Cool place to go spend some time. They have a nice planetarium show which my son loved. We love to look at the Megalodon mouth and the Mastodon. They always have different shows or exhibits that come through. I was overjoyed at the Disney Costumes exhibit that came at the end of last year! We have gone to the Children's museum across the street to let the kids get some energy out, then gone to the State museum so they can be a little calmer and more focused. Great to do on rainy or super hot days so being inside is still fun. read more

We took advantage of the CoolPASS offered by Experience Columbia, SC getting us access to the South Carolina State Museum, EdVenture Children's Museum, and the Riverbanks Zoo & Gardens and thoroughly enjoyed the weekend! Great dollar value if you're interested in all locations mentioned. The museum was easy to find and offered plenty of parking in a lot shared with the EdVenture Children's Museum. They had many exhibits that our 7 & 12 year old enjoyed but they thoroughly enjoyed the second floor galleries with the dinosaur exhibit and the habitat exhibits. Staff was very friendly and helpful when fielding our questions. They also enjoyed seeing the the history of SC through the years represented through artifacts and the changes from the colony, war, and industrialization of the city with mills and the railroad. They also have a planetarium and a 4D shows offered throughout the day. Highly recommend adding this to your itinerary if you are in the Columbia area! My family had such a wonderful time at the museum. We loved the mix of science and history. We really enjoyed the natural history and telescope exhibits. My son really enjoyed an old theater where you could see vintage cartoons. And one area you could see a picture of what the building looked like when it was a factory. They have a nice gift shop and a café. If you do not want to leave to eat lunch. We left and came back for lunch and there was still plenty of parking. We would definitely come back to the museum and see the war part that we didn't get a chance to see. read more

I am going to be honest, I never would have driven here from Charlotte if they didn't have the Disney costume exhibit happening. The museum itself was ok, the other exhibits weren't that exciting. The planetarium was cool though, definitely watch a show while you are at the museum. The Disney exhibit was awesome, the costumes are beautiful! Everything is well laid out and leveled nicely. It is handicapped accessible and kind to hose delish disabilities. The staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable. Right now they have a traveling Disney Heroes & Villains Costume exhibit (separately ticketed but worth the journey down the visual delightment). There was a nice selection on various topics-- four floors with many things to learn on each level. There's even a planetarium and a 4-D learning movie (both additional). They offer family and ondicialbpackages too. It's a nice day trip or fun for a couple trips spread out through the year. read more

This museum was full of surprises, good and some bad. The majestic post-industrial building is actually shared with a military museum, and a children's museum also lies nearby, all of these being separately administered with separate tickets to get in. Substantial parts of the building were closed, partially due to flooding. And yet, I still spent more than an hour and a half getting the overview. It certainly does a good job of capturing the state. The range of environments, the geologic history, the many natural pleasures of the states are well covered. There is a lot of controversy about the way that Southern states cover their history, but here you get substantial coverage of the Native American history, the colonial period, and the massive slave-based economy that once supported the state. An exhibit discusses the removal of a confederate flag from the nearby statehouse. There is an abundance of information. Despite the way the museum captures the state, I couldn't help but think of all the fun places in South Carolina I'd rather be than this museum in Columbia (and probably would have been, if the weather had been better). But for those who haven't been up and down the state, it'll give you ideas. read more

This was from the end of last year, but I forgot to share my review. I saw an ad for the Áróra show and I had never been here before so we planned a visit from Charleston and turned it into an overnight for fun. On the way up we stopped for lunch and then arrived shorty before our planetarium show. We really enjoyed the show and it made us want to book a trip to iceland to see the real thing. We did the double feature so we ended up going right over to the 4D theatre after. I love turtles so we did that and and it was short, but cute. The 4D elements were fun too. After that we stopped by the observatory and they let us in to check out the telescope ourselves. I had no idea what to expect from the museum portion, but it was included in out tickets so we went to check it out. Some exhibits were better than others and some were interactive for kids. I felt like I've taken in a lot of SC history at Charleston exhibits, but I found myself learning things I never knew about before. We spent about an hour walking around and exploring before heading out after a great visit. read more

Went with the family on 8/24/24 for the 2 for 1 show tickets (only on specific date) in the 4D Theatre and Planetarium. This was my 1st experience at the museum and we are new to SC. The 4D Shark show was interactive, fun, good, overall memorable...but the Live Sky "story" in the Planetarium was a huge FLOP! 0/10 What a disappointment it was. My family and I were so disappointed with the show. It's not even a show. It's a narrated story. You just look up at the stars in a simulated night sky and listen to a live person (with a very nice voice) narrate the entire time. I bet it's very cool to see a show there, however this was definitely NOT what we expected nor was it a show by any means. I do NOT recommend it, however, if I would've known we'd be learning about a few constellations, their names and the "Greek" picture behind the name, AND that it was an entirely a STILL showing, I would of opted for another real movie type show in the 4D theatre. Just saying, this was not for me or what we expected. Others may love it! The 4D show was worth the money, seats rumble somewhat, air blows over your shoulder, bubbles float in the air and you'll feel sprays of water; super cool, but not the Live Sky story. There was no movement to any objects on the screen except for Saturn enlarging and then reducing. That was literally the visual highlight of the "story" and all that I remember. I want to see a real movie type "show" in the Planetarium, but would never pay full price after that; especially for a family of 5. I suppose the museum part was worth the time and donation. Mainly artifacts, a few stuffed animals, Dino fossils etc. Never made it to the 4th floor to see the "observatory". I honestly wish I could get my money back because the shows were the main purpose we went. Ask questions before you see a show there and pay/donate because in my opinion, the website doesn't fully explain. I get it, they probably don't want to give it all away, but sometimes transparency is best. read more

I loved all of the different examples and displays of how South Carolina has come to be. We loved all the exhibits and learning. We loved going to it the dome and exploring space as well. As someone who was waiting in line on the opening day years and years ago with my grandfather, this place holds a special place in my heart. Being the first, real, HUGE museum I had ever been to, my grandfather and I would come almost every other week. However, it's 2023 and this museum has lost its soul it feels, or maybe I have lost my childhood. As of today, (July 7th 2023) the Lipscomb Gallery is closed until 2024, and a bunch of the smaller exhibits have been removed or closed (the dino dig, the train, the earthquake simulator) and none of the big exhibits on the first and second floor have changed. The original location of the gift shop has shut down, and now exists in a small corner in the back of the second floor. There are newer exhibits on the 3rd floor, mainly about sound, forests/wood and space! which are cool! I paid $13 for admission plus a Planetarium show, which isn't bad. Considering this one of Columbia's biggest, most interesting things for all ages, the whole thing is just kinda lackluster. Exhibits are dusty and some are covered up or blocked off. Staff isn't doing much. I can see how this museum would be fun for younger kids who have never been before, but you'd thing there would be new things added often, wouldn't you? I'd say the best parts of the museum are the Planetarium, the animal/taxidermy exhibits, the telescope, and confederate stuff. I'll say this: there is something for everyone here. I've never been to the military museum though. Maybe that's next. Also I thought we've moved on from the term "Indians" when referring to Native Americans... read more

A good and not too expensive way to spend a rainy afternoon! It is a pretty big museum so allotting a few hours would be prudent to see everything, but you can also pick and choose if you have restless kids like us who limit you to only an hour or two. It does a good job capturing the overall history and character of the state, and there are things for people of all ages to enjoy. I honestly did not realize there was a military museum attached, so I will have to go back to check that out! Kids museum is across the parking lot if you want that sort of hectic experience. Parking is not great if they are busy - limited spots that can be far away and up a couple stairs, so be prepared to drop off old and young ones at the door before parking. read more

Wow! We could've spent a couple more hours there! And we spent 3 hours there! There was simply so much to see & do! We bought the Sherlock Holmes exhibit addition- I had researched it ahead of time & I love puzzle solving and mysteries. I was so excited for that! We started on the top floor & worked our way down. American Furniture through 1700's through 1900's was more interesting than I would've guessed- although I did appreciate antiques. My favorite was the shoo-fly chair, an ingenious invention of a chair with a pedal that worked a long stick above the seat to wave back and forth creating a breeze & keeping the flies away you work. The telescope museum & observatory were so cool! I looked at the Sun! Wish I was there for a nighttime viewing. 4th floor also had plenty of exhibits of revolutionary war, civil war and plantation life. 3rd floor- while lot of everything! Transportation, textiles, agriculture, forestry, industry & communications. And! The Apollo exhibit- oh yes! Love love love stuff like this! 2nd floor had the Sherlock Holmes exhibit & solve the crime /scene area. This is where hubby ditched me to go downstairs to the separate military museum. His theory was he wouldn't like the "game" and he assumed I wouldn't enjoy the military. Wrong on both accounts. It took me longer to solve the mystery since I was slung it by myself- everyone else flung through had in average- 4 people. However- they groups were cutting corners. The layout was out of order because of the space, but I loved the exhibit. Hubby showed back up in time for the blood splatter science- which he thought was so cool. You're welcome! 2nd floor also had dinosaur exhibits- wonderful fun. 1st floor had the planetarium- we didn't participate- but that's cool, and art exhibit & the massive museum store. It's a nice museum when you walk in you get your tickets and then when you walk down more they have a military museum in back that is a separate museum. We did the museum in 2 in a half hours the floors we're interesting they have renovations going on so it will be fun to go back when their done. South Carolina State Museum is, as a state museum all about the state of South Carolina, with the possible exception of the planetarium. There is a strong emphasis on South Carolina agriculture, early industry, and wars. On the war count it seems that South Carolina has been involved in all of them and there is a separate Confederate Relic Room dedicated almost exclusively to matters involving the Civil War. It's a beautiful building with everything about it appear new, bright, well planned and done right. I usually fall in love with museums but for whatever reason I couldn't get excited about things here. However, though I can't say I'm a fan, it does rate Four Stars. read more

I have two reviews for the museum. One is for the actual museum and he second is for he Oz event. I have been when there isn't an event and for Oz. The museum has plenty of parking and offer a military discount. There is also a cafe. The museum is clean and mostly well maintained. A few displays had broken buttons but for the most part everything is intact. The displays are interesting and cover local history, dinosaurs, ocean animals, wars, etc. On average we spend 2-3 hours here. The Cotton Mill Exchange store is awesome! From SC gifts to books to clothing. I'm sure you'll find something to as a memento. Now for Oz- Well, I have two opinions on it. If you don't frequently visit the museum, then yes stop by. If you're strictly going for the Oz, it may be worth passing over this year. We had a blast because 1. My sister is a diehard Oz fan. Borderline problematic; in a good way. 2. We just moved back home so everything is exciting to my boys. 3. My sis said it wasn't comparable to other years (no outside vendors, no music, no beer) 4. The 4d show was awesome. That part was worth it to me. But we also played in the museum for 2.5 hours after we did the Oz part. The crafts were well thought out (collage, witches brew - slime, experiment to make witch disappear, make poppies) All in all we had a great time in just not sure the Oz event was five stars this year. read more

This is one of the museums that I visited 6yrs ago when I moved to SC. We visited all the history, govt bldgs., parks, art, libraries, farms and museums on the weekends for a few mths, great way to get yourself familiar to a community. Most of them have coupons for all or free for military. SC museum is about the state of SC's history strong emphasis on war, industry, dinosaurs, ocean animals, and agriculture. Adults and children need to learn your history since we don't get the full truth in school. Great way to spend a Saturday in the COLA. The museum is a pretty good size bldg. lots of parking, clean, bathrooms are well kept. Great displays giving all the details of events in history. Don't forget the Cotton Exchange for a little shopping or books. Your kids will love this outing! They offer programs thru out the yr. read more

Went to this museum last month and was very impressed at the sheer breadth of material this institution has on display. From prehistoric animals that roamed the area millions of years ago to the early stages of the state's history, it literally has it all. The State's shameful history of slavery is on full unflinching display here. There are two versions of Eli Whitney's cotton gin, copies of the state's declaration of secession and the contributions of native Americans here as well. The astronomy exhibit is is incredibly extensive as well. It has an observatory with a very polite employee who was more than happy to to show us the observatory and explain how it observed our Sun on a daily basis. You really have to see it to believe it. read more

Throughout the museums many cultural history exhibits, there are a lot of very intentional gaps about how European settlers developed the land of SC. While there is a section in the museum dedicated to discussing the lives of slaves, as well as lots of Native American artifacts, the language used to discuss their lives and the harm done to them is downplayed. The focus on European settlers as heroes who conquered and developed the land with little acknowledgement of the harm caused along the way is unsettling at best. While it's clear most of the museum hasn't been funded/updated in decades, State institutions have a responsibility to educate and tell THE WHOLE STORY, not just the parts of it that make the State look good. I've been to plenty of state history museums who are able to more effectively do that. read more

I really enjoyed our time at the museum! This is my second trip and the only thing I'd do differently is start at the top with the newer exhibits and work my way down to the older ones. He's the dirt on the clean, 'cause I know that's important to folks: 1.) Masks are required indoors, it's a city ordinance not a museum "rule". 2.) Plenty o' sanitizer throughout the museum as well as lovely reminders to social distance and use your common sense when venturing out during the pandemic. 3.) No food or drink allowed throughout the museum. I don't think that's a change but it will definitely cut back on the spread of germs, in my opinion. 4.) Bathrooms were very clean and every other stall was closed to keep people separated. 5.) The Planetarium was up and running with an employee staggering people inside and planning out the seating arrangements ahead of time to...you guessed it, socially distance. 6.) Sadly, all the cool "hands-on" experiences were prohibited. I'm not surprised, it was expected. They do have mini movies throughout the museum but the seating areas are roped off. However, scan a code and watch it from the comfort of your phone and at the leisure of 6 feet from other people. I thinks that's a pretty comprehensive explanation...yep. So moving along, I really enjoyed their newer exhibit on the USA's foray into the space race. It had a great setup with a lot of neat ways to engage with the history and pay homage to the native South Carolinians who have participated in the space race. My inner child was sad that I couldn't touch the spinning sphere that seemed to transform into different planets. Maybe in the future (cue trombone, wah-wah). I'm conclusion (harkening back to my days as a new writer and signaling to the audience that I'm wrapping up very obviously), it was worth the trip for my family! I'm not from the south, if I was I think I would've been more interested in some of the exhibits...just being honest. The lower levels need some tender loving care, as they seem outdated/old compared to the upper floor sparkle that housed the Apollo exhibit and Women's Suffrage. Check it out and if you aren't smitten, simply walk across the parking lot to the children's museum aka Edventure...or to the zoo up the way! Lots of choices, lots of fun...do it up! read more

I really enjoyed the planetarium and the telescope on the top floor! Some of the exhibits are a bit boring if you are not into history. I love science museums, but that's just my preference. If you go, make sure to stop in the classroom outside of the telescope and meet Mr. Whitehouse! My husband and I had such a great time speaking with him! He is so knowledgeable about space and has so much information to share. You can see how passionate he is about his work! We don't have kids, but I can guarantee that he would be a hit amongst the kiddos! What a nice person! I don't normally write reviews, but I had to because we enjoyed his presentation so much! The museum should advertise space education more so that he can teach more often! He has a gift! read more

The State Museum has some quality displays: the train, space exhibit, animal exhibits for different areas of the state. Sadly, the hands on displays haven't changed (possibly since it opened) and show wear not to mention too similar. What was the biggest shock on Good Friday was the lack of employees or docents. The lady collecting fees had never been to the 3rd floor and referred us to the floor layout for questions about what would appeal to our young people. The only other non-guests we saw were 2 employees in the gift shop. Their supervisor showed up at closing. The gift shop and the ladies in there were always so friendly and helpful. These 2 ladies were withdrawn (almost afraid) of customers. The main visitor bathroom was gross and the floors had not be cleaned in months. What a shame this museum is not being staffed with knowledgeable eager history focused staff or housekeepers. Who is in charge now?? read more

While visiting Columbia, I mistakenly came here because I thought it was the Children's Museum, and I'm glad I did! The staff was very sweet, including at the cafe. I didn't realize how much I could still learn about the history of South Carolina and the South in general, so I was very pleased with this great learning tool. My toddler LOVED the train set diorama and the life size houses. The giant shark and the interactive Wizard of Oz exhibits were awesome, and "the Yellow brick road" photo op at the Oz gift shop was a nice touch. The main gift shop was one of the best of its kind - I got Civil War coloring books and South Carolina crayons for my daughter to keep busy while at the hotel, and I couldn't tell you who enjoyed them more. read more

They only have 2 bathroom stalls open on each floor. The rest are closed for renovations. If you are ont the 4th floor there are none open. . When i tried to tell an employee that my kid used one of the out of order toilets before I could stop her he told me he wasn't a plumber. Like no crap. The state museum is like home to me. I've been going there since I was a wee babe wandering through on elementary school field trips. I still enjoy hopping on the train, wandering through the general store and checking in with Finn, the giant shark! (That's his actual name. We asked one of the staff members, Gabe, and he was not only very knowledgeable but also extremely kind to answer all our random questions.) As I have grown up, so has the museum. While it's still fun to check out the permanent exhibits it's definitely exciting to visit when there are new, traveling exhibits. The museum also hosts many fun events for the grown up crowd including Growl at the Moon and Museum Roadshow. They also have the new planetarium and 4D theater which are not to be missed. Be sure to check out the collection of American made telescopes and astronomical equipment - the largest collection of its kind in the world...the whole world, peeps! Columbia is so cool. Big tip: the first Sunday of each month is First Citizens First Sunday and you only have to pay $1 for general admission! read more

I love this museum!!!! It houses 4 floors of creepy historical permanent and changing exhibits, which include dinosaurs, the revolutionary and civil wars, technology, science, African American history, etc., as well as the infamous hanging megalodon! Taking school field trips to this museum 20yrs ago was always a treat! I remember loving the 3rd floor with all the interactive displays (many of the displays are STILL here which is really nostalgic for me - even though some are broken/out of order). The 4th floor was pretty cool too (the old school house and general store). They've recently renovated the first floor (to accommodate the planetarium). The gift shop is nice and bigger, and has a lot of natural light coming in now (I kinda miss the old shop). The second floor still has the small cafe, that I've never tried, as well as a new 4-D theater. I think it's really cool to see all the new additions as well as the old crusty stuff I remember as a child. Recently, we went specifically for the planetarium (for $12 additional to the regular entry fee for 3 people, we were able to watch the two "movies" they were playing that day). The films were on rotation every other hour. Really neat experience (took me back to the days of Gibbs Planetarium which I sooooo miss)! It's a rare treat for my family to get out to the State Museum with Edventure right next to it (my son has his preference lol), but when we do, it's nice to take a few hours to enjoy each floor. Go early, you'll feel like you've got the museum all to yourself. Really nice and we will return...most likely with grandchildren. Lots of great exhibits in this former textile mill building. Lots of parking and there is an excellent children's museum across the parking lot. The exhibits are, natch, focused on South Carolina history. Lots of great Civil War areas to include a mock-up of the Henley submarine, recently raised from the depths. Info on the mill towns so them common to the southeast after they were relocated from the northeast to take advantage of the then cheaper labor. They do have docents who will take you on a tour, which we used. it was just wife and I so we had a complete tour and lots of additional information. The coverage took in all four floors so we will go back to go into more depth with the exhibits. Children will love it as much of the exhibits can be touched, like a Revolutionary War musket. Recommend you come early, buy your tickets and get on a tour. Then you know the lay of the land and can return to areas where you have interest. Parking is plentiful. The snack bar makes sandwiches to order, meaning that you order what is one of the offerings and they put it together and bring it to your table. Clean area and priced about right...not like at an airport. South Carolina did a great job in putting this together. One of the better museums we have experienced. read more

As a history relic, I went here with my dad. Walking up the stairs from the outside we were impressed with the architecture and modern look. Once inside that was a different story. Paid for admission and proceeded straight ahead to the war room part of the museum. "Sorry, this is a special exhibit there's an additional fee" ok- we paid. It was ok but wasn't worth an extra fee. Main museum areas were boring. It didn't flow well and most interactive equipment was broken or so worn it was living on a prayer. It would've been nice to have guides around to ask questions to or to get people excited about what was going on. I also felt knickled and dimed. Everything was an extra fee. I won't go back again- it was a waste of time and money. For a bigger city this museum doesn't compare to its competition. read more

Come visit the SC State Museum for a super cool exhibit on all the Hollywood and independent films shot in the Palmetto State. The exhibit is only $3 over the regular museum admission fee of $5. Here you can check out memorabilia, scripts, film props, and behind the scene bloopers from Oscar winning movies: Forrest Gump, Cold Mountain and The Abyss, as well as American classics, such as The Patriots, Days of Thunder, Prince of Tides, Renaissance Man, The Great Santini, Die Hard With a Vengeance and the most recent Leatherheads. Fun things to see: 1. Script sketches from Forrest Gump 2. Get a good laugh watching several edited clips depicting classic scenes actually shot in South Carolina even though the movies imply otherwise. Like the drive over "a New York bridge" you guessed it was Cooper River bridge; or the one from Renaissance Man's army post clearly shot at Fort Jackson. 3. Tom Cruise's jumpsuit from Days of Thunder, the scaffold gallows from The Patriots, a full size replica of the Hunley submarine, Eddie Murphy's fat suit, set pieces from Die Hard with a Vengeance and the football team's mascot from Radio. The exhibit is going on through October 19, 2008. State Museum is open Tuesday - Saturday 10 AM - 5 PM; Sunday 1 - 5 PM. Parking is FREE. State's Museum main attraction (besides Hollywood exhibit) is the replica of H.L. Hunley, the world's first submarine to sunk a combat enemy ship...well that was the only thing it did, the Hunley disappeared with it only to be recovered few years ago!
