My local vet…read morereferred us there and had called ahead, so they were expecting us and had 2+ hours notice we were coming. (6PM arrival) Fast forward another 4+ hours to 10:30 PM. We finally get to talk to a resident, Dr. Olivia Taubenfeld, who tells me she doesn't think it's a degloving injury - without even examining him yet. I tell her I don't what that is, but describe seeing exposed tendons, ligaments, and possibly bone (which is also what I described when admitting him hours before.) Another 2+ hours go by and they finally examine him. (1AM) Dr. Taubenfeld's report? Degloving injury. Had anyone bothered to look under the temporary bandage put on by the first local vet, or even listened to my description of his wound, they would have seen and understood the severity of the injury. Now they're recommending amputation and treatment options have changed drastically because they neglected seeing him for so long. After getting a second opinion, I decide to pull him out of this hospital so he can get proper care. I'm told they'll do a wound cleaning first thing in the morning. I communicate persistently all day, making sure they're aware of my intention to transfer him that afternoon. I go to pick him up at 4 PM - they haven't cleaned his wound yet. I wait hours, desperate to get him out of there and to a vet who has the capacity to give him proper care and attention. At one point (6 PM) I can hear him crying and whining from behind one of their exam room doors. Apparently, they finally got around to cleaning his wound, only without proper sedation and pain management. Torture. Soon after, they bring him out of that room to me. While I'm carrying him to leave, as soon as we get outside, he starts peeing in my arms. (Sweet boy waited until he was outside.) I place him down, and he stands there peeing for I swear at least one 1 minute. His bladder had to be completely full. Had they even let him relieve himself the 24 hours he was there?! I will never bring another animal here.

When you have pets. Stuff happens. We have a great local Vet in Oakland, but when my sweet cattle…read moredog boy Dingo started projectile vomiting and had scary bloody diarrhea we needed urgent help. We called our regular vet, and with it being a Friday afternoon they had no available appointments. Totally understandable, we were referred to an emergency clinic in Berkeley. The traffic in that direction to berkley was terrible, and by this point my poor dog is shaking and pooping blood. My coworker from Pacifica, overheard my panic as I was on the phone at work with my husband who was with our sick dog frantically trying to find an emergency clinic, suggested VEG veterinary emergency group. She said she had heard great things and took her sick pup there, from Pacifica to San Ramon based on others glowing recommendations of them. I instructed my husband to rush to San Ramon, while I called veg to give them a heads up on my dog being rushed in. By this point, I'd called multiple other "emergency" pet clinics and was frustrated with the lack of appointments (and empathy). I called VEG fully expecting to get turned away and I was pleasantly surprised with how Wonderful, supportive and helpful the front desk gal was. She calmly heard me out, understood that I was at work my husband was in the car speeding towards them with a vomiting shaking, mess of a dog. She texted me an intake form to fill out. And told me not to worry and that they would be ready to help my husband and dog as soon as they came through the door. This place has pet emergencies dialed in. My husband said as soon as he came in, they greeted him and my dog dingo by name and took them in side and seen by a vet FAST. They quickly administered IV hydration, gave him anti nausea and anti diarrheal. They took blood for tests and X-rays ( or ultrasound I'm not sure) to check for blockages. My husband was blown away by the open lobby and the efficacy and compassion. Thankfully seems like our Boy will live to see another day, he's feeling much much better. And we now have a go to location for any pet emergencies. Don't hesitate on driving here from anywhere in the Bay Area for an animal emergency. They are worth the drive and the money. I will say it was not a cheap visit but given the circumstances the care and the efficiency was well worth every single penny. This place is great. Thank you so much VEG. The best in pet emergencies

The level of compassion and care that we received from her is unparalleled. She was so patient, kind, called with updates frequently, and genuinely cared about his well-being throughout his stay. She fought for him - fought to keep him alive. After she was finally able to get a specialty care hospital to take him and he was transferred, she called daily to check up on him even after he was discharged from VEG. The world needs more doctors like her especially during difficult times. Dr. Matsuo is a kind human, who gives me hope again that there are doctors out there who actually care about their patients vs. focusing on volume. VEG is so incredibly lucky and fortunate to have her and I highly recommend that if your pet ever has the unfortunate need to go to VEG, you ask for Dr. Matsuo. We thank her so much for being so patient, having tenacity in fighting for patients, and being just an amazing, wonderful, compassionate person. We thank you so much for saving Pinot.

The doctor even sat with her when we were finally seen so she wouldn't have to be moved. :) All the staff talked to her like a baby whenever they addressed her which made me happy too. This…read morepast experience is in no way a negative against the staff as far as their customer service, but more of an "educational" review. I sent this email to them on 1/3, and I haven't received a response yet. Even when this incident occurred, the staff was attentive and went above and beyond to try to resolve the situation. I'm posting this for education to anyone who has a cat. This is a copy of my email on 1/3: Good morning, I wanted to personally write instead of posting a review on Yelp, about our experience when we brought Maple in on Sunday, December 28th. Our family has a long history of pets that we have brought in over the years, and we have never had a negative experience in any way, in fact, I have always spoke highly of the entire staff there when recommending to friends and family. I want to start off by staying that our experience on 12/28 was not a negative one with regards to the staff, but I am writing this email to bring something to your attention in hopes of educating staff to prevent this from happening in the future (and yes, it's not a matter of "if" but a matter of "when" when cats are involved!). Maple has been very sick and multiple visits to her regular vet and your emergency, have happened the past month. We brought her to emergency on 12/28 in hopes of finding out what was wrong and finding a solution. Maple is a very nervous cat and doesn't like strangers, and she really did not like having anything shoved up her butt when she has been in a lot of discomfort due to the diarrhea. Maple was examined, then taken to the room for further testing. I wish I would have objected, but I trusted that staff would do their very best with regard to safety. Unfortunately, Maple escaped their hold and tried to find a place to hide, which was inside an open cabinet where there was an opening to the underside of the steel exam table. I'm sure I don't need to state how dangerous this is and could have been if the outcome was different. Cats are very unpredictable creatures, and after we were invited to go back to the room to try to coax her out, I was surprised at the lack of secure spaces for cats. I want to add that this ordeal ended up being just short of 9 hours at. We tried everything to get her out. This was an extremely stressful and upsetting time for my daughter and I and resulted in my being awake for 24 hours. My daughter ended up calling in sick for work since we left the vet around 6am. I was doing my best not to be upset at staff, but I feel like looking back, there is a bit of negligence on their part. My request is that staff is educated, more careful, and that there is some type of plan in place to mitigate any future occurrences. Maple was lucky. We were lucky that she didn't have a serious health condition and that she was healthy enough to be in that hole for that length of time. My ask is that you also find out from the manufacturer if there is a cover for the inside of that exam table, so that in the off-chance staff leaves that door open, that another cat will not have the same experience as Maple did. I look forward to your response.

I called ahead and they told me it would be about a two hour wait. We live 25 mins away with a yowling cat, was not a fun car ride. He fell off his cat tree and got his head and neck stuck that caused some concerning problems walking, head bobbing, and arm twitches. The place is BIG and long. Vast parking. Several exam rooms. Huge lobby seating area. Drink station for customers. But FREEZING cold when you are wearing shorts! The vet tech came out within 15 mins to get the initial info of what happened and some medical history. Now here is what I don't like. He took my cat without me and said that a vet would check him out and then come out with the options and charges. This is why i avoided taking my cat to the vet during the pandemic. I want to be present for all exams and procedures. I want to know you are actually doing the work and treating my cat right. 20-30 mins later Vet tech comes out and tells me that the exam is $200 and pain meds would be $120 asked for approval. I said yes. We wait some more. They bring us into a room to wait for the vet. She says they notice his ataxia and that something neurological is wrong with him and thinks that maybe that caused the fall, not vice versa. Recommendation was blood tests, x-rays, blood pressure, etc.. and a tech would be back with an estimate. He hands me a piece of paper itemizing it all stating it would be minimum $1000 to $1300 and that they would charge the High immediately before staring . The diff would be refunded before I left if they didn't have to do sedation or medication. Fine. We wait another hour and 20 mins before they call us to return. I told him we were sitting in the car to warm up. He says come now. The doctor wants to talk to you about the test results. We hurry back only to wait another 30 mins!! I am freezing and annoyed and dying to pee. Vet finally brings my cat in the room to say they can't find anything wrong with him and that he has vastly improved since we brought him in. If he continued to have problems he would need to be referred to a neurologist. They did not need to give him pain meds or sedate him. She offered to do a full blood panel for an additional $300 and overnight observation which I cannot imagine how much that is and would have been great if I didn't have to pick him up first thing in the morning so I said no to that and yes to blood work since she says, "the outside lab is going to be picking up soon so you have to decide pretty soon if you want the results sooner" tapping her watch. I thought I was saving time because they already had his blood. Here we go back to vet tech quoting me another $275 but figured since they didn't sedate or medicate that this should still put me around the initial $1,300. Much to my surprise, I owed an additional $171. Conveniently they did not allow me to keep a copy of the original estimate so I cannot prove what I saw or pinpoint which charge did not happen. She did the math for me by reading off everything but something still felt wrong when they don't let you see it. We were tired and just wanted to take my cat home so I did not argue anymore. I later found out they did them separate so it screwed up the Care Credit free financing for the latter portion because they ONLY give 6 months regardless of amount. Yes, the vendor determines this, not Care Credit. My vet office does a year for $1,000. Then tech says they have to keep him a little longer for the second blood draw!! WTF. I would have said no if I had known that! but they lead me to believe this would be just a simple add on for the blood they already took, not more trauma to my cat being poked or another 40 mins of my time. The final inconvenience is that I kept asking for an itemized receipt and they kept telling me that they would give it to me when my services were done. Finally checked out with cat in hand and I specified that I needed it for my insurance for reimbursement. They sent it via email and I should have checked it before I left but it was just a receipt with the final charge. I call to get it sent again along with the medical record. I was shocked to see that the $500 X-rays were of his torso and none of his head or neck... the part he fell on! So... $1,476 and 4 hours later I guess isn't bad for a vet emergency. However, I feel like the service and billing is not transparent when you don't get to see anything and you get shuffled in and out of rooms so often, you don't know which way is up. Maybe its normal ? but my vet allows me to see everything and the billing isn't always changing. First time I had ever been to a pet emergency room so not sure if all this was the norm but I didn't leave feeling confident about the overall service I was provided. I know to ask more questions next time

We brought our 16 year old Chloe in after she had been diagnosed with a blood clot in her right back leg, and we made the heartbreaking decision to have her euthanized to prevent further suffering. We expected compassion, gentleness, and basic empathy during this process. Unfortunately, what we experienced was the complete opposite. The veterinarian, Dr. Wishner who attended to Chloe showed no compassion or sensitivity. His handling of her was rough and lacked the care and dignity that any animal--especially one in her final moments--deserves. It was incredibly upsetting to witness, and it added unnecessary trauma to an already devastating situation. However, I do want to acknowledge that the veterinary technician, Brie, was very kind and caring. Her compassion did not go unnoticed, and we truly appreciated her support during such a difficult time. This experience overall was not just disappointing--it was unacceptable. No pet owner should have to endure such a cold and careless experience when saying goodbye to a cherished member of their family. Because of this experience, I would never recommend this veterinarian to anyone. I hope this complaint is taken seriously so that no other family has to go through what we did. They recommended an internist and we decided on PESCM The PESCM internist recommended telmisartan which we knew was common but could have dangerous downsides. We questioned the dosage on the prescription but internist was confident the prescription slightly below his weight is normal. The PESCM internist said he had mild to moderate kidney disease After five days, we rushed our fur baby to PESCM because the telmisartan caused him to be dizzy and he was stumbling and having a hard time with balance. The doctor at PESCM said his blood pressure was really low at 70. Our fur baby stayed at PESCM two and half days and we called every few hours for updates. They gave him lots of fluids via IV his blood pressure went as high as 178. High blood pressure was something new because he had a 120 BP a few weeks prior. During discharge, we noticed there was poop on his butt as his butt area was dirty. We can't imagine how it got so dirty unless he was left unattended and pooped in the kennel and compounded it by scooting an irritated butt on the hospital's outdoor dirty astroturf. As of today, he continues to scoot his butt and we suspect there is an infection we will address. Being skeptical of the care PESCM provided, a few hours after being discharged we went to our primary vet and his blood pressure was an alarming 210. San Francisco was closer and we rushed to San Francisco Animal Medical Center. They ran an ultrasound that determined our fur baby has fluid in his chest and abdomen. Two months prior, an ultrasound did not show this. This was a brand new development. Did it occur when PESCM had our fur baby with IV fluids for over 24 hours? We're not sure. In addition ,his kidney structure is severely damaged.. The San Francisco Animal Medical Center doctor's prognosis was that we can hope that he has weeks or months to live. We understand PESCM prescribed the minimum amount of telmisartan but that and the trauma during ER at PESCM has contributed to taking away time with our loved one and is speeding up his death. We shared this update with PESCM and they said they were sorry and glad we did a recheck at San Francisco Animal Medical Center. I'd definitely recommend San Francisco Medical Animal Center for your fur babies emergency needs.
