    Cheesesteak & fries

So I was on the hunt for something good to eat the other night & I remembered from a friend on Facebook that Soul Smoked BBQ was inside of the R-House now. Which means it isn't a hassle to find parking & it's usually some type of entertainment going on as you wait for you foods. Luckily for me I walked in it was only 1 person ahead of me. I went with the cheesesteak combo for $15. It's one of the best cheesesteaks in town especially if you freak it & throw some of the brisket BBQ sauce on it. I promise you if you've never had Soul Smoked you're missing out on a treat.

They have a QR code menu to look at with prices but when it came to pay it cost more. Definitely did not like that considering how much it cost already. The portions were just average and not complimentary to the price. The bbq was also average. Would've expected a bit more from it. Wish I had chosen a different place. One positive though was the friendly staff.

2 meat platter: Fried Catfish with Beef brisket, Mac and cheese and Collard greens

From the service to the food, it was an overall great experience. I found out about Soul Smoked from a TikTok post and was glad I decided to try it. It's located in Broadway Market down on Broadway in the Fells Point area. Once I walked up to the stand, I was immediately greeted and taken care of. I got the 2 meat platter and chose catfish and beef brisket with collard greens and Mac and cheese and it did not disappoint! The catfish was golden brown, crispy and delicious. The seasoning on it was just right and it was such a large portion, I could barely get through half of it. The beef brisket was tender, moist and delicious as well. It came with barbecue sauce and they gave me some on the side. The collard greens were seasoned to perfection and tender and the Mac and cheese was just like homemade. The food was reasonably priced and the staff were friendly and helpful. If you want good food, stop at Soul Smoked BBQ, you won't regret it.

    Brisket breakfast sandwich with cheese

Went to the farmers market today and after passing Soul Smoked 3 times, 3 different Sundays, finally decided to get a breakfast sandwich. Originally, I planned to see if they had beef sausage for breakfast sausage. Their sausage is pork, so I opted for the brisket sandwich and it does not disappoint!! The BBQ sauce is very tasty and my egg was not overcooked. They cook your sandwich to order and they tell you that on the menu. The chef and her whole family are a delight. Their booth is full of warmth and fun. I chose potato bread for my sandwich over a bagel or roll just because I'm picky. My brisket is a little tight but that's because I didn't eat it right away. Their flavor is very good and I don't need salt. I appreciate the sauce on the brisket for the sandwich and I enjoy the smoke they have on the brisket.

Their menu is expansive and can accommodate all types of dietary restrictions--we had dairy free, vegan, pollotarian, and gluten free folks, and they all enjoyed the food. Set up and tear down were efficient, and the staff was so friendly, polite, and professional! And the food! I over ordered, so the whole library staff got to eat, too. Everyone raved about the buffets (we did a "cookout" style, a "fajita bar" style, and we had breakfast for three days). Everything was cooked well and seasoned well! The fresh fruit was delicious! Can I recommend them any more than I have? If I'm ever in the DC/DMV area again for an event, I will definitely give them a call.

Dinner was for 25 + people and there was barely enough food for 12. Not that this mattered, as EVERYTHING was inedible and there were no plates, cutlery or napkins provided. I take that back, the store brought $2.00 (price still on) cornbread and $16.00 cake were the ONLY items edible. The Mac and Cheese was dry and bland. I will give them credit for it being both overcooked and undercooked all in the same batch. I'm still trying to make sense of that! The only adjective that even remotely describes this Mac and Cheese is "disrespectful". Like, seriously, the disrespect was 10/10. The chicken was undercooked and bland. How do you make jerk chicken bland and soggy? I'm actually curious. The "blackened" salmon was overcooked yet not blackened, creating another "make it make sense" moment. I immediately spat out the greens. They were undercooked, not under-seasoned but literally "not seasoned". Wait, I take that back too, if you count the dirt and grit as seasoning. They should be ashamed of themselves for ripping people off. Pictures don't lie. The fact that they were sent pictures and still stood behind their product tells you all you need to know. Please, please, PLEASE do not let these people ruin your event and more importantly your special moments and memories. There are so many other respectable and legitimate Black-owned catering companies i.e. Ohhs and Ahhs, Henry's, Hitching Post.

The Classic Catering People - Treats!

We used Classic to cater our wedding. To be honest, we feel a bit mixed about the experience. TLDR:…read morewe wound up giving four stars because although our bar situation was a disaster, food is more important and the food was better than most other wedding food. The food - as foodies, we felt like Classic gave us very good wedding food (but it fell short of very good restaurant food). During our tasting, we were pretty blown away by the food -- all the flavors were excellent and all the food was perfectly cooked. Day of, a lot of the food was overcooked, and things were under sauced, so we missed a lot of the flavors from our tasting. The food was certainly better than most other weddings I've been to, but if I would have gotten the food at a restaurant I would have been disappointed. I know it's really difficult to cook in bulk. (FWIW though, people really loved the mashed potatoes -- and were still talking about them a week later.) We were also extremely pleased with how Classic handled dietary restrictions. We had a number of people with restrictions, and everyone was able to eat, and no one got sick. They even worked with us to make our whole menu gluten free so that all of our (many) celiac guests could partake. The drinks - our drinks were a disaster. And I think part of this is because our catering manager switched just a few months before the wedding. Our original catering manager had allowed us to create our own cocktail recipes. We love mixology so it felt very fitting for our wedding. We wanted our wedding to feel like a cocktail bar and not just have the standard wedding cocktail. However, our new catering manager pretty much lost her mind when she heard this, saying it's never done. Our conversations were weird, and we never figured out what the issues were so we assumed it was reluctance to do something different and thought they'd figure it out. However, it seems the issues were the bartenders can barely make a drink. Although we sent VERY specific recipes, i think only one of the bartenders followed them. The first drink I was given when I came down to my cocktail hour was supposed to be a lavender chamomile play on a French 75. But what I was actually given was lemon juice, soda, and gin. I literally spit it out, and had a mild panic attack that my guests were being served undrinkable drinks for our whole cocktail hour. It turns out, that only one bartender was making undrinkable drinks (and they continued to for most of the evening). Another one was making ok drinks, and one was making drinks correctly. No one could remember which bartender was making which drinks, so everyone remarked how inconsistent our drinks were. A number of times people had to toss drinks because they picked the wrong bartender. I was also pretty pissed that although we had confirmed with our planner and classic a half a dozen times that they would pass drinks during cocktail hour, they never did. Afterwards my planner said it was because the drinks were too complicated. But they could have passed wine, or beer, or prebatched drinks (which we thought they were doing). We really didn't want a line at the bar, and there was one, so a month later, I'm still fuming about the disaster that was the bar. I think had we had more time, or better communication from the new catering manager, we could have worked something out that would have worked for us and them. But, instead, trying not to piss us off, I think she gave in knowing they couldn't hold up their end of the bargain. The service - the service (aside from the bar and our catering manager) was good. All the catering staff were very kind, and rushed like crazy to finish our room flip. We appreciated that they designate one server just for the bride and groom! The process - Our process was a bit of a mess because of the catering manager flip. But, were it not for that, I think it would have gone pretty smoothly. Classic are def pros at putting on events. We were happy with the process before the switch. Afterwards, we didn't really jive with the new catering manager, who was much more rigid than the original one. We might have been less off put by this, but, she also wasn't great at communicating the reasons behind her "nos" or "yes, with reservations". Our planner had told us that your classic experience very much depends on your catering manager, and based on our experience with two of them, that seems accurate.
