Cant say enough good words for this clinic and staff, even if the techs are students, they love there job and have a passion for it and it shows when they come to greet you and call you back to a room. Parking is free but just have to register your car license plate with there parking service / tablet in side. the staff and the Drs are Amazing, and they just really love this field of work. We are bringing our Puppy in for a Follow up for 3 months ago, our puppy had heart surgery, so we have been here a few times now, coming from Stockton. Worth the drive for a pet that you would call a family member. The campus grounds are super clean, lots of wildlife, birds, squirrels, etc. Not sure if they take any animal in, or if you have to have a referral, like we did from our local vet. And they were alot cheaper then the vet and had more openings. read more

I brought my dog here for emergency surgery after a serious injury to his leg. My local vet referred us there and had called ahead, so they were expecting us and had 2+ hours notice we were coming. (6PM arrival) Fast forward another 4+ hours to 10:30 PM. We finally get to talk to a resident, Dr. Olivia Taubenfeld, who tells me she doesn't think it's a degloving injury - without even examining him yet. I tell her I don't what that is, but describe seeing exposed tendons, ligaments, and possibly bone (which is also what I described when admitting him hours before.) Another 2+ hours go by and they finally examine him. (1AM) Dr. Taubenfeld's report? Degloving injury. Had anyone bothered to look under the temporary bandage put on by the first local vet, or even listened to my description of his wound, they would have seen and understood the severity of the injury. Now they're recommending amputation and treatment options have changed drastically because they neglected seeing him for so long. After getting a second opinion, I decide to pull him out of this hospital so he can get proper care. I'm told they'll do a wound cleaning first thing in the morning. I communicate persistently all day, making sure they're aware of my intention to transfer him that afternoon. I go to pick him up at 4 PM - they haven't cleaned his wound yet. I wait hours, desperate to get him out of there and to a vet who has the capacity to give him proper care and attention. At one point (6 PM) I can hear him crying and whining from behind one of their exam room doors. Apparently, they finally got around to cleaning his wound, only without proper sedation and pain management. Torture. Soon after, they bring him out of that room to me. While I'm carrying him to leave, as soon as we get outside, he starts peeing in my arms. (Sweet boy waited until he was outside.) I place him down, and he stands there peeing for I swear at least one 1 minute. His bladder had to be completely full. Had they even let him relieve himself the 24 hours he was there?! I will never bring another animal here. read more

Dr. Lenske is an amazing pet cardiologist. There are maybe 3 throughout the Bay Area and UC Davis is the only place you can get one overnight. Even our regular cardiologist wouldn't have been able to see us until two days later, which wasn't an option. My dog decided she wanted to try dying (3rd degree heart block) days before her 13th birthday. She was having syncope episodes so we took her to the pet ER/ICU at Omega. They stabilized her enough for us to drive 2 hrs to Davis. Her heart rate dropped as low as 20 there so they had to put pacer pads (reason why she's so patchy) and a temporary pacemaker for her to make it overnight. The next day she got her pacemaker placed. By the following day we were able to take her home. The photo of her smiling is now 2 weeks after the incident with her stitches removed and the hardest thing now is just keeping her calm (with sedatives) because she has so much energy. As a RN myself, I had a lot of detailed medical questions and concerns and I totally appreciated how often Dr. Lenske updated us and how much time she spent explaining things even down to the discharge process. Cannot have asked for a better doctor for our senior dog. read more

UC Davis small animal hospital saved our dog's life. She had a large tumor on her liver. Our local vet felt that this would be the best place for her to have surgery. ICU and blood bank readily available. We stayed at the dog hotel a mile away. The surgeon was kind and knowledgeable. Explained risks. We got updates when they said they would call. Financial estimate was accurate. The staff was kind. I have been a RN for 40yrs. 20 yrs in outpatient surgery. I was super impressed. The vibe in the clinic was kind and professional. Follow up questions were answered promptly. Our dog did really well and hopefully we have several more years without most beloved family member. read more

Worst veterinary experience I've ever had. We trusted UC Davis with our cat and left feeling shocked, frustrated, and thousands of dollars lighter. We were presented with the possibility of a brain tumor, which caused an incredible amount of stress and fear for our family. After all the testing, appointments, and expense, we later learned the problem appeared to be an ear infection. The emotional roller coaster they put us through was unacceptable. We spent countless hours worrying that our cat had a life-threatening neurological condition, only to question whether the diagnosis process was handled properly in the first place. The bills kept coming, but clear answers did not. At every step, it felt like we were paying more and learning less. For a facility with such a high reputation, I expected expertise, accuracy, and communication. Instead, I walked away feeling misled, overcharged, and deeply disappointed. If your pet receives a serious diagnosis here, get a second opinion before making major decisions. I wish we had done that much sooner. Based on our experience, I would never bring my pet back and would not recommend this facility to friends or family. read more

Brought my dog here to get her eyes checked due to her cataracts getting worse. We got surgery done, no complications. Everyone was great, answered all our questions and was very quick to respond to online messaging. My dog is still getting her follow up check ups and they are always on top of it. read more

Unfortunately, my dog was having a bad allergic reaction to something several weeks ago. Benadryl was only providing temporary relief, so we called their emergency department and was recommended to bring her in for further evaluation. All of the staff we interacted with (from the front office to the resident physicians) were very friendly and caring. There was a short wait before a resident took my dog's history and brought her to the back where they could monitor her. Since there was an urgent case ahead of us, I understood that it would be a long wait. After close to two hours, my dog's condition improved dramatically, so the resident physician gave me the option to take her home or wait until the other dog was out of surgery to be seen. Since my dog was doing significantly better, I agreed to just take her home. They educated me on what to look out for and when to bring her back. And, thankfully, since my dog wasn't seen by an attending physician, they gave me a refund. Overall, I'm satisfied with the service we received at UC Davis' Veterinary Emergency Department. I was very worried for my dog, but they reassured me that everything would turn out okay since she was no longer in significant distress. My dog is doing way better now, so I'm very thankful for UC Davis' Veterinary Hospital's Emergency Department. read more

I owe UC Davis Vet, the doctors, and the neurosurgeon everything! Specifically, Dr Matte, Dr Harju, and Dr Prodger. My dog started wobbling Friday morning at 9am and by the time it was 9pm, my dog no longer had any feeling in his back two legs. I spent 9 hours at Sage in Campbell (ER vet) just to be sent home and telling me to come back on Monday (3 days later) to see if I could get seen by the Neurologist on Monday. I ended up going home and with my dog not being able to stand at all, I knew this was urgent and ended up going back to the ER within 30 minutes. UCD was recommended since they were only one of two 24/7 vet hospitals that had a neurosurgeon available. Note that you do need a referral to be seen! Thankfully they stated that my dog's situation was extremely urgent and he would be categorized as a P1 patient. They had the MRI completed a few hours later and then carted him to surgery! They constantly called with updates and were the most caring team of doctors I've ever met. Their pricing is also ridiculously fair. Bay Area hospitals were quoting me $20k and everything came out to slightly under $9k for us at UCD. Though we did take our dog home less than 48 hours post op. It's so terrifying thinking about what could've happened if UCD didn't take my dog in with such urgency since they do get busy. I'm worried about if this happens again in the future, but for now, thank you UCD team from the bottom of my heart. read more

UC Davis has now misdiagnosed TWO of my horses and then added disputed charges to my account after I had already paid my bill in full. In spring 2025 I brought a mare to UC Davis with genetically confirmed Equine Recurrent Uveitis (ERU). She was bred by Kansas State University during research into hereditary uveitis. She also had cataracts in both eyes, and eventual blindness was considered inevitable. Because ERU is painful, incurable, and progressive, I made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize her before her quality of life declined further. When I arrived, I was treated as though I was euthanizing a healthy horse "for no reason." Davis refused euthanasia because she was not actively flaring at that exact moment and instead pushed for a specialist ophthalmology exam. I agreed. The ophthalmologist told me she had cataracts but "no signs" of uveitis. I was thrilled and took her home believing maybe I had been wrong. Months later, after a real workout, she developed eye inflammation and discharge the next day -- her first obvious uveitis flare. Another flare followed later. Davis dismissed the genetic history and clinical context, and they were wrong. Now I am even more attached to a horse whose future is still tragically limited. Later in 2025 I brought in a 2-year-old filly with colic-like symptoms and mild neurological symptoms. I repeatedly explained before arrival that I did NOT believe this was true colic and suspected a nutritional or vitamin deficiency due to a prior period of improper nutrition. Despite explaining this multiple times, everyone approached the case as colic. Unsurprisingly, the workup showed it was NOT colic. I specifically requested vitamin and mineral testing multiple times and was told results would be back Monday. Monday arrived and the tests apparently had either not been ordered correctly or were delayed until I pushed again for them. I was then told a neurologist would see her Tuesday, which became Wednesday instead. During this time the hospital became busy with emergencies and my filly was repeatedly deprioritized while my bill continued increasing. The neurologist diagnosed my filly with Wobblers disease -- a severe and often fatal condition that is extremely rare in fillies. I was devastated. They also sent home ulcer medications I specifically stated I did not want because she had already been treated for ulcers previously and scoping did not support that diagnosis. I paid my bill in full, approximately $2,400. I STILL had not received the vitamin and mineral test results. My discharge paperwork and bloodwork did not arrive for another week. When the results finally came in, she was severely Vitamin E deficient -- exactly what I had suspected from the beginning. After one to two weeks of liquid Vitamin E supplementation, her neurological symptoms resolved and she became a strong, healthy 2-year-old. Another major misdiagnosis. Then, 10 days AFTER discharge and AFTER I had already paid in full, Davis added another approximately $600 to my account and began sending warning letters threatening to deny future services. I disputed the charges immediately beginning in January. Customer care did not meaningfully respond until May and only offered to remove one additional night of hospitalization charges. My experience with UC Davis was that specialists became narrowly focused on their own specialty while ignoring the broader clinical picture and owner-provided history. The result in both cases was stress, emotional devastation, unnecessary expense, and serious misdiagnoses. read more

I recently made the two-hour drive from Napa to have my small dog examined at this clinic, having called ahead to confirm I could be present during the exam. However, upon arrival, I was unexpectedly asked to sign a bunch of paperwork before even seeing a student, including permission to perform procedures. You can imagine my surprise when I called ahead and asked if I could be in the exam. I found it odd that I was required to sign everything first, despite having requested to be consulted beforehand. Noting that there was actually nothing wrong with my dog than a major dental issue, an earache And being a little lethargic probably secondary to his dental issue. So communicating with a vet or student vet in an exam room was most appropriate for my case anyway. When I asked if I could go in with my dog, as I had previously requested during our phone call, the staff member not only was shaking and struggling to make eye contact, but she was less-than-helpful attitude at the front desk. She said no, she didn't even know what was wrong with the dog? A key component in solving any medical question is to be curious. It was such a a bad attempted check in experience, in fact, the staff in the parking lot were more courteous and friendly when I was trying to find the entrance than the front desk team. Is it a work study program for people who can't qualify to work anywhere else? This experience raises concerns about the clinic's communication and customer service standards. It may be worth reviewing staff training to ensure personnel are personable, able to make eye contact, and familiar with client histories to make future visits more reassuring. Additionally, if the clinic cannot properly communicate messages from their techs, to vets to office staff, how is it possible to not be concerned about the type of care that my little dog would get? Right now, the overall experience feels disorganized and somewhat dismissive, which could impact the clinic's reputation and Yelp ratings. For a facility that deals with pets and worried owners, more attentive and empathetic customer service should be a priority. read more

Calling around for pet biopsy quotes (recommended by my dog's primary vet). Asked for standard suction biopsy starting price--fully aware I'd need an in-person assessment first, just checking if it's worth the trip. The rep smugly repeated "You'd have to bring him in for the doctor to decide whether he needs one"--cutting me off every time. Pettily withheld transparency around starting biopsy costs, while any other vet has no issue providing a range. Also- "Decide"? I understand a UC Davis vet would have to order it--but that wording feels so dismissive. Call me an entitled customer (that will pay, mind you), but if my dog has a sizeable lump, I feel like that warrants me requesting a biopsy as long as I go through your exam process. UC Davis vet team did a GREAT JOB operating and treating Lily's (the bunny) left eye. Given the pictures attached pre- and post-behavior overall, she seems much more lively as a 10.5 year old bunny and seems more likely to be happy and living longer as a result! I would definitely work on getting scheduling and flexibility for delayed traffic improved especially given the 2+ hour drive each way from SF Bay Area. Still, given Lily's happiness and appeared satisfaction I highly recommend them for all rabbits!! read more

My dog had TPLO and a number of complications. We got him into PT at another facility in Penryn that we had great progress at, but unfortunately had to find a new facility when we moved out this way. Initially my experience with UC Davis Veterinary Rehab was fine, the assessment took a while because it's a teaching facility but they were all pleasant and the doctor that came in at the end to review the plan the students put together was as well. I did think it was weird that they didn't want owners in the evaluation or PT sessions as I'd always been a part of Goose's PT at the other facility. Goose had his first PT session and seemed ok coming out of it, but then the following week at his chiropractor appointment he was fearful of being touched, kept bucking and getting wide eyed at any attempts to even touch him at the appointment. This was with his established chiropractor, he's never been fearful on any of his many many treatments and has actually always been excited for all of his appointments. I contacted UC Davis and asked what happened at his PT appointment since this was a big change for him, and asked that I be able to sit in on his next session. I was informed it was their policy to not allow owners in, and if I just wanted to cancel all of his upcoming appointments that was fine. I stressed that Goose needs the PT and I'd like him to continue, but I want to sit in to make sure how he's being handled is appropriate because he never has been fearful and shouldn't be. A supervisor was contacted supposedly and I received a call back confirming that they would not be allowing me to attend his session and I could cancel his upcoming ones. While I can't speak directly to what happened during that session, I know my dog and I know the changes did not come out of no where. Fear does not come out of no where. I would strongly caution anyone from taking their dog here. read more

I cannot express enough gratitude to the incredible team at UC Davis Veterinary Hospital for the care they provided to my French bulldog, Violet. Dr. Joyce Jin and Dr. Marguerite Knipe led a phenomenal team who worked tirelessly to give Violet the best chance possible. Their dedication, expertise, and compassion in managing her herniated disc and myelomalacia were truly beyond compare. Although Violet tragically passed away on September 28th, I am at peace knowing that UC Davis did everything they could. Throughout Violet's time there, I was always informed, supported, and treated with such kindness. I especially want to thank Dr. Joyce Jin, who not only provided expert medical care but also guided us through this incredibly difficult journey. Her brilliant mind and warm heart were evident in every step she took to help Violet. Dr. Jin's kindness and attentiveness, both to Violet and to us, will never be forgotten! I can't even imagine how hard it is to work in a veterinary hospital, dealing with the emotions and challenges of both animals and their families. Yet, their work means so much. The energy and compassion they share with each patient is a wonderful gift to the world. Even after receiving the most devastating news, the hospital's empathy never wavered. While losing Violet has been one of the hardest experiences of my life, I am forever grateful for the care she received. The entire team at UC Davis Veterinary Hospital gave their best to Violet's care, and I cannot thank them enough for that. I will always remember their efforts. If I could make it a 0 or negative, I would!! the 'doctor' "strongly" at UC Davis recommended euthanasia for what turned out to be a simple infection!!! I have an 11 year old cat (Yoda) that had not been eating and was lethargic. Having heard such positive things about UC Davis, I took her there (it was a Sunday). There was only 1 other person in the waiting area when I arrived. First thing, I had to pay $310, up front, just to have her seen. They would not allow me to go with her for 'triage' because it was "easier for the doctors" to look at her somewhere other than an exam room, which would allow me to be with her (I am scared, the cat is scared...but let's make it 'easier' for the doctors). After a period of time I was able to speak with the doctor (Caleb Kemnitz), my cat was elsewhere. He explained that her gums were white, and she was somewhat dehydrated. He wanted to run some bloodwork, which of course I agreed to. He said that it would be an hour or 2 before the results were back and suggested grabbing a bite or shopping. Being that I lived almost 50 miles away, I went into downtown, gone close to 2 hours. When I returned there was no one in the waiting area. Nobody behind the reception desk said a word. After about 1/2 hour I asked if there was any word. The woman said, "have they called you?", no, they had not, "they will call you when they're done". No checking on the status, just the snappy little remark. Finally Dr. Kemnitz came out and took me into an exam room to discuss the results (I still have not seen my cat). He said that most of her labs were fine however her red blood cell count was at 9 (normal is 35-50), which is severely anemic and that she was not producing new cells. Among a few other possibilities for the severely low count, he said it could be FIV (feline Aids) or FeLV (feline leukemia), yet he did not test for either. He said that in order to test any further she would need a blood transfusion just to get her in a place to be able to test. She would need to be in the hospital for 2-7 days for the testing. There was no way I could afford this, he told me that he believed that even if I was a trillionaire the results would be the same. He "strongly" recommended euthanasia, even after telling me she was not in pain or suffering! He then left the room only saying that was going to go finish his notes. After sitting in the room for another 1/2 hour, I finally went to the desk and asked if he was coming back. The answer, "no, come pay the remainder of your bill and we will get your cat" (they were holding her hostage???)! I said I had a few more questions for the doctor and would like to speak with him again. Finally some other person I had never seen brought her out. When I asked him my questions, he said "I don't know", he didn't offer to get the doctor or find out. I was so angry I stormed out. The following day (Monday) I called to get the medical records to give to my regular vet. I was told it takes 2-3 days for them to be completed! I called the following day (Tuesday) to ask again, they finally sent them to me. I forwarded the records to my vet. After my vet reviewed the results, she had a different opinion about the lab work results. She said that Yoda was producing the blood cells and thought it may just be an infection. She put Yoda on Doxycycline and Prednisolone and told me to come in the next day (Wednesday). I was there as soon as they opened. She examined Yoda and said other than the white gums and lethargy, she seemed ok. To be sure she ran the FIV and FeLV tests to rule them out (both were negative). She said to come back on Saturday to run her blood to see if there was any improvement on the meds. I took Yoda in Saturday morning. The Vet Tech came out and sat down and said that she had read Yoda's records from UC Davis and could not believe what she was reading, what in the world was this 'doctor' thinking!?!?! She took Yoda back, drew her blood then brought her back to me. About 15 mins later my vet came out and said her count was 40, normal!!! Yoda is fine, she is eating and her normal happy self. I don't know if Dr. Caleb Kemnitz is incompetent, lazy or just doesn't care (or maybe all 3), but 6 days earlier he was "strongly" recommending to euthanize my Yoda when all she had was a treatable infection!!! Absolute malpractice!! I cannot help but wonder how many other beloved pets were murdered unnecessarily because of this man!!! I am filing a complaint with the head of the UC Davis Veterinary program as well as filing a complaint and asking for an investigation with the Veterinary Medical Board! read more

A money grab. Went to a vet in Sacramento who diagnosed my dog with probable stomach cancer after ultrasound, bloodwork and xrays. They told us without exploratory surgery which they said they don't recommend and wont do. They said to put her down. Well, I wanted a few other opinions and next stop was Davis. The doctor took one look at the report and said "I trust the doctor who diagnosed her, I know of her personally" nothing else offered and $350 for that. Took her to a third place closer to home and GUESS WHAT?? She had an infection and needed antibiotics which was causing the issues and whatever they saw (we monitored) never grew or changed. Aaaand my little girl lived another year and a half dying of something completely unrelated. Do better Davis. People come for a second opinion for a work up and not you taking another's word. She would have died of the infection if we didn't push to get to the third vet and antibiotics. read more

About two months ago, my cat Baby suddenly began having difficulty swallowing food. After a visit to a local emergency hospital, we discovered that her esophagus had narrowed to just 2mm -- no wonder she couldn't eat. Unfortunately, there was nothing they could do at the ER, and they immediately referred us to UC Davis Veterinary Hospital for a balloon dilation procedure. When we first called for an initial consultation, the earliest available appointment was over a month out -- and we knew Baby wouldn't be able to wait that long. Thankfully, the UC Davis team understood the urgency of her condition and secured a canceled slot for us, allowing Baby to be seen within a week. During the consultation, Dr. Hirsch, who was exceptionally kind, caring, and communicative -- even reaching out to us over the weekend -- worked quickly to schedule Baby's first procedure. They promptly arranged a series of three balloon dilation procedures over the following three weeks. The level of care, compassion, and expertise at UC Davis is truly extraordinary. They genuinely care about your pets and will do everything possible to help them. A very special thanks to Dr. Hulsebosch -- an outstanding doctor who is caring, attentive, easy to talk to, and truly listens -- as well as his incredible team and the entire staff at UC Davis. Our dog was very sick and not responding to treatment by our local vet. They recommended we take her to the local ER Vet/Speciality hospital in Marin or UC Davis. It was Sunday of Thanksgiving week. We called both places. The local ER didn't have an internist, which is what our vet said we needed. UCD did. That's where we went. We were seen immediately and our girl was admitted quickly. It wasn't for over 24 hours until she had an ultrasound. She would have had one at our vet sooner. We never heard from or spoke to a vet at UCD. We had to call many times before a clerk gave us an update. Wednesday morning I got a call to get her later in the day. My husband was having minor surgery and I kept trying to explain that as soon as he was out, I'd pick him up and could travel up to Davis. But, it might be later afternoon. The person didn't seem to understand or care about my situation. We got to UCD hospital and went to check our dog out. We waited an hour and nothing. Finally, we asked again. The person who I checked out with had not called back to alert the vet. Eventually, we got our dog. She looked better. We got her meds & discharge instructions. When I told the student that I never spoke to a doctor, she immediately got the internist to meet with us. The internist explained everything and answered all of our questions. We had a lot. We felt much better after our conversation with her. This is our third sick dog we've had at UCD. It seems that this visit was the least awe-inspiring. The elevators didn't work, the restroom was out of order. The staff wasn't on top of things. The patient portal that used to be updated in almost real time wasn't maintained. In stead of the 2-4 daily calls from a vet or vet student, I received none. I had to pester them and then an admin called once. But, my dog's care seems (from what I can tell) to have been good). Maybe it's the time of year or season that we just caught the school at a lackluster time. read more

Tremendously long wait times upwards of 3-4 hours for the small animal emergency vet. I would not recommend bringing our pet here. The front desk staff is rude and unhelpful. They bring your pet back and make them wait in a kennel for the entire 3-4 hour wait. It is "our policy" the receptionist says. That is inhumane to animals that are already suffering. I ended up leaving and taking my dog to another local emergency vet where she was seen in under 30 minutes. read more

About a month after my fur baby passed away I received a card and her paw prints in the mail unexpectedly. I've never received anything from a veterinary clinic after losing a pet so it was so very thoughtful of them. It's a nice touch to let clients know that our pets were well taken care of with UC Davis vet oncology department. I've only ever seen the paw prints as an option to buy so receiving this unexpectedly at my house was very warming. The folks at UC Davis went above and beyond what we have ever experienced!! 10 stars!! We had a dog come in through our rescue who needed a TECA (double ear ablation surgery) this is a very major surgery, and requires specialists. We got into Davis, we met with the wonderful Doctor Kyla Walter (DMV) and her staff. The thoroughness, care, compassion and attention to detail they had when taking on Cletus's case was just outstanding. He had other stuff come up (skin issues, infection due to bacteria that had been growing in his ear prior to surgery) they handled it so incredibly well. We got detailed updates twice a day, and he was so well taken care of. We have gone so numerous specialists in the Bay Area, and UC Davis not only provided stellar care, but they were honestly more affordable than any other place we got quoted. I cannot recommend them enough!! This has been a long journey for this dog and we couldn't have had a better group of experts to help him with this, and been more joyful to work with. They were awful, charged a fortune and tried to send my dog home the as she was when she came. Wanted me to give her a sedative and she would have just died at home. Said it was normal for a dog to bleed from there nose. Gave her a medicine that effected her kidneys and she had to stay a week. I had to pay for there mistake. This is a learning vet hospital. Go to one that already knows what there doing. They let students put an IV in my lil dog and they blew her vain. So much extra pain and she was already ill. UC Davis provided the best care for my Cockatiel. The doctor and students are superb and they are the only vet I will ever go to again. They care and want to help and not in the business of draining your pockets. Most vets nowadays do not offer the expertise they used to. One of the best parts about living in the Sacramento area was being able to have some of the most top-notch vets in the country nearby to support my family and our dog's health. Overall, we had a best-in-class experience here, though over time, we were not necessarily able to get full answers about our dog's condition. Some health issues will forever be unanswered. (True for pets and humans sometimes!) We worked extensively with a neurology resident to address our dog's seizures. We had already worked with two neurologists in another state, and when we arrived at UC Davis, he was on 5 or 6 medications. With Davis's guidance, we were able to get him down to 2 anti-seizure medications, drastically improving our dog's life - and ours. Our dog was able to get an EKG. (Davis is one of the only places in the U.S. who can do this.) While the first one was inconclusive, we did get illuminating results from a second EKG confirming the unusual-looking seizures. In fact, our dog apparently had become a bit of a legend in the practice and the topic of lots of conversations. However, we never got farther in terms of a diagnosis or other possibilities for treatment. With the removal of so many medications, we also came to understand that our dog had some underlying anxiety and behavior issues. We worked with Dr. Stelow for one in-depth session and had access to some other members of her practice. Frankly, we didn't fully dive into this aspect of our dog's health given the original neurological purpose, and sometimes it felt hard to coordinate the two to plan next steps, but the doctors were certainly thorough and generally good over email. Despite some of these short comings, we appreciate the care and would 100% say that our dog's and our lives are better because of the care we got here. Yes, these tests and appointments were all very expensive. Of all the places we've brought our dog, though, UC Davis was one of the best at getting information back to our insurance company in a timely manner. read more

Wish I could give them 0 or negative stars. It took forever to get an appointment, I called twice a day every day because they said to. There's no waiting list or anything like that... but when there was a cancellation someone ended up calling me to set up the appointment - it would have been nice if they just offered to do that from the start rather than making me call back every single day. When I finally got the appointment, the doctor (not the student) was taking notes on a paper towel.. later when we were exchanging emails with him we had to repeat ourselves multiple times - he didn't seem to listen to anything we said. We went in because our primary vet told us they thought our cat had a middle ear infection. UC Davis did some tests and decided she didn't have one and recommended flea medication, steroids, and a diet trial. They have a partnership with Royal Canin where they get free product and then can sell it to you at a discounted rate so they're going to strongly recommend that - They also recommended food that had ingredients I know my cat is allergic to. So they recommended seeing the nutritionist. Pricing was not transparent - they did tests and didn't explain that these would cost extra. Later, after bringing my cat home and giving her the prescribed steroids she was still shaking her head and I felt she did have the middle ear infection. I asked for a quote for the visit and when I had questions about it, whoever sent the quote just repeated whatever it already said without clarifying anything. When I asked them about pricing for the nutritionist they were also very unclear and did not answer my questions. We eventually found another vet who confirmed my cat does have a middle ear infection in one visit. You're better off finding somewhere else. Don't waste your time or your money. read more

5 stars (more like 10) for Dr. Max Randolph in Internal Medicine! 3.5 stars for everything else. Read on for more. One of my dogs developed severe pancreatitis back in March. Unsure of what it was, we first brought her to Atlantic St, where she stayed for several days. After a week at home with no improvement and things seemingly getting worse, I took her to her primary vet and was told her body was shutting down. The vet recommended we euthanize her or take her to UC Davis as a last ditch effort; we took her to UCD straight from there. At UCD, her pancreatitis was identified as "necrotizing" where it's so severe that parts of the pancreas can start to die. She developed a biliary obstruction and hepatitis due to the pancreatitis, along with an immune-mediated form of anemia. She stayed at UCD for almost two weeks and we visited her almost every other day. She had to have a feeding tube placed, as she wasn't ready to eat on her own, but it was so instrumental to her recovery and ensuring she get the proper meds and nutrition. Dr. Randolph was extremely kind, informative, thorough, and compassionate throughout the whole process. I work in animal nutrition, so ask A LOT of questions, and never once felt rushed by him. About a month after leaving the hospital, Coco was well enough to have her feeding tube removed, and has been thriving ever since! She has more energy than I've seen from her in years. Dr. Randolph is a miracle worker! We love him and are so grateful to him for saving our girl Coco! He's truly gone above and beyond in helping us with her continued care and monitoring her progress. UC Davis Vet is extremely fortunate to have him on their team! Now for UCD Vet in general: All in all, my experiences with other staff were fine. Some had a much better bedside manner than others, but I felt all were respectful and considerate. Yes, it's expensive; it's a teaching hospital. We spent ~$30k out the door, but believe it to be the best money we've spent yet. If you can swing it, to see one of your family members so close to death, to make such a miraculous recovery, is truly a gift. They need to get more receptionists to answer phone calls! Nearly every time you call, you're waiting at least 10min, but usually more like 30-60min! For an institution taking in the big bucks, there's no excuse to not be properly staffed to field phone calls. There were a few billing errors overtime and we'd continue to receive bills in the mail for things that had already been paid. I was very underwhelmed with their nutritional service and recommendation of low quality, inflammatory ingredients (white rice, corn and soy oil). This isn't surprising unfortunately, as they are an allopathic institution and don't place much emphasis on high quality, minimally processed, biologically appropriate nutrition (which is truly foundational to health and wellness for all beings). If you have an emergency or complex case, I would bypass any other area hospitals and go straight to UCD. Thank you again, Dr. Randolph for bringing our girl Coco back to life read more

I took my shih tzu dog to UCDavis emergency clinic because my dog was bleeding from her behind and for almost 400.00 $ all they could tell me was to give my dog a bland diet and add some pumpkin. Needless to say my dogs behind was still bleeding. I then took my dog to a different vet clinic in Folsom and it took the vet all of about 20 minutes to figure out the problem. UCDavis said they had expressed her anal glands and didnt find a problem. The folsom vet also expressed her anal glands and showed me the tissues from both left and right sides and I am no vet but could tell the difference between both sides and the right side was bloody with puss in it. I was only charged 64.00$ to find out the problem. my dog needed a procedure to flush out her infected gland which I had done the next day and my fur baby is doing great, no more bleeding. So my complaint is that UCDavis should of caught the problem when they expressed her anal glands but instead they had me pay for blood work and wanted me to pay for xrays and other tests but I could not afford it and they were not necessary anyways. My dogs infection could of been a lot more serious had I not taken her to someone qualified to be a vet. If I could give them a negative score I most definately would. I had called to make a complaint and the supervisor told me there was no infection when they expressed her gland but my dog had been bleeding from her behind for about a week prior to my taking her to UCDavis and it was obviously infected when I took her in. I have recently look up the symptoms on google and it clearly states what the problem could be so I dont know why the vet at UCDavis couldnt figure it out after having my dog there for about 5 hours when the folsom vet figured it out in 20 minutes. read more

I have been calling for over a month to get my doberman a spay appointment. She has to go to a specialist because she has a blood clotting disorder. The biggest complaint I have is I hear a different answer everytime I call by some mega attitude snotty rude student? I'm not sure who they are but they are terrible. My dog needs help and I don't know how anyone even gets to bring their dog there. Today I was informed they're not taking any referrals at all. It threw me over the top because first time I called I was told to send the referral to an email address. The second time I called, I was told to send it to a different address. The third time I called I was told someone would call me back to set up an appointment within the two week window. Four weeks I call back and they tell me they're not accepting any outside referrals and the woman was such a !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so disappointed in the way I've been treated I was just trying to get my giant dog, capable of having 12 puppies with a disorder SPAYED and this incompetent, rude, snotty staff is incredibly ridiculous. This place has a good name because it USE to be good. They have some not so kind staffers. They have sour puss faces and are just there getting through the day. Not for the compassion and care of a pet owner in sadness or worry. They just give lip service when you call for help. A tech just says, well come in but after 8 being it's better because of the shift change. Its baffling. If someone is calling for help before 8am they shouldn't be persuaded to go in later. We went to UCD for these same issues just to have it again with no real answer. I would like to keep my pet and not the lateral. The waiting room is so saturated it's more stressful with all the various pets May they be overactive and etc. This place needs a revamp of caring front staff and tech.
