Because I used my own brand new frames for lenses, they seemed less than gracious to adjust them. Took them to the actual store (See Eyewear) and they were adjusted perfectly.They also charged $25 for using my brand new frame. There was no charge 2 years ago. I mentioned I switched out glasses often with about 15 pairs. The associate immediately said she has 45. It's not a competition. My 2nd time here and definitely my last. read more

The nursing and office staff have a BEYOND rude and ignorant manner with patients, I tried for 18 years due to the doctors, but they just keep getting worse, it's sad. A close friend of mine and her family have also had the same experiences for the last 20+ years. Reading some of the reviews on here I see that I am not alone. Reading the responses from whom I assume is an office manager are HILARIOUS. There is NO accountability or apology, continues along with her staff blaming the patient. If it wasn't for the doctors this place would be done. All of the office staff and nursing staff need a retreat on customer and professional service they are delusional to think they have any customer service skills. Stay as far away from here as you can. Called in early August and the earliest appointment available which was on 9/11. Take time off work for the appointment and when I arrived was told they have to reschedule because they didn't put it in the system correctly (should have been an annual exam for glasses and contacts) and say the earliest available is late October. Trust someone else with your eye care, this place can't get the most simple process correct. Update: Call the line to the Washington Road office to cancel the October appointment and was routed to the Canonsburg office. Person at the Canonsburg office did what they could to help to have it cancelled. When they pull it up, I'm informed the time in the system (10:30 a.m.) is different than the appointment card I was given (1:40 p.m.). Again, avoid this place. read more

Stay far far away from this place. I had a terrible experience with Dr. Roger Zelt years ago but I kept coming back to see Dr. Karlee Bowers, she is excellent. However, at my most recent appointment I was required to see the new Dr. Jill Schuerman. She seemed so disinterested and rushed during my exam. She forced me into a very expensive contact brand that I did not want despite me liking the lenses I came in wearing. I had a feeling my glasses and contacts prescription was not correct but I didn't say anything, since she is the doctor and should know better than me. I now know that I should have trusted my gut. I could not see out of my new glasses at all and the contacts gave me a terrible headache and were out of my price range. I called to let them know I was having problems and the woman on the phone told me that I would need a new exam to fix it! I had already taken time off work for the first appointment and was unable to take even more time off the fix a problem that Dr. Jill created! I chose to go somewhere else that had evening appointments and now my glasses and contacts are correct and I can see. I know Dr. Jill Schuerman is young but she clearly doesn't know what she is doing. Her attitude and poor examining skills make me question her ability to doctor. I really don't know how this place stays in business, my entire appointment seemed like an inconvenience to everyone I interacted with in the office. This is the second time that we had an appointment with Dr. Karlee and she said that they did not have time to do the contact lens part of the exam. The lady at the front desk asked as we checked in, "you're here for a glasses and contacts appointment, right?" but Miss Karlee would not honor it. Reminds me of Seinfeld, "you know how to make an appointment but you don't know how to keep the appointment." I had explained where my son was with contacts when booking months ago, but for some reason because my son did not end up wearing contacts the last time, it has to be a different kind that was not on the books. I happened to be seen by Dr Bowers 2 years ago and felt she was very professional and very nice. She was thorough and explained everything very well. She took her time, and also examined me for both glasses and contacts (I did ask for this in advance of course). She replied to my post visit questions immediately by phone ( I didn't have to wait days), and gave the right advice that worked for me. I've had a positive experience with almost all of the doctors and staff until I had to interact with Dawn. She doesn't return phone calls, never seems to be at her desk and after speaking with another staff member who assured me that Dawn would call me back she finally did but she called with an attitude and acted like she had no idea why she needed to call me. Then she made it seem as if it was a huge inconvenience to schedule an appointment for my daughter. Overall most people there are friendly but stay away from Dawn if you can. read more

I should have read the reviews before ever going to this place. They are absolutely right! The receptionists at this office are absolutely atrocious. The couple of times I've been there for an annual check up I've ignored the rude and indifferent attitudes of the women behind the counter because I like the Doctors and the eyeglasses selection from South Hills Optical who share the space of the business. Today however, when I called to make my annual eye check up appointment, the receptionist felt it was her place to tell me that I shouldn't make that appointment before my medical eye appointment because the Doctor might have me come back for more visits after that one. She even refused to make that appointment for me after I wanted to proceed regardless. Not only was this receptionist, Robin, being difficulty and unaccommodating, but she was also very unprofessional and even started yelling at me through the phone when I asked her if she was being difficult, or if she was simply refusing to make my appointment for me. If you enjoy rude, unprofessional behavior from receptionists, who also think that their clerical certification qualifies them to make decisions on your, or the doctor's behalf, then this is the place to be. Thank you I appreciate your response to this incident today, but I have already found a new office who has a pleasant receptionist and I have an appointment in the near future. Also, no I do not have any medical issues with my eyes, that appointment was suggested at my last appointment for her to take a closer look to ensure. That is why I knew I wanted my annual appointment without having to wait until after the other and all of that is not something I should have to explain to a receptionist, she is not a doctor or a nurse. Two bad experiences is enough. I called them first a year ago just to schedule an annual check-up. The lady on the phone was the rudest I had ever experienced, and simply blew me off; saying essentially that they won't take my insurance (EyeMed. Really? They don't take Eye Med?!) Then, I called last week with an emergency: swollen, bloody eye, feeling like a foreign object is stuck in there. My family physician has recommended them; I wouldn't have called otherwise. The lady on the phone (not sure if the same or a different one from the year prior) rudely blew me off again, saying they do not accept new patients without referrals and that I should just go to ER (this was Monday morning, around 8:30-9:00 am). Dr. strong is great. She has been my ophthalmologist for many years. When my father-in-law needed to have cataract surgery, I recommended Dr. Strong. She was so good with him. She is very patient (especially with that age group). Medicine was clearly marked and easy to understand the dosage. She is extremely professional. read more

Upfront I need to say that I met Dr. Zelt in a social setting when I moved to Pittsburgh in 1984. When it was time for an eye exam shortly afterwards, I went to him for the exam and was happy with his professionalism and obvious skill. I've been going to him for exams every since. I'm surprised at the negative reviews of the office staff, since I've never experienced that in my contacts with them. I've had a couple (minor, fortunately) eye emergencies and have been helped by them to get in quickly for treatment. Dr. Zelt handled both cases in a calming and capable manner. Recently, when I needed cataract surgery on my left eye, I was glad that he would be doing the operation. My eye is now 20/20 and doing well! read more

I have a great experience once I'm through making an appointment and getting through reception. Dr. Dickey is wonderful. But I have to echo what the others have said below. Whoever answers the phone is condescending, rude, and I often have to press to make an appointment. Once I was told there was nothing available for several months but when I asked her to check again there was "magically" another spot a week away. Dr. Dickey and the assistant staff keep me coming back but the reception has several times made me wonder why. read more

We wanted to see a specific doctor here recommended by a friend, but were told because we did not have an eye disease that we had to see Karlee Bowers, the optometrist. She was a complete nightmare. She saw 2 of my teenage children and couldn't have been more rude to them or to me. Our questions were a horrible inconvenience for her. Clearly this princess doesn't realize she's in the service industry. When we complained to the office manager, we were told we were not the first to voice our dissatisfaction with Karlee Bowers... I was told my appointment time was at 2:30 on a phone call because I could not see out of my glasses as well as I should. I go there on the day of my appointment and they said it was at 12:40. There was no confirmation call or text like most UPMC places do. Then, as I am waiting for my apportionment in the lobby, I said to the rude receptionist that I am putting money in the meter. I don't want to be late. She turns and looks at her co-worker, and said, "she just said that?!" I said, "oh, now you are talking about me?" She said, "i didn't say anything" and then I left. My wife experienced the exact same issue as the other posters. Rude and unhelpful front desk. UPMC Employee eye coverage recently switched the national network that it provides coverage through, so many people who think they don't take the insurance UPMC employees have do actually take it as of 1/1/2017. However, rather than schedule an appointment and sort out the insurance issues there, the front desk clerk said they wouldn't even schedule my wife unless she agreed to pay the full exam fee at the time of service. Wife called on 1/3/2017. Ended up going to America's Best instead. read more

Terrible customer service. I was placed on hold 3 times for extended periods of time while just trying to make an appointment. The person taking the call would put me on hold every time I asked a simple question about the appointment. On the third time, I was disconnected and had to call back. After answering the call, they put me right back on hold again. When I finally was in the process of making the appointment the receptionist got angry when I complained about being placed on hold and asked if i really still wanted the appointment. I asked to speak with the office manager. The manager seemed irritated I asked for her and just said the person was new. I told her I understood the person was new, but that doesn't excuse her being rude. The line was silent, no response or apology. She then just asked if I still wanted to keep my appointment. I made the appointment, which the earliest one was 2 months later. A few weeks afterward, I decided to go to a place I was more comfortable with and called to cancel. I waited on hold for 17 minutes. When the receptionist took my cancellation and asked if I wanted to reschedule. I said no and that I would not be using their office in the future. She said OK with no ounce of concern why. I can not trust my eyes to an office with such poor service or lack of concern for the customers. read more

I had my eyes examined here, and new glasses made, while visiting Pittsburgh. I have double vision which prevents me from driving. The very expensive frames I purchased began to fall apart within the year. When I asked to see the doctor again to determine what is wrong with my prescription I was told I would have to wait six months for an appointment. read more

This has been the only group of eye doctors I've ever seen. Staff has always been friendly and accommodating to me. Recently seen Dr Dickey for a foreign body in my eye. He removed it and I was on my way home. I have read some of the older reviews and wanted to say I haven't experienced anything but friendly and experienced doctors who care about your situation and act quickly to help and resolve your problem. I seem to get things in my eyes often due to my occupation and are great full that each time it happens I am seen the same day as I call. Wouldn't go anywhere else but to them. The staff in thi office is rude and uncaring. They act like they're doing you a favor to make an appointment. While there, you are rushed from station to station as they peform their duties (check eyeglass prescription, usher you into examination room, out to waiting for eyes to dilate, etc.) with military precision. When I call, I'm immediately put on hold. I had a good experience with the doctor, but when I tried to take my prescription and order glasses elsewhere, I was told that I needed a PD # (Pupil Distance). This was not on my prescription. When I called to get it, after a lengthy hold, I was told that they don't take the measurement that the eye glass people do. They have al large selection of glasses in their office and tried to claim no association. After researching, I learned that this is just another run around to try and force people to buy the glasses there. If that is their policy, they should tell new patients up front. That will be my last visit. read more
