TLDR: Seem to have a business plan of hiring new veterinarians to save on labor costs without providing vital oversight, support, or mentorship, leading to extremely dangerous care choices. This practice burns out young veterinarians, sets them up for failure, and harms patients. I took my animals to this practice 2020-2023. Over that time I noticed a lot of staff turnover and unhappy techs. At a veterinary practice happy employees usually means high quality care. Workers can seldom do their best under harsh labor conditions. Dr Phillips helped initially when my puppy started displaying consistent aggression that did not respond to training, management, sleep schedule changes, exercise changes, or redirection. She prescribed fluoxetine (which takes 6-10 weeks to kick in), and clonidine (a fast-acting med). When the clonidine peaked, my puppy could exist without profound inescapable terror for roughly an hour before once again becoming panicked and impossible to sooth. I requested more frequent clonidine so that both my dog and I could have a more reasonable quality of life while we waited 6 weeks for her UC Davis Veterinary Behavior appointment. Although Dr Phillips has no behavior certifications beyond "fear free", she reviewed a few short videos of my puppy and confidently declared that my dog was "displaying mostly normal puppy behavior" and that "sometimes, as owners, we unintentionally encourage bad behavior." She pronounced my dog's body language to be "loose", ignoring her unmistakable whale eyes and tight face. Dr Phillips knew I had significant experience raising retriever puppies. She knew this dog's highly skilled training team was out of ideas. Yet, Dr Phillips knew more about my puppy's state of mind from a few short videos than either me or her training team knew from countless hours of direct care. Dr Phillips decided I caused these problems because I would rather sedate my "mostly normal" puppy than practice basic training and management. After deciding my puppy's fear and aggression were simply handler error, Dr Phillips not only declined to increase her clonidine dose, but declined to refill it at all. I had three doses left of the only thing that made it possible to safely interact with my dog. But Dr Phillips had completed a few rotations with veterinary behaviorists during vet school (which she referred to as "a lot of training") and she thought it was appropriate to allow my puppy to experience extreme panic 24/7 for the next 6 weeks in case the clonidine "changed her brain chemistry". Never mind the brain chemistry changes that might occur from 6 weeks of extreme prolonged panic. Luckily, a kind soul at another practice had mercy on us and prescribed enough clonidine for us to make it to the veterinary behavior appointment in one piece. The team at UC Davis diagnosed my puppy with generalized anxiety (based in territoriality, fear, overarousal, and resources) and interdog aggression (based in fear). They explained that my puppy's frequent bites were her way of coping with constant panic by redirecting it onto me as her primary caretaker. My puppy was a serious case for her age and would need significant management and medication for the rest of her life, otherwise she would be a danger to me and to the public. They explained that allowing her to panic throughout her puppyhood would have severe consequences for her brain chemistry, and they increased her clonidine dose to protect her from that fate. To be clear: although Dr Phillips put myself, my puppy, and the public in danger with her reckless overconfidence, I do not hold her personally responsible for this mistake. Dr Phillips had been a practicing veterinarian for just over a year at the time and it was clear she had extremely limited mentorship and support. When I later shared my puppy's diagnoses and prognosis with Dr Phillips, I didn't even get a reply. This tells me that this practice doesn't have experienced veterinarians following up on concerning decisions made by new veterinarians. Nobody is walking new veterinarians through reflecting on cases that don't go well, learning from mistakes, or addressing issues that arise with clients who have been with the practice for years. Thanks to the kind veterinarian who took over care urgently without any previous patient relationship, my dog did not seriously injure anyone in the six weeks Dr Phillips wanted her to be functionally unmedicated. But I am extremely concerned that this practice seeks out new veterinarians for cheap labor while ignoring their consequent mentorship responsibility. A less determined dog owner with fewer resources may have accepted Dr Phillips' assessment with potentially disastrous results. If you are considering taking your pet here, proceed with caution. read more

If you've never traveled to Hawaii with an animal, you have no idea the leaps and bounds that are required. This takes serious time and careful planning to coordinate with the Hawaii Department of Agriculture's Animal Quarantine. Dr. Adam Schawel and team will provide the web link so you can read all the background, guidance, and checklist of requirements before you can fly your four-legged family member into Hawaii. Be sure to read the information carefully because each island has a different procedure involved. Before we scheduled our flight to Honolulu, we communicated with South Davis Veterinary Center to initiate the Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralization test, which measures the response to the rabies vaccine. This is a key element when traveling to Hawaii and the lab results may take up to 30 days to come back. Per Animal Quarantine rules, our four-legged family member also needed an approved tick treatment from the list of acceptable products. This needs to be administered by the veterinarian, within a certain time frame before the flight into Hawaii. Not sure how many veterinarians in Davis are USDA certified, but Dr. Adam Schawel is USDA certified and has helped many pet owners with their certificate of Veterinary inspection in order to fly into other states or countries. TLDR; Dr. Carlisle is the Giant Breed Queen. The vets and staff problem solve and treat patients effectively and conveniently. They provide treatment plans based on what you can afford. Top notch care. Top notch clinic. I got time I'm in Quarantine read; Listen,I've had HORRID experiences with vets. My last Great Dane had some kind of skin disease I paid thousands to diagnose and never got an answer...it caused Mast cell tumors that were mis diagnosed as Lipoma's I had to throw a fit about to get biopsies. She then got bone cancer 6 months later at 4 years old and suffered immensely because of improper diagnosis & refusal to prescribe pain meds of that condition as well. I met DR. CARLISLE at Happy Tails in Vacaville after my last dane Scarlett passed away. I got a new Great Dane pup in March of 2019. Harlow :) and Dr. Carlisle was her first vet visit. I was astounded at her loving, caring, knowledgeable service! She educated me on proper nutrition for my specific breed of dog (she has a degree in K9 nutrition) she explained how calcium and phosphorus ratios affect a Giant Breeds bone growth and told me that a lot of suppliers don't even list it on the package. I had been giving Scarlett Call of The Wild which has a SUPER high calcium/phosphorus ratio....which causes bones to grow to quickly and can possibly contribute to bone cancer in Danes. (She didn't say it caused it she said there have been studies done that suggest it, I myself looked them up and she's right! I had no idea!!) I live in Fairfield! I went back 3 more times after she left to Davis and started to experience the flippant behavior I'd seen with Scarlett. So, I asked where Dr. Carlisle went and made an appointment at South Davis when Harlow continued to get reoccurring UTI's (4) and the other clinic refused to prescribe antibiotics without me bringing her in to get her weight. Even though she'd been there 2 weeks prior & I was leaving in 2 hours for Mexico. Then at a later date they told me she needed laser therapy or surgery for a tail tip injury ($1800) & there were no other options. South Davis prescribed plenty of antibiotics and continued to follow up on Harlow's condition. She hasn't had a UTI since. Dr. Carlisle also treated her tail tip injury in the office. Gave me PLENTY of supplies to treat it at home at a reasonable cost and wrote me an RX for GENERIC not expensive name brand meds I could get filled at any pharmacy for $5-$10. She was VERY patient with Harlow even though she's a SPAZ! And spent over an hour with me and 2 other vets techs taping up and treating her mangled tail. It healed right up! No surgery necessary! Bc I live in Fairfield this clinic has made it very easy for me to get refills at my local pharmacy and has no problem ensuring I am never inconvenienced. I got frustrated with the tail thing after Harlow are-inured it and I literally tried to make an appt to cut it off (don't judge me lol) Dr. Carlisle talked me out of the expensive surgery, though it was an opportunity for them to make $ and my other vet would have happily taken a machete to it, explaining that it was not in Harlow's best interest. I took her back and another vet took the same care Carlisle did and her tail is healed once again! I LOVE this vet and now send my Boyfriend there with his cats and my mom there with her ankle biter chihuahua "Spike". I will continue to trust the vets here and the excellent tech staff...most of which have extensive college educations relating to Animal science. It's worth the drive! I can't believe I have not yet left a review. We've been coming here with our fur babies for about fifteen years. I can't say enough wonderful things about this place! ALL of the doctors and staff are incredible. They've taken care of four of our dogs and five cats over this time frame. All of our dogs have LOVED it there. Like is this even normal? But everyone makes them feel so comfortable. They show your animals the same love you would. I knew I found the right place when my Labrador was in a lot of pain. The vet (I think it was Dr. Carlisle) came into the room and sat on the floor and just cuddled with my boy. She was able to do most of her exam while he just ate up the love (or maybe the peanut butter which was squirted on the side the table!) The care is second to none. While they do most things, they aren't afraid to refer you to a specialist if need me. One of my dogs had ocular cancer and they were quick to get us into to UC Davis. The care is comprehensive. If you are looking for cheap, this isn't the place. However, they do give you a range in your estimate, so you know what you're getting yourself into. They are very thorough, and I'm willing to pay for that expertise and certainty. Everyone is incredible. MAJOR kudos to the lab techs who have to deal with my formerly feral Moose (aka "Bitch Cat") who could remove a body part if you let her. And my dear "afraid of his shadow" Spatdz, who is frozen in fear every time he needs to go. In every case, they were given lots of love and reassurance. Last year we had to say goodbye to our labrador/border collie mix. It was heartbreaking. However, it was done in the most loving and compassionate way. We were allowed to be present (this was in the height of the pandemic) and the doctor did everything he could to make it as peaceful for both Spencer AND us. Someone mentioned that South Davis Vet doesn't give out prescriptions to other places--this isn't true. You can go pick up your prescription and send it to Chewy or Pet Meds. Or they'll even call it in to Costco for you. Further, they are very responsive via email, so there is rarely the need to even pick up the phone to call. We've only been to South Davis Veterinary Center two times. We've moved here from El Cerrito/Berkeley. (In the East Bay--for 10 years--there was an elder vet (Dr. Hahn) at Richmond Vet whom we loved...and then he retired. We never were able to fit with his replacement. How happy we are to have found Dr. Yackey and everyone at the South Davis Veterinary Center. My little dog had a foxtail in her paw. After her minor surgery, when they came out the door with her, although she's anxious ---- her behavior connoted she'd been treated kindly, thoughtfully. (I found everyone to be welcoming & thoughtful to this human too). BECAUSE she has been raised on a raw food diet (wisely balanced--that's one reason her coat glistens & people think she much younger --). I was happy that Dr. Yackey didn't blink an eye when I told him this. He never suggested any of the dry kibble/Science Diet products. AND, most importantly--he never went off on a quasi -religious spiel about how raw food is dangerous, etc. (OMGawd I've heard this too many times!) Also, he never suggested I 'update' her innoculations--- Rabies Vax is all we update (at Petco) because research suggests the extra vaccines (Not required by law) can pull down your dog's health. Dr. Yackey just said "ok" and reached over to pet my dog. Gratefully, we consider this our clinic. -- I deducted a star because we've only been there 2 x... but I feel that, at last, we've found a vet we can work with. read more

We wanted to really like this place, as it's close to our neighborhood. We took our new rescue dog there, and told them she looked like she was gaining weight and felt she might be pregnant. The doctor was super young like a veterinary Doogie Howser. After exam, he insisted she was not pregnant. He suggested that she receive all her vaccines that evening, and wanted to schedule a spay surgery. We agreed to two of the shots but not the spay. Three weeks later, our little rescue dog had a litter of 5 gorgeous puppies. One of the vaccines should not have been given to a pregnant dog. We are so thankful they are all healthy, but we will not be back to South Davis vet. The veterinarian did not listen to us or our concerns, and we were right about our dog...even though we were made to feel ignorant. read more

I've been bringing my sweet rescue doggo to South Davis Vet since I got her two years ago. When I got her she was riddled with a seemingly endless list of small ailments. So when I brought her in our, supposed to be 30 minute, visit was much longer than anticipated. That said, they took the time to look over each of my concerns and address them all. They prescribed her a medication for flea allergy that has fundamentally changed her skin condition. In addition, they gave me ALL the options for a few other of her problems not just the expensive options, which was remarkable. They've continued to go above and beyond to help with her issues and I am constantly impressed with them. They even let me come in and scan a stray dogs microchip so that we could find their owner. read more

They are the place that's ever called to see how my cat is doing after a visit. I've taken Quito to three vets. I appreciate how loving they are to him. My cat seems to have some skin problem and sometimes gets bald patches in his fur. The first time he had a break out, they got it under control right away. It was on his face which made more freaky. The second time it happened around his tail and hind legs. He's allergic to something, but he been getting treated with their prescription. He's doing a lot better now. My dog, Nisa, and I had a wonderful experience here. She got her first wellness exam done, as well as a heartworm test. The information I had written about Nisa beforehand was throughly reviewed, and I got all of my questions answered about ways to improve my dog's well-being. She's been licking her paws, biting her nails, and scratching herself, so with their recommendations, I bought a medicated shampoo to treat her irritation, a better flea and tick control than the one I was using, and chewables to start her on heartworm prevention. While their first estimate of the tests and products was on the pricier end, Nicole Bell and Dr. Adam Schawel worked with me to take off a few things to ensure that I was buying what I truly needed. I also learned that they are chihuahua-lovers, so I knew Nisa was in good hands! They even gave her a toy at the end and a cute little bag with her name on it surrounded by hearts :) I'm very happy that I took my dog here, and I'm glad I'm walking away with more knowledge and products to use to take care of my dog! read more

My first vet visit with my first cat! (thankfully just for a check-up) It was super easy to schedule an appointment over the phone. Also, as a student, I was thrilled to learn they are open on Saturdays. The clinic was easy to find and there was plenty of parking close to the entrance. The waiting area was nice and open, perfect for both the furbabes and their humans. Vet tech Josh assisted with getting my cat into the exam room and was gentle with getting his vitals. My cat got on real well with Dr. Cassy! The examination was a breeze including a shot to keep him up to date on his vaccines. Dr. Cassy answered any questions that I thought up during the check-up, and I was assured that I was doing alright as a first time cat mom. There wasn't any upsell on unnecessary tests or products, and the bill at the end was quite reasonable. The front desk staff also helped me with getting his microchip number along with the instructions on how to update the information. Overall, my cat and I had a positive experience with this vet clinic. Now my cat has his vaccination up to date and a clean bill of health, so back to couch cuddles and playtime for this one. read more

I have never written a critical review but your pets life is at stake. I took my animal in for an exam and was told a dental with around 4 extractions was needed. I made that appointment and brought him in 0and came back hours later to pick up an extremely drugged animal who had 0 extractions and a large bill for "cleaning and assessing" I was told they had another appointment that following week to do extractions. So that's 2 doses of the very dangerous anaesthesia plus additional drugs, medications and another bill (over half of which is anaesthesia on both bills.) I called TEN VETERINARIANS and was told by all 10 that this was HIGHLY UNUSUAL and very dangerous to the pet. It is never ok to put an animal under unless vital and is done only in very extreme cases. What it does accomplish is allowing the vet to charge over double in every case and to book many more dentals per day because now they can hurry through to the next. I called again to ask if I scheduled my older cat who I already knew needed 2 extractions would they be able to minimize anaesthesia to 1 time since no need for an assessment and they said no this was for all dentals and important for time allotment. In 25 years of pets and more dentals than I can count this is the only practice to behave so unethically. Anaesthesia kills and you are changing to hurt our animals twice and unnecessarily. I don't need Dr's Yackey response because of the 10 vets I called 1 was a animal dentist in San Francisco and the other was a veterinary hospital and they both recommend at min changing vets and reporting the practice for review. I am SO disappointed but so grateful my animal is alive. read more

They are fantastic! Super accommodating, helpful and knowledgable. They have gone above and beyond for me and my dog several times. I also super appreciate their hours with them being open on evenings and Saturdays, which makes life so much easier for all of us who work during the weekday. My dog used to be awesome at the vet, but then a different vet clinic basically ruined him, by being extremely rough and not letting him warm up at all before handling. For the first time in his life, he had to get muzzled at the vet because of this other vet, so I switched vets. I'm happy to say that my dog is back to his happy self! South Davis Veterinary Center listened to my concerns and made visits super positive for my dog, and helped him get his trust back. Right now I live close to this clinic, but I will continue taking my pets here even after I move away, because I know that they will give my pets awesome care and will also be super helpful towards me. I am writing specifically about the new dental policy of clean and assess with general anesthesia and then any extractions done on the next visit also under general anesthesia. I actually have had very positive visits at this clinic and had 2 cats dentals with many extractions (one cat was 17) and they were done in 1 visit and it went fine. I brought in my other cat who was both in pain and had exposed roots and obviously needed teeth removed and I was told at that visit he needed 4 possibly 5 extracted...I came back to get him after his procedure and was totally unclear as to why the work wasn't done and was told that just like people, first xrays and cleaning then later if work was deemed necessary it would be scheduled so they could plan the time needed. That ended up being MANY hundreds of dollars extra. It wasn't necessary because the problems were both evident and noted at the initial visit. My father was a dentist for 38 years and said yes we do xrays and exam 1st because 0 people are put under for those procedures and that his career would have been 2 minutes if he had charged to put people unnecessarily under and that anesthesia is extremely dangerous and he asked if I would do that for my child. No, I would not. I did ask why several times and I always got the same response so I called my old vet who happens to be one of the very few actual veterinary dentists who chose that as a specialty and who has treated all but 1 of my cats and was told the same thing the last poster said...no, it is not ok to do anesthesia 2x unless it is an extreme case. It is a very risky choice especially considering many cats with dental disease are either elderly or have other health issues at hand. I really liked everyone I dealt with at both clinics but being charged double for something deadly is just not something I am comfortable with. Honestly my bill was mostly anesthesia and all the supporting drugs and fluids and I could have used that money to help my other animals with future needed treatments and it was totally unnecessary. If anything had happened to my sweet kitty over something so routine I honestly would have never forgiven myself. read more

I have had nothing but amazing experiences at this Veterinary Center. From the first appointment, everything went smoothly and this clinic instantly stood out from all my previous veterinary experiences. All of the staff were extremely friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable and went above and beyond to make both my cat and myself feel comfortable. The examination rooms are spacious and immaculately clean and have floor to ceiling windows to help your pet feel less claustrophobic; they even allow you to let your pet wander the room when not in the middle of the examination! This was especially helpful when I brought another of my cats who is older and extremely anxious. ​ Dr. Collins took his time getting to know my cats and even allowed my wife and I to ask questions about our second cat we had at home during our appointment for our first cat. He was very thorough and took his time explaining all options available and possibilities to any and all of our concerns and was happy to answer all of our questions in detail. Dr Bradley is amazing! I came in as a new client as my cat was vomiting. It ended up that he had a linear foreign body that was stuck in his intestine and ended up going in immediately for surgery. Dr Bradley was very caring, prompt and informative about his care. The staff was very friendly and made sure I was informed throughout the whole procedure. They are renovating the West Center soon so I definitely look forward to going back to it once it is built again! I have been extremely pleased with the quality of care, genuine kindness of the staff and the ability to be present with my pet during the examination. Being able to converse with the doctor during an appointment is a feature that most veterinary facilities no longer offer. I feel this decreases not only my anxiety about my dog's healthcare but the margin for miscommunication, as well. read more

I've been taking my cat here for at least a year or so. I started while I lived in Davis, continued after I moved to Elk Grove, and will still keep going while I live in Fair Oaks because they are worth the drive. The staff are very friendly and professional. My cat has gotten two upper respiratory infections in the past year and they did their best to provide my with the best treatment options while making sure that I'm not breaking the bank. For the second infection, which was really bad, they discussed all my options and about how much they would cost me. When the azithromycin didn't work, the doctor did some labs to try and figure out what was causing it so we didn't just pump my cat full of meds she may not have needed. They were very nice and even gave me a discount on my second office visit for this infection. While we were never able to determine what was causing the infection because all the tests came back negative, the doxycycline that we ended up deciding on cleared my cat right up so we didn't have to do the expensive nasal scope exam or X-rays. They even called to check up on my cat to make sure she was doing better. Between their great prices (and their desire to make sure we didn't do any extra testing or procedures if we didn't need to), great hours (open til 8pm), and great staff, this is an excellent choice for a veterinarian. read more

THIS VET KILLED MY DOG. I brought my 1 and a half year old french bulldog in to this center to have his ears cleaned. About an hour later I received a call that my pet was receiving CPR and to come immediately to the vet. They informed me that he was not cooperative with the cleaning so they decided to sedated him to make it easier (they had called my mom for sedation permission as I was at work. As he had received the same anesthesia when he was neutered, she did not see the issue with agreeing.) My dog was dead by the time I arrived at the vet. The vet pretended that he was still working to keep my dog alive, however after nearly an hour of CPR there was no question that my baby had been gone for some time. He was so afraid of a lawsuit it was pathetic. I blame both the supervising veterinarian for not being more cautious while sedating a bulldog and the technicians for their lack of experience with "difficult" dogs. My frenchie was a sweetheart but became very nervous at the vet. I often had to hold him down myself when taking his temperature because the vet techs were too "afraid" that he might bite them. If none of you have seen a 1 year old frenchie they are quite small and as a 5'1" girl myself I was able to restrain him minimal no effort. As a pre-vet student at Davis I had always used UCD Vet Center but decided to give a local business a try. If you love you pet STAY AWAY. UC Davis is well known for a reason, and had I stayed with them my dog would likely still be alive today. I actually worked in the UC Davis clinic, where we would rarely sedate a large dog, let alone a nervous frenchie. I will never get my baby back because of the negligence of South Davis Vet. I hope that no one else will ever have to experience what I did. read more

Wonderful staff from my initial phone calls to schedule my dog, to the visit itself, to the follow up. Everyone seemed on the same team, supporting each other, and taking care of the many issues being addressed. I appreciated the way I was always kept informed. The staff was sweet, always on the ball, and doing their best. They obviously care, and it could be felt in their interactions with me and especially with my often timid dog. They worked with her on the floor, all three of them! Having her comfortable greatly facilitated them seeing the different issues to address as all her "at home" trouble signs could show themselves (instead of her just crouching against me on a table where she knows she doesn't belong.) This is a nice vet place, but the only reason why I go there, is b/c it's close to my house. The vet and vet techs are nice and knowledgable, the facility is clean, and again it's close to my house. The cons, the veterinarians tend to upsell you on more shots or vaccines your pet doesn't really need, but they may want you to get. When I bring my dog in, I am constantly reminded about shots, or vaccines I should get my dog to have, but he doesn't really need. I have another dog, who is 10, and I haven't given her any shots or vaccines since she was 3, she is healthy and looking fine. It's a good enough vet center, as long as you don't mind the upselling the vets tend to do. read more

I showed up a few mins. early and although I'd been a client for over twenty years, they played the technology card;"Our computers don't allow us to access the other computers" therefore they asked that I fill out the "new client" form. Because I didn't fill out the form completely they asked that I give them all the personal information. Well, this was 4:35pm so I suggested that they take the dog in and I'll run home to get the required info. The young lady had to go back into the office and check with the Dr./new owner. She came back and said that would work. "Due to protocol", she had a little leash that she brought out and put onto my hound. It was not a leash with a snap, it was a loop that tightened if the dog resisted. This dog knows about the vets office and he wasn't about to let this masked little girl drag him in the office. ("Due to protocol" pet owners are not allowed in the clinic.) I'm wearing a mask and take my temperature all the time. Regardless, she was losing the tug of war and was choking the crap out of my dog. I stepped in and ended the contest and left without having the foxtail removed from the mutts ear. He was hacking a little from the throttling the assistant gave him but he's a tough SOB and he was as happy as a clam to of showed those little girls who's going to take him anywhere. Nice people but not as smart as this man's dog. "Due to protocol", I will not ever take another animal to this clinic. "You can't fix stupid." P.S. I took the hound to "Banfield Clinic" in Vacaville the next morning and the foxtail was removed without incident. Dear Doctor, Your UCD educated "technicians" choked my dog with your lame leash and are, in my opinion, obviously not qualified to handle my dog. The next morning the technicians at Banfield Clinic had no problem leading him into their facility and two male Drs. easily removed the foxtail with no sedation. I was charged an extra $26 because these men had to hold him firmly so that they could get him to submit. He had a scratch on his right eyeball in January. I was holding him but he submitted to the lady vet promptly. She has over thirty years experience. My dog won the tug of war with that nice young lady that was unintentionally strangling him, due to your protocols. My dog weighs 53.3lbs. so I would say, that that nice young lady was not quite big enough. My dog believes as I do, we must peacefully defy ignorance and brutality. read more
