We are Hotshot drivers and are on the road constantly. A few months ago we had found Soulman's BBQ in Lancaster, TX and had an amazing experience with the staff, the food and the ambiance. With this location we just happen to stop at in Sulphur Springs, as soon as we got there, being we're from out of town and this was our second time going, we were reading the menu and asking questions. The staff member behind the counter was answering questions at first but it all quickly just became unfriendly when we felt rushed because there was one other couple waiting behind us. Mind you, they just opened. The staff members faces were full of misery as if they didn't want to be there. The brisket, which we were praising from the Lancaster location, was brined with a salt bath that could make you swell up like a balloon and leave your mouth drier than Arizona. I do not recommend this location as a traveler. Treat everyone equally and always be kind! Stay safe out there! read more

First time I go to one of these barbecue places seen them all over DFW they look rundown this one look good so we decided to stop here and eat While working here in this town big variety on the menu got the half a rack of ribs two sides and a drink $24 and some change the ribs fell off the bone, but the meat was tough. Must've been sitting there for a while or it was yesterday's ribs the sides I had beans and cabbage. cabbage was good beans not really good. Disappointed about the ribs. One thing I'm not gonna complain the ice cream they're free ice cream was fantastic. I took my family to Soulman's and had a pleasant experience. Brisket was good, ribs were good, sides were tasty. I can see where some may want to knock the place cause it's a bit more corporate than the next place, but I don't feel it's a reason to give a place a bad review. The service was great, the food was warm and the beef was beef. The fat was fatty. I read a few other reviews and it seems people are out to get this place cause it doesn't fit their needs. I get it. Five star service from the young people behind the counter when I stopped in literally 2 minutes before closing time. They couldn't have been more friendly, cordial, or hospitable. A great team to have serving you. So why only 3 stars? The smoked sausage sandwich these delightful people fixed for me, even with sauce added on the bun, was rather bland. The sausage had only a modicum of smokiness and the only spicing I detected was a small amount of black pepper. This meat ranked in with Hillshire Farms kielbasa, which might well have beat it on flavor. Also, the sausage was not hot temperature-wise. It was hovering just slightly above room temperature, having spent the tag end of their operating hours under the heat lamp which wasn't keeping it very warm. Since I had no sides with the sandwich I may give one of the Soulman's Bar-B-Que locations a more comprehensive tryout at a later date, since the sides in the case and their pecan and buttermilk pie slices did look good. So the takeaway of my experience was: *GREAT* people, only so-so food. Will be hoping for better vittles next time. read more

I thought we would support local business during this virus mess. It was my son's birthday so we were looking forward to BBQ. NO, JUST NO. I was supposed to get 3 pork ribs and pulled pork, spiced potatoes, mac-n-cheese, and fried cabbage. Forgot my 8 oz cabbage. So I didn't get that. Potatoes were obviously old and dried out, burnt pieces. The mac-n-cheese had absolutely NO flavor, not even cheese. The worst part was what they called a pork rib. That picture doesn't do justice to how little meat there was on the only side it was on. You couldn't even take a bite - there was no bite. Bone, black, dry. The second and third piece were not much better. Dry stale food. I'd been there one other time and it was ok. Now after this take out experience I won't be back. I wasted $42.73. This is a really nice place without breaking the budget. BBQ restaurants can be quite pricey for many people. However, I &was able to get a great meal here for a little more than the price of fast food. The food was really good (not top notch, but good). The atmosphere was great, and the staff were on point. We stopped in for lunch because it smelled good, as we were waiting for our stain at Sherwin Williams next door. Husband and I have never eaten at a Soulman's before and were quite surprised. Both of us ordered the two meat special (brisket and ribs) with a loaded potato. The meat was so good! The meat on the ribs fell right off the bone. The brisket was good and hot. Which is an extra plus for me I hate when it's just warm as it is most places. The potato was super soft, big, and they loaded it up with plenty of butter, sour cream, cheese, and bacon. The ribs here were incredible. It's surprisingly hard to find good ribs in Texas, let alone ribs as good as these. They are so tender that you could easily rip them apart with your fingers, and they are smoked, so they have incredible flavor as well. You don't really need BBQ sauce to go with these ribs, as unlike most ribs, they stand alone well enough without sauce. But if you want sauce, their spicy BBQ sauce is excellent. My only complaint was that the sides themselves aren't as incredible as the ribs and meat were, but given how incredible the ribs were, that's quite forgivable.
