Been here twice in the last month. We have eaten at the bar which is a great experience with the great bar staff they have. Great selection of craft beers and bourbon. I had some of the best lamb chops I have ever eaten. Shrimp and grits are very good. Great appetizers, last time in we had the butternut squash fries with an aioli that knocked this dish out of the park. Good prices on bottles of wine. One of our downtown Athens favorites. read more

My last visit to south was by far, the worst dining experience I have had in Athens. After ordering, we were unable to get ahold of our waitress till our food came. We were not given any silverware or straws for our drinks, and we were not given water like the rest of the tables. It was almost impossible for us to order alcoholic beverages because our waitress did not stop to check on us at all. When we finally got the attention of another waiter, he refused to put our drink orders in and asked us to wait for our waiter. It felt like we were ignored throughout our meal until we were given our checks. On top of that, our server was rude and rolled her eyes at us when we called her to collect our payment after waiting for her as she sat at the bar chit chatting. Overall, this was a horrible service experience, coupled with mediocre food and incredible overpriced drinks. Very disappointed in my once favorite restaurant. read more

Reserved a table for four at South Kitchen + Bar for a Birthday get together. Arrived to the restaurant and was told we never had a reservation confirmed under our name. Place was pretty busy, but were still able to seat us right away outside. I haven't been to South Kitchen in maybe 5 years and was reminded why. Food for the most part was mediocre. Mostly this place was good. We sat at the bar and the bartender was fast and attentive. The only downside was that their beer selection seemed extensive but there were a lot of the same kinds of beers (IPAs, porters, etc). I tend to like wheat beers (saisons, goldens, hefeweizens, wits) and they didn't have a single one of those on their draft list, unfortunately. The tater tots were by far the best part of the meal. They were some of the best ones I've ever had. I got the burger with mac n cheese and my partner got the fried chicken. The fried chicken was absolutely amazing. The burger was good but the mac n cheese was fine, good but nothing special. The portion sizes were huge though. I would definitely recommend sharing if you get an appetizer or are planning on getting a dessert. read more

Gorgeous atmosphere in a historic building. Our first restaurant experience of many in Athens and it made a great first impression for us!

First time and to be fair it was just opening for the day. Definitely gave off a roaring 20's s type of feel with a mixture of Art Deco and stained glass and beautiful marble walls , the original granite bar seemed like a tear out from a Chicago style martini bar... awesome... atmosphere was definitely there and that was lunch.. can't really comment on service as again, it looked like they were just getting going for the day... while we just stopped in for a small plate and a glass of wine, it worked... had the fired green tomatoes (south is in the name) and they were excellent. The pour in the single glasses was a little weak so definitely opt for the bottle of you know your party will have 4 glasses... I would definitely comeback for a large meal... more to come read more

And the mash potatoes veggies and sauce work together perfectly. 3. The Salads are fresh. The house salad dressing is very nice as well as the other salads are very well made. 4. White cheddar pimento cheese is addictive. I'll buy a crate full if you guys give me a good deal. Not conventional of pimento cheese and it's the appetizer I fell in love with. 5. My favorite restaurant in town! This restaurant resides in a historic building that gives it a charming ambience, from the vaulted ceilings to the marble floors. The menu is sophisticated, yet approachable (and, might I add, relatively affordable for the caliber of experience you receive). I've loved every item I've tried here, from the shrimp & grits to the goat cheese fritters. I also loved their upscale twist on a tater-tot appetizer--fried in duck fat and served in a sizzling cast-iron skillet with several unique & delicious dipping sauces. Every time I come here, the service is professional and friendly. I've dined here for lunch and dinner, but brunch is next! I'd definitely recommend South Bar & Kitchen if you're looking for a dress-up date night occasion, or a more upscale bite to eat when you have family in town. read more

We went for brunch, and it was good/okay but nothing special. We had an omelet with pimento cheese and green onions, and it was good. It comes with bacon normally, but we don't eat meat. The tofu skillet was fine, but we would probably try something different next time. The main disappointment was with the cheese grits. They were extremely salty and not creamy. My husband and I took our nephew to South Kitchen for his 30th birthday and it was a great experience. We came for an early dinner without a reservation and were given the table we asked for. The restaurant is located in a beautifully restored old building with chandelier lighting. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. I had the braised brussels sprouts, sautéed okra and chicken fried tofu, and I savored every bite! This place is greatly overrated. The Georgian Room is nothing special and everything is overpriced for what it is, e.g. definitely NOT farm to table. My husband and I had few choices of restaurants when we arrived in Athens after a storm caused power outages for much of the area, and this venue was the closest to our hotel, so we gave it a try. Long wait for a table without a reservation of course, so we opted for takeout. The hostess was so condescending when we inquired about ordering for takeout. Though it was obvious that my husband was having difficulty (he walks with a cane and has serious balance issues), no one offered him a seat at the bar (or elsewhere; there were several tables that were actually free up to the time we left with our order where he could have sat down.). A simple order of a chicken salad and hummus small plate took over half an hour! While my husband described his food as "acceptable", the hummus small plate was a joke: mostly lavash crackers (stale) and carrot sticks that tasted as if they had just been through the dishwasher. Fortunately the next night of our stay was a much better experience, but never again for South Kitchen. read more

Wow! Recommended by Yelp and my group bus driver. I love the different ways they serve Shrimp and Grits in the South. This was with sausage, six nice sized shrimp great tasting sauce Diable, red bell peppers, Vidalia onions, white cheddar Grits and collard greens. Delicious with a little kick. Great friendly service. Also had amazing Deviled Egg trio with Masala curry, Buffalo blue cheese and pimento bacon. Food was great. The fried green tomatoes with the poached eggs on top was to die for. Only serve hot coffee during brunch which was good but wish they had different styles. Service was great but food did take a bit to come out. My family of 5 spent $115 after tax and tip so it isn't the cheapest place but you do get good amount of food with each plate so that's okay. Husband and I had a terrific meal. Low Country Shrimp was outstanding--perfect blend of flavors between the greens, grits, shrimp, and sausage. He had the pork tenderloin and raved about it. Tots were SO GREAT--we got them as an extra side. Our entrees came out fresh and piping hot, but the tots were almost cold. We said something, just because you could tell how good they were...even more so when hot. They brought us out fresh ones immediately AND took them off our bill, which was not even necessary. One of many local places I tried during my week in town. Priciest and not the best meal. In fact I enjoyed my $10 burger joint burger more than my $33 filet here. When it was served to me the waiter asked if I wanted salt and pepper. I found that odd but after biting in to the mashed potatoes I understood. Was not expecting to have to add salt and pepper since I don't normally but clearly he's seen it happen before. The whole meal was sorta bland which is odd for filet served with blue crab and béarnaise. The asparagus was over cooked. I've been looking forward to trying South for some time now. And I must say, it did not disappoint. My friends and I checked it out as part of our weekly "Wednesday Lunch" tradition. It wasn't crowded, which was nice - for those who remember Capitol Room it is basically the same spacious open layout but cleaner. The lunch menu isn't huge (5 sandwiches, 4 salads, 2 soups) but it's diverse and at an excellent price. You can get half sandwiches or small salads for ~$4 or a full for $7-8. I opted to get a half sandwich and salad, and it was perfect. You can also make any sandwich a combo for $2 which adds chips (garden salsa Sun Chips) a drink (the tea is great, though not as minty as you'd expect). I ordered the BLT hoagie, which has a fried green tomato, bacon, and arugula with Duke's mayo. The half was plenty big, and looked gorgeous. My main issue was the bread was a tad burnt (love toasted bread, but still) and it was kind of dry for my taste. However, the more I ate the less I had issues. It all came together for the last half and was exactly what I wanted. For the soup I chose tomato (they were out of the mushroom, which sounded awesome). It was chunky with a bit of spice and lots of flavor. There was a cheddar crouton on top, which was basically the size you'd expect in a French onion soup. It was perfect. I really enjoyed it. My friend got the Good Ole Boy salad which was full of hard boiled eggs (if that's your thing) and had a delicious bacon ranch dressing. She got the full size and it was plenty big. The staff was friendly, and service was decently fast (when you don't have a lot of people there you just wait for cook time, so can't review how it'd be when packed). I was looking for a lunch place when my boyfriend visited, and I stumbled upon this as I scrolled through yelp. Most of the places that I've tried in Athens were mediocre at best and wasn't really worth my time to go back, so we decided to try South Kitchen and Bar. My, oh my, I am sure glad we did. Luckily it was Sunday so downtown Athens was pretty unpopulated. We went in during happy hour times, right in between lunch hours and dinner hours. We didn't take advantage of the happy hours, but it's also because I'm underaged and driving, but that's besides the point. As we waited for 15 minutes before dinner service started so we could order, I noticed something strange. The happy hour menu not only included drinks but also appetizers and sides. Those appetizers were the same price as the regular menu... how was it supposed to be happy hour if my happiness didn't increase from a lowered price? No clue, but not like it mattered, we ordered things anyways. The Fried Green Tomatoes: The batter was great. It clung onto those tomatoes for dear life and only cracked and broke under the sheer weight of me biting into them. They came with 2 sauces which I forgot what they were, but it was amazing, even good when I started mixing them together to see what would come of it. Duck Fat Tater Tots: You had a choice of another sauce for these, and since we had the other 2 from the green tomatoes, we got the third option which was a blackberry mustard something... but that one ended up being my favorite. The duck fat was clearly inside every little potato grind of those tots. They were so crispy and ducky, the tartness of the blackberry sauce was perfect. Shrimp and Grits: That was highly rated on yelp, so I decided to go for it. Those grits were creamy and buttery. The shrimp was large and plump (like how my belly was after this meal). It was one of the better shrimp and grits I've had, and you should definitely order one up if S&G are your style. Pork Belly: I feel like there was more to the name of this dish, but it was a strip of pork belly that wasn't overly fat, but was still charred with a nice burnt crisp. It was lying atop a big heaping of truffle mac and cheese with a few fried okra's strewn beside it. This was the boyfriend's dish and he loved it. He would have finished it if we hadn't ordered so much food in the beginning. The service was good, though considering there were only about 2-3 other tables, I would hope that it would be. It's one of my favorites in Athens now, and I can finally recommend people something without leading them to something I thought was ok at best. Great happy hour, beer selection, and very respectable service. Try the fried pickles and the fried goat cheese (I see a theme here), especially during HH. Amazing spot! I came here on recommendation and was so pleased. Happy hour is completely worth it. I got the Water Lily cocktail and it was the perfect amount of boozy and light enough to drink. We then got the hummus which I give 10/10. Perfect array of vegetables & pita bread. The blue crab deviled eggs were next & they tasted so delicious. I only would suggest adding another egg to make it 4 instead of 3. Hard to split the last egg. We then got the duck tater tots with the 3 dipping sauces and that was mind blowing good. Our waitress was truly so wonderful. I wish I remembered her name! Was not invasive and always made sure our refreshments were filled to the top. GREAT experience. Soooo I'm not a tater tot fan. They made me a tater tot fan. It is for this simple fact that they have received the elusive 5th star. I truly enjoyed my visit in early May 2018. We sat at the bar -- another excellent decision made that evening. The bartenders were great. They were funny and personable. They made great suggestions. One of the bartenders insisted we try the duck fat tater tots. I informed him that I didn't like tater tots. He told me I would like theirs. I thought, "Game on." Long story short: he was right. The tater tots are delicious. We ended up ordering entrees after the tater tots and a couple of cocktails. All were delicious with fresh, quality ingredients. Great spot with pet friendly outdoor dining. We were in Athens and stopped for brunch. Great menu with some unique items. I got a bacon and sausage omelette and it was very large. Came with a side so I got the flavored tater tots which were tasty. I actually couldn't finish the omelette so my pups enjoyed it. My husband got the French toast. He got two decent size pieces and a nice big cup of fresh fruit. The service was great and they were welcoming of our two big pups. read more

We come to Athens all the time as we have 2 kids in college here, and had heard good things about this place. However, we were seated and waited for more than 10 - 15 minutes before leaving without anyone ever coming to our table. The restaurant was not even close to capacity. read more

Sit at the bar as I was traveling for work and that seems to my comfortable spot when alone.... Bar tender was super busy but was really nice. I had a salad with a side of the amazing tater tots!!!
