The best prosciutto you will ever eat. A non-touristy place in Rome is often difficult to find. This place is authentic and reasonable. Go for apertivo at the bar--one of the best wine selections in Rome and the best cured meats imaginable--stay for dinner at a table. Amazing local restaurant! Sorpasso is a great place where locals stop for a glass of wine and fine cheeses. Dinner was absolutely fantastic and very reasonably priced. A local's afterwork spot. sit outside if you can. get a nice glass of Italian wine and some prosciutto and a platter of cheese, and in Heaven you will be. the Price is very decent for the quality produce you'll get. Pretty fancy people seem to go there (due to the neighbourhood) but there is a very laid back and chill atmosphere. at least when I was there. the staff was very kind and professional. next time i'll stay for dinner and not just for appetisers. i suggest to go with a group as It could be a bit noisy inside, since every one is enjoying their time, and the tables are close to each-other. We have been in Italy for one month and eaten dinner out almost every night from Florence to Rome. The dinner we had at Sorpasso, hands down, was our best experience. The fillet was to die for, as was the salmon. The location, service and value was all there. From start, to the great deserts were second to none. Stumbled upon this restaurant while killing some time before a Vatican Museum tour. Oh. My. God. Stellar. What an incredible restaurant. They have their own signature pizza like dish and Yu have to get it. Forgetting the exact name but you can't miss it. Our server could NOT have been nicer. She spoke English with us after realizing my Italian was limited at best. So incredibly kind and helpful. She literally went through each item on the specials menu and described them. I haven't even ordered dinner yet and they've already brought me two free things: a little plate of cheese and cold cuts with some bread twists, and a fantastic little appetizer delivered by a waitress who is making the rounds to everyone. I love this place! The atmosphere is buzzy and cool, the wine is really good and the pour generous. I asked for a recommendation and love what they brought. This place was awesome. Found it on yelp and went out of our way to eat here. The fresh juices, amazing salads, cafés and especially their signature Trapizzino sandwiches were to die for. We wished we were hungrier so that we could try that too that we did not order. After we finished eating on the patio we then went inside were blown away by the amazing atmosphere and cool vibe inside. I wish we stayed in Rome longer so we could eat here again. read more

Sorpasso has great vibes. It's an intimate and charming restaurant with a warm aroma right as you walk in. You may have to wait a while to be seated (if you're a party bigger than 2) as it is small, but if you go at night there are free aperitivos to snack on while you wait. Food is very fresh. Our first two days in Rome we walked by this restaurant in the evenings and every time it was extremely busy. Like the street full of people with wine glasses and cars double parked kind of busy. So our last night we decided to stop in. We got there at 6:30 so we managed to get a table in the back of the restaurant. They had an English menu for their antipasti and drinks, however their primo/secondo menu is different every night, so it's only written in Italian. So me, being the Italian languge novice I am, wildly typed everything into Google Translate to see what I could eat (I have a shellfish allergy). I eventually settled on a pesto pasta that was pretty good. My girlfriend had a vegetarian spaghetti that was fantastic. I'm not usually one for vegetarian dishes, but this one was quite tasty. By the time we were done, the crowd had already started to form in the street. read more

We had been recommended this restaurant before heading to Rome by friends back home as a casual, but great restaurant near our B&B, so we reserved a table for our first night in Rome. Great recommendation! They had lost our reservation but no matter, we were given the next available table outside within 5 minutes of arrival. This place is quite busy with what seemed to be only locals- a sure sign we'd enjoy our meal. Started with a mixed Italian cured meat plate which we gobbled up with the bread that had been put at our table. Delicious! Three glasses is San Giovese red wine- lovely! Main course for both of us (usually we try not to order the same things, but this time we broke with tradition) and ordered spaghetoni (like a thick linguine) with zucchini flowers in a pesto sauce off the daily special list. It was absolutely fantastic (we love zucchini flowers & they are almost never seen in Toronto). Also had sparkling water. Dinner cost £55, which struck me as quite reasonable. Would absolutely return to this gem on a subsequent visit to Rome. read more

our first meal in Rome and maybe our favorite. bustling, authentic, Roman but welcoming to us late arriving Americans. we emailed ahead and they kindly made us a reservation, and our table was waiting for us in minutes, even though it was 10:30pm when we arrived and the place was packed with rowdy locals. most memorable to me now was the handmade orchiette with four meats. not even sure what four meats they were, but every bite was rich, perfectly cooked and delicious. I second guessed my choice of a hotel in Prati so many times, but after eating here, I would stay in Prati and make this my regular "first meal" in Rome every time I come back. prego! read more

If you're looking for a breakfast place this is definitely NOT the spot. The option is bread, meat and cheese which has a consistency of dry, dense bread, cheese that's hard to eat and meat with a lot of fat on it. Not your ideal spot for the morning if you're any traveler. English is also not so good so expect things to come out differently than you request. Pasta was SUPER salty, like damn, it wasn't a big portion and i couldn't even finish it. Found this place after my husband and I left the Vatican. We got a cheese and charcuterie plate that was phenomenal, he had pasta e fagoli and I had a pasta with butternut squash in it. So fresh and delicious. We also had the cannoli for dessert and it was amazing. Highly recommend this place. Love the atmosphere. They have an in house charcuterie area where a guy literally cuts meats by hand. read more

This place is awesome! Stumbled upon it for lunch yesterday with my husband trying to find our way to our hotel. They had an impressive menu and we had a hard time deciding. (One of the servers helped us in translating the menu despite the busy-ness of the place) In the end we decided on the eggplant Parmesan and one of their items off their daily menu-spaghetti and salmon. Wow. We had the loveliest lunch after a great morning at the Vatican. We escaped the hordes of tourists at the Vatican and wound our way through the alleys to Il Sorpasso. This amazing lunch spot taught us that the more rickety and mismatched the tables and chairs, the more authentic and delicious the food! Stopped for a nice bite to eat before an evening tour of the Vatican. Try the trapizzino...they are THAT good. I had the eggplant and it was delicious. Also had a glass of wine and the chocolate pear cake for dessert. Who knew chocolate and pears were so good together. It was a great lunch...and all for under 15euro.
