This is such an amazing place. I took my old girl there to have her mouth examined because she's having a lot of dental problems. I loved this place from the minute I made this appointment with Katie until the minute my girl and I left. My girl's mouth was damaged as a puppy, she's 10 now. They did an exam and discussed the options with me. I had no idea that there are specialists for animals, just like there are for humans. I was not rushed, Dr Melissa went through all possible scenarios, and went step by step with me through the CT Scan that was run to show me what was going on and what could possibly be done for my girl. Hosp & was told to call South Paws Surgical. Brought her there and she had surgery by Dr. Newton. She is a fabulous doctor and really cares about her patient and their owner. The whole staff there are fantastic and caring. If your pet needs surgery, South Paws is the only place I recommend you to go. They're honest & very good & caring. My fur child tore her Achilles from her heel a few days prior to Thanksgiving. My regular vet referred us to Dr. Bob Hancock of South Paws knowing that this injury would require surgery. This was a very painful injury and Dr. Hancock performed the surgery the day after our initial consultation with him. It's been a long road and my girl's final cast was removed yesterday. So far, so good. Dr. Hancock and his staff have been wonderful. They treated my sweet girl with love and kindness. They were gentle, which put me at ease, as she was very afraid and in so much pain. They were so cheerful and seemed genuinely happy to see us when we came in for checkups and cast changes. They're located on the Causeway service road in Mandeville, so it was a hike for me, but my vet said that if it was his dog, Dr. Hancock is the surgeon he'd choose. My only issues were the charges for cast changes - I thought that all charges were included in the price quote I received prior to the surgery, but they weren't. Each cast change, with the exception of 1 when she wasn't sedated, cost $130. There were several. The surgery itself was pricey, but I completely understand. This was orthopedic surgery. I just wish all costs had been disclosed prior to the procedure. It wouldn't have changed my decision, but I would have been better prepared. Please don't misunderstand though, they took such good care of my girl, and I'm grateful to them for their kindness, their tolerance of my blubbering before and after the surgery, their professionalism, and the way they didn't make me feel badly every time my dog pooped in the middle of their lobby - literally every time we walked in. Adopting a rescue puppy you don't always know what you're getting into. Unfortunately that was the case with one of my dogs who had an angular limb deformity. My local veterinarian recommended to schedule an appointment at South Paws to see what actions we could take to correct her legs. We set a date for corrective surgery for her leg. The staff called me twice a day on the day of surgery and while she was there recovering (and gave me reassurance all the other times I called to check in). My little Jack was referred to South Paw, after he sustained a fracture in a front leg after a vehicle impact. Jack is my special little guy and the only dog I have ever rescued so I felt a responsibility to get him the best care available. Dr Bob and his amazing staff treated me, m y husband and little Jack like family and it made this tough time much easier . I am beyond pleased with his care and also the talent in this office . Jack is only 5 lbs, and the surgery was very technical because of the location of the fracture and his little size. We are now 6 weeks post op. And Jack is doing well beyond our expectations. My dog, Diego sustained a spine injury from slipping down wooden stairs. Dr. Bob explained to me that the cartilage between several of his vertebra actually slipped down and pinched his spinal cord. He had no function below the middle of his back! Dr. Bob took him immediately into surgery, and Diego came home the next day. We had to crate him, carry him to do his business in the yard, and keep him calm and rested for a couple weeks. Diego was a fighter, and began to use both his back legs immediately, even though we had to Keep him from using them Too much until he was completely healed. Plain and simple, we would settle for nothing less than the best for our dog's knee surgery, and the best is what we got at South Paws. The expertise of the physicians here is unparalleled. We brought our dog in for a repair of a patellar luxation. One thing that really struck me was how invested each and every one of the staff is in the animals. (As in, they will call you in the middle of the night to give you updates on your pet invested.) Dr. Hancock was honest with us and explained Louie would actually need both knees repaired. We could wait, but risk returning to the operating room a year or two later. We decided to go forward with both knees and we are so happy that we did. I was so impressed with South Paws and Dr Kopecky. My sweet lab/pit gentle giant had had ACL surgeries years ago, but turned up with a large thyroid mass at 11 years ago - which was super scary. Dr Kopecky was able to successfully remove it - and is a very skilled and knowledgeable surgeon, who took his time to explain everything and was very compassionate, and patient with my concerns. I came home from work one day and one of my dogs had lost the use of get back legs during the day. I rushed her to my vet office they said she had probably ruptured a disc in her back and that time was very important. The longer she was like this the less likely it was she would ever have use of her legs again. They recommended south paws and said it was the best. I rushed her across the lake immediately. My dog needed a invasive and delicate back surgery. They completed the surgery successfully and fully rehabbed her. This place has underwater doggy treadmills regular treadmills and a whole section of the building and staff dedicated to rehab after their surgery. My dog made several visits for the next few weeks and improved greatly. She needs to be delicate on her back and her legs are a little wobbly but she is in no way handicapped. I was watching her RUN around my back yard a few nights ago and I got emotional and realized I haven't yelped about this place yet. We took our Redbone Coonhound, Daisy, to South Paws from Mobile, AL after we rescued her from a County shelter (high kill). She had been sitting in the shelter without any medical care for 8 days prior to her rescue and she was a difficult case, extremely emaciated with a shattered pelvis and very damaged diaphragm. They took excellent care of her, performed two complicated surgeries, and we believe contributed greatly to saving her life. Our Vet referred us to South Paws for our dog, Darla. She couldn't put weight on one of her paws and the vet suspected it was a torn ACL. Dr. Dena , at South Paws, agreed with the diagnosis and Darla's surgery was scheduled for that afternoon. When Dr. Dena started the surgery, she found a mass on the bone and the bone itself had pretty much deteriorated. She immediately called us and told us she suspected cancer. We gave permission for a chest X-ray while she was still sedated to help confirm this diagnosis. After all diagnostics were completed, the cancer was confirmed. We made the hard decision to euthanize. We returned to the clinic and were allowed time with our beloved Darla to say good bye. Dr. Dena sat with us and explained the procedure. When we were ready she helped Darla cross the Rainbow Bridge with us petting her and talking to her as she left. Dr. Dena even kissed Darla's head when it was over. I cannot thank Dr. Dena and the staff at South Paws enough for the care they took of Darla and the compassion they showed us. They helped us through a tough time. read more

From the gals at the front desk to the physical therapy folks in the back, you are made to feel at home and you develop a comfort level very quickly with the entire courteous and professional staff. Our little guy blew an ACL and underwent the lateral suture procedure 3 months ago. While the first couple of weeks post-surgery required patience and our commitment to keep Louis still while scar tissue formed around the sutures in his "knee" or "stifle joint", the follow up care was incredible and the attention paid to Louis gave us confidence that we and he could get through the recovery period. While it may still take a little while longer to reach maximum medical improvement, Louis is almost back to normal and is certainly no longer in any distress. Dr. Bob and the rest of the surgical team are second to none and they truly spare no expense in getting your pet back on his or her 4 feet (paws). We drove across the Causeway 2-3 times a week for two months and got to the point that we and Louis looked forward to the drive because we knew each time we did, Louis got a little better.
