We purchased the greens at the local farmers market. We were greeted as we entered. Sometimes when you go to a party and you don't have a lot of time to think about what booze you're going to bring, so you just show up to a place and let the selection decide for you. This is a really old school place, in fact the guy working here was giving me a history lesson on the military base and the now defunct St James Infirmary (best damn chicken wings ever - RIP), and other tidbits of Mountain View. They also have a huge selection of Portuguese food and wine. They have the best selection of Bacalhau in the Bay Area. This is one of the Bay Area's glorious smallish ethnically-specialized grocers that even attracts some shoppers from far away, for hard-to-find products. In this case the specialties are Brazilian and Portuguese and the proprietor is a lively wit (worth engaging if you value verbal repartee, or just need suggestions) -- sample dialog in last paragraph below. Justly famous for the bite-sized Brazilian cheese appetizers (exact name and spelling: pão de queijo, "cheese bread"), sold frozen in bags in various versions and flavors. As the Merck Index might warn: Caution! Addictive! Made from tapioca-starch dough with cheese added, they're a unique, denser, intenser cousin of French gougères (I see gougères occasionally in US restaurants, and people make them at home -- they're the timeless perfect simple accompaniment to good red wine). One of these days some NYT food journalist will get around to writing an article making pão de queijo trendy, then everyone in the US will be chattering about them and displaying hipness by serving them with cocktails. If you don't want to wait for all that, go to Sousa's now. I'm told the shop even keeps a toaster oven in the back to offer hot samples sometimes. I find Sousa's frozen pão de queijo cook up best in a full-size oven on a non-stick cookie sheet or cake pan, not rushed, allowed to brown gently. I've also found unusual Portuguese pastas and other ingredients at Sousa's, and there are many items I don't recognize at all. Note that Mountain View has long housed a significant ethnic-Portuguese population (many of its families having roots in the Azores), with local festivals and two Portuguese community organizations with meeting halls (IFES, SLV). Besides groceries and the said dangerously habit-forming frozen appetizers, Sousa's is a wine and liquor store with (naturally!) vast selection of Port wines especially. (Sample of actual repartee with proprietor: Me: I need some Port to cook with. He: These ports are in your price range but too good to cook with, they're for drinking. Me: Then they're good for cooking too, because if you cook with an inferior wine it shows in the flavor. He: I'll drink to that.) read more

A true gem of Mountain View that only the locals know about. If you have never been - it's not just a liquor store. They have a nice market with imports from Europe and Brazil. I believe it is the only Brazilian market in the area. Even if you have no desire to have Brazilian foods, you must try their Pao de Queijo, their cheese rolls shipped in frozen from Brazil. He even has mixed in which you can make your own Pao de Queijo, but it's hard to beat the frozen ones. They also have a great wine selection that's great in price. The owner Al who is Portuguese carries a good bit of Portuguese and Spanish wines. if you are in the mood for Port or something else liquid from the Iberian peninsula, this is the place to go. Al is a great proprietor, and we like to go here to support a local non-chain shop. We're so lucky to have this store too. Al takes special orders over the phone from us, and he has these killer cheese rolls, like you get at the Brazilian BBQ restaurant. But now, we can get them at Sousas. Yeah! Sometimes, when we go in and make a big order, Al will throw in a nice bottle of wine that he recommends, on the house. I'm calling him right now to order my 21 year old Balvenie Portwood. This means a couple of things that I love: - they have lots of esoteric brazilian liqueurs like passion fruit liqueur, pineapple liqueur, etc - they have pao de quejo!! frozen ones that you can just throw in the oven, and also a mix that lets you make your own. i can't wait to eat the frozen ones I bought I am a beer snob, so I wasn't impressed by the beer - go to bevmo and whole foods for good beer. Been coming here for years - great place to stock up on Brazilian goods that are hard to find anywhere else in the South Bay: cafe, farofa, pao de queijo, doces, requijão, linguiça - you name it. They even stock Brazilian holiday fare, like giant Easter eggs and Bauducco panettone) And very decent prices on cachaça and Portuguese wines. Best part is that Sousas operates liquor store hours which means that I can literally get my Brazilian goods whenever I desire. I have been coming here since I moved to Mountain View in April 2015. Since day one the Owner Alberto and his lovely friendly wife have always treated me as a person and not just another customer. Alberto even knows that one of my favorite beers is Steigl Pils and he will tell me most of the time if they have some in or not. I've been going to Sousa's for at least 5 years. The place has the best selection of Brazilian food stuff south of San Francisco ( probably north too, ha, ha ! ! ). Pao de queijo, farinha de mandioca, polvilho azedo, guarana, cachaca, fruit juices, candys, bon-bon, Portuguese olive oil, canned sardines, and Brazilian toiletry - even rice and beans ! So I stopped by this liquor store to purchased Powerball tickets. I had forgotten to add a number, and I have 0layed the lottery for over a decade. I filled out the missing numbers. The cashier did not tell me to go back in the line. I stood there like dumbass staring at the guy to be served. He ignored me and continued to help other customers. I decided to get back in the line. He gave me the same no smile look. He did not bother conversating or wish me good luck. The owner came up and took my tickets, process them and told the cashier, 12.00.
