owned and super cute spot with delicious gelato. I love stopping in whenever I happen to be near the area. I was blown away by the peppermint bark gelato. This is a quaint little sorbet/Gelato shop on Limestone. Each one are made in small batches. You can order a flight which has 6 flavors. In my opinion, the best flavors were the fruit--peach, lemon, mixed berry, key lime. We also tried the whipped cream, chocolate, almond and yogurt & honey. This place is clean and charming. I tried gelato for the first time yesterday! There. I admitted it. I know, I'm a late bloomer. To my defense, I'm not a huge sweets and dessert fan. This just so happens to be one of the only spots that you can find gelato in Lexington and that is mainly what they serve. I'm a firm believer that it's best to master one trait or one product instead of being mediocre on all of the featured products. Sorella Gelateria masters gelato. Oh, do you remember when I said that I wasn't a dessert fan... that is now past tense. On a Sunday, shortly before closing time, there were 7 gelato flavor features. I think that is way under the norm though. I'm not going to knock them since it is winter and they did have the flavor staples... an espresso flavor, chocolate, two fruit flavors, and my favorite... mint candy. There is usually a thin line between a mint dessert tasting like toothpaste and SG's mastered it, skipping right through the toothpaste flavor. The size of the small was pretty big, not your average 'one scoop' portion. I love the Limestone location and the entire area. A ton of restaurants within walking distance, making for a great date night area. read more

Okay, so I have never had gelato in Italy, but this has to be as close as it gets. This stuff is amazing. I no longer live in Lexington, but I always try to stop at Sorella when I visit. So far, I think I have tried cookies and cream, cookie dough, pistachio, and whipped cream. I haven't tried any fruit flavors, but I'm sure they're just as great. The owner is also incredibly nice. Prices are also reasonable and they have a student discount. The only con? The parking situation on North Limestone is not great.
