We were a little worried when we walked into an empty restaurant but were warmly greeted by staff and shown a table. The students are on summer break so most of the local restaurants are quieter. Service was excellent and friendly but not obtrusive. The vegetarian pizza is the best I've ever had! Plantain crust, pickled onions, avocado, peppers, tomato and a light cheese blend combined for an excellent taste, even cold the next day! The food was pretty good. It wasn't hard to find parking on a Saturday afternoon. The lot is small and you have to pay to park per the kiosk. This restaurant has an upstairs and downstairs with a good amount of seating. The servicer were very friendly. My favorite was the empanadas (beef and chicken). I like the environment of the restaurant; the music and the options of upstairs, downstairs, or outside is nice. The food is always great in taste and presentation. I absolutely love Punta Cana Latin Grill. We come here pretty often and really enjoy the small family atmosphere. From the shrimp mofongo, empanadas, and mojitos, everything is delicious! The service is always great and we get our food pretty fast, even on Fridays. This is gem tucked in a small corner in Athens, but I highly recommended giving this palace a try. Great Latin Cuisine in Athens, Georgia! On a business trip and I consulted the local Yelp community to see what was near my hotel and had some positive offerings. PUNTA CANA was only .3 miles away and had some good reviews. My request for Parcha brought surprise to my friendly server's face but Edwin said why of course we do have Passion Fruit. Homerun, right off the bat. As I looked over the menu I spotted the Churrasco dish which came to my specified temperature, plantains, salad with avocado, red beans and white rice. The meat was flavorful and tender and I enjoyed every bite. My only regret was not being able to finish and having to decide between the flan and the guava empanadas! This eatery is cozy, friendly and has a full bar. If you are in Athens, stop in and enjoy one of the House Margaritas for $3.99! read more

I ate here a while back but am just now getting around to writing a review. I placed a to go order of a chicken, beef & veggie empanada, along with an order of the smoked chicken entree. The empanadas were tasty & had a nice crunch, I really enjoyed the flavor mix they had in the beef one. The smoked chicken was tender and moist, and the sides it came with paired well with the flavor of the chicken & offered some freshness. However, I will say that after being in a hot to go box, the food kind of got steamed & then heating it up again in the microwave made the empanadas a little bit soggier & the chicken a little tougher, but that was my own fault. Definitely the type of place you want to sit down & eat at to ensure freshness & that you eat it when it's cooked perfectly. Overall, the food was delish & I definitely would like to go back to try more dishes & some of the authentic plates they offer. The staff was really nice & placed/gave me my order very quickly. I'm always one of those people that asks what they personally like on the menu & they were happy to give me some suggestions. Great place & worth a stop for sure! read more

This place was better the second time we ate here. We took our niece and her family for an early dinner before a UGA basketball game. As we walked in one of the servers told us about the Dominican pizza. Our table started with drinks and my wife and niece split a small pitcher of house margarita. They both really enjoyed the fresh made margarita. For a table appetizer we ordered the large Bandeja Tradicional platter. Loaded with sausages, cheeses, and plantains. Everyone enjoyed the platter and just the right amount of food for our table. For entrees my niece got the pizza, and the other child got the fish tacos. Both were excellent. The adults got the Bandeja Punta Cana platter for two. It came with smoked ribs, skirt steak with chimichurri, fried tostones, and yuca fries. Everything was delicious. This is great authentic restaurant. I honestly am struggling with writing this review because this restaurant is not everyone's cup of tea. However, if you are into trying new foods in different cultures this is definitely a place for you. I'm a very strict at reviewing but I honestly feel like this please deserves five stars. It's a total hole in the wall, hidden from everyone, nevertheless, this restaurant has almost perfect reviews. Not to mention all the competition that is in Athens! It's just a really good authentic restaurant. I would not go here if you're squeamish, or if you don't like eating meat that much as most of their meals revolve around meat. I decided that this year, I wanted to try one new restaurant a month as a simple way to add a bit of excitement to my life. I heard about Mofongo from FoodTV and a Google search led me to this lovely little gem. We had to wait a bit to be seen, but once we ordered our waitress was very attentive even though she had to literally run up and down the stairs. I had the mofongo with chicaronnes and it was even better than I was expecting. The mofongo was wonderfully flavorfuland the chicaronnes were literally melt in your mouth good. Nice to taste some authentic flavors while in Athens. Our server was very nice and attentive, and also let us know all the recommended or popular dishes. We got the bandeja Punta Cana for 2 which was pretty good. The shrimp was very tasty with so much flavor. The skin on the chicken had a hint of sweetness and tasty with flavor throughout the meat. The tostones were salted perfectly and I enjoyed the thin crispness plus the sauce. The mountain of rice had a hint of cilantro and beans were very good, although I would have liked a little more beans and less rice. Overall good cuisine and chef stopped by to say hi. We tried this new spot the other night and intend on picking some togo food up this evening too. The renovations on the old Suri Thai spot look great. The server was very nice with excellent pronunciation of the dishes...even though she had only worked there 3 days. It's kind of set up with three different dining spaces so you can change up your vibe too (upstairs with bar, downstairs and outside). The most important part = THE FOOD, was great. Good quality at a fair price especially for the area. I had a Chicken Cuban which was more like a latin hoagie with a side of maduros. The maduros were served on a side plate that was a little cutting board (I thought that was a nice touch and good presentation). Both were excellent. I forget the name of what my lady had, but it was like a latin chicken sandwich but instead of bread it was on a slightly fried green plantain. This is great if you're trying to watch your gluten intake! Her side was rice and beans the beans were more like a pinto bean dish you would find in southern cuisine. She enjoyed both as well. Side note, we love to have Bohemia beer with Mexican & Latin food and it seems that most Mexican restaurants in town have stopped carrying it for some reason, so it was a bonus for us to enjoy a Bohemia with a lime during our meal. I hope the community supports this place as it's a nice, friendly, tasty & affordable addition to the Athens restaurant scene. read more

New to Athens, but I had a powerful hankering for some Latin American food, so Yelp brought me here. Great service, great deals on the food, and very chill atmosphere. I had the steak quesadilla with rice and beans as a side. Quesadilla was not stingy on the meat and was a perfect size for lunch, but the surprise star of the meal were the beans. They look modest but had a clean, unique flavor that really hit the spot on a cloudy, winter day. I wish they filled the cup more! Heads up, though - they charge extra for pico de gallo - $3.50 for a small amount. Certainly too much, especially since the quesadilla didn't come with any additional condiments (no sour cream, no guacamole...). I had to ask for the pico. Still, very delicious and the relatively low price of everything else evened out the bill in the end. read more
