TLDR; Dr. Carlisle is the Giant Breed Queen. The vets and staff problem solve and treat patients effectively and conveniently. They provide treatment plans based on what you can afford. Top notch care. Top notch clinic. I got time I'm in Quarantine read; Listen,I've had HORRID experiences with vets. My last Great Dane had some kind of skin disease I paid thousands to diagnose and never got an answer...it caused Mast cell tumors that were mis diagnosed as Lipoma's I had to throw a fit about to get biopsies. She then got bone cancer 6 months later at 4 years old and suffered immensely because of improper diagnosis & refusal to prescribe pain meds of that condition as well. I met DR. CARLISLE at Happy Tails in Vacaville after my last dane Scarlett passed away. I got a new Great Dane pup in March of 2019. Harlow :) and Dr. Carlisle was her first vet visit. I was astounded at her loving, caring, knowledgeable service! She educated me on proper nutrition for my specific breed of dog (she has a degree in K9 nutrition) she explained how calcium and phosphorus ratios affect a Giant Breeds bone growth and told me that a lot of suppliers don't even list it on the package. I had been giving Scarlett Call of The Wild which has a SUPER high calcium/phosphorus ratio....which causes bones to grow to quickly and can possibly contribute to bone cancer in Danes. (She didn't say it caused it she said there have been studies done that suggest it, I myself looked them up and she's right! I had no idea!!) I live in Fairfield! I went back 3 more times after she left to Davis and started to experience the flippant behavior I'd seen with Scarlett. So, I asked where Dr. Carlisle went and made an appointment at South Davis when Harlow continued to get reoccurring UTI's (4) and the other clinic refused to prescribe antibiotics without me bringing her in to get her weight. Even though she'd been there 2 weeks prior & I was leaving in 2 hours for Mexico. Then at a later date they told me she needed laser therapy or surgery for a tail tip injury ($1800) & there were no other options. South Davis prescribed plenty of antibiotics and continued to follow up on Harlow's condition. She hasn't had a UTI since. Dr. Carlisle also treated her tail tip injury in the office. Gave me PLENTY of supplies to treat it at home at a reasonable cost and wrote me an RX for GENERIC not expensive name brand meds I could get filled at any pharmacy for $5-$10. She was VERY patient with Harlow even though she's a SPAZ! And spent over an hour with me and 2 other vets techs taping up and treating her mangled tail. It healed right up! No surgery necessary! Bc I live in Fairfield this clinic has made it very easy for me to get refills at my local pharmacy and has no problem ensuring I am never inconvenienced. I got frustrated with the tail thing after Harlow are-inured it and I literally tried to make an appt to cut it off (don't judge me lol) Dr. Carlisle talked me out of the expensive surgery, though it was an opportunity for them to make $ and my other vet would have happily taken a machete to it, explaining that it was not in Harlow's best interest. I took her back and another vet took the same care Carlisle did and her tail is healed once again! I LOVE this vet and now send my Boyfriend there with his cats and my mom there with her ankle biter chihuahua "Spike". I will continue to trust the vets here and the excellent tech staff...most of which have extensive college educations relating to Animal science. It's worth the drive! Their website is also up to date with prices and procedures!

Staff are friendly and the doctors will give nervous dogs cheese on lick mats to help distract them during exams! I feel my concerns at this vet are taken seriously as opposed to having their vets. And the staff members will actually get down on the ground with my dogs which makes the world of difference to me.

I've been bringing my dog to west and south Davis since I rescued him 3 years ago. They have always been helpful and kind. As a graduate student I don't make much money and their prices are fair. They explain everything to me and are patient. My dog just had surgery there yesterday for a growth and they took great care through out the process. Giving me all my options and calling to check with me during the surgery day. I highly recommend!

After moving out of Sacramento I was in search of a new vet for my fur babies. South Davis vet is the third vet office I've been to in the area. I've been taking my cats there for almost 2 years now and have been nothing but completely satisfied! One kitty has complicated medical conditions, and the doctors here have been wonderful with accurately diagnosing and treating him. The staff is always courteous and thorough with answering my questions. And the care by the doctors is excellent! The vets here go above and beyond to explain things and give you detailed information and great recommendations for the best care of my babies. We consider ourselves lucky to have found this place and don't mind the long drive to get here...always well worth the trip.

I just want to say thank you all for helping my cat Oscar. Every person at this location has been nothing but helpful and extremely caring. It doesn't matter who I deal with it's always the same result and that deserves praise. I wanted to give them a big shout out that they have been very helpful with helping my cat Oscar. Oscar is extremely overweight and I'm doing my best to get him down. The staff have been extremely helpful educating me on how to get him down to a healthy weight. Poor guy even had a tapeworm and they helped me get rid of it. The prices for visits are very affordable which is amazing considering the quality! With their help I'm hoping to get Oscar to a healthy weight. Thanks again :)

My sweet and speechless fur baby. We will be lost without her.

I have not had much experience with this clinic but what I have had has been very, very, very good. The staff is awesome! Friendly, helpful and in good humor even during these crazy covid times. The staff is super important because that is who we the clients and patients talk to most of the time. Perla, Karly and cute other girl that I spoke with, I appreciate you! Dr. Schawel has been super pro, super helpful, super clear, and super dooper in general. I appreciate you too! My friend and colleague recommended them to me and I am grateful to her. Unfortunately my pet will not survive her ailment. Without getting into the details of her illness, I want to say how very kind, sensitive and supportive Dr Schawel and team have been. I can honestly say that I feel that they care and are trying their hardest to do right by our speechless fur babies. I feel safe with them helping me see my sweet girl to the end of her life. I dont want them to get too busy for me so I will stop gushing now.

Back home with new products to make my girl less itchy & a fun new toy!

We are bringing our Puppy in for a Follow up for 3 months ago, our puppy had heart surgery, so we have been here a few times now, coming from Stockton. Worth the drive for a pet that you would call a family member. The campus grounds are super clean, lots of wildlife, birds, squirrels, etc. Not sure if they take any animal in, or if you have to have a referral, like we did from our local vet. And they were alot cheaper then the vet and had more openings.

I brought my dog here for emergency surgery after a serious injury to his leg. My local vet…read morereferred us there and had called ahead, so they were expecting us and had 2+ hours notice we were coming. (6PM arrival) Fast forward another 4+ hours to 10:30 PM. We finally get to talk to a resident, Dr. Olivia Taubenfeld, who tells me she doesn't think it's a degloving injury - without even examining him yet. I tell her I don't what that is, but describe seeing exposed tendons, ligaments, and possibly bone (which is also what I described when admitting him hours before.) Another 2+ hours go by and they finally examine him. (1AM) Dr. Taubenfeld's report? Degloving injury. Had anyone bothered to look under the temporary bandage put on by the first local vet, or even listened to my description of his wound, they would have seen and understood the severity of the injury. Now they're recommending amputation and treatment options have changed drastically because they neglected seeing him for so long. After getting a second opinion, I decide to pull him out of this hospital so he can get proper care. I'm told they'll do a wound cleaning first thing in the morning. I communicate persistently all day, making sure they're aware of my intention to transfer him that afternoon. I go to pick him up at 4 PM - they haven't cleaned his wound yet. I wait hours, desperate to get him out of there and to a vet who has the capacity to give him proper care and attention. At one point (6 PM) I can hear him crying and whining from behind one of their exam room doors. Apparently, they finally got around to cleaning his wound, only without proper sedation and pain management. Torture. Soon after, they bring him out of that room to me. While I'm carrying him to leave, as soon as we get outside, he starts peeing in my arms. (Sweet boy waited until he was outside.) I place him down, and he stands there peeing for I swear at least one 1 minute. His bladder had to be completely full. Had they even let him relieve himself the 24 hours he was there?! I will never bring another animal here.

If you want expert pet care and absolutely abysmal lack of awareness, look no further…read more The care is first rate, though pricey, but not any pricier than any other vet. Where I found them horrible is in their attitude. When my 18 year-old cat was dying I wanted him euthanized. I couldn't tell if he were suffering. At first they wanted to schedule me for two days later (WTF?). Then when they told me the price, I told them I could pay more than half, but I'd have to pay the balance *four* days later. The phone receptionist went into "All fees must be paid at the time of service" robot mode. She suggested I start calling around to see if someone else could help me. I don't know if it was the same woman, but one time before the lady answering the phone was kind of snippy. Some people shouldn't be allowed to be on the phone with human beings. My cat? A few hours later he died *writhing* in my arms. I will never, ever, ever forgive them for that. They made a really bad day into the most horrible day in my life--all because they wouldn't wait a couple of days for 60 bucks. I might point out that I had paid them more than $800 over the previous year and a half with no trouble, but suddenly they were treating me like a panhandler out of the gutter. They are good at cat medicine, but absolutely rubbish at dealing with people.. These guys completely blew it. Keep looking.

After our original vet made several unfavorable changes, we knew it was time to look elsewhere. Our groomer recommended this office, and although it was a bit out of the way, we trusted her advice. For years, my dog's seizures had been brushed off, leaving us with no real answers. Here, we were quickly referred to UC Davis Neurology and, to my surprise, almost immediately got an appointment (which is rare!). Within a month, we finally had REAL answers and a REAL plan. The care and compassion we experienced were unlike anything I've ever seen. My sweet girl was treated as if she were their own with... kindness, patience , and a genuine understanding. She had begun showing unusual neurological symptoms after her seizures, which our previous vet dismissed. But here, the vet took her time to really listen and evaluate. When our appointment ran over, she personally went to the waiting room to let the next patient know my pup needed a little extra love and care. The compassion, dedication, and humanity shown here are unmatched. This review is long overdue, but so well deserved.

I thought I would give them another shot and call for a ballpark estimate on a service, but this is the only vet that wouldn't provide a broad range unless I took my cat in and paid the $90 exam fee. Every other vet provided me a range despite my cat never being seen, but this place is just a joke. I wouldn't trust them to care for any of my babies after the first incident, so I'm not sure why I even considered giving them another chance. Plus, their services are too overpriced. We got quoted $1,000+ for a spay surgery, went to the SPCA instead and only paid $40 for the same exact procedure with follow ups at no cost for complications. If you want a good and honest vet that will provide excellent care, then save your time and money and go to Woodland Pet Hospital instead. Never coming back here ever again.
